Clonning the Database

how to clone database (production DB)? please provide me steps to follow

Step 1
The first step is to locate all database files and the init.ora file.
SQL> select name from v$database;
SQL> select name from v$datafile;
Step 2
Create missing folders on new server or location
Step 3
The next step is to copy the database files to the new location. The database you are cloning must be down before you copy any files to ensure the SCN is correct.
Move the init.ora file
Step 4
Change the init.ora to your new name. Change the value to db_name from old name to new name.
Additional parameters you may need to change:
audit_file_dest
background_dump_dest
control_files
core_dump_dest
log_archive_dest
user_dump_dest
Step 5
Issue this SQL command on the old database :
SQL> alter database backup controlfile to trace;
Edit the trace file so it appears as:
STARTUP NOMOUNT
CREATE CONTROLFILE SET DATABASE "NEWNAME" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
MAXLOGFILES 16
MAXLOGMEMBERS 3
MAXDATAFILES 100
MAXINSTANCES 8
MAXLOGHISTORY 454
LOGFILE
GROUP 1 (
'/u01/app/oracle/oradata/NEWNAME/redo01.log',.....
Save as script and move to the new location.
Note the SET DATABASE in the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement..
Note: The Redo logs don’t appear until the database is opened, but this script creates them.
Step 6
Make sure your new init is in the /dbs folder
Make sure you moved and renamed the password file
Run
SQL> @cr_control.sql
Step 7
Open the NEW database
Before opening the NEW database, you will need to perform incomplete recovery. After recovery you can open the database using the RESETLOGS option as show below:
SQL> alter database recover database until cancel using backup controlfile;
SQL> alter database recover cancel;
SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
Note: The first command produced an error. It wanted archive that did not exist, I also did not move any archive over to the new system.
The second command should be run regardless of the error and it should run without error. If the third command runs without error you probably have a successful clone and your redo logs should be present.
Step 8
Note: I would setup the new database using NETCA before starting this step.
Change the DBID number (make sure the init.ora has remote_login_passwordfile=SHARED)
1. Check the DBID before change
SQL> select dbid , name from v$database ;
2. shutdown immediate;
3. startup mount
startup mount pfile='/u01/app/oracle/admin/NEW/pfile/initNEW.ora'
4. execute NID
nid target=sys/oracle@NEW (oracle should be the sys password)
5. Create a new password file
Rename the old right now if it’s the same name
orapwd file=/u01/app/oracle/product/10.1.0/dbs/orapwNEW password=oracle entries=50
Note: oracle is the sys password
6. startup mount pfile='/u01/app/oracle/admin/NEW/pfile/initNEW.ora'
7. SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
Database altered.
8. check the new DBID
SQL> select dbid,name,open_mode,activation#,created from v$database;
Step 9
Check the new database name.
SQL> select name from v$database;
Step 10
Create a binary init.ora file
SQL> create spfile from pfile='/u01/app/oracle/admin/NEW/pfile/initNEW.ora';
Restart the database

    Its a testing scenario.
    In one of the interview I had faced this quesiton.
    Kindly, any one guide me in this regard,

    This is a documentation forum.
    You need to read that documentation.
    Specifically, go to http://docs.oracle.com, select the version of the database you are working with, and put 'clone' into the search box. One link for 10gR2 is http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14220/startup.htm#sthref1874
    IN the future, please have the courtesy to
    1) post in an appropriate forum, as described by the title of the forum
    2) Include product (database) version and operating system

    Hello Tawfik,
    You can use RMAN duplicate with the following link for 9i.

    If you want to clone manually then follow this thread

    exp full database from 8i and import it in 10g. You can exp only particular schemas, it really depends, what kind of data you need, how much data You need to import and so on. But exp/imp is the answer how to get data into new database.
    Check metalink note 733205.1.

  • How can we clone the Oracle database in new Oracle Home

    Hi,
    I would like to clone oracle database into new oracle home. How can we set it using OEM.
    I am using 10g grid control. Target db is on solaris
    Thanks
    Naveen

    after logging into target database, under maintenance tab, data movement header; ther is "clone database" option. When you click on it; you'll see :
    Clone Database uses RMAN to duplicate a database from:
    -- An open database in ARCHIVELOG mode, or
    -- An open database in NOARCHIVELOG mode (restart required), or
    -- A saved working directory from previous cloning
    Clone Database performs the following operations:
    -- Backup each database file and store it in a working directory
    -- Transfer each backup file from source to destination host
    -- Restore each backup file to existing destination Oracle Home
    -- Recover the cloned database with saved archived log files
    -- Open the cloned database with resetlogs
    It seems to be for cloning to a different host, but i guess you can chose the same host for source and destination. (I've never used cloning on em by the way :))
    But firstly, you should create a new oracle home, you can simply copy your oracle home with a new name (cp -R /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0 /oracle/app/oracle/product/10.2.0.new) or make a new installation.
    I suggest you to do this cloning with CLI. You should take a full backup with RMAN, copy the oracle home, create a new initNEWSID.ora file and nomount the database, restore (or simply copy) controlfiles, restore database (with set newname commands), recover database, open resetlogs.

  • Can I restore the database (clone) to different Host/User account?

    Hi,
    We use RMAN catalog that backup our production database using "oracle" user (OS user is "oracle") account. We wanted to clone this database to different host and to different OS user (for example is "oradev") account. Both user has same group (oradba). Can I able to restore the control fies/data files to different user account (the account that wasn't backed up).
    Please update if you know of any documents/pdfs/links that explains this detail.
    Thanks in advance for your assistance,
    Ranga.

    Yes, the user account should be transparent assuming the backuppieces have the appropriate user/group permissions.

    I moved from an old macbook to a new one.  I have installed Office for Mac 2011. I copied all my files from my old notebook onto a hard drive.  On trying to setup my mail, i went into my hard drive and accessed microsoft user identities, office 2011 and it shows the database but wont let me select it.  Its almost as if the file is there but not accessable.  I desperately need to access my old mail.  How do I do this?  I am fairly confident that I copied all files off my old notebook.  Is there a way for me to search for the Database file?  Maybe I copied it to a different location?  Urgent help please.

    Hello mafrerichs and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
    Simplest way is to use Target Disk mode:
    How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
    and hook to another Mac and use CCC or SuperDuper and clone your HD to another drive.
    You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

  • How do I clone a database but still apply old archivelogs? Getting ORA-1223

    Hi,
    I'm doing a clone from PROD to DEV in 9.2.0.6 for 11.5.10.2 on Solaris 9. I worked through many issues, such as copying the files, changing the init<SID>.ora to the new DEV values, re-editing all of the env files with the new SID on the new (target) machine name, etc.
    The data is about 2 weeks old and so I was hoping to not only recover this database during the clone, but ALSO roll forward, applying all of the old archive logs to date. (Nothing changed in the middle tier save for a few
    paramaters in the xml file which I've already edited).
    Normally when I'm cloning -- I do it with fresh/recent data files so I don't care about reseting the archivelogs, I just reset them and say si-a-nerra!
    But.... now I am trying to both change the database name (SID) and apply a bunch of archvie logs (about 2 weeks worth). Note: I also recreate the control file as part of my whole process too.
    Here's the problem I am having -- after doing a startup nomount in the new location (with my new environment files, data files, etc all in place) and
    then doing @recreate.sql (which is the edited control file script from the 'backup controlfile to trace' on prod) I am getting this message:
    SQL> @recreate.sql
    CREATE CONTROLFILE SET DATABASE "DEV11i" NORESETLOGS
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01503: CREATE CONTROLFILE failed
    ORA-01223: RESETLOGS must be specified to set a new database name
    - well OK this message makes sense to me - yes I could easily just keep the new name and say RESETLOGS, but I don't want to do this !!! I want to set the new name for the clone, and keep the logs unset so that I can then recover until cancel, applying my 2 weeks worth of logs.
    - What is the solution? Do I have to just bite the bullet and do RESETLOGS instead? (and in effect make my recovery practice seperate from my current cloning tasks)
    - Or should I change everything back to the old (original name) LIVE11i (for Prod), including the env files, data files etc .. on the new (target) machine.., recover the database completely (maybe even disconnect it from the network and rename the (target) machine to the old prod server name), and then do another whole procedure (which I'd have to find - but I know it's similar) for changing the SID...
    Please help. Thanks in advance! Marvin.

    Oviwan,
    Because of getting the error message, the recreate controlfile has not
    gone through, thus I have not yet reset the logs.
    What I'm going to do for now is in fact change the script to SET
    the new name for DEV11i and RESET the logs, just to test my clone. The
    data will be 2 weeks out of date, but I'll have verified that my files from tape
    work (these files had come of the tape, and are now 2 weeks old).
    To make the DB fresher, I can just re-clone with RESET using last night's
    hot backup from PROD. That'll freshen DEV's files up no problem.
    I had wanted to test all these archive logs and see if they apply nicely,
    but I'll just have do that on a separate box (disconnected from the network)
    where I keep the DB name and machine name the same as prod.
    Thanks for your help! Marvin.

  • Facing problem while changing the database at runtime

    hi everyone,
    Before posting this thread, i have gone through the various posts addressing the problem....but still iam unable to get the solution for this problem.
    The report has been generated in one system, so the database properties (connection string....) are hardcoded in the report file...
    Now when iam trying to change the database, it is still connecting to the system where the report file was created.
    I have tried the changeDatasource() method, but it didnot worked....
    here is the code for changeDatasource() method

    The names are dispalyed correctly.......but once i set the table location...i.e through the following method..
    clientDoc.getDatabaseController().setTableLocation(tables.getTable(i),newTable);
    every time i can see only one table i.e. properties are set for the first table ........and each time the properties are being set for the first table only.....i dont no what is happening to the rest of the tables..
    I have posted the method in the above post.....can any one please trace out the problem
    Note: when i comment the following code, i can see all the tables
    clientDoc.getDatabaseController().setTableLocation(tables.getTable(i),newTable);
    when i uncomment it, i can see only first table repeating every time...

  • TopLink cached object changed are not commited to the database

    Hello,
    I'm using TopLink 10 and I have a writing issue with a use case:
    1. I read an obect using TopLink that is in the IdentityMap
    2. Using JSF this object is edited throught a web form.
    3. I give the modified object to the data layer and try to modify inside a unit of work:
    UnitOfWork uow = session.acquireUnitOfWork();
    //laspEtapeDef comes from JSF and has been modfied previously
    LaspEtapeDef laspEtapeDefClone = uow.readObject( laspEtapeDef );
    //I update the clone field
    laspEtapeDefClone.setDescription(laspEtapeDef.getDescription());
    uow.commit();4. I use again the same object to display it once modified.
    The object is modified in the cache but the modified fields are never commited to the database. This code works only if I disable the cache.
    So, I've modified my JSF form to send the fields instead of modifying directly the object.
    My question: Is there a way to commit changes mades in an cached object?
    I've found the following section in the documentation, that explain the problem but doesn't gives the solution:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14571_01/web.1111/b32441/uowadv.htm#CACGDJJH
    Any idea?

    How are you reading in the object initially? The problem is likely that you are modifying an object from the session cache. When you then read in the object from the uow, it uses the object in the session cache as the back up. So there will not appear to be any changes to persist to the database.
    You will need to make a copy of the object for modification, or use the copy from the unitofwork to make the changes instead of working directly on the object in the session. Disabling the cache means there is no copy in the session cache to use as a back up, so the uow read has to build an object from the database.
    Best Regards,
    Chris
