Cat 6500 booting from bootflash: running Native IOS

I have a couple of questions. I currently have a bunch of 6500's w/Sup1 and sup2's MSFC2's. The devices are set to autoboot. In my config I have the following lines:
boot system flash bootflash:c6sup12-jsv-mz.121-22.E2.bin
boot system flash slot0:c6sup12-jsv-mz.121-22.E2.bin
My questions is, If the switch fails to boot from bootflash: will it then go on and try to boot from slot0:?
What is the best practice for keeping boot system statements in the config?
Should there be a backup statement?
Thanks,

You are correct. It checks the first line and if the image is available, it will boot from there. Otherwise it will move on to next in line. Your config look fine!

  • Boot from VHD generates Error 0xc03a0001

So I created a VHDX which contains an installed windows 7 environment.
Booted my windows 8.1 environment, attached the vhdx and added the VHDX environment to my boot.
    BCDBOOT F:\WINDOWS
    Reboot, choose windows 7 and get this error;
0xc03a0001 -> An unexpected error has occurred.
When I lookup this error, it means "The virtual hard disk is corrupted. The virtual hard disk drive
    footer is missing."
So I re-created the vhdx and the system on it, but it spawns the same error.

i found this article maybe very useful to investigate your issue
    http://reboot.pro/topic/16141-troubleshooting-os-boot-from-vhd/
    VHD BOOT TROUBLESHOOTING
VHD boot problems are rare, when following exactly the Tutorials linked in this Post Signature. Most are caused by a corrupted BCD (Boot Configuration Datastore) or missing boot-critical disk & controller drivers, enabling reading the VHD or hard disk
where its saved. If they occur, follow the troubleshooting steps for natively supported & unsupported OS boot from VHD:
    1) install latest Windows Virtual PC (with 1024Mb+ RAM assigned), attach Win7 VHD to it as IDE disk and try to boot as hard drive. If it doesn't, it may be because of missing or errors in BCD, missing Bootmgr, mismatch of disk Sig, or incorrect partition
offset set in BCD, DetectHAL element is Off or missing, missing disk driver, or volume wasn't marked Active. This may occur, since Win7 & ThinPC may lack BCD sample store in their WindowsBoot folder, resulting in wrong BCD structure when using BCDBoot
command to add BCD to the new VHD. To fix, use suggested repair sequence. However, if you face 0x7B error during boot from VHD, you may need to add missing disk driver(s) entries to VHD's OS Registry, and add the driver installation packages, so that OS can
autoinstall the drivers after boot. Read this and that explanation threads, and use suitable tools, like included with IMG_XP driver utilities and its collection of Registry fixes. Or, once you found missing driver INF packages, attach the VHD, mount its OS
Volume to an empty folder and inject the drivers offline with DISM as per Install Unsupported OS to VHD Tutorial. If the VHD boots after that, proceed to step 2.
    2) copy that Win7 VHD from HD to a bigger fixed contiguous VHD, add boot environment to the bigger VHD disk with EasyBCD or Visual BCD Editor installed on your system HD, add Win7 boot entry to it, attach the big VHD to Win VPC as IDE disk, try to boot Win7
from VHD natively inside VPC. If it doesn't, fix the big VHD's BCD using the below repair sequence. After it does, proceed to step 3, if you want test booting with Grub4DOS & WinVBlock.
    3) add Grub4DOS to the big VHD, fully install WinVBlock to Win7 after booting it natively from VHD or as IDE disk inside VPC, make Win7 VHD contiguous, attach the big VHD to the Win VPC as IDE disk, try to boot Win7 VHD from it via G4D & WinVBlock menu.
If errors, try to find matching versions of Grub4DOS & WinVBlock (older G4D may work well with WinVBlock - Feb. 2011, can take from wimb's IMG_XP folder). If Grub4DOS shows "File not found" error on boot, and the file name is correct in its Menu,
the problem seems to be in mounting the large VHD disk. You must reboot G4D to continue tests or restore original disk mapping. Make sure to test sign WinVBlock 64-bit, and switch On Test Mode in Win7 64-bit, or use F8 at boot. Should boot... but at times
WinVBlock disk may cause OS instability & file access issues after boot.
Boot troubleshooting requires some practice, so easy way to start - native boot VHDs & EasyBCD.
REPAIR BCD STORE WITH VISUAL BCD EDITOR
    - Boot Win7 from your host drive, attach the VHD with related to BCD boot problems, when attached to VPC as hard drive
    - Make sure OS volume on VHD is marked as Primary & Active, and mount it as V: drive
    - Start Visual BCD Editor, open BCD Store from V:BootBCD
    1. If there is no BCD Store on the VHD:
    - Select Repair Boot Record from Menu, select V: , tick Vista/7&Fix MBR --> OK,
    - Select Repair BCD from Menu, BCD Drive V: , Win7 folder V:Windows --> OK
    - Exit Visual BCD Editor, detach the VHD and reboot in VPC to check if the errors were fixed
    2. If there is BCD Store on the VHD:
    - Delete all entries under Loaders section on the Left Pan
    - Click Edit Boot-Menu, delete all Boot Entries from the DisplayOrder list
    - Proceed to Repair Boot Records, then Repair BCD from Menu
    - Reload BCD from the VHD by selecting Open Store again from Menu
    - Add any missing OS Loaders in Loaders section on the Left Pan, and rename their entries as you like
    - Click on each entry on the Left Pan, and inspect its elements on the Right Pan. Make sure they make sense for the hard drive boot, are similar to a reference VHD's BCD that boots OK (GUIDs may differ), and linked to correct BCD Objects GUIDs
    - Click Edit Boot-Menu, and add or edit boot entries list and display order to match Loaders list on the Left Pan
    - Exit Visual BCD Editor, detach the VHD and reboot in VPC to check if the errors were fixed
    REPAIR BCD STORE WITH EASYBCD
You can use EasyBCD instead of Visual BCD Editor to create or repair a BCD store:
    - Install and start EasyBCD
    - Select BCD Store on the VHD, using File Menu and open it
    1. If there is no BCD Store:
    - select BCD Deployment on the Left Pan, click Install MBR, then select partition V: --> Install BCD
    - Click Add New Entry --> Windows Vista/7 --> Drive V: --> Add Entry
    - Exit EasyBCD, detach the VHD and reboot in VPC to check if the errors were fixed
    2. If there is BCD Store:
    - select BCD Backup/Repair on the Left Pan, tick Recreate/Repair Boot Files --> Peform Action, then tick Reset BCD Configuration --> Perform Action
    - Exit EasyBCD, detach the VHD and reboot in VPC to check if the errors were fixed
    - If not, reattach the VHD as V: drive, open Console, run bcdboot v:windows /s v: to recreate BCD manually
    - Detach the VHD and reboot in VPC to check if the errors were fixed
    - If not, boot from the VHD natively from the host's Boot Menu (if its OS supports native boot from VHD), install EasyBCD and try fixing VHD BCD Store and boot sectors with it, then test boot again
    - If it still doesn't boot, and you added all required boot time drivers to OS on the VHD, post the exact boot error and Windows Safe Mode driver load step, when the error occurred, in a new thread asking for help.
sorry for the long copy paste

  • Boot from a clone

I purchased  a Voyager Q dock with USB3,FW800, FW400 ports and successfully cloned my harddrive onto a Sata external drive in the dock.
My intention is to have a backup I can boot from and run diagnostics from Techtool Pro.
Any problem with booting from the Firewire 800 port or is USB3 faster.
I installed Quickboot 1.1 which I have used succesfully for booting from additional harddrives in my Mac G4 (Tiger because I am still using a lot of expensive
    classic applications).

Restart your Mac and hold down the Option key. The screen you get shows an icon for each bootable drive, internal and external.
That screen is drawn by Startup Manager, a program in the Mac's ROM. There is no simpler way [that uses less System Resources] to designate a different Startup Drive.
Any "boot-up Helper" you download needs to load onto a Hard Drive somewhere, and you are now dependent on that Hard Drive working properly. Forgetabout QuickBoot.
    FireWire 800 is the fastest.

  • Jumbo Frame - Enabling on a VLAN of CAT 6500 running IOS

Jumbo frames needs to be enabled on one of the vlan interface on Cisco 6500 IOS Switch.
    =================================================================
•1) Once enabled the mtu 9216 on the required vlan interface do we need to reload the switch to take effect (I believe that in some low end swicthes it needs a reload)
•2) If we enable only one Vlan interface, how about the other vlan interfaces(about 200 are on this switch)? Do we need to specify mtu1500 on other vlan interfaces?
I have read information at the following two links, but I still wish to reconfirm by asking the questions in this forum. Someone who has already implemented this may have gained more experience while implementing it on CAT 6500 IOS Switch.

You do not need to reboot your 6500 after you enable jumbo frames, but it is good idea to do it during an outage window. You only need to reboot smaller switches i.e. 3560, 3750, etc...after enabling jumbo frames. On these switches you can only enable it globally.  Only enable jumbo frames for the vlans you need.  You usually need jumbo frames for vlans connecting to the storage systems.
    Good Luck

  • My Macpro Intel Core Duo-running OS 10.6.8 has been crashing pretty much with everything I try to open.  I find the last resort will be to boot from Snow Leopard system disc. Has anyone experienced  this? I can only run Google Chrome.

In the last few days, it seems that my computer has all of a sudden caught a virus.  I have never had that happened to a computer, but I have surely heard about it.  I can't think of any other reason it is behaving like this.  I know that Macs have been pretty much impervious to viruses, but that was before they were the majority of users.
Anyway, what is happening is, my computer keeps crashing whenever I try to open a program, app, document, folder, file, etc.  I tried to boot from Drive Genius to establish the problem, but Drive Genius crashed too.  I know the last ditch effort (after cleaning and maintenance of disc verification and permissions and repairs, is to reboot from the system disc.
Before I go there I was hoping someone in the community would have a suggestion to help me avoid that ultimate last resort.  The tech support guy at Drive Genius told me that probably would have to be the way to go (as in reboot) and if that doesn't clear it up, it's repair time.
    Thank you for your consideration in advance;
    Lorain R

In the last few days, it seems that my computer has all of a sudden caught a virus.
As others have pointed out, this isn't malware. That should not be your first (or even fifty-first) thought when your Mac starts misbehaving. For more on this topic, see my Mac Malware Guide.
I know the last ditch effort (after cleaning and maintenance of disc verification and permissions and repairs, is to reboot from the system disc.
You mention "cleaning and maintenance." Have you been running utilities claiming to do those things? If so, you may be the victim of an overly-zealous cleaning job, which has removed important files and damaged your system.
If I'm understanding correctly, you're unable to open any applications at all... is that right? Do you have any backups? If you don't have backups, you're in a sticky situation, as it will be difficult to make backups in your current state, but you shouldn't try any kind of repairs without them. (Actually, you shouldn't do anything with your computer without backups, but this is especially important when something is going badly wrong.)
If you have backups, reboot from your Snow Leopard install disc. From there, first, repair the hard drive with Disk Utility. Once that is done, assuming repairs were successful, reinstall the system. You can simply reinstall it on top of your current system, and it will replace any damaged or lost system files with new copies. (You'll also need to update the system via Software Update after reinstalling.)
If you don't have backups, or if Disk Utility can't repair damage, or if the problem continues even after a reinstall, post back with those details.

  • I need to have both Snow leopard and Lion...Mountain lion running on my iMac.  How do I install Lion or Mountain lion on an Ext H D and boot from it?

My software is obsolete (and now dead) in 10.7 so I need to keep Snow leopard alive to run that- but now things like TurboTax are dropping support for 10.6 or lower and I have to have lion or Mountain Lion available.  I actually downloaded Lion onto a thumb drive but never installed it when I found out that it would immedaitely render all my FreeHand files inaccessible (years of work!),  Now that I am forced to have an OS above 10.6 I was hoping I could install whichever--Lion or Mountain Lion onto an external hard drive and figure  out how to boot from that (found  something in archives I think, but I need words of one syllable or less).  This way I could, ideally, boot from either the External hard drive in the higher OS when needed, or from the internal hard drive when I need to use Snow leopard.  There is a long story here, but I think this is the gist.  I wasn not sure if this should be asked here or in either Lion or Mountain Lion (both of which I have, essentially, ignored since I would not be moving up until I could figure out how to access those old files of forms and drawings00but now I have no choice.  I am panicking now that I HAVE to make the move anbd cannot afford to buy another  Mac just to keep two separately running.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  i asked Apple when Lion came out and they said there was no way to partition (even if I KNEW how to do that) the haaard drive and install both on my iMac-- but I "think" this is a bit different and possible???   Thanks  (once/if I figure this out, I need to figure out how to back-up but that is another matter)

You need to move to Windows 7, because Apple is now releasing a new OS X version annually and it's playing havoc with people's hardware and software.
Windows 7 will get support until 2020, that's 8 years of software stability, however you do need to make System Restore disks, boot disk and another on a hard drive to self restore (like TimeMachine is for OS X)
Apple has no plans to change their currrent behavior as all they care about is selling new hardware with a shiny new OS X verison on it.
If you wait to move, what will happen is you'll lose that full 8 years and will have to swtich to a newer Windows sooner
Windows 7 machines are still widely avaialble, despite Windows 8 (a failure) being pushed currently.
Running three OS X operating systems on one machine is quite a chore reserved for only seasoned computer geeks, then it's only going to last X months as the next OS X version will be released, then the next a year after that.
Another method would be to get a virtual machine software (virtualbox is free) and install Windows 7 into that to ease your transitition if you cant' spring for a Windows 7 machine, preferablly a tower that will last a long time.
Here is a method to run Snow Leopard in Parallels, however it's a unapproced hack and not for the comptuer newbie.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
We have no control over Apple's OS X release cycle, nor the third party developers who make their own decisions what to support.
Our only choice as users to stop using both products and seek software/hardware stability.

  • Unable to boot from OSX 10.6 installation DVD to run Disk Repair

    Hello all,
I have something that is puzzling me. My MacBook Pro hasn't been giving me the best experience lately - the system just seems... slow.
So I ran a disk permissions fix and it found some errors which I repaired. Then, I thought it might be wise to run a disk check on the System Disk as well.
So I attempted to boot from the Mac OSX installation DVD - I tried both a "hold the "C" key" method as well as the "Set start-up disk preferences to boot from DVD" method. I even tried two different OSX installation DVD's in case one wasn't working.
Then, I reset PRAM and I reset SMC (or at least followed the procedure as outlined by Apple - it doesn't really seem to give a strong indication of whether the process occurred or not)
I just cannot get the system to boot from DVD. (I even tried TechTools Pro 5).
I even let it "sit" for more than 4 hours in case it was just taking it's time.
Can anyone think of what the deal might be? I'm REALLY wanting to run a System Disk check now!

    Ta-Da! Worked!
You learn something new every day here! I had no idea that I couldn't boot from a standard OSX boot disk and had to use the in-box one.
It does raise the question of which version of Disk Check I will be using - as there has been several upgraded to my OS since I bought this MacBook Pro (it has 10.6.3)
THANKS! I really appreciate the help - now I can check the disk.

  • Corrupt Boot disc - how do I boot from OSX disc to run Repair Disc?

I have just run Verify Disc and it has identified problems which requires me to boot from my OSX disc and run Repair disc.
I think I do this by switching on while holding down C....is that right?
ALSO I can only find my Leopard boot discs and I am currently running Snow Leopard....do I NEED to use the Snow Leopard discs to boot up?
    Thanks in advanced....worried!

Unfortunate that your HD and Time Capsule are playing up at the same time, to say the least.
Hopefully your data will be salvageable, and there are several software options to try, here's a couple:
    free (I think) http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/35373/disk-drill
    and paid for http://download.cnet.com/Data-Rescue/3000-2094_4-211375.html
I've not used either, but the paid for app may look pricey but it seems highly recommended byt those that have used it.
Have you tried re-booting the Time Capsule - still seems hard to believe that's gone down as well. Good luck.

  • How to open Adobe Reader file from another native IOS application?

There is an existing thread, but I want to re-open it because I think this is an important feature that we need badly.  I was wondering if there is any plan to add this feature so we can open PDFs directly into Adobe from the web / other apps.
How to open Adobe Reader file from another native IOS application?
Basically, we just want to use a custom URL scheme to open a specific document in the App.  Currently, this only opens the app but does not load the file.
    APB

Not to hijack the conversation but I can explain why this would be useful for both the above case and another.
What I believe Pavel is talking about is setting up a "URL Scheme" for the Adobe Acrobat iOS application so that you can easily open a PDF specifically in Adobe Acrobat iOS from other native applications and even from web applications opened within Safari. This is particularly useful if your application requires some of the specific features in Adobe Reader iOS to grant them the best experience possible and you want to encourage this.
Another case: If you're using Adobe Livecycle's document security modules (that encrypts PDF files so that Adobe Acrobat must "phone home" to decrypt and view the document), these PDF's can only be viewed inside the Adobe Acrobat application and appear as blank in most other PDF readers. Having a URL scheme allows your application utilising this functionality to have a 1 click step to view the PDF rather than the current non-user friendly process:
    - Within Safari, touch the PDF link (appears as blank in the default Safari PDF reader, which in itself is confusing)
      - Touch "Open in..."
      - Touch "Adobe Acrobat"
We have an immediate need for this functionality for the example above. I can resubmit it in a separate post if necessary.
