Change JDBC driver used by OC4J

Hi all,
I did some testing of the different Oracle JDBC driver classes -- including "classes12.zip", "ojdbc14.jar" and "classes12dms.jar" -- in a plain old java class (nothing to do with OC4J). It seems to me that the "classes12.zip" file gives the best performance, so I was wondering if it is a good idea to make OC4J use this driver (instead of the "classes12dms.jar" file). If this is a good idea, then how can I make OC4J use the "classes12.zip" file (instead of the "classes12dms.jar" file) ?
For your information, I am using OC4J stand-alone 10.0.3 on SUN [sparc] solaris 9 with Oracle 9i (9.2.0.4) database and java version 1.4.2_02.
Thanks (in advance),
Avi.

OK, here's the scoop.
In the releases of the product to date (including the current developer preview) we've hardcode the JDBC class library (classes12dms.jar) into the Class-Path setting in the Manifest.mf file of the oc4j.jar file. This basically makes the one JDBC library load at the container level and is therefore used by all applications running on the product. This is done since some of the classes which are loaded by OC4j at the container level have a dependency on classes in the JDBC library, so they need to be available.
The only way to change this is to :
a) overwrite the classes12dms.jar with the the JDBC library you want to use -- ie rename the one you want to classes12dms.jar and put it in the directory where classes12dms.jar currently resides.
b) open up the Manifest.mf in the oc4j.jar file and alter the Class-Path so it points to JDBC lib you want to use.
I can't comment authoritavely on the supportability of either of these two tasks, but I suspsect that doing either of these would put you into an unsupported mode.
But that doesn't concern you since you're running with a developer preview anyway ;-).
The good news is that with the production release (or even another developer preview update) we'll have in place our new shared libary model. This will enable us to separate in a very clean way what is a system library and what are application libraries. We'll be able to setup and configure libraries that are available to applications which will not conflict with any libraries that are loaded at the container level. The new libs will be able to be shared by all or any subset of deployed applications if needed. It's quite an elegant and very powerful feature.
So hack around today, but look forward to our next update of the 10.0.3 (which has recently be re-versioned to 10.1.3 for consistency across Oracle) release.
cheers

Hi Batra,
Thanks for quick reply.
I already followed the second link given by you and My jdbc driver installed properly first time but the jdbc adapter was not showing in communication channel. Only RFC and SOAP are showing there. In second link com.sap.aii.adapter.lib showing under SAP-XI3RDParty under software Component column but in my system it's not showing there .Software Component column coming blank in my case. So I add additional property Software Component in provider.xml whose value was sa.com/SAP-XI3RDPARTY and deployed it again using JSPM. Now jar deployed in folder sap.com~SAP-XI3RDPARTY~com.dap.adapter.lib/lib rather than com.dap.adapter.lib/lib. So I removed property Software Component and tried to deploy again but now showing the problem

• How to know which type of jdbc driver used in my application

How to know which type of jdbc driver used in my application.

My approach will be....
Type1: you have to have ODBC s/w install on your machine...even the connection string starts with jdbc:odbc....so it can be identifed easily
Type2: you have to install client s/w in your machine...if you are using oracle oci driver ...you need to install oracle client s/w
Type3: you use servername / port to connnect to middleware
Type4: you do not need any client s/w
So, If your application works without any client s/w on your machine....you might be using Type4/Type3 driver.....otherwise Type2

• Beginner Has Problem With Loading JDBC Driver Using MySQL

Hi, I am having problem with loading JDBC driver, and need your diagnotic help.
1. I have installed MySQL (C:\mysql), created a databse (soup), and created a littel table (VIDEOS). I am able to see the table in the console:
sql> select * from videos
2. I have downloaded the latest version of Connector/J (mysql-connector-java-3.1.0-alpha.zip), and unzip the zip file into my C:\ directory.
3. I copied the mysql-connector-java-3.1.0-alpha-bin.jar to the C:\j2sdk1.4.1_02\jre\lib\ext folder and it is in my CLASSPATH
4. MySQL server is running
C:\> C:\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt --standalone
5. open another DOS window and use the database
mysql>USE SOUP
6. succesfully compiled a Java program (javac Test.java):
import java.sql.* ;
public class Test
public static void main( String[] args )
try
Class.forName("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver").newInstance();
try
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/soup" );
try
Statement statement = con.createStatement();
ResultSet rs = statement.executeQuery("SELECT TITLE FROM VIDEOS");
while ( rs.next() )
System.out.println( rs.getString( "TITLE" ) );
rs.close();
statement.close();
catch ( SQLException e )
System.out.println( "JDBC error: " + e );
finally
con.close();
catch( SQLException e )
System.out.println( "could not get JDBC connection: " + e );
catch( Exception e )
System.out.println( "could not load JDBC driver: " + e );
7. when I run the Java program (java Test), I got
the message:
could not load JDBC driver: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver
What am I missing?

Hi,
I missed to specify test in my last post.
Try running your program by explicitly setting the classspath when
running your program . java -classpath c:\mysql-connector-java-3.1.0-alpha-bin.jar test
Make sure your jar file contains org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver class

• Is it supported to use Microsoft JDBC driver use in Java 7 (and 8) multithreaded applications?

Hello everone
is it supported to use Microsoft JDBC driver (the latest version) with Java 7 multithreaded application?
I am planning to use standard Java 7 threads library and use separate JDBC objects per each thread, i.e. Java threads will not share any JDBC objects among them, only the thread-safe Java collections/data structures will be shared between threads (such as
ConcurrentHashMap etc). The JDBC connections, resultsets, statements, etc will be created and dedicated per each individual thread.
If it is supported - do you expect this design to scale-up well or am I better off using multiple but single-threaded Java/JBDC programs to access SQL Server 2012/2014 from Microsoft JDBC driver?
Thanks

>is it supported to use Microsoft JDBC driver (the latest version) with Java 7 multithreaded application?
Yes, so long as:
> Java threads will not share any JDBC objects among them,
>do you expect this design to scale-up well or am I better off using multiple but single-threaded Java/JBDC programs >to access SQL Server 2012/2014 from Microsoft JDBC driver?
Using threads should scale better than using processes (at least on Windows), as there is quite a bit of overhead with a process. Each process has it's own JRE, it's own GC heap, its own threads...
The bigger question, though, is how this scales on the SQL Server. Your throughput may be limited by resources on your database server, and the thread's workloads may not be able to run concurrently because of locking.

• Can I force JDBC Driver use UTF-8 Charset to encode?

The similiar way is in MySQL, like
jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test?useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8
Thanks,

You must describe your requirements in more details. There is generally nothing special in reading/writing into a database that has UTF-8 (AL32UTF8) as its database character set. Data is read into/written from String variables, which are encoded in UTF-16 by Java design. JDBC transparently converts between UTF-16 and UTF-8.
If you want to output a string into a file in UTF-8 encoding, it is no longer an Oracle problem but a normal Java programming issue. You need to create an appropriate OutputStreamWriter for your FileOutputStream.
new OutputStreamWriter( new FileOutputStream(file), "UTF-8" );

• Use of oracle.jdbc.driver now deprecated.

Hi all,
Just thought of sharing this note with us.,(if its new ..)
http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle9i/doc_library/901_doc/java.901/a90211/overvw.htm#1008871
Extract ...,
Beginning in Oracle9i, the Oracle extensions to JDBC are captured in the package oracle.jdbc. This package contains classes and interfaces that specify the
Oracle extensions in a manner similar to the way the classes and interfaces in java.sql specify the public JDBC API.
Your code should use the package oracle.jdbc instead of the package oracle.jdbc.driver used in earlier versions of Oracle. Use of the package
oracle.jdbc.driver is now deprecated, but will continue to be supported for backwards compatibility.
All that is required to covert your code is to replace "oracle.jdbc.driver" with "oracle.jdbc" in the source and recompile. This cannot be done piece-wise.
You must convert all classes and interfaces that are referenced by an application. Conversion is not required, but is highly recommended. Future releases of Oracle
may have features that are incompatible with use of the package oracle.jdbc.driver.
The purpose of this change is to enable the Oracle JDBC drivers to have multiple implementations. In all releases up to and including Oracle9i, all of the Oracle
JDBC drivers have used the same top level implementation classes, the classes in the package oracle.jdbc.driver. By converting your code to use
oracle.jdbc, you will be able to take advantage of future enhancements that use different implementation classes. There are no such enhancements in Oracle9i, but
there are plans for such enhancements in the future.
Regards
Elango.

The two main things that would have to change
- driver : com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver
- url: jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://localhost:1433
It may be that this page will help you
http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/learning/jdbc/
You also need to make sure that the files Msbase.jar , Msutil.jar and Mssqlserver.jar are all available in the "classpath"
For a web app, that means these files should be in the WEB-INF/lib directory.
Good luck,

• Oracle JDBC Driver and OC4J 9.0.2.0.0A

Where is the JDBC Driver located in OC4J 9.0.2.0.0A? In
1.0.2.2.1 it was located in j2ee\home\lib (as it should be
IMHO). In OC4J 9.0.2.0.0A there is no file classes12.zip at all
(only classes12dms.jar?)
Any hints would be very welcome.

Oracle JDBC driver is in jdbc\lib directory
jdbc directory is in the sae level as j2ee directory

Embedded OC4J startup time: 29125 ms.

I did what Manu suggested with no success. Alternatively, I registered the driver jar with embedded OC4J preferences > global > libraries. Still does not work. Please, note, that when I run JUnit tests against my BC4J application modules with JDBC URL as connection type, everything works just fine. The problem comes while running the JSF application when the application module is using JDBC DataSource as connection type.

• File-xi-jdbc Driver

Hi All
file-xi-jdbc scenario in jdbc adaptor under d/b connections how do we give parameters like JDBC Driver, Connection, UserName and password .and where do we get them.
pls give a response.
Thanks & Regards

under the JDBC connection tab: the required paramters are filled depending upon the Databse you are using....so depening upon the D/B you also have to deploy the necessary jar files to suppor the driver information you mention in the connection tab.
Example
MaxDB
JDBC Driver Class: com.sap.dbtech.jdbc.DriverSapDB
Connection url : jdbc:sapdb://DBServer/DBName
MSAccess
JDBC Driver Class: jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver
Connection url : jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=//xiserver/xitemp/db/1.mdb
Sqlserver
JDBC-Driver: com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
Connection: jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://10.94.22.99:1433;DatabaseName=COS

• Buying a new JDBC driver

Hi There,
I am a student and currently working on a ASP ->MS ACCESS application. I have converted that application to JSP->MS ACCESS.
Now I am planning to migrate to JSP->Oracle and want to buy a JDBC driver for the same. Can anybody guide me to buying a good/cheap driver?
I have gone through the following list but I want somebody experienced to advice me on this topic.
http://industry.java.sun.com/products/jdbc/drivers
Any help will be useful.
Thanks
Mahesh.

Thanks for the reply!!
Another query about developing applications:
For the JSP->MS ACCESS application that I developed, I used JDBC:ODBC bridge that comes with SDK and Apache Tomcat as the JSP container.
Compared to the implementation in ASP, the JSP version was very very slow (crashed after 30 min of extensive interaction with the database) and after a long thought I attributed this problem to the JDBC:ODBC bridge. This led me to my decision of buying / using a new JDBC driver.
Do you think I am in the right direction? Also is Oracle JDBC driver used commercially?
Regards.

• Creating a JDBC Driver....

Hi there,
Fisrt of all I am new to JDBC. What I want to do is to create a JDBC Driver that is able to load another JDBC Driver. The reason why I want to do this is because I want to log the SQL Statements and their execution return code in any application.
So my idea is to create a kind of "proxy" between the application and the JDBC Driver used by the application. This proxy would receive as a parameter a JDBC driver to be loaded.
IMPORTANT: this has to work with diferent databases and diferent applications.
What i want to ask is:
Does anyone out there can give me hints about how to create a JDBC Driver?
Is there any kind of software that already does this?
Is it possible to put the Driver Manager to log the information i want?
Anyone has a brilliant idea to do this in another way?
thanks

I'd try P6Spy before I went to all that trouble.

Interesting. The following is probably a better link to start with it though. At least it starts out with a summary of what it is.

• To change the JDBC driver for a single OC4J instance

Hello,
I implemeted an app with oracle adf (Jdeveloper 10.1.2 ) and it use Oracle Domain objects.
I have an oas 10g (9.04.1) in windows
and I want to change the default jdbc driver for a single oc4j instance
in metalink i found the following information:
1.- From OTN, download and copy the 10.1.0.x JDBC driver to a directory on the server. E.g OH/newjdbc
2.- Opening EM-Website, navigate to the OC4J instance that should be altered.
3.- Find the "Java-Options" and, add the -Xbootclasspath option to it, pointing to the new JDBC driver.
E.g. -Xbootclasspath/p:$OH/newjdbc/ojdbc14.jar
4.- Restart the OC4J instance
my 'Java-optios' default is
-server -Xrs -Djava.security.policy=C:\oracle\904\j2ee\test_adf\config\java2.policy -Djava.awt.headless=true
my new 'Java optios' now is
-server -Xrs -Djava.security.policy=C:\oracle\904\j2ee\test_adf\config\java2.policy -Djava.awt.headless=true -Xbootclasspath/p = D:\jdev1012\jdbc\lib\classes12.jar
is this correct?
now I cannot deploy my app
Rigoberto

Seems you missed something in step 3. From those steps the driver should be installed under C:\oracle\904\newjdbc and used in classpath, not d:\jdev1012.

• Can't connect using OCI JDBC driver in OC4J 10.1.3.3 standalone

Hi all,
I've recently upgraded my JDev from 10.1.3.2 to 10.1.3.3 and now I'm unable to establish any OCI connections with my local Oracle 10.1.0.4 database. Not even through a connection pool. The strangest thing is that when I test an OCI connection running from JDeveloper it works fine and the JDBC jars and the oci client are exactly the same.
The error is always the same when I execute a test on a connection pool using the OCI driver:
WARNING J2EE DS-00001 Exception occurred testing connection. Exception: java.sql.SQLException: Closed Connection.
If I just change the driver to the THIN one, the same test works. If I take the same URL from the OCI test and use it in a test class and run it inside JDeveloper, it works also.
I've even downloaded the instant client 10.1.0.5 (which happens to be exactly the same version of the JDBC driver that comes with JDev 10.1.3.3) and tried to use it with no success.
THIN connections are working just fine. The problem happens only when I try to connect via OCI and this problem was not happening in version 10.1.3.2.
Any help?

I found the cause of this problem. It turns out that you must be very careful with the environment variable ORACLE_HOME. On Windows, normally, we don't even set this variable because most applications are able to get it from the system's registry.
Well, it happened that I've edited the script start_oc4j.bat and, for organization reasons, I set the ORACLE_HOME variable with my JDeveloper's home directory (which is the same as my OC4J standalone's). By doing that, I kind of confused the OCI client. Once I removed the "set ORACLE_HOME=C:\JDev" line from the script, everything worked just fine again.
So, always remember: avoid setting environment variable ORACLE_HOME when using Windows and, if you must set it, be sure to do it right.
Regards,
Eduardo.

• Setting up embedded OC4J in JDev to use P6Spy jdbc driver to Oracle

I am currently working on an OC4J application using Oracle db, with JDeveloper. I'm having some trouble with the DataSourceUserManager, in that it appears to be emitting faulty SQL, but I don't know exactly what SQL is being emitted. Today, I'm trying to see if I can interject the P6Spy JDBC driver on the database client side so I can see exactly what SQL is being emitted. I've successfully used P6Spy in the past on other projects, so I believe it can work, although I didn't use it with Oracle before.
Unfortunately, I'm having trouble figuring out how to inform JDeveloper of the location of the driver jar. I've added P6Spy as a library to my application, and I've found several XML files in my workspace and in the JDev configuration which contain an "orion-application" element, which contains "library" sub elements, several of which I've added "library" elements to specify the location of the driver jar. Despite that, when the embedded OC4J starts up, I still get this in the messages window:
Error initializing data-source 'jdbc/OracleDS': DriverManagerDataSource driver 'com.p6spy.engine.spy.P6SpyDriver' not found
Note that this occurs while OC4J is trying to initialize my UserManager subclass.
I believe there is also some facility for turning on "tracing" with Oracle, but the person who knows about that isn't here today. It would be good if I could get P6Spy working today, so I can make some progress today (which is looking more unlikely by the second).

You must place the p6spy.jar into <oc4j_home>/j2ee/home/lib directory.
The datasources are initialized before any deployed application is started, and thus the p6spy.jar wont be in the classpath >when the appserver is started (if you put the jar in WEB-INF/lib).That's correct.
Another question -- have anyone managed to get p6spy to work with a ConnectionPoolManager in a BC4J-project?? I get a ClassCastException from oracle.jbo.server.OracleSQLBuilder because it tries to cast a statement into an OracleStatement.You need to build the project using SQL92 and Java Type Map.
