Changing desktop icon placement

I cant seem to figure out how to use the arrange icons function and not have them align on the right side of my desktop.
I move them to the left and use this funtion, and it puts them back to the right.
It seems counter-intuitive to have things align on the right when we read from the left.
Any help?
Thanks
Nat

Hello Nat & Welcome to Discussions.
From your desktop choose View>Show Options or Command+J Then uncheck Snap to grid and uncheck Keep arranged by: This will allow you to put your icons wherever you want and they'll stay there.

  • Registry key to change desktop icon size

    By default Windows 7 has desktop icon view set to Medium. I want to change the default user NTuser.dat hive as part of SCCM build so that each new user has small size by default, but can change if they wish (hence can't do it as a GPO)
    Does anyone know the registry key(s) to change?
    Ian Burnell, London (UK)

    Hi,
    This view size is controlled by HKU specific user registry. Thus it can't be mapping to another user account.
    If you insist, there is a complex workaround(However I wouldn't like to recommend you use this method):
    Copy the following registry value to place another user's registry.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
    Note: It can't be imported, just copy its value.

  • How to change desktop icons?

    Hi guys,
    Just wondering if someone can help me out here? Am trying to change the desktop 'icons' in my 20" imac? (I want to change the icon of the HDD and some folders) Can someone help me out? Cheers

    If you already have a picture that you want to use as an icon, open it in a picture viewing app (Preview, for instance), and copy it. Now click on the icon of the folder or disk that you want to change and press Command-I (or choose "Get Info" from the Finder's File menu). Click on the icon in the top left-hand corner: you can now paste the picture onto it.

  • Change desktop icon image

    Can the graphic used in a desktop icon be changed? Forgive me if this the wrong forum. Are other good general Apple forums available?

    Hi!
    Are you attempting to use the icon from one file to paste to another file? If so, try this:
    Highlight the file with the icon you want to use and key in cmd+i to bring up Get Info. Click on the icon at the top of the Get Info wondow and key in cmd+c to copy it. Highlight the file that you want to paste the icon to, do cmd+i, highlight the icon in the get Info window, then key in cmd+v to paste it to this file. The icon will be the proper size to begin with, since it was a file icon to begin with. (The way shown in the preceding post should also work, but insure that you highlight and copy the graphic icon image first, before trying to paste it into the other file.)
    If you want to use a custom graphic that is not an icon, I found a simple way to convert file preview images to icons using Pic2Icon. I keep it in the Dock and drop a graphics file (or folder's worth of graphic files) on it and it immediately changes the generic icons to icons with the graphics on them. This freeware utility was developed by SugarCube Software, but is no longer available on the web, even though Googling will provide plenty of links. However, they were nice enough not to originally restrict it's redistribution and I have a copy on my iDisk if you want it. The link is posted below and the archived file will immediately begin downloading if you click on it. (I'll leave the link active for a few days or so before disabling it.)

    You can also create such preview icons via Photoshop, if you have it...

    no. not really. once we've finished our application and compile it we get an Executable Jar File in our project's Dist folder right? and it's default icon is the Java™ Coffee Cup. i would like to change the image of that desktop icon ^^; sorry for being too vague btw.
    xnayou can change the icon to be used for all jar files - not for each single one...
    Instructions for Windows XP:
    1) Explorer > Tools > FileTypes
    2) Select JAR (Executable Jar File)
    3) Click "Advanced"
    4) Click "Change Icon"
    5) Select the icon you wish to use
    6) Click "OK"
    7) Click "Close"
    If you want to change for a single application you have create an application launcher. I use [install4j|http://www.ej-technologies.com/products/install4j/overview.html] from ej-technologies.

  • Started To Change Desktop Icons, But Now Want Originals Back

    I started to change my Applications/Pictures/Library/Desktop/Ect. icons to ones that I liked a little better, but now I can't find the rest of the set, and want to revert back to the original icons. Is there a way to do this? I'd rather not have to restore everything to factory settings if that's possible.
    [My Model says MacBook but also have an iMac G5]

    Get the icon you want to change, hit get info, then hit the delete key on the keyboard, it will change back to the original icon.

    To set up the new AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as a bridge, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility, make these settings:
    Internet - Internet Connection tab
    o Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
    o Click Update to apply the new settings.

    Place each of the items in the desired position, and then open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder. Paste in the following:
    tell application "Finder"
    position of item "item name"
    end tell
    Insert the item's name between the second pair of double quotes, press Run, and note down the results. Repeat this process for each item. When you have them all noted down, enter the following:
    tell application "Finder"
    set position of item "1" to {26,91}
    set position of item "2" to {69,72}
    set position of item "3" to {58,60}
    end tell
    with the results you got earlier after the to in each line, and the item's name substituted. Save the second script as an application and place it on your desktop; it will need to be launched by hand.

  • [Solved] wy i can place xfce4 desktop icons in a "grid" only?

    hello archers!
    im in love with xfce4 DE, but the annoying thing is that i can place the desktop icons only in a invisible "grid" of tiles.
    i changed the display manager to gdm, but it didn't help. i tryed changing the WM, but didn't not find out how to do that.
    Yes, i dont understand how DE's working internal, cause there are so many parts, as DM, WM, session-manager, and so on, which confuses me.
    So how i can place my icons individually on the desktop?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Another way to adjust the desktop grid size settings and more.
    Source:  http://git.xfce.org/xfce/xfdesktop/tree/README
    HIDDEN CUSTOMISATIONS
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If you're using the icon view, and would like to change how the text looks,
    you have three things you can change: the opacity (transparency) of the
    rounded text background, the color of the rounded text background, and the
    color of the text itself.
    You'd want to add something like this to your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file:
    style "xfdesktop-icon-view" {
    XfdesktopIconView::label-alpha = 75
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-label-alpha = 100
    XfdesktopIconVIew::ellipsize-icon-labels = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-x-offset = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-y-offset = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-color = "#ff0000"
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-x-offset = 2
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-y-offset = 2
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-color = "#00ff00"
    XfdesktopIconVIew::cell-spacing = 6
    XfdesktopIconView::cell-padding = 6
    XfdesktopIconView::cell-text-width-proportion = 2.5
    base[NORMAL] = "#00ff00"
    base[SELECTED] = "#5050ff"
    base[ACTIVE] = "#0000ff"
    fg[NORMAL] = "#ff0000"
    fg[SELECTED] = "#ff0000"
    fg[ACTIVE] = "#ff0000"
    widget_class "*XfdesktopIconView*" style "xfdesktop-icon-view"
    The first three entries set the opacity of the rounded text background
    (allowed values are from 0 (totally transparent) to 255 (totally opaque),
    and whether or not unselected icons get their labels ellipsized
    (truncated) to fit on one line. (The 'selected-' version controls the
    opacity of icons that have been selected with the mouse.)
    The second six entries can be used to enable a text shadow to be painted
    with the icon labels. The offsets are in pixels. Setting them to 0 (the
    defaults) will disable the shadows entirely. Again, the 'selected-'
    versions apply to icons that have been selected with the mouse.
    The third four entries set spacing and sizing for individual icons on
    the grid. The 'cell-spacing' property specifies the spacing between each
    'cell' in the grid of icons. The 'cell-padding' property sets extra
    padding placed around each icon+text. The units for these two are in
    pixels. The 'cell-text-width-proportion' property specifies the maximum
    width of the text label underneat the icon, as a multiplier of the icon
    width (so for 30px icons, '2.5' would leave a 75px wide area underneath
    for the text).
    The fourth three entries set the color of the rounded text background.
    * NORMAL sets the color for the regular, unselected state.
    * SELECTED sets the color for when the icon is selected, and the desktop has
    keyboard/mouse focus.
    * ACTIVE sets the color for when the icon is selected, but the desktop does
    not have keyboard/mouse focus.
    The final three entries set the color of the label text. See above for the
    differences between NORMAL, SELECTED, and ACTIVE.
  • How do I change application/dock/desktop icons?
    I recently downloaded a set of icons I'd like to replace my current icons on my desktop/dock. However, I'm having some problems. I've searched for the process to switch them I'm aware that you have to go to the Command+i option, copy the icon in the left, then go to what you want to switch and paste it to the icon in the left there. However, I think I might be having a problem changing it to the icon because after I get the info window open, the icon in the left is not the actual icon I'm trying to change it to. It looks like this:
    Instead of changing to the icon/picture I want, it changes to the identification of a .png/.ico image.
    Am I making any sense? And if so, can someone please help?
    Message was edited by: jrockingmoogle
    I don't think I am exactly sure of your problem, but I'll comment anyway. The procedure for changing an icon is, kindof, how you have described it; select the item with the icon you want to use and choose Get Info. Then select the icon in the Get Info window, by clicking on it once (in the upper left). This will cause an outline to appear around it. Then select Copy from the edit menu. Now select the item you want to change and repeat that same procedure, except, select Paste from the Edit pull down menu, in place of Copy, after you have selected the icon in the Get Info window.
    For changing System icons, you'll need something like CandyBar.
  • Restore Desktop Icons after Resolution Change
    I often give talks using a projector. The projector has a lower resolution than my display. This causes my desktop icons to pile up in a jumble. Worse, when I return to the standard resolution after the talk, my desktop is still in a mess!
    I seem to recall earlier versions of Tiger/Leopard could remember the locations of the icons and restore them after switching back to the native resolution.
    Is there a solution for this? Possibly I have a preference set wrong so that the restore does not take place?
    Sorry if this is already answered but I didn't see it come up searching the forums.
    I never tried it, but if you have one Space for your presentations and another for your usual work, will the unseen desktop still get the icons "mangled?" I would think the resolution change would only apply to the Space that you are using. Maybe not.
    Consider this, then - create another user just for the presentations. My rhetoric question would be, would the icons of the original user still get "mangled" if you used the new account for the presentations?
    If neither of these solutions work, then the alternative terminal solution would work. You would simple restore the original .DS_Store file. You could write a simple script to do that.
    I'll follow your ideas shortly, thanks .. and they make a lot of sense.
    BTW: are you a Nero Wolfe fan?
    Yes
    I've got them all, I think, been reading them for over 20 years, and re-read them every couple of years or so.
    I have the entire corpus, the A&E shows, including widescreen double-length European versions and all the OTR shows. Guess that makes me a fanatic
    I also look for the "Pastiches" .. I've got 6 of Goldsborough's but haven't found others.
    Nero Pastiches have not interested me, but I have many of those of Holmes' plus the Sacred Canon, the Brett TV series, almost every movie, the Russian series, OTR, etc.
    Believe it or not, I learned a great deal of computer diagnosis from these stories. Their value greatly transcends their genre. You get to look past the obvious.
