Choosing different methods from switch statement

I've written 3 different methods that solve the same problem (a Fibonacci sequence) and want to combine them. So, first user inputs the n as number of Fibonacci numbers, and then chooses m as either 1-recursion, 2-iteration, or, 3-constant.
int m = ... //user input
int[] method = new int[11]; // array holding for 0<=n<=10
if (m>=1 && m<=3) {
    switch(m) {
     case 1: method[m] = recursion(n);
                         break;
     case 2: method[m] = iteration(n);
                         break;
     case 3: method[m] = constant(n);
                         break;
for (int i=0; i <= n; i++) {
     System.out.print(":");
     for (int j=1; j <= method[m]; j++) { // how to put "i" into chosen method's parameter ("n")
          System.out.print("*");
     System.out.println();

I've written 3 different methods that solve the same problem (a Tribonacci sequence: 0,1,1,2,4,7,13,24,44,... sum of previous three numbers) and want to combine them. So, first user inputs the n as number of Tribonacci numbers, and then chooses m as either 1-recursion, 2-iteration, or, 3-constant.
Either of these three methods outputs ":" and then the number of "*" that represent the Trib. number. For example:
:                     //Tribonacci(0)=0
:*                     //Tribonacci(1)=1
:*                     //Tribonacci(2)=1
:**                     //Tribonacci(3)=2
:****                     //Tribonacci(4)=4
:*******                     //Tribonacci(5)=7
:************                     //Tribonacci(6)=13Here is the relevant part of code:
int n = ... //user input
int m = ... //user input
int[] method = new int[11]; // array holding for 0<=n<=10
if (m>=1 && m<=3) {
    switch(m) {
     case 1: method[m] = recursion(n);
                         break;
     case 2: method[m] = iteration(n);
                         break;
     case 3: method[m] = constant(n);
                         break;
for (int i=0; i <= n; i++) {
     System.out.print(":");
     for (int j=1; j <= ??? ; j++) { // how to put "i" into chosen method's parameter ("n")
          System.out.print("*");
     System.out.println();
     The problem is with the inner for loop, that I don't know how to formalize the condition part. If, instead of "???", you would write "method[m]",
for (int j=1; j <= method[m] ; j++) and the user input would be "n=2" (two Trib. numbers, starting with 0; thus, the outer for loop prints ":" three times) and "m=2" (method "2-iteration"), output would be:
:        //missing star (*)
How to write condition that would, while using chosen method, simultaneously insert "i" as (chosen) method's parameter. That would make the condition for (int j=1; j <= ??? ; j++) increasing, and producing the right amount of stars (*)?
/* Sorry, for lengthy post, but I must make it as clear as possible*/
Peter, method would just invoke non-existing methods (there is only one full, either method[1] (recursion), or method[2] (iteration), or method[3] (constant)), so this won't work (I guess).

  • Editable textbox with text from switch statement.

    I'm trying to make form that has text fields that get pre-populated based upon dropdown choices. I tried to use else/if statements, but I was advised to use a switch statement.  The problem is that I NEED the end-user to be able to make changes to the textbox that is created/generated from the switch statement.  For example I have the code below.  It will switch the text in the textbox perfectly when I choose different items in the AddtlServicesDrop1 box.  But I need the end-user to be able to add more info to the "promotes roots" text....but everytime I type text into the box it disappears when a new cell/item is clicked.  Can anybody give me some help?
    //Custom Calculate script
    (function () {
        var Description1 = getField("AddtlServicesDrop1").value;
        switch (Description1) {
        case "Soil Test" : event.value = "To apply the right kind and amount of fertilizer. I need to test your soil. Our soil test will determine pH and nutrient needs (lime, sulfur, phosphorus, & potassium)."; break;
        case "Heavy Core Aeration": event.value = "Promotes roots"; break;
        case "Seeding": event.value = "Thin spots"; break;
        case "Lawn Disease Control Program" : event.value = "Prevent Disease"; break;
        case "Perimeter Pest Control": event.value = "Prevent Ants"; break;
        default: event.value = "";

    Use equals instead of ==
    String temp = textFieldCountry.getText();
    if (temp .equals("Netherlands"))
    return true;
    else
    return false;

    Hi,
    There are few changes which u need to make for making ur code work.
    1) In main method, in switch case change case A: to case 'A':
    Characters should be represented in single quotes.
    2) in case 'Q' change exit(0) to System.exit(0);
    3) The method static char menu() { should be changed to static char menu() throws IOException   {
    4) Change option = stdin.readLine(); to
    option = (char)stdin.read();
    Then compile and run ur code. This will work.
    Or else just copy the below code
    import java.text.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class StudentDriver{
         public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
              for(;;) {
                   /* Switch statement for menu manipulation */
                   switch(menu()) {
                        case 'A': System.out.println("You have selected option A");
                        break;
                        case 'B': System.out.println("You have selected option B");
                        break;
                        case 'C': System.out.println("You have selected option C");
                        break;
                        case 'D': System.out.println("You have selected option D");
                        break;
                        case 'S': System.out.println("You have selected option S");
                        break;
                        case 'Q':
                        System.out.println("\n\n\n\n\n\n\t\t Thank you for using our system..." +
                        "\n\n\t\t\t Good Bye \n\n\n\n");
                        System.exit(0);
         static char menu() throws IOException {
              char option;
              BufferedReader stdin = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
              System.out.println("\n\n");
              System.out.println("\n\t\t_________________________");
              System.out.println("\t\t| |");
              System.out.println("\t\t| Student Manager Menu |");
              System.out.println("\t\t|_______________________|");
              System.out.println("\n\t________________________________________");
              System.out.println("\t| \t\t\t\t\t|");
              System.out.println("\t| Add new student\t\t A \t|");
              System.out.println("\t| Add credits\t\t\t B \t|");

  • Static Methods & Switch Statement

    Need help with a switch statement and static methods. My program offers the user a menu to choose what they want to practice.

  • Differentiating between same exception thrown from 2 different methods

    Suppose I have a class CodeDAO which has 2 methods who both throw SQLException
    public int getLocationCode(String locationName) throws SQLException;
    public int getDepartmentCode(String departmentName) throws SQLException;Now I have a business method in which I have to use both of the above DAO methods.
    public int process() {
       try {
          CodeDAO codeDAO = new CodeDAO();
          int locationCode = codeDAO.getLocationCode("NJ");
          int departmentCode = codeDAO.getDepartmentCode("Sales");
       catch (SQLException e) {
    }If SQLException is thrown how will I know if it is thrown by the getLocationCode method or getDepartmentCode method?
    What are the different choices I have in differentiating between same exception thrown from different methods? And which choice do you guys prefer?
    Thanks

    Edited by: srhcan on Aug 9, 2012 2:54 PMLet me ask you this, what do you plan to do in the catch block? Do some sort of recovery? rollback? If it is just for logging purposes, I am pretty sure the exception message will give you enough information to find out where the error was.* I would like to give user a specific message based on which method fails. So if getLocationCode("NJ") fails the message can be: Unable to find code for Location "NJ". And if getDepartmentCode("Sales") fails the message can be: Unable to find code for Department "Sales".
    * I would like to print the exception's stacktrace in the log file.
    * I may do a rollback depending on if its an INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE statement.Well, in that case why not log it in the DAO methods themselves...inside getLocationCode and getDepartmentCode. Instead of trying to do the recovery/logging in the process method, do it in the individual dao methods. The calling classes should not be responsible for logging/recovery etc. It should be done in the DAO classes themselves and the DAO method should return an appropriate message/code to the consumer tier classes indicating the status of the transaction. Just my 0.02$.

  • Invoking java methods from C/C++ on the machine with different JREs

    I implemented Windows NT Service instantiating JVM and invoking several java methods. Everything works but I have an issue with running the service on the machine where multiple different versions of JRE have been installed. The service is calling java methods that require JRE 1.3 or later so I wrote the code that is setting system PATH from within the service based on the configuration stored in the external file. The problem is that the service requires jvm.dll to be in the PATH prior lunching it since this library is instantiated through the implicit linking. When I put jvm.dll in the same path as the service binary I can lunch it but JNI_CreateJavaVM fails and returns -1. This happens even if JRE 1.3 is in the system PATH prior lunching the service.
    Everything works if the system PATH contains references to JRE 1.3 and jvm.dll is removed from the service's directory.
    I am looking for an advice on what is the proper way to deal with invoking java methods from the C/C++ executable in the environment with different versions of JRE.
    Thanks, Kris.

    Here's a way I have done what you are asking about:
    What you want to do is make all of your linking happen at runtime, rather than at compile time. This way, you can edit the PATH variable before the jvm.dll gets loaded.
    Following is some code that I used to handle a dll of my own in this manner. You can decide if you want to write a "wrapper" dll, or if you find it simpler to approach the jvm.dll in this way.
    // Define pointer type for DLL entry point.
         typedef void JREPDLL_API (*EXECUTEREQUEST)(char*, Arguments&);
    // Set up path, load dll, and pass everything off to it.
    HINSTANCE javaServer = javaServer = LoadLibrary("jrepdll.dll");
    if (javaServer != NULL) {
    EXECUTEREQUEST executeRequest = (EXECUTEREQUEST)GetProcAddress(javaServer, "ExecuteRequest");
    if (executeRequest != NULL) {
    if (argc == 1)
         // Execute the request.
         executeRequest("-run", args);
    else
         // Execute the request.
         executeRequest("-console", args);
    Here's some code for how to edit the PATH:
              // Edit the PATH environment variable so that we use our private java.
    char *appendPt;
    char *newPath;
    char *path;
              char tmp[_MAX_PATH];
              // Get the current PATH variable setting.
    path = getenv("PATH");
              // Allocate space for an edited path setting.
              if (path != NULL)
                   newPath = (char*)malloc((_MAX_PATH * 2) + strlen(path));
              else
                   newPath = (char*)malloc((_MAX_PATH * 2));
              // Get upper part of path to desired directories.
              strcpy(tmp, filepath);
              appendPt = strstr(tmp, "dbin\\jreplicator");
              appendPt[0] = '\0';
    sprintf(newPath, "PATH=%sjava\\jre1.2.2\\bin;%sjava\\jre1.2.2\\bin\\classic", tmp, tmp);
    // Append the value of the existing PATH environment variable.
    // If there is anything, append it.
    if (path != NULL) {
         strcat(newPath, ";");
         strncat(newPath, path, (sizeof(newPath) - strlen(newPath) - 2));
    // Set new PATH value.
    _putenv(newPath);
              free(newPath);

    I can't get the menue I am used to in iTunes. It only states "Klargjør iPhone" (Norwegian). Something like "Start up your iPhone". I've done this several times, restarted the iPhone and my computer, but I can't get ready to sync... The phone is working ok and my backup data is restored into the phone.

  • Override a method from a different Type

    Below will hopefully highlight what I want to do. I am trying to override an instance's (Mammal) super class (Animal) method, from a class (Android) that doesn't inherit from either classes.
    Would Innerclasses be ideal in this case? Or Generics? If so, can you post a simple example.
    //Animal.java
    public class Animal
        public breathe()
    //Mammal.java
    public class Mammal
        public Android android;

            @Override
            type.breathe()

    you want the following?

    I have no clue what you mean by "all the different methods."  Here are my suggestions.
    First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
    Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
    If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
    At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
    If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Using a Switch statement for Infix to Prefix Expressions

    I am stuck on the numeric and operator portion of the switch statement...I have the problem also figured out in an if/else if statement and it works fine, but the requirements were for the following algorithm:
    while not end of expression
    switch next token of expression
    case space:
    case left parenthesis:
    skip it
    case numeric:
    push the string onto the stack of operands
    case operator:
    push the operator onto the stack of operators
    case right parenthesis:
    pop two operands from operand stack
    pop one operator from operator stack
    form a string onto operand stack
    push the string onto operand stack
    pop the final result off the operand stack
    I know that typically case/switch statement's can only be done via char and int's. As I said I am stuck and hoping to get some pointers. This is for a homework assignment but I am really hoping for a few pointers. I am using a linked stack class as that was also the requirements. Here is the code that I have:
       import java.io.*;
       import java.util.*;
       import java.lang.*;

    so, i did what flounder suggested:

  • "Choose input method" is behind keyboard so I can't use it

    I just upgraded to Kit Kat on my Galaxy S4, and I can no longer pick my preferred keyboard because the "choose input method" dialog does not close the keyboard when it opens like it used to, and so half of the dialog is hidden behind the keyboard.  Normally I would hit the back button to close the keyboard, except this closes the input selector dialog instead.  How do I change my active keyboard?

    OK, I can change the default keyboard from the settings panel, but that means I have to go into settings every time I need to change it (and I often switch back and forth between a few of them depending on what app I'm using because some keyboards are better suited for different tasks).  So the question then becomes is Verizon aware of this problem and how do I make sure they are so it gets fixed in the next update? (and how long before that update?)

  • How to invoke method from swing

    Aloha,
    Thanks in advance for help...
    I have created GUI, and want to use buttons to choose which Physics problem to solve. I have already coded the Physics in .java and have different methods for each one. I would like for the button to create an action that places the different problems on the panel, each with a section for information, given input and outputting the answers to solve for.
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
         { // [20]
               String actionCommand = e.getActionCommand();
               if (e.getActionCommand().equals("Quiz 1"))
                 Quiz1();
               }Quiz1 is a private void method that calls on a helper method to perform calculations.
    When I use the above command, it invokes the method, but not on the GUI panel, it comes up on the DOS screen. What command should I use to place the calculations and information for this method on the GUI? I know I need to separate and create areas of the panel for input, etc. But I want the method to take place on the GUI.
    Thank you for your time and energy.

    Hi - I have a question now regarding using a single button, to collect data from multiple fields, make calculations and then return figures to multiple fields.
    I thought I could read them into two different variables (valueIn, valueIn2, etc) and then apply them to the JTextField variables. I was experimenting with just passing the initial figures without making calculations...
    But just trying with two different fields, the compiler gives me an error for an "unreachable statement". How do I collect from multiple sources and return separate answers to different fields?
    I tried to look up definitions for compiler messages, but couldn't find anything regarding "unreachable statements". Therefore, I would also appreciate any suggestions about a dependable source to reference errors.

  • Calling 3 different servlets from a single servlet

    hi all,
    i am in lot of soup...i am new to servlets,etc....so help me pls.
    i need to call 3 different servlets from one servlet. all 3 servlets that i want to call perform different functions and execute queries on the database.
    what i am trying to do is:
    there is an html page that call a servlet called authenticate.java.(whose code is at the bottom of this page).
    the servlet authenticate.java should authenticate a user according to the password and username supplied in the html page.
    MAINLY:-
    i need to display 3 buttons to the authenticted user. those 3 buttons each should call 3 different servlets, which do different things.
    now in authenticte.java i set certain information in the session using session.putValue();
    further, whatever servlet is called, i need to use that information i set into the session...using session.getValue().
    PLS TELL ME HOW TO DO THAT...ALSO C IF THE BELOW CODE IS OK.
    ALSO TELL ME HOW TO END A SESSION. ALSO DO SERVLETS SUPPORT SESSIONS?
    I AM USING jdk1.3 and jsdk2.0.

    THANK YOU,
    REGARDS,
    ASHNA

    Hi Ashna,
    You have use three different forms for three buttons. But I think all are commented one.It will also work if you uncomment it.
    Else you can use only one Form without giving action in form tag. Use normal buttons instead of submit type buttons & call different JavaScript functions on onClick event for each button.
    Try this out.

  • Switch Statement

    I am new to Java and am trying to learn how to use and understand the nuances involved in using the Switch statment.
    I am trying to write an application that will calculate grades for a student. I can use the If Then Else Control structure for this (which runs) but I would like to incorporate the Switch Statement in place of the multiple if then else structure. Here is the code that I have for the application:
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class Switchgrades
    public static void main(String args[])
    String midone; String midtwo; String quiz; String homework;
    String last;
    double one; //first midterm
    double two; //second midterm
    double three;double four; double five; //final, quiz and homework scores
    double average; //GPA
    int a; int b; double c; double d; double f;int grade;
    midone = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter the first midterm"); //first score to add
    one = Double.parseDouble(midone);
    midtwo = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("please enter second midterm"); //second midterm to add
    two = Double.parseDouble(midtwo);
    last = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("please enter final exam score");//final exam score to add
    three = Double.parseDouble(last);
    quiz = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("please enter quiz score");//quiz score to add
    four = Double.parseDouble(quiz);
    homework= JOptionPane.showInputDialog("please enter homework score");//homework score to add
    five = Double.parseDouble(homework);
    average = (one + two+ three + four + five)/5; //average of all five scores
    switch (grade)
    case a: //this is where I become confused and lost. I don't what I need to do to make it run.
    {if(average >= 90)
         b = Integer.parseInt(average);
       JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"The total of all your scores is " + b+"\nYour final grade is an A");}
    / I am just using one choice to make it run. When I can make it run, I plan on incorporating the other grades.
    break;
    <=====================================================================>
    <=====================================================================>
    //else --->this is part of the if that works in another program
    // if(average >= 80 )
    // JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"The total of all your scores is " + average +"\nYour final grade is a B");
    //else
    //if(average >= 70 )
    // JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"The total of all your scores is " + average +"\nYour final grade is a C");
    //else
    //if(average >= 60 )
    // JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"The total of all your scores is " + average +"\nYour final grade is a D");
    //else
    //if(average <= 60 )
    <=====================================================================>
    <=====================================================================>
    default:
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"Sorry, you received a grade of " + average + ". \nYou failed.");
    System.exit(0);
    As you can see, I already have all the if then else statements set up--between the <==>. The program runs with the If's but I can two error messages when I incorporate the Switch statement.
    1) constant expression required.
    I have case a and i guess it is not a constant. Again, I don't understand switch well enough to figure what I need to do to correct it.
    2)"b = Integer.parseInt(average);" - cannot resolve the symbol--whatever that means. I have a "^" pointing at the period between Integer and parseInt.
    Can anyone help explain what I have to do to make this program work using Switch.
    I have not used Switch before and don't understand what I can use as opposed to what I must use for it to work.
    Thanks for your help.

    I don't really know how you want your program going, but here is what I think.
    1) From the start of the switch statement, where do you assign the value for "grade"? If you write the switch statement like below, you meant something like, if(grade == 'a'){...}, right!? Then, where did you get the "grade" from?
    switch (grade)
    case a:
    You may want declare variable "grade" as char and place if sentence like this before the switch.
    if(average >= 90)
    grade = 'a';
    else if(average >= 70)
    grade = 'b';
    switch (grade)
    case a:
    System.out.print("Your grade: A");
    break;
    case b:
    System.out.print("Your grade: A");
    break;
    Is that What you want???
    2)The method, Integer.parseInt(), takes String as parameter? Did you override this method? The variable "average" was declare as double, so why don't you just cast it to int??
