Checking memory usage

Hi,
I am developing a plugin for a java program. I was wondering if it's possible to check the memory usage of the plugin itself and not the entire program + plugin. For a rough estimate I am checking windows task manager and observing java.exe but that is probably not very accurate. Are there better ways to measure memory usage?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that.
The problem with running my plugin in eclipse however is that my plugin works with large datasets. I used a map to store it all in memory. The program normally uses about 60mb(according to windows task manager) but goes up to 200-300mb after the datafiles have been loaded in. I think Eclipse has out of memory issues with such large datasets so I probably won't be able to try it out.

  • Does J2ME Wireless Toolkit Check Memory Usage?

I just want to confirm that does the J2ME wireless Toolkit check the memory usage by a MIDlet and only allow it 128KB of memory usage as specified by the MIDP 2.0 specification???
Or do we have to calculate and check manually about the memory usage of a MIDlet???

    Hi,
The WTK doesnt set heap memory unless u specify in the preferences. Most of the devices allow upto 200 KB heap size or more. The least being Nokia 7250 which allows only upto 200 KB heap size. SO if u are developing for a particular device in mind specify the heap size in the preferences. You will also get the memory utilized at runtime thru.
    Runtime.getRuntime().* functions. eg.
    Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory();
    wil give u free memory.
in new emulators such as Nokia 7210 emulator , u can see the memory real time , on the details secction.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to check memory usage of a debug

I am very new, sorry for any newbishness on my part.
Is there a way to track how much memory your debug is using?  I am trying to make a game, and I have 2 ways of doing something.
One with an array of square objects doing hitTest, and one only 1 object and an array of cords doing a nested if{}.
I want to see what each of these are doing in terms of memory usage during runtime and which one would be better.
    (added)
Specificly not just which one of these is better, but also as different things are applied, I want to test how each of these things responds and which one would slow down a computer less.  And later on as things progress I want a way to test it.

  • Checking Memory Usage via the Activity Monitor

In trying to find out why iPhoto is so slow, it was suggested that I check the activity monitor to see what applications are using the most memory. Here is what I saw (see below). Does anyone know what kernel_task is? It is using up the most memorr and I have no idea what it is. I would have asked this of the very generous person who has been helping me but I could not reply to his last post....thanks for any information.

Uninstall it. You don't need it.
Be sure to uninstall it properly - there will likely be files littered around the various LaunchAgent, LaunchDaemon folders.

  • Tracking Memory usage on iOS using the Stats class

I've been checking memory usage on an app I'm developing for iOS using the Stats class https://github.com/mrdoob/Hi-ReS-Stats ( http://help.adobe.com/en_US/as3/mobile/WS4bebcd66a74275c3-315cd077124319488fd-7fff.html#WS 948100b6829bd5a61637f0a412623fd0543-8000).
I added the Stats class to my project and redeployed and, yikes, memory usage reported in Stats creeps up (pretty slowly) even when there's nothing happening in the app (just showing a loaded bitmap).
To try and track down the issue I created a project with a test class that extends Sprite with just this single call in the constructor :-
    addChild( new Stats() );
I deployed it to the device to check that it didn't gobble any memory.
But I was Suprised to watch the memory usage creep up and up (to approx 5) before some garbage collection kicked in and takes memory back down. I left it running and then it crept up again to over 7.5 this time before being kicked back down to just below 3.
So 2 related questions that I'd appreciate any feedback/observations/thoughts on :-
1 - Is this normal (i.e. memory creeping up when there's nothing other than Stats in the project) ?
2 - What is the best way to monitor memory usage within an app ? Is Stats good enough - is Stats itself causing the memory usage ?
    All the best guys !

    Also see thread (http://forums.adobe.com/message/4280020#4280020)
    My conclusions are :-
    - If you run an app and leave it idle, memory usage gradually creeps up (presumably as memory is being used to perform calcs/refresh the display etc)
    - Periodically the garbage collection kicks in and memory is brought back down
    - This cycle could be in excess of 5 mins
Run with your real app and memory will increase and be released much more rapidly/regularly.
    - It's probably worth performing initial checks by running on your desktop to iron out any initial problems

  • SQL 2012 Memory usage analysis

We have this clustered SQL Server, win 2008 R2 + SQL 2012 Standard SP2,
Server RAM is 64GB, maximum memory is set at 50GB, and minimum memory is set at 10GB.
When I check memory usage, it seems
CLR takes more memory than Buffer Pool, is it normal? Or does it show memory allocation issue? Thanks a lot!
The "total server memory" and "target server memory" performance counters are both 50GB.
Please kindly see below screen shots below:

    Hi Vivian,
I would assume you are asking question related to SQL Server 2012 memory the whole discussion would change if it is SQL Server 2008 r2 memory
You are not drawing correct information from first query.
CLR has Reserved 6 G but ONLY committed 12 MB. And that too you are looking at virtual memory which is 6TB for SQL Server process so of course CLR can reserve there is actually no issue with it. A committed memory is actually what SQL Server is using
reserved in simple language is what SQL Server thinks it might need in near future.
As you said Target and total memory are same its good.
For both 2012 and 2008 r2 below query will give total memory utilization by SQL Server instance
    select
    (physical_memory_in_use_kb/1024)Memory_usedby_Sqlserver_MB,
    (locked_page_allocations_kb/1024 )Locked_pages_used_Sqlserver_MB,
    (total_virtual_address_space_kb/1024 )Total_VAS_in_MB,
    process_physical_memory_low,
    process_virtual_memory_low
    from sys. dm_os_process_memory
If you want to see Breakdown of memory utilized by various clerks in 2008 r2
    select
    type,
    (SUM(single_pages_kb)/1024) Single_page_allocator_memory,
    (SUM(multi_pages_kb)/1024) multi_page_allocator_memory,
    (sum(awe_allocated_kb)/1024) [AWE API memory]
    from sys.dm_os_memory_clerks
    group by type
    order by Single_page_allocator_memory desc
    For 2012
    select type,
    (SUM(pages_kb)/1024) as Memory_Utilized
(sum(awe_allocated_kb)/1024) as Memory Allocated by AWE API
    from
    sys.dm_os_memory_clerks
    group by type
    order by Memory_Utilized desc
Starting from 2012 Max server memory controls much more than buffer pool
Max server memory controls SQL Server memory allocation, including the buffer pool, compile memory, all caches, qe memory grants, lock manager memory, and CLR memory (basically any “clerk” as found in dm_os_memory_clerks). Memory for thread stacks, heaps,
linked server providers other than SQL Server, or any memory allocated by a “non SQL Server” DLL is not controlled by max server memory

  • Memory Usage in FCE 2.0

I am dropping frames capturing video from an HD camera (SONY HDR-HC1), after only 10 seconds or so. I went into System Settings and checked "Memory Usage", and it says I am using 100% of 185MB.
I have 4GB of memory installed, and 3.64GB free at this very moment.
Any idea why FCE has no clue how much memory is really free??

PowerMac Dual 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It is most likely the 10.4.9 update. If you are using FCE 3.0 or earlier and you have 10.4.9, there is a capture problem. There are a few options:
    1. EXPERIMENTAL: Drag your Capture Scratch folder into the Spotlight privacy list.
    2. Archive and install to 10.4.8.
    3. Buy FCE HD 3.5.
Feel free to ask me more questions...

  • High memory usage when many tabs are open (and closed)

When I open Firefox the memory usage is about 70-100 MB RAM. When I'm working with Firefox I often open 15-20 tabs at once, then I close them and open others. Memory usage increaes up to 450 - 500 MB RAM. After closing the tabs the usage usually decreases, but after sometime. It starts decreasing very slow and never comes back to the level from the beginning. After few hours of work Firefox uses about 400 MB RAM even if one tab is open. First I thought it's because of my plugins (Firebug, Speed Dial, Adlock Plus) but I've checked it and it's not. I reinstalled Firefox but the problem occurs as well. I'm not sure if it's normal. Could you help me, please?

  • Memory usage of excel stays high after Macro is executed and excel crashes after trying to close it

    Hi,
I'm trying to resolve an issue with an excel based tool. The macros retrieve data from an Oracle database and do calculations with the data. They also open and write into files in the same directory. The macros all run and finish the calculations. I can
continue to use and modify the sheet. I can also close the workbook, however excel memory usage I see in the windows Task manager stays elevated. If I  close Excel it says: Excel stopped working and then it tries to recover information...
I assume something in the macro did not finish properly and memory was not released. I would like to check what is still open (connection, stream or any other object) when I close the workbook I would like to have a list of all still used memory. Is there

  • Memory usage problem on AIX 7.1

    Hi,
We are running Oracle 11GR2 EE on AIX 7.1 and keep getting alerts on the pgchecks (memory paging).
The alerts are coming from another system monitoring tool (Hobbit), but our sys admins are telling us it is because we are overallocating memory.
In our case, we have an 8G SGA for the only database.
Then, we are running grid and ASM.
How can I check the actual (real) memory usage by individual processes of our Oracle database, our emagent (OMS agent), and for our ASM. In our case, we have 32G of Real Memory installed, and we should not be having a memory paging issue.
For the Oracle database, it is set for 8G.

  • Having a problem with Excessive "modified" memory usage in Win7 x64, upwards of 3.6GB, any suggestions?

I have 6GB of ram, a fresh install of Windows 7 x64, and the screenshot shows what happens after leaving my PC on for a couple days. (3782+MB being used by modified memory ATM).
    http://wow.deconstruct.me/images/ExcessiveMemory.jpg
    Any ideas on this?
    Edit:
Added this after first round of suggestions
    http://wow.deconstruct.me/images/NotSoExcessiveMemory.jpg
This is uptime of around 2 hours.
The first image is of uptime of around 3-5 days.

    Matthew,
The only reason why these pages are kept on the modified list indefinitely is because the system doesn't have any available pagefile space left. If you increase the size of the pagefile the system will write most of these pages to disk and then move them from the modified list to the standby list. Standby pages are considered part of "available memory", because they can be reused for some other purpose if necessary.
Whether this would "fix" the problem or not depends on what the actual problem is. If it's an unbound memory leak then increasing the size of the pagefile will simply allow the system to run longer before it eventually hits the maximum pagefile size limit, or runs out of disk space. On the other hand, if it's a case of some application allocating a lot of memory and not using it for a long time, then increasing the pagefile might be a perfectly valid solution.
Allowing the system to manage the size of the pagefile actually works well in most cases. Pagefile fragmentation (at the filesystem level) can only occur when the initially chosen size is not large enough and the system has to extend it at run time. For win7 we have telemetry data that shows that even for systems with 1 GB of RAM, less than 0.1% of all boot sessions end up having to extend the pagefile, and this number is even lower for larger amounts of RAM. If you think you are in that 0.1% and your pagefile might be getting fragmented, you can manually increase its minimum size such that the total system commit charge stays below 80% even if you run all your apps at once (80% is the threshold at which the pagefile is automatically extended). This will make sure the pagefile is created once and then stays at the same size forever, so it can't fragment. The maximum size can either be set to the same value as the minimum, or you can make it larger so that the system is more resilient to memory leaks or unexpectedly high loads.
By the way, Windows doesn't use pagefiles as "extra memory", it uses them as a backing store for private pages, just like regular files are used as a backing store for EXEs/DLLs and memory mapped files. So if the system really has more than enough RAM (like in your second screenshot, where you have 3.6 GB of free pages) you shouldn't see any reads from the pagefile. You can verify this by going to the Disk tab in the resource monitor and looking for any disk IO from pagefile.sys. On smaller systems that don't have an excess of free pages you may see periodic reads from the pagefile, and this is expected because the total amount of data referenced by the OS/drivers/processes is larger than the total RAM. Forcefully keeping all pagefile-backed pages in memory (which is what disabling the pagefile does) would simply mean some other pages (memory mapped files, DLL code or data etc) would have to be paged out.
Regarding further troubleshooting steps: If the system runs fine with a larger pagefile (commit charge stabilizes well below 80%, and you no longer see gigabytes of modified pages accumulating in memory) then you don't really need to do anything. If the problem persists, you can check for any processes with an abnormally high commit charge, and also check kernel memory usage in task manager. If it's a kernel leak you can usually narrow it down to a particular driver using poolmon.exe or kernel debugger.

  • Extensive (very very very extensive) memory usage of host application with CS extension

    Hi!
I tried this only under Photoshop CS5 and InDesign CS5 under Windows 7.
When you open and close CS extension panel, the memory taken by Photoshop (InDesign) increases by 6-30MB!
In case of the simple HelloPhotoshop (HelloInDesign) panel from the examples, compiled in release mode, when you open it and close, - it's about 6-10MB each time you do it. And in case of a more complex panel, which uses AIR, etc. it's about 30MB per one panel close/open.
When I use some panels in 5-10 minutes Photoshop (InDesign) increases its memory pool from 600MB up to 1,2 GB. And more. And this memory is never freed, only until Photoshop (InDesign) shutdown.
I tried freeing all my arrays, killing display objects, etc. - nothing helped. Even a simple HelloPhotoshop (HelloInDesign) that does nothing eats memory.
By the way, InDesign eats memory a lot faster .

James, thank you for the very fast answer! I did various tests on the weekend on my computer and computer of my friend.
And I can say, that Debug flag doesn't affect memory consumption.   They still eat memory. My steps to reproduce are as follows:
    (Windows 7 32 bit)
    Photoshop CS5:
    1) set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\CSXS2Preferences\PlayerDebugMode to 0
2*) check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\CSXS2Preferences (just in case)
    3) Compile HelloPhotoshop example to ZXP and install via  Extension manager
    4) restart computer
    5) Run Photoshop CS5 - Memory consumption: 100 096 KB
    6) Open HelloPhotoshop and close it 10 times
    7) Memory consumption: 155 840 - 5,574 MB per one close/open
Maybe a garbage collector is expected to run and free this memory, but it never happened in my case. The memory pool was increasing to 1 GB when I was working with one of my panels - with no documents open in Photoshop
In InDesign I tried the same thing with HelloInDesign ( I had to close the panel completely and then open with Window | Extensions | HelloInDesign)
Memory consumption on start: 118 516
    Memory consumption after 10 open/close cycles: 197 516
    It's 7,9 MB per one close/open
It's the simpliest panel test. When I'm using AIR libraries the memory usage is increasing a lot faster.

  • Very high memory usage..possible memory leak?  Solaris 10 8/07 x64

    Hi,
I noticed yesterday that my machine was becoming increasingly slow, where once it was pretty snappy. It's a Compaq SR5250NX with 1GB of RAM. Upon checking vmstat, I noticed that the "Free" column was ~191MB. Now, the only applications I had open were FireFox 2.0.11, GAIM, and StarOffice. I closed all of them, and the number reported in the "Free" column became approximately 195MB. "Pagefile" was about 5.5x that size. There were no other applications running and it's a single user machine, so I was the only one logged in. System uptime: 9 days.
I logged out, logged back in, to see if that had an affect. It did not. Rebooted and obviously, that fixed it. Now with only FireFox, GAIM, and a terminal open, vmstat reports "Free" as ~450MB. I've noticed if I run vmstat every few seconds, the "Free" total keeps going down. Example:

In any event, we can see that FireFox is sucking up 145MB (??!?!!? crazy...) XSun, 200MB, and java 190MB. I'm running Java Desktop System (Release 3) so I assume that is what accounts for the the high memory usage RE: java process. But, XSun, 200MB?
Is this normal and I just need to toss another gig in, or what?
    Thanks

  • Very high memory usage with Yahoo Mail

After using Yahoo Mail for an hour or so my memory usage increases to a very high level.
Just now, after reading and deleting about 50 e-mails (newsletters etc.) I noticed Firefox 17 running slowly and checked the memory usage in Windows Task Manager (I am using XP) and it was 1.2 Gb. My older laptop only has 2 Gb of RAM. Yahoo Mail was the only thing open at the time.
I never notice this problem with Gmail which I mainly use. However I use Yahoo Mail for quite a few newsletters etc. that are less important and which I only check once a week or so.
I found the following bug report about 3 years old which almost exactly describes my problem.
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=506771
But this report involves a much earlier Firefox version, and at the end it seems to say that the problem was fixed. However it well describes my current issue with Firefox 17, especially the continual increase in memory while using the up/down arrow keys to scroll through Yahoo e-mails.
Is this normal to have to shut down and reopen Firefox every hour or so to clean out the memory? For some reason I only notice this when using Yahoo Mail. After using many other sites and having multiple tabs open for several hours I rarely reach that kind of memory usage. About the highest I've seen with other sites after a couple of hours is 600 Kb which is roughly when I start notice slower response times.
