Centering in Dreamweaver
Okay, now I'm very confused.
Earlier today, I used the following code to center my webpage and it worked beautifully:
body {
width:960px;
margin:0 auto;
Now, I'm attempting to use the same code to center the same webpage and it's not working. Please help. Here is the whole code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

I don't understand what you mean when you say this is NOT what happened. I'm telling you it is. Granted, I do not understand these programs the way that you or the other posters do. I'm a beginner. I learn by doing, and by making many mistakes. But that doesn't change the fact that when I posted code (that you provided to another poster) into my webpage this morning it centered and when I posted the same code into my webpage this evening, it didn't.
OK - I can state categorically that code does not spontaneously degrade. Nor does it change/disappear/reappear over time. Code changes because someone changes it, even though it may be that the someone didn't realize that what they were doing would result in changed code. I can also tell you categorically that this CSS will center any page that does not contain absolutely positioned elements -
body {
width:960px;
margin:0 auto;
Add a single absolutely positioned element to the mix (nevermind the 56 ones that you did), and you have added an element that is not affected by that CSS, and will remain in a specific location within the viewport no matter where the rest of the page locates itself.
So - at the time that you posted this comment:
I used the following code to center my webpage and it worked beautifully:
body {
width:960px;
margin:0 auto;
Your page must not have included a single absolutely positioned element (or if it did, you must not have noticed that it did not center as the browser viewport changed widths). It was only after you added the 56 absolutely positioned elements that you noticed it was not working, nor would it ever work without some additional CSS and HTML changes.
Does that make sense?

Table centered in dreamweaver, not in browser
I have the following code and css. In Dreamweaver, in design view, the table is centered, as expected, but in Safari and Firefox (the only two I've tried), the table is left aligned. I don't understand. Thanks for help
<table align = "center">
<tr><td id="firsttile"></td> <td id="secondtile"></td>
</tr>
<tr><td id="thirdtile"></td> <td id="fourthtile"></td>
</tr> </table>
with css for the 4 tiles are the same, here is for firsttile:
#firsttile {
transition: background 1.0s linear;
background-image: url("adultstrab.jpg");
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-size: 100% auto; /*or your image's width*/
height: auto; /*or your image's height*/
margin: 0;
padding: 0;Bascially what I have is a class .thumbnail and i put want to put 6 jpgs at the bottom of my screen each with the code following the css below. I'd like the jpgs to be centered, no matter what size screen. I can center them with css for a particular screen size, but I'd like a way for them to automatically center no matter what size screen. Any way to do this?
.thumbnail {
position: relative;
bottom:0px;
float: left;
border: 5px solid red;
margin: 1%;
padding: 1%;
width: 4%;
margin-bottom: 2px;
margin-top: 2px;
<div class="thumbnail"><a href="amb.jpg" target="_blank">
<img src="amb.jpg" width="100%" height = "100%"></a><br>
</div>
Then 5 more of the same, with different jpgs. -
Centering site Dreamweaver vs GoLive
Hopefully some GoLive guru that is now using Dreamweaver can
help. Tried to recreate the GoLive 7 site in Dreamweaver and found
learning curve is steep. Tried to convert Go Live file to
Dreamweaver but Dreamweaver will not convert GoLive7 only Go Live 8
files. Catch 22.
My problem is that I had created a site using the Go Live
grid and I can get the background image to center with the
inspector but the text does not align in proper center position
over the background when I center the grid in the inspector. Can I
accomplish this in GoLive.
I have tried all GoLive forums and cannot find a resolve.
The link below shows the default left position of the page
but when I try to center the background and grid copy and enter
link they do not properly line up.
http://www.thefidlergroup.com/index.html
Help would be greatly appreciated.> learning curve is steep.
This is an understatement. If you are a typical GL user, you
will need to
understand that DW is very focused on valid HTML and best
practice methods.
If you do not know or are at least comfortable with HTML and
CSS, your going
will be tough.
As an example, the W3 validator finds a number of instances
of invalid code
on your page -
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thefidlergroup.com%2Findex.ht ml
Why should this concern you? Layout issues CAN be caused by
invalid markup
alone. If you know that you built the page with valid
methods, then a
layout issue might be immediately highlighted by using the
validator linked
above. Unfortunately, GL was not so focused on valid code,
and as a result
has left these boogers on your page for you to clean up.
To achieve your desire to have this page centered, you will
need to work a
bit on the CSS. Change this -
to this -
body {
color: black;
background: white
url(images/fidlershell_logo_background.jpg) no-repeat
center top;
Then in the HTML, change this -
<table width="1195" border="0" cellspacing="0"
cellpadding="0" cool
gridx="16" gridy="16" height="837" showgridx showgridy
usegridx usegridy>
to this -
<table width="1195" border="0" cellspacing="0"
cellpadding="0"
style="margin:0 auto;">
and see what happens.

Slices and centering in dreamweaver
I have sliced my webpage in photoshop cs3 and followed the
output options. I open the html file in dreamweaver and now want to
center the sliced webpage. I watched a tutorial and it said I
should be able to click and select the entire table and align it to
center in the properties area. The problem I have is there is no
container around all the slices so if I try to highlight the outer
line of the slices it just grabs an individual slice. What have I
done wrong that won't allow me to grab all the slices and center it
as a page?Plz can you give us a link so we can see
Plus how is your image holding together in your web page, in
a table or in
div
But my guess would be to create a div that will contains all
of imges
regardless if they are in tables or in div. Then you can
center the div
with some CSS
here is an example can you could copy

Centering text within a table in Contribute
I'm using Contribute on a PC doing testing for a professor's
website. Per my suggestion, the professor purchased Contribute to
edit his pages. Pages are using a table to format the page.
http://www.iun.edu/~edupjb/teaching/E340/course_description.shtml
Within a table Contribute will not let us center text. Since
a cell is used to put the main content, we cannot center the cell.
If another table is added inside the cell, even if we try to use
cell properties, which we can change to center, the text inside the
table does not center. The align icons can not be selected.
Any ideas?With the design of the pages, the right area is where the
content is located which is in one cell. Centering one or a few
lines within the content area is not working within Contribute. The
whole content area is not wanted to be centered just specified
lines within the td. Centering in DreamWeaver or Microsoft Front
Page are inside a td is possible. Contribute is not letting us
center if trying to do so from within a table.
Thank you for your suggestion. I'll have to try doing it
through css. Since Dreamweaver and Front Page can center within a
table, I don't like having a css definition for something should be
cared for in the program. It would be a class of Center, which the
program should be able to center We have about less than 10 people
using contribute and others mostly using Front Page or Dreamweaver.
I'll keep testing.
Could this be a bug in Contribute? -
CSS justifications are different when I upload my page...
I used to build websites with GoLive CS2 for number of years. With the purchase of a new laptop, I recently switch from CS2 to CS5. (But have been using CS4 at work). As GoLive is no longer existing, I just switch to Dreamweaver. I had several problems modifying pages originally created in GoLive and now imported in Dreamweaver, specially for modifying text already in place. It seems well suggested to learn CSS, maybe this will solve the problems.
Have been watching a few tutorials this morning on how to use CSS and I've spent a few hours building CCS for all the different options required by my document. Everything looked fined until I upload the page on the net. When text is centered in Dreamweaver once uploaded, everything is left-justifed. What am I doing wrong?

TEST PAGE – WITH CSS
http://www.soulrebels.org/mighty_diamonds_NEW3.htmIt's evident from your code that you haven't learned how to use CSS efficiently yet. And you don't yet understand how CSS works with HTML.
To further complicate things, your HTML code is riddled with inline styles that are overriding your embedded CSS rules. Best advice is to find a pre-built CSS Layout and rebuild your site without all the nasty GoLive code.

Dreamweaver CS4 help centering please
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to center my website using Dreamweaver. When I preview my site in Dreamweaver it looks good and centered. When I upload the site to Godaddy my site left justifies. Can anyone please help me. I'm a novice and I'm trying to create a page for a small business. Here is the coding for the site. I've tried several help tips online and nothing seems to work. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks for your time! Also, I think it has something to do with the CSS part. I'm also using a CSS style sheet.

I need help Centering a div box to a background image using dreamweaver cs5.5. Everything shift left when viewing on different size monitors? See what I mean at
www.woodlandhospice.comHave you looked at your page with images disabled?
I urge you to re-think this approach to web design because images of text are not indexed by search engines, screen readers or translators. Given the demographic group your site is targeting, you really need to ensure maximum web accessibility for all users.
Navigation, headings and descriptions all need to be in real text -- not images of text.
Ken is right. Absolute positioning is pure poison for such a simple layout. My advice is to start over with one of the pre-built Starter Pages in DW. Go to File > New > Blank page > HTML. Select a layout from the 3rd column and hit CREATE button.

[Locked] Centering an oversized web page in dreamweaver
for a web programming class
an extra credit challenge is to fix all found issues with some example web pages in dreamweaver
in the first example page the most obvious problem is that the page has oversized dimensions
which are 1680 x 1050
so the main issue that it creates is a problem with the horizontal centering
I'm looking for a coding/ script solution in dreamweaver that will automatically center the page when uploaded to the web
I've attempted several web tutorials and so forth but have yet to come across something that actually works for me
I am aware that this could be due to incorrect placement within the script
so I have decided to include the a basic version of the example script.
I appreciate any solutions that can be given...
Here is the sample script

That's bull! When absent minded folks wander in here by mistake, telling them they are in the wrong forum will suffice.
Nobody here is under any obligation to answer a given question, ever. "Duty" my foot!
Where in the above quote did I say to answer the question. I said point them in the right direction.
Think back to the first time you ever went into a Forum or newsgroup. Back when you was a Greenhorn/newbie. (oh that's right you been on the net so long, you've never been a newbie.) Did you pick a group you thought was correct one. Did someone help you, or did you get your whatever chewed out. Did getting the help make you feel as though people try to help. The th chewing out make you feel like slinking a wayand never returning for support from that software company's Forum/newsgroup.
I ventured acidentally in the Office PC group on the msnews server years ago. and I received mostly geting my what-you may-call-it chewed out. But then I go almost as many suggestions as to what groups I should go to. I chalked up the chewed variety to the PC Macintosh war going on at the time. But appreciated the one that pointed be to right place.
At that point, I decided that if someone gets lost I will try to find out where for them to go, and send them to correct area. -

Centering an image in Dreamweaver
I am new to Dreamweaver CS4 and to CSS, despite several years of designing table-based layouts in Front Page. I've put a lot of time into training to understand the box model and I'm making headway. I have created a basic 2 column layout from scratch (no template) with a header, a left sidebar, a main content region and a footer. And with floats adjusted, it all works just fine.
I'm running into a problem with what I would have thought would be the simplest of tasks. Inside the main content div, I want a centered image followed below by some paragraph copy, which will be controlled by its own CSS rule. I'm probably missing something obvious, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to center this image. In Front Page, you selected the image and clicked a "center" button - simple enough. But short of manually altering the HTML code with <center></center> tags, I don't' see an option to center an image.
I searched here and found a couple of answers that weren't exactly this same situation and/or that I didn't quite understand. If anyone can help me with this task without showing too much impatience with my ignorance - I'd sure appreciate it.A lot has changed in Web Standards since Front Page. FP used old fashioned HTML styles. DW is web standards compliant which requires keeping content (html) separate from styles (CSS).
Use the CSS properties panel to a) create an #ID .class or selector name and b) define it's properties and values.
#ID {property: value}
#header {width: 900px}
.class {property: value}
.center {text-align:center}
selector {property: value}
h1 {font-size: 1em}
Classes are applied to page elements through the HTML properties panel.

Centering a page in Dreamweaver CS6 Fluid grid
Centering a page in Dreamweaver CS6 Fluid grid.
I figured this would be an easy task and have saved it to last. After watching videos, scanning the web and this forum I have found many answers but none of them seem to work in CS6. I currently have an extra 1-2% margin on the left to get the page closer to the middle but this doesn't work well with all screen sizes and its still not in the middle.
Page can be found here
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!It looks like you've nested the rest of content within your #header DIV. And header div's width is 94.4% - this results in everything on the site have a ~5% margin on right.
You may want to fix this first to see if it helps you with the result you intend to get. If not, do post back. -
Centering a flash movie within Dreamweaver cs3 on Y axis
I have published a movie in Flash cs3 which has generated an html document however the Flash movie is not automatically centered I have attempted to centrally align the movie within Dreamweaver cs3 by adding:
<center> after the opening body tag and </center> befor the closing body tag
This method has centered on the X axis but not the Y axis
I would have put in a table or a div tag, but when I open the html doc in Dreamweaver I have no visible repressentation of the Flash movie in the design view as I would have if I had created an html document from scratch and draged the movie onto the page, all I can see is the "get flash" hypertext and some other text. I did actually experiment by creating a div tag and dragged my movie into it but ended up with two movies one sitting on top of the other when I ran it in a browser lol. I'm quite intimdated by code and much prefer to work in the design view (wysiwyg and all that) which is quite restricting.
Any advice for centering on the Y axis would be much apreciated, Thanks in advance, DaveI don't believe there is code to prevent this from happening
on a client computer. The default is enabled my Microsoft, what
should happen is a yellow bar should appear at the top of the
browser which will allow you view the content.
What might work is to use a program called Zinc by a company
call Multidmedia Limited www.multidmedia.com. Search the site for
samples, one of the samples is a Flash Browser this will run Flash
a browser that you can use. You will need to change the URL a bit
in the Flash code but it's very clear on how to do this.
What this will do is run your web site in a Flash browser I
did a quick test and I did not get any errors. The program will
create an EXE file. I also believe they have a MAC version if you
need one. With a simple "Autorun" call on the CD-ROM you could have
this up and running in not time.
Just be careful of how you call the pages. Since the web site
is not running from a Web server you need to make sure that your
links are local and not Site Root. The best way to test is to
disconnect your computer from your internet and see how it runs.
You want the CD to be self-contained and not have to get content
from the web (your end user may be on a laptop and not connected).
Good Luck -
Centering flash movie top and bottom in dreamweaver?
Hi all, I'm a novice user of dreamweaver.
I've placed a flash movie in dreamweaver and centered it left
and right but how can I center it top and bottom so it
floats?Not too sure what you mean exactly by "so it floats." But
I'll hazard a
guess that you want your video to appear inside a
semi-transparent lightbox
that appears to float over the page content beneath it. If
so, have a look
at FloatBox.

Dreamweaver 8 - Issues centering web page
I recently started my own business and am on a budget so decided to design the web page myselt with Photoshop and Dreamweaver 8. It went well except for the fact that my page won't center itself on screens, and b/c I created it on a display that is 1920x1080 I don't have good results on smaller screens. I used layers, and can't convert to tables b/c of the overlapping layers I have. I treid recreating the whole page again and not using overlapping layers, but once I converted to tables and viewed in browser I found that my buttons were moved all around. I'm really having a difficult time with this and have spend the last two days trying various fixes with no luck...Any help would be apprecitated - the site is up and here is the link www.digitalrootsstudio.com

below is a simple example of absolute layers inside a relatively positioned container <div>. Note how the absolutely positioned layers move when you re-size the browser viewport window.
I stress using absolutely positioned layers is NOT a good solution to be using but it may be the only solution if you know little about website construction.
