Choosing application-layout

Hi everyone,
i don't know if i'm right here but i didn't found where else to post.
So here is the problem: I've developed a desktop application in java for which i have used the grouplayout since it seemed to me the easiest way to place the elements when i worked with the eclipse and netbeans framework. Now the elements are all placed related to my screen and my screen is 19". When i tried to install it on another computer came up the big problem. Some windows were so big that they couldn't be displayed as in my screen. Somewindows elements where not to be seen and and not to mention the fact that you couldn't even close it because you couldn't see the 'X' button of the window(except Alt+F4). Even after i tried to make those windows smaller to fit in the new screen i had the problem of the panels inside those windows. Some of the java panels i had build inside those windows were to big for that screen or better to say they were placed so that even if i made the big application window smaller by draging the sides with the mouse during running no panel would become smaller. All the elements were like static in their positions.
the Questions:
1) Is that the grouplayout is suposed to do? And if yes than why to use such a layout? Why is it there?
2) What layout should i use in the future not to have this problem again?
p.s: an example of what i want is any internet browser. While trying to write on this textarea if i maximize the window the element will be i think rebuild to fit in the new size. This textarea will become bigger and also the other way around if i try to make this window smaller this textarea will become smaller. This is something that my application does not do and i think that is the fault of the grouplayout.

GroupLayout was designed to be used by IDE's, not human beings.
What layout should i use in the future not to have this problem again?You don't use a single layout. That is a limitation of using an IDE.
Generally people start with a BorderLayout. Then you add a toolbar to the North and and a status bar to the south. That leaves the Center for you main application. You would use whatever layout manager or combination of layout manager you require to get the desired effect.
So start by reading the Swing tutorial on "How to Use Layout Managers" to become familiar with them and then experiment.

You mean if you want to have a user-resizeable application?
If so, all 3 layouts work.
If you can tell us what you want to build very briefly, we can help you pick a layout, however, as I said, this isn't super-important and you can change this as your application begins to take shape.
I generally use a vertical layout for my applications for example, but not because it's best, none of the 3 can be considered that, simply because I have more vertical elements than horizontal ones or that need to be placed in specific places given (x,y).

In the lower menu bar click the Settings icon. You will see all the fonts and sizes for different locations for typing there.

My "Choose Application" list of apps is replaced with iTunes list

I have a problem with something being corrupted in the "Choose Applications" dialog. Instead of a list of apps, there is a dropdown menu called "iTunes" and there is a list of songs where the application list should be. Has anyone seen this error, and is there a database file that I can check for corruption or replacement?

You should be able to change iTunes to whatever application that you want.
The next time you get the "Choose Application" dialogue, select the application in the list of application on your computer.
If that does not work, please post a screen shot of the window in question.

How to open the choose application dialog on Mac?

Hi all,
I want to know how can we open the "choose application" dialog from InDesign. I want to give this functionality through right click context menu.
At present CS4 has this feature - steps are as follows:
1.Create a document.
2.Place an item on the document.
3.Now select the placed item and right click on it.
4.Go to "Edit With->Other..." option.
5.Choose application dialog opens up and user can select the application in which he/she wants to open the selected item.
I want the same behavior but not able to understand how to open the choose application dialog on Mac. I have already achieved this on windows.
I think that there might be some system API's for Mac to get this working.
Please let me know about this, any help will be appreciable.

Is this not sufficient? Looks like you get some defaults then an "other" at the bottom as well. Control click or right click, when using the white arrow on the image.

When I download Xcode I get a choose application to open message. I think I need a 10.6.8 version but can only find a mountain lion. Where can I get the correct version?

I'm trying to install MacPorts but need Xcode. WEhen I try to install Xcode I get a choose application message. I think it is because I am trying to install an OSX Mountain Lion version but I can't find a version for 10.6.8. Does anyone know where I can get one?

Choose application at startup

When I first turn on my iMac, in the start up process it now offers/challenges me with the "Choose Application" page. I dismiss it.
Why is this happening at startup?
How do I make it stop happening?

Nudged me in right direction.
Had installed an unpdated version of SpamSieve & that's what "Choose Application" was seeking.
File under "read the fine instructions." "Choose Application" was requesting attention for SpamSieve, but font was inconspicuous, so I just didn't see it.

Dialogue "Choose Application" After Launching App.

For a long long time I've had a problem where with some applications upon launching them I get a dialogue which says "Choose Application" in the title bar and then below that it says "Where is [Name of App]?". This dialogue box has the window for navigating the Finder (like an Open dialogue) and there is a button on bottom right with the word "Choose" on it. I have had a solution which is to find the application and then "choose" and that solves the problem it seems for that particular application.
However there is one application which presents this problem and I cannot solve it by that method. The application is 1Password, in particular the plugin on the web browser which, when invoked, will bring up this dialogue. I have taken this up with 1Password and they have recommended I reinstall my browser plugin, which I had already done. However I don't think the problem is with 1Password, it is something odd about my OS. Amazingly the same problem is on my MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro.
I used the Onyx utility to rebuild Launch Services thinking that might help, but it has made no difference.
I would be grateful for any suggestions as to a solution.
I have Mavericks OS 10.9.5 on both computers.

We need to know exactly how much RAM you have and exactly what you have your monitor resolution set to.
If you have less than 2GB of RAM, forget it; I know the ReadMe file says you need a minimum of 512 MB, but that's unrealistic. It's enough for Photoshop CS3 to launch, but not to work comfortably and consistently. The monitor resolution should be at least 1024x768.
20 GB of available disk space in practice is marginal for the Mac OS X swap files (especially in case of one of the Leopards) to share with Photoshop's Scratch Disk. I'm not surprised you're crashing. Just for reference, I have a separate, dedicated internal 160 GB hard drive just for Photoshop's Scratch Disk alone.
Also, any time a hard drive—any hard drive—approaches 80% used space, you're in deep trouble already.
With a bigger boot drive or making much more space available in your current one, an external hard drive as Photoshop scratch disk, maximizing your RAM to as much as the machine will take (if it takes at least 2GB) and downgrading to Tiger 10.4.11, your G4 PowerBook should run CS3 just fine.
If CS4 ran on Panther, I would even downgrade to it from Tiger; I have no use for Spotblight and the Dashboard anyway and have permanently disabled both. In the case of Leopard, If I were ever to run it, I would disable the massively intrusive Time Machine and Spaces as well.
That's my personal opinion based on equally personal experience.

'Choose Application' powering up MacBook Pro

I purchased a new MacBook Pro (had an older MacBook running Lion) and after I transferred all my data and applications, I keep getting a 'Choose Application' pop-up for iChat after I power-up my computer.
How do I get rid of that since I'm using iMessage in Mountain Lion?

It sounds like you have an AppleScript in your login items that expects to find iChat.

"Choose Application Defaults" window NEVER goes away

i am running DVDSP 4.2.0 on a dual 2.5ghz G5 w/6GB of RAM 10.4.10 and every time i start DVDSP it prompts me to choose application defaults. Show at startup is UNchecked. i click ok, then it prompts me again. it also prompts me when i close the program. what is going on? i've deleted my preference file and that did nothing. any help would be much appreciated.

I would try a persmissions repair. Also, check the permissions on the prefs folder and file. There was a trick discussed here a while ago about locking the prefs file to prevent the prefs being changed, but this behavior sounds like the same type of situation, particularly since it seems to be asking on both startup and quit, when the program is attempting to modify the prefs.

Looking for a way to directly choose keyboard layout.

I'm looking for a way to organise separated keyboard keys combinations (or single keys - the best) for every keyboard layout. I want to be able to choose layout directly. One unique key (keys combination) for each layout.
One way may be smth. like setting a key to execute a command:
setxkbmap -layout "us,ru"
and
setxkbmap -layout "ru,us"
For keys setup in OpenBox may be used obkey, for example.
In general it works. But in such a case, when not latin/english layout is the first one, or even single one, in the command's layout list, applications will not react on Ctrl-S, Ctrl-Z and so on. It do not depend on current layout, it depend on the first entry in last sequence to be used in the layouts list.
I'm shure there are some other better ways to implement the idea. Please, give me advise: what a tool, or tool set to study and use?

Is it that Ctrl-[S,Z] don't work or that they change locations because the keyboard layout has been modified? The first is a problem, the second is to be expected if you are changing the keyboard layout.

Layout itself and layout switching mechanics are too different objects (or classes) in terms of programming. I'm not shure I'll be on a right way, if I'll decide to dive deeply into syntax of '/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg' and '/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/*' (mentioned at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … _xorg.conf ) and hacking of ready to use layouts. If I'm searching for a way to switch them only. Am I right?
My suggestion isn't that you use the XkbOptions switch since this won't work for what you are asking. Instead, I'm recommending you use a little keyboard shortcut utility, xbindkeys and use that to issue the setxkbmap command I mentioned earlier. All you have to do is bind the shortcut to keys that don't change across keyboard layout changes (if you have a number pad, an easy solution is to use a modifier + one of these keys as it won't change). This isn't a toggle like the xorg.conf edit, but can switch to any layout you choose to bind in any order you choose to perform.

Choosing page layouts for books in iPhoto 6

I am trying to create my first book in iPhoto version 6.0.6. I think I pretty much have a handle on how to do it, except for choosing the page layouts. I am using the picture book theme. When I am on a certain page, if I want to change the page layout, when I click on the "page layout" button, I only have the option of with or without text. I cannot choose to change this page to have one picture or to have three pictures; only to have what is already showing, with or without text.
Do only newer versions have this option?
Also, I cannot find anywhere the option of changing the background color from white. I have seen the suggestions about scanning in other images to make backgrounds, but shouldn't there be at least another option besides white?

Choosing Application To Launch based on extension.

While trying to track down some finder issues I had to reset my Launch Services Database, now I'm having trouble getting things back the way I want them.
Specifically .rar and .cbr files are fighting each other. Technically, the only difference between them is the extension. A .cbr file is a renamed .rar file. Previously, though, .cbr's would open in a file reader when double clicked, and the rar files would open with MacPar to unrar them. Now, everytime I change the "Open With" settings for one of them, despite the message that it's only going to effect the files with the certain extension, it changes the program for both types.
Can anyone help me get this back to the way it was? Maybe just some raw editing of launch services..if that can even be done?
(a bad thought just occurred to me, I just did a security update as well today...Apple wouldn't have changed things with it so that the above no longer works as their way of dealing with that trojan script hidden as jpeg thing from a while ago, would they have?)
(maybe not on that...zip vs cbz (which is the same, as rar is to cbr) still works like it's supposed to.)

The file extension is only one of several ways that the OS uses to determine what a file is. When using the "Open With" to change what opens a specific file, the default application is set for that file, but when changing all documents, it doesn't use a file's extension, but rather the content type (for example "public.archive"). If the different extensions share a common content type, then whatever application opens that type gets used (I don't know how the OS chooses if there are multiple applications). Once the content type is set to something specific, I think it is pretty much stuck to that application. You might try using the "Show Inspector" (option - Get Info) to change the default application for a group of files.

Designing Swing Applications - Layout

When using JDeveloper to design a Swing application (not ADF Swing) is it possible to;
1. when viewing the design of a frame for example, is it possible to display a grid so that you can align components correctly?
2. when you have selected a layout from the properties editor for the panel you are working on, is it possible to display the grid lines of that layout so that you can clearly see what component/group of components are in each of the areas? Similar to when using Macromedia Dreamweaver and dragging components into a table where you can see which cell each component is currently within...
3. add additional swing layouts to JDeveloper so that they can be used within the properties editor? i.e. tablelayout or design grid layout for example
4. has anyone come across any guides/tutorials on using JDeveloper to design Swing based applications visually by dragging and dropping components from the palette?

The FormLayout as part of JGoodies managed makes the layout a lot easier - still a few things you have to get used to but it managed most of the hard stuff for your.

Choosing applications to open

Hi all. How can I choose the application to open downloaded files? Whenever I download a windows media file, MPEG Streamclip automatically opens, instead of windows media player, and it won't give me the option to change the default. Any suggestions?

Hmmm…did you try using Disk Utility to Repair Permissions and then try to change the default application? If that didn't (or doesn't) help, you could download RCDefault App and use it to map those files to Windows Media Player.
