Casual Game Advice?

Hi there experts,
Does anyone have any wise words to share about releasing a casual game created with Director? Getting a Director created game onto BigFishGames.com etc...
I've done many shockwave webgames, but am looking into this area and wanted to avoid any common pitfalls.
Also, does anyone know a workaround to the full 3:4 screen game on a wide-screen monitor distortion issue? (other than creating two separate versions, one with slightly distorted sprites to counter the issue). Many games like Airport Mania don't bother, but Peggle Nights seems to have a work around (not a Director creation though I know) but only when 3d acceleration is set to one which infers it is a 3D x axis scaling trick.
I'm using buddyAPI to test resolution swapping, and realize this is a sensitive area for many users. So many casual games though, including Peggle, change res without asking the user, so is this less of a taboo nowadays?
Any thoughts or advice much appreciated!
Richard

Thanks for the good advice.
I have been keeping a very close eye on Unity (feels like so many others have already swapped) and had my finger hovering over the buy button at one point. However, reading the small print you can't export iPhone games with the PC version which was one of the attractions to making the shift to C# and the whole new way of working. Future changes like coding Unity C# within Visual Studio still seem some way off, and I'm mildly nervous about having the whole thing based on MONO with the patent issues hanging over it. There was a scare with the iPhone games too with many developers having Unity based games temporarily banned from the Apple App store recently.
If you could export iPhone games on the PC version I probably would have changed over, but many of the casual games I plan to make will be 2D, which Director is still OK at. I think Unity would be superb if I was Mac / Maya based, but coming from a PC background using Lightwave3D (which still has export issues with Unity) I have been put off for now.
Cheers, and thanks for taking the time to reply.

  • All email opens to an ad for casual games, cannot read email.

When I use Firefox as my browser and try to view my AOL email, every one, including old and saved mail, opens to an ad for Casual Games and I am unable to read my mail. I can access it through IE, but not Firefox. I also see the same ad whenever I click on any other site, although it does vanish quickly and allows me to open a new window.

    Hi All,
I want to thank you very much for all your detailed replies.
No, I am absolutely not attempting to surveil or do any email forensics.
I simply want to have a backup copy of all our emails in case the server goes down.
Also, I may be abandoning the Mac OS X Server for email hosting and move to a professional hosted solution. I'd like to make sure I have all the emails on one or two encrypted external drives prior to migration or to send to the hosted email provider for migration.
    That said...
Yes, we are using IMAP and thus all email folders are identified by the GUID number in:
    /Library/Server/Mail/Data/
    So the question is:
    1. How can I tell which mailbox corresponds to which GUID?
    2. How can I use the data from the /Library/Server/Mail/Data/ folder? Lets say I want to import the emails into a desktop email client. Can I get this data in .eml or MBOX off my server? (or am I missing the point entirely)?
    Thanks!

  • Game Advice

Hi there, for my final year project at University I am going to create an online multiplayer Java Golf game. It will probably have a top-down viewpoint and the player will have a caddy and the quality of this caddy will depend on the quality of the player. As the player gets further into the game, they can choose better caddies. The caddy gives the player advice on how to play different shots with different caddies giving different advice. I would also like to have the program build up a user profile so that the caddy could advise the player using previous performances.
I am looking at creating a Java program on a webpage that will be using information from a DB. What I would like to ask you is what technologies I should be look at using in relation to Java, DB and the website. I know the answer to this question could be huge, but any help would be great in getting me started.
    Thanks,
    James

  • Aspect ratio for old full screen games, advice sought on buying new monitor

    Hi.
I'm thinking of buying a ThinkVision LT2252p to replace the old monitor my employer threw out because I've found the old one doesn't offer scaling of the aspect ratio meaning that my golden oldie full-screen-only PC games are all stretched out of shape to fit the entire monitor.
With the LT2252p, will a 1280 × 960 desktop (or a 1024 × 768 fullscreen game...) appear on the monitor with black bars at either side or with a black border all around? (I'm hoping that's what is meant by 'Same Aspect Ratio with input signal'.) Either way is good, just so long as a circle looks like a circle and not an oval.
If it's the case that I'm behind the times and the LT2252p is getting a bit long in the tooth, what would be a suitable alternative for a graphics card with VGA and DVI only?
    Thanks very much,
    Dave

I can hear the sound of the game, but am unable to see it or, as far as I know, interact with it
Literally using Xmonad for the first time and I experienced some game issues with fullscreen. Specifically when running CS:GO I had a problem where the resolution was native to my monitor (1920x1080) it was running windowed and I couldn't find a way to resize it unless moving it to a blank workspace (so other windows don't infere with the mouse hook) and your then able to drag the window by xmonad commands:
    mod-button1
Set the window to floating mode and move by dragging
    mod-button2
Raise the window to the top of the stack
    mod-button3
Set the window to floating mode and resize by dragging

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe the linux native games on steam use the concept of '-windowed' by default.

  • Gambling game advice

    Hi guys,
I've just been asked to create an online gambling game in
    Flash.
And to be honest, i don't know where to start and can't find
much (if any) info out there.
Is there a standard proven direction to go in, certain
technologies that work best for this type of project.
Known issues with creating one (i don't expect a prewritten
tutorial but a few strong pointers would be great!)
PC, Flash 8 Pro (or above), Using flash player 9.
    cheers, Rich

you should recognize that you're probably not qualified to
handle this project. and the person that asked you to do this
apparently didn't exercise much diligence in selecting you for this
    project.
having expertise in flash is the least of the requirements
for this project. you need to have expertise in secure online
transactions and you should have experience with previous gaming
    projects.
you have a major problem to secure your game(s) against
cheating. especially because cheating is so easy in multiplayer
    games like poker.

  • How Can I Learn To Develop Flash Games For Under $50.00 USD?

I am completely new to anything Flash. I have never written a
single line of Actionscript. I don't know the difference between
Flash and Flex. I don't know in what forums Flash developers hang
out. I don't even know what kind of coffee they drink, or if they
    drink tea instead.
However, I have developed games and have been thinking about
developing some casual games and have heard rumors that Adobe is
"pushing" causal game development with Actionscript 3 and their
latest releases. So I went to adobe.com expecting to see a link for
something like "learn how to develop games in flash" or some such.
I poked around the developer related pages and didn't find anything
    I thought useful.
What I did find were plenty of stuff for *existing* flash
developers. Links to articles and HowTos for specific topics and
information about products that cost a minimum of several hundred
dollars. I can't learn how to develop games and create a prototype
    with a 30-day trial, and I am not going to buy a $1000 pro-grade
tool when I am an indie developer without a budget or a pre-funded
project that would justify such expenditures.
I have seen some open source stuff, but don't know if it can
do anything more than build some annoying shaking banner ads.
So let me introduce myself as a possible use-case for Adobe
Marketing and the Flash (Game) Developer community.
I am an educated experience software developer who has a day
job doing "enterprise" software stuff. I want to *play* in my free
time (evenings and weekends) with "Flash Stuff" and learn enough to
be able to build a simple game that I can put on my personal
website and have my friends download. I am not a student, so I
can't get student discounts. The money I have goes toward
toys^H^H^H^H tools for my other coding habits^H^H^H^H^H projects. I
am not interested in 30-day trials, as I may go 45-days or more
between the first and second weekends I get to play with this. I
know OOP so I want to start out learning how to do the "advanced"
stuff from day one and not have to start with dragging and dropping
PNGs w/o any coding and then "relearn" how to do it in code so I
can do anything beyond having the image appear and rotate.
I *am* willing to put time into this endeavor, but only after
I have a few things spoon-fed to me by "advocates" who's job is to
get me "hooked" and willing to invest my time to go beyond Hello
World. At the same time I am download and playing with GarageGames,
TGE/TGB, Game Maker, Dark Basic, Blitz Basic, etc. and many
complete development environments that are full-featured and
completely free if I limit myself to releasing only freeware games,
or cost me less than $50 for the "professional" version with all
    the bells and whistles.
I have heard rumors and rumblings about some open source
tools being available and Adobe maybe open sourcing some of their
previously pay-to-play tools, but also understand that Adobe can
probably provide a better "comprehensive" package of tools,
documentation, tutorials, and support, *if I can find the right
    place to ask/start.*
And, most of all, I don't know where to start my search as I
have no personal contacts to bug about stuff like this.
So, where can I find the big red button to push and get
everything I want handed to me on a silver-platter.
[please understand I have written this with some attempt at
self-mocking humor and am not some clueless n00b]
Thank you for taking the time to read my lengthy posting. I
hope to find some helpful replies and start down an interesting
    learning path.

Just saw your post. Better late than never. You may want to
consider GameBrix.com, where you can create Flash based, casual
games using your web browser. No downloads are required. You can
create a game from scratch using a library of images, sounds and
game mechanics. You can also upload your own. The online script
editor will allow you to view and edit the ActionScripts associated
with each game mechanic. In short, a great way to ramp up on game
design and build your own game without investing a lot of $
    upfront.
BTW I am associated with GameBrix so any feedback is
    appreciated.

  • Anti-Cheat protection for games

is it possible to write an anti cheat protection for a multiplayer game?
game type: boards, moving color gems or squares to make three in line
i know there are programs capable of analize the pixel color of each square and auto resolve the game by play itself
is anyway to protect against this?
    examples:
detecting if mouse had been moved by a program?
detecting if keyboard Keys has been sent by a program?
maybe record player screen or manual review?
And i already saw that possible:
?????? has developed numerous anti-cheating devices to monitor game play and  user windows to ensure that artificial intelligence devices and player  collusion cannot interfere with game play and cheats cannot gain an  unfair advantage. ?????? is continually integrating new technologies to enhance the monitoring  of its game environment to make all game play fair and true.
    note: they use Shockwave
so now can i detect such things?
    Thanks

Protecting against bots playing is almost impossible. Quite simply, there is no way to determine if the user input where made by a user or computer from AS3.
You can however do a lot by tracking statistics over game plays. Computers typically show up as impossible good.
This is essentially how poker and casual games for money sites handle the issue.
Typically if you do to well, you will be asked to visit and show how you are doing so well in person.

  • IPhone Dev/Store - Support for in-game points of sale?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm currently putting together a revenue plan for our iPhone application and have run across a question that could really change some of our technical planning, depending on the answer...
*I'm curious if the iPhone Developer Program/iPhone store will allow for in-game sales* - that is, an upsell point within the game itself (say after a trial ends) where the user can opt to upgrade to the full version of the game and make the purchase from within the application itself.
Services like Xbox Live Arcade and a lot of the PC casual games market have used techniques like these with REALLY great results, and it'd be great to see some support from Apple on this front.
I know info's scarce right now due to the NDA, but is there somewhere like a public announcement that I could have missed this?
    Hoping for the best,
    Luca

No one here would have the answer to that. http://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action may be able to help you out or at least get you pointed in the right direction.

  • SoundBlaster 2 ZS questions, advice needed ple

I am a casual gamer and use the computer mainly for Gaming(World of Warcraft) and to listen to my mp3 songs, nothing more. I also have the Logitech Z-2300 THX speakers, which are top quality 2. speakers, cause I never cared about 5. or 6., and I also hate seing too many cables around the room
I have some questions regarding the SoundBlaster 2 ZS, I am using the older drivers by the way and not the latest ones and haven't installed a single application, I am using just the drivers.
) Is it worth removing the older drivers and install the latest ones? If yes:
    a) Should I manually remove them first and then install the lastest ones?
    b) Should I just run the .exe file which will do it automatically?
    c) Won't this update leave any traces in registry/system which I won't be able to remove?
    2) At the download page it said that:
For Audigy 2 and Audigy 4 series only: After updating your driver, download and install Creative MediaSource? DVD-Audio Player DVDA_PCApp_LB_2_00_75.exe
    a) What is this thing and does it apply to the Audigy 2 ZS too, or just the Audigy 2?
    b) Why would I need this, and if it's important why wasn't it included in the Drivers?
    3) Should I install any applications for my Audigy 2 ZS in order to make it perform at it's best, or are the drivers enough to play games and listen to mp3's? Don't forget that I have 2. THX speakers and not 5./6./7. surround speakers.
    4) Does anyone know any specific settings or configurations I can do to the Audigy 2 ZS in order to perform it's best in World of Warcraft?
Thank you very much in advance

The latest Creative drivers will uninstall previous drivers before installing the newer one, so it is done automatically. The update you are refering to, is also applicable to the ZS, because it says Audigy 2/4 series. However, you only need the update if you are using the DVD Audio Player, if not then it is useless. (It is actually a newer version of the DVD Audio Player, compatible with the newer drivers)

  • Laptop overheating and laging when playing games

Product: HP Elitebook 8540w Mobile WorkstationOS: Windows 8.1 (64 bit)DXDiag  Hello! I am having a wierd problem on my laptop. When i am playing games, watching youtube or doing autocad my laptop is overheating. It does not turn off but its really really hot, sometimes i cant place my hand on.  Laptop was like this when i buyed it, maybe its a little more now but thats normal. Also i noticed With AC and battery: Lagging when playing gamesWith AC and witout battery : Just a little lagWithout AC and with battery: Best performance Battery is on high performance and I do know that my laptop is not designed for gaming. But i can run some casual games like Dota or something like thatBut this is just wierd.  I been on other forums and they told me to check my charger. Someone told me to check it. Maybe its using too much or dont provides enogh power for all parts.    I noticed on my charger (which already got hot, i just turned on laptop and came here) Input 100-240v ~1.7A 50-60hz
Output 18.5v 3.5A 65w And on my laptop back it says Input 19Vdc 4.74A  3.5A into 4.74? Is that okay?  Do i need a new charger? And if so which one should i buy? How much does it cost? Or is this because of something else?

I'll make a long story short. Your system is not built for Gaming as since it most likely doesn't have the hardware setup to allow for proper cooling of the system itself when pushed hard. It will handle game play but since it can't dissipate the thermal heat your system will itself take on the heat since it has no where to go.

  • Help an aussie spec a system

    Hallo y'all.
Building a new system in the next week or so, and would like some advice on optimising the value of my build to take advantage of Adobe Premiere Elements 8. The main initial task will be editting some low quality MPEGs of 9hrs/10GB of my grandfather talking about his life and involvement in WWII. It'll mostly be very simple cutting and editting, but I would like to play around with some of the other features without having to twiddle my thumbs too much, and the system is intended to last for at least 3 years.
I'll definitely be getting or re-using:
    - CoolerMaster 690 case
    -  ATI HD 5770 1GB (I'm a casual gamer)
    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    - KB/Mouse/23.6" LCD/Speakers/Printer and other peripherals all fine
and these parts may be useful salvage from the existing PC (but am willing to replace if I get a value for money increase in performance):
    - Samsung 400GB 400LJ
    - Samsung 400GB 403LJ
    - Samsung 640GB 642JJ
    - 2GB Transcend DDR2-800 5-5-5-18
    - Pioneer DVR-118L (PATA, so mainboard will have to have PATA if you want to re-use)
Need all other parts. Don't need Blu-Ray. Have a budget of $AUD1,000 for everything (not including the "definitely be getting or re-using" list) and will be shopping at MSY. Price list here - a bit of an annoying format unfortunately, but they're the best priced around and I'm not far from them. You can, if you like, also select things from NetPlus, PLE and Austin, but you'll note MSY are generally a better price and I have to get the majority of the thing from one place to get the OEM Windows license.
I've been servicing computer for a living for the last 8 years, so no need to worry about help physically building the thing.
I understand the program properly supports quad core (in that it'll actually use all 4 cores and max out the CPU if the task requires it), but I'm having trouble finding official confirmation of that and benchmarks to show the actual performance difference. Does anyone have any convenient benchmarks that show performance differences between things like platforms, DDR2/DDR3 at different bandwidths and number of cores? It'd make the process a whole pile easier as I've mostly been going on generalisations based on other programs being benchmarked like Premiere CS4.
From what I've seen of other benchmarks, the LGA1366 platform doesn't give a value for money performance advantage unless you're into Crossfire/SLI and the AMD offerings like the Phenom II X4 945, 955 & 965 don't compete that well with the Core i7 860. In the above linked CS4 benchmarks, the i7-870 seems to be almost twice as fast as the i5-750, which doesn't make a lot of sense to considering they have the same cache and only 266MHz difference. Anyone know why that is? Presumably some kind of i5/i7 architectural difference, but it does seem bloody wierd. It'd also be nice to know what "editting video" as a task means, but hey.
Higher bandwidth RAM doesn't seem to help, as the latency does go up as well. But since there's only a marginal price difference between DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600 ($20 for 8GB), might as well get the DDR3-1600.
What I think would likely go best:
    - Gigabyte P55-UD3R $149
    - 2 x 4G DDR3 1600 Patriot-Signature/G.Skill-NQ $125ea $250
    - Intel Core i7-860 $340
    - Antec EarthWatts 650W $121
    - Seagate 1.5TB $141
    Total $1001
Obviously I'd be re-using the HDDs and Optical on that build. The PSU is a little overkill since the system likely won't draw more than 200W for most operation and 250W under heavy CPU + GPU load, but again I save only a little by getting a weaker one (of equal or better quality). I went with the 860 because of the aforementioned wierd Tom's Hardware results, but if someone's certain that's, well, wrong, I can drop to the i5 750 and get a second HDD. I'm uncertain the model of the Seagate though, so will call them tomorrow to check that and to make sure it's a good 'un.
Would you suggest something completely different?
    Bonus question:
What is the best HDD configuration re: fastest drive to each task? e.g. Scratch=Fastest, Media=Second, OS/Program=Slowest.
I apologise for the extended and likely unnecessarally long post.

    A historical perspective.
As you rightly mentioned, at the time I wrote the Lynnfield versus Bloomfield article those price differences were right, but in this very volatile market with daily price changes it may no longer be accurate. The CPU prices of 17-920 and 17-860 are about equal, as are their performances. Of course the P55 versus X58 price difference still holds at around the same comparative advantage for the P55. You also mention the PCI-e lane difference, which IMO is the most important difference.
    And now...
the i7-860 is attractive if you are certain you will not need additional PCI-e lanes and/or will want to upgrade to the Gulftown. Otherwise the 17-920 is still the way to go, because you also have the advantage of 12 GB of memory instead of only 8 GB on a P55 with CS5 being 64 bit.

  • MBA (fully upgraded) vs. MBP 15" (+ hi-res, 128 GB SSD)

    Hi All,
I'm trying to decide on my first computer (that I own, anyway.) I'm a junior electrical engineering student, and managed to get by on campus computers and my mom's work laptop (2009 MBP 13".) But it's nice having my own computer for obvious reasons. Here's what I would be doing on whichever MacBook I get:
-Schoolwork, obviously (papers, spreadsheets, some circuit designing/programming, surfing, etc.)
    -Music listening/movie watching
-Some gaming. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I will dual boot and play. On Steam I own The Orange Box, BioShock 1+2, GTA IV, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, and Batman: Arkham Asylum.
-Some Pixelmator, GarageBand, Logic Express, iMovie, etc.
The obvious choice is a MacBook Pro, I know, but I have a few caveats. I love the size/portability of the MacBook Air, and the optimizations that give it great performance for its size. Also, the 256GB blade flash memory is very hard to match for its price. If I get the Air, I'll upgrade the processor, RAM, and storage to the fullest. Still, the C2D seems a bit old and less future proof.
But if I go with a Pro, I'm going to get the base 15" with a hi-res glossy screen and a 128GB SSD. I want an SSD for its durability and speed (although I read somewhere that the blade flash mem is faster than a standard 2.5" SSD.) The 256GB SSD would be ideal, but it's so expensive (from 3rd parties, as well.) Of course I'd get a Quad-core and Thunderbolt, AMD GPU, etc. Again, I'm only a casual gamer, but it's nice playing with a good discrete GPU, etc.
I like the new MBP update, but I just wish the SuperDrive were removed (I don't need it), flash storage became standard (and expanded), and the chassis was made Air-like thin. I see no point in getting the MBP 13", because I may as well get the MBA 13".
Compared to the Air, is the MBP 15" really that much less portable, and really that much more disproportionate in speed for its size, even with an SSD? And how does the Air perform with the games and apps I've mentioned? I just don't want a big heavy relatively slow (but still fast) slab, or an under-equipped under-powered less future-proof luxury item.
Either way, I'm going to wait until summer so I can get Lion pre-installed (as a college student, I'm rich enough to get a Mac, but poor enough to want to save.) I kind of already decided on the MBP 15", but the Air is just soo tempting.
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Michael

I like the MBA 13 inch base model, and I think it is a great computer. However, if you have the money, I totally recommend the MBP 15 inch. It is blazing fast. I think you should get a 64 or 32 GB Flash and an optibay. If you don't use your optical drive a lot, it is a great replacement so you can have the OS on the SSD, and all your main files on the big drive. It works well for a lot of people that I know of. The Air is light, and its screen is great. If your 2009 MBP worked fine for whatever you do, then the Air will be perfect. If you have trouble accomplishing some tasks on that computer, get the 2011 Pro. Good luck, and keep in mind you can return it within two weeks

I have isolated the problem to these components, attempting to turn it on the CPU fan turns on and LEDs on the motherboard all turn on but my monitor receives no input at all, boot screen, no blinking cursor, no nothing. the computer doesn't beep, if it wasn't for the blank screen I wouldn't have a problem. I don't know how to determine which part is the problem as I don't have parts to switch out but I need to figure out something soon If I am going to have to be returning stuff.
I have read other posts on the forums and one of the first things you guys mention as being the problem is the PSU and I have considered upgrading it to AZZA Dynamo 850
    Output     +3.3V@24A, +5V@32A, +12V1@18A, +12V2@18A, +12V3@20A, +12V4@22A,[email protected], [email protected]
I realize it doesn't have the +12v amps that everyone is recommending on a single rail but would this be workable with my set up for a casual gamer on a budget(the PSU is on a special right now with a case for cheap)
    Thanks for helping.

    Hello!
All LEDs are Go? It doesn't sound like a BIOS problem, more of a power/processor thing, but update 1.2 is required.
    All LEDs light up.

Check that all plugs of the wires from the PSU are fully seated in their sockets and that the 4/8 pin power for the CPU is plugged in. Usually labeled JPW1, JPWR1 or something similar.
All wires are plugged in solidly and the PSU is fully seated

Try with less memory; a single stick nearest to the processor.
I tried with both sticks individually, same result. Blank Screen

Corsair VX550W +12V~41A single rail would be a very good one for you especially if you might want to get a halfway decent VGA card later on down the road. I'm assuming you are using onboard graphics since you didn't list a separate card.   http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004
Right, I ordered a HD 4770 seperately and it came a day later, the screen receives no input whether I plug in from the onboard video or the video card.

Get a quality PSU, please. An 850W PSU doesn't cost 60$, have a half hidden amps list, and come with blue LEDs. Better a quality 500W than a lousy 850W. How would you fancy this one?

Like Fredrik said, a cheap junk PSU is still a cheap junk PSU no matter how many watts it claims to have. That's the mistake far too many people make is getting cheap with a PSU which is the heart of a system and when they take a dump it more than likely will take other components with it. I'm sure you've read plenty of that if did much reading of things regarding PSU's on this forum.
Thanks for the PSU suggestions and advice, I'll be a better shopper when it comes to PSUs.
Thanks for the suggestions but nothing worked, I guess I will be contacting newegg and telling them something doesn't work and let them sort it out.
