Clustered Oracle VM server 2.1.2 won't reboot or hangs

Has anyone experience with clustered Oracle VM servers 2.1.2 seem to be hang or won't reboot until the server is power reset?
Every time I reboot the master pool server, the server seems to be hung or won't reboot. To solve this problem I have to power reset the server or reboot the other server in the server pool or vice versa. This is not what I wanted. What do i need to do to have a smooth reboot of master server pool without reboot the other server in the server pool?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Avi,
There is no entries logged after issuing the reboot command on ovm-s-2 or ovm-s-1.

• 848P Won't reboot - just hangs!?

Hi,
I recently installed the new 848P motherboard and it works fine most of the time. But sometimes when i switch it on the screen just stays black and if i check the Diagnostic lights on the pci card light no 2 (Memory Check) stays lit. According to the manual this indicates the memory has failed initial tests?
I'm using PC3200 400Mhz DDR 1GB (2 x512MB) - which is brand new.
I though my old 848P might have had a problem so this is my second 848P and it does the same thing.
Weird though as most of the time it works fine. Another strange and very irrating thing is that when i go to Reboot from Windows XP it shuts down and fails to start up. The power stays on but the screen is blank.
If my memory was bad it wouldn't start up at all or work properly at all would it?
At the moment its hit and miss whether it will boot and reboot successfully, but when it does boot and load XP ok it runs fine....
Any ideas?

Hi NovJoe,
Thankyou for your reply, your help is very much appreciated.
I should point out, although its probably obvious ;-) , that i'm not an overclocker - it does interest me but i have zero experience of timings etc...
Words fail me as to why MSI have released a motherboard which fails to work with standard PC3200 DDR RAM. What happened to the days of checking the spec of the mobo and just ordering memory as usual.
Having checked around i now found there are memory compatibility charts showing memory which does or doesn't work with the different types of MSI boards out there. This seems absoultely crazy to me. Whats even more crazy is that the compatibillty charts for the 848P arn't even up to date, mostly showing only 256MB strips from companies i've never heard of!
Never in my 12 years of working in IT have i ever had so many problems getting 1 component to work properly. I have wasted so much time and sleep looking into what has been causing my system problems and now that it seems CL3 memory or timing settings are to blame.
Why don't MSI make a point of making this clear to prospective customers. This board is more pickier than a Vegetarian in a Butchers shop as far as memory goes! There is no mention of the more detailed spec's of the memory thats likely to work with this board on MSI's site whatsoever...
As i mentioned before in other postings, i actually sent the first 848P board back to my supplier beleiving it to be faulty! This is really going to damage MSI's reputation if they don't get the boards compatibility up to scratch and more importantly give much better information on what and what not to use!
I really don't like the fact that the 2 x 512MB CL3 Crucial memory that i bought won't work without some tweeking in the BIOS - if it does at all. My system works fine if i leave just one strip in, so for some reason it doesn't like both in at the same time.....
For those of you reading this that might be having the same problems, the DDR ram i am trying to use is :
Crucial 2 x 512MB 184DIMM PC3200 NP CL3 - Manfacturer code CT6464Z40B
Therefore, to save my sanity and my wallet. Please can you tell me what will work with this 848P.
I have shortlisted 2 decent looking memory chips :
Kingston Value 512MB 184DIMM PC3200 NP CL2.5 KVR400X64C3A/512 - Heres the URL for it ( http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/PartsInfo.asp?ktcpartno=KVR400X64C25/512 )
I found the Kingston memory by using their memory locator for MSI boards, it listed the 256MB version of this chip as compatible but there was no mention of the KVR400X64C3A/512 that i want...... i want to go for this i as noticed you NovJoe use Kingston Value RAM and i want CL2.5 latency! ;-)
The other is :-
Corsair (TWINX1024-3200C2) 1024MB DDR400 Memory Module - This is more expensive but i'm concerned that there is no mention of latency for this memory on the supplier or manufacturers website...
I really have been looking for hours, searching the msi forums for both of these memory strips to see if others mention them, i've searched long and hard on the net to try and find which are compatible too.... Although MSI memory compatible list has quite a few types on there the main makes available to me are either Kingston or Corsair.
I've never known a situation like this before, why oh why is this motherboard so damn picky about which RAM it will work, why should i need to set it up in the BIOS - without this forum and your kind help i'd have absolutely no idea where to start and would just assume tha the mobo was faulty again!
I'm really angry about this, but please don't think any anger is directed at you NovJoe, i'd really appreciate your help getting this working.
I'm sending the Crucial memory back today, so i'd really appreciate your decision on which DDR400 to buy to use in the 848P - i'd like 1GB in total.
Thank You

• How to create clustering on oracle application server on windows

hi,
i want to know how can i create clustering on oracle application server on windows machine.
regards

I think that you need to configure Web cache for this as a frontend, and two or more servers behind it.
Try to read :

• Problem with clustering of oracle application server 10.1.3.1

Hi
I have clustered two instances of oracle application server 10.1.3.1 running on solaris.
Instance 1
<notification-server interface="ipv4">
<port local="6100" remote="6200" request="6003"/>
<ssl enabled="true" wallet-file="$ORACLE_HOME/opmn/conf/ssl.wlt/default"/>
<topology>
<nodes list="10.x.x.1:6201"/>
</topology>
</notification-server>
Instance 2
<notification-server interface="ipv4">
<port local="6101" remote="6201" request="6004"/>
<ssl enabled="true" wallet-file="$ORACLE_HOME/opmn/conf/ssl.wlt/default"/>
<topology>
<nodes list="10.x.x.2:6200"/>
</topology>
</notification-server>
But when i log on to enterprise manager i get the following message on top of the page:
You have more than one instance of the Application Server Control application running in this cluster. This is not a recommended configuration and could lead to unexpected problems. Please stop the additional instances of Application Server Control or disable routing to these instances.
When i click on one of the instances, i get the session expired error.
what is the problem behind this?
regards,

In the doc, it states that you should only ever have one active instance of application server control running in a cluster at a time -- ASC was not designed to operate as a session sharing application, so your session state is specific to one instance. If for some reason you were directed to the ASC application on the other instance, you get errors.
You can use the OC4J admin_client.jar utility or the opmnctl command to shut down the ascontrol application in one of the instances.

• About Oracle RAC-CLUSTERS-HTMLDB-APLICATION SERVER

Im trying to learn about Oracle RAC and its integration with others Oracle tools and have some questions that I want to know .
1º) I undertand that a Oracle Cluster are vaious computers that store a extensive Database.
2º) I also understand that a RAC are various computers that keep instances of a ORACLE database, and this database can be store on a CLUSTER.
Now my questions:
Can I have others computers with ORACLE TOOLS, by example, HTMLDB ,to serve web pages with information store in that CLUSTER, or ORACLE APPLICATION SERVER, to serve ORACLE FORMS AND REPORTS by example, also with information store in that . taking information from the instances of database working in the RACś Computer?
By Example Can I have 5 computers , every one with a diferent tool, 3 with htmldb and 2 with aplication server, taking information from one computer of RAC, that have a instances of this database working?
Regards everybody

2º) I also understand that a RAC are various computers that keep instances of a ORACLE database, and this database can be store on a CLUSTER.
Not quite ...
Each part in a RAC IS AN INSTANCE, and each instance controls the same database as all the other instances.
Therefore, HTMLDB, which is simply kept in a database, can be delivererd to the users from any instance, or from all, in the RAC.
FORMS and REPORTS can connect to any instance in the RAC and get exactly the same data from exactly the same database as when connecting to any other instance in the RAC.
Therefore, in a RAC, you do not have different instances 'with different tools'. An external-to-database tool, such as forms, points to one olf the instances. An internal-to-database tool, such as htmldb, is available through all of the instances.

• Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.5 and SSL

Hi,
We want to use SSL in combination with Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.5. I installed Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.5 on Windows 2008R2 64 bit. After that I installed 64 bit java(jdk-6-26-windows-x64.exe) to run jvm in 64bit. I'm facing the following problem. The wallet manager won't run on Windows 2008R2 64bit because we're using 64bit jdk. There is also a commandline version; mkwallet. When I start this up it says "Oracle Wallet Commandline tool for 32bit Windows" I also can't create a certificate or certificate request. When I install a 32bit java version I also get a different JAVA_HOME, and that I don't want.
What if I install Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.5 on a 32bit OS and use there also a 32bit jdk, then use wallet manager to generate a certificate? Can I than use this wallet on the 64bit windows and 64bit jdk?
What other options are there available in this situation to use SSL? Is for example keytool from java an option?
Kind regards,
Herman

Hi,
Here an update on this situation. I installed Oracle SOA Suite 10.1.3.5 on Windows 2008r2 64bit in a seperate environment. After that I installed the 32bit version of the jdk we used in the test and production environment. In the seperate environment I can startup Oracle Wallet Manager. Here I created a certificate request and then import the reply certificates from the CA. Then the wallet says "Certificate ready". In the directory where the wallet is, I put the certificate request, and the reply certificates. After that I copy the wallet-directory to the test environment(with a 64bit jdk) and in the ssl.conf file I point to the copied wallet-directory. After a restart of the app-server I got SSL.

• Oracle Application Server 10G base release on AIX 5.1 L

We are having 2 AIX Servers with AIX 5L V5.1 working through cluster HACMP V 4.5 and Oracle Application Server 9.0.2.3 ported on one of its node se,because of the bug in the AS we have disabled the clustering services on the node porting the Application Server as the AS crashes as soon as the services shift over to the node on which it is installed.
We now want to enable the cluster services so we are upgrading the AS to 10g base release.Can this be done on AIX V 5.1 with HACMP V 4.5 .The certification matrix on the metalink doesnot say anything about this.
any information regarding this would be really helpful to us

• Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.3.0 OC4J Restarting

Oracle ADF application is deployed to the AS from JDeveolper 10.1.3.3.0 and runs fine initially but after continual use the OC4J returns a runtime exception and restarts.
1. This instance is not associated with an infrastructure but it is on a server with 10.1.2.2.0 Infra and middle tier instances.
2.The error occurs while using a web app. It all works fine at first, can nav pages, view records from the db just fine. Then after say 15mins the page returns Internal Server Error message at which time I check the Oracle app server ctrl to find the error below. That error is displayed in the actual app server ctrl page.
After a few minutes I can refresh the web app page and it returns to the home page working fine again until the next exception and restart. Sometimes as a result of this issue the server will not OC4J will not restart and the page will stop working altogether. At this point I cannot ever restart the OC4J. I have to Restart the entire server machine.

Greetings,
First I would recommend turning up your logging level to FINEST to glean more informatin regarding the error that is occurring. Please post these data along with any related Messaging service configuration information. It is possible that two services are attempting to make the same connection and it is causing one or the other to fail. You might also review the information in your opmn config file. Does the 10.1.2.2 instance remain running during the OC4j restart?
OPMN Configuration:
10.1.20 How to Specify Ports for State Replication in OPMN
When you deploy an application utilizing state replication in a managed Oracle Application Server, OPMN dynamically allocates the ports that are used to propagate state across the cluster. You can restrict this allocation to a range of ports for an application that has peer-to-peer replication enabled. Specifying ports for state replication might be necessary in an installation with a firewall or network that uses a well-defined port range.
To specify a range of ports for peer-to-peer state replication
Add a <port> element to an OC4J instance configuration in the opmn.xml file.
Specify the name of an application that has peer-to-peer replication enabled as the value of the id attribute of the <port> element.
Specify a range of ports in the range attribute of the <port> element.
For example, for deployment of an application named rac-web that is set up for peer-to-peer replication, the line labeled <port id=rac-web .../> in the following OC4J instance configuration tells OPMN to use ports 15213 to 15214 for state replication:
<port id="default-web-site" range="80-100" protocol="http"/>
<port id="rmi" range="12401-12500"/>
<port id="rmis" range="12701-12800"/>
<port id="jms" range="12601-12700"/>
<port id="rac-web" range="15213-15214"/>
For more information about state replication, see Chapter 9, "Application Clustering in OC4J," in the Oracle Containers for J2EE Configuration and Administration Guide.Quoted from:

• How to install and where to get kernal source for Oracle VM Server

Hi guys
Can someone point me in the right direction for oracle VM Server kernal source, as the server I am using won't ping, and found its cause it doesnt recognise the network adapter, says there is no drivers.
But the HP website states I have to have the kernal source install so that I can build the driver.
Any suggestions or help on the matter?
Thanks

Thanks
I got my server to ping.
Now I have ran into more trouble.
I have been following ORacles installation guide for installing a Virtual Machine, but am struggling to install it, as their instructions don't match whats on the screen.
They tell you to copy each CD into a directory.....
and then mount that directory as an NFS mount.
I done all that
and then it tells u to do virt-install
So I do that, and it all works great, until the end part, its mean to ask you what is your installation souce directory , and your supposed to put nfs:selfhostname_ip_address:/path/to/files
and away you go.
However my server says " what would you like to use as your virtual CD image"
and so I type nfs:server_ip_address:/path/to/files etc, and I get the error CD MUST EXIST
so to get around this, I just typed /OVS/iso_pool/Disc1.img
and away we go, instlalation starts....
However THe instlalation then asks for disc 2, and then I get stuck, how do I tell it, that I changed the disc, and its ready?
I tried an installation of mounting the disc1 iso from a cd to /mnt
and then wen it wanted disc 2 I dont umount -l /mnt ...it said inodes busy, so I just forced the eject CD physically ont he drive
and then mount /dev/cdrom /mnt , for disc3
but it didn't detect I changed a cd.
Can anyone help me, its really urgent have to get this server up and running by today if possible.

• Mod_oc4j Oracle HTTP Server 10.1.2.0.2

Hi!!
In this moment i made a installation in HA environment of Oracle AS 10gr2, but now i need plug a cluster the oc4j 10gr3 to this environment.
The question is: if i have a cluster in the web layer with Oracle HTTP Server 10g r2, can i use the Mod_oc4j to redirect request to the oc4j 10gr3 cluster? or i need install the Oracle HTTP Server 10gr3 for do it?
Any doc
Thanks in advance!!!

Hmm interesting question. Theoretically, I don't see why not, but the question is that 10.1.3 is a loose cluster managed by opmn and dcm so I don't know if the "cluster" option will still work. Why not give it a try "cluster:clustername" check the HA guide/clustering guide on mod_oc4j syntax. Also try indvidual 10.1.3 names.
Please let me know how things work out for you...I would like to follow up on this...
Thanks,
Deepak

• [Upgrading to 2.1.0.63.73] JDK 1.6 and Oracle 10 server XP 32 issue

Hi,
I wonder if I will still be able to use Oracle 10 server if I install JDK 1.6 (mandatory to upgrade SqlDeveloper) ?
Here is the output of java -version in the Oracle server directory
D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\jdk\bin>java -version
java version "1.4.2_08"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_08-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_08-b03, mixed mode)
And in the Sqldeveloper directory
D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\sqldeveloper\jdk\jre\bin>java -version
java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-b05, mixed mode)
Is it sure to trust the install to place java 1.6 in the sqldeveloper\jdk\bin directory?
Many thanks if you can help

If you're worried about messing up other software, why not download the SQL Developer bundled with the JDK? It resides inside the SQLDeveloper folder and to my knowledge it won't interfere with any of your other JDK installs.
You'll want to put newer installs of SQL Developer in their own folder, and not in the existing SQL Developer Folder.

• Down Time for Installing APEX 4.2.1 and oracle HTTP server?

Hi, all:
I plan to install APEX 4.2.1 and oracle HTTP server on 10.2.0.4 database.
Is there any down time required during installation?
I mean during installation, do I need to block users from accessing the database?
Can they do their normal data entry / inquiry?
thanks,
John
ps. There will be server backup before installation.

Hi,
Documentation says
>
3.1 Recommended Pre-installation Tasks
Before installing Oracle Application Express, Oracle recommends that you complete the following steps:
Review and satisfy all Oracle Application Express installation requirements. See "Oracle Application Express Installation Requirements".
Shut down with normal or immediate priority the Oracle Database instances where you plan to install Oracle Application Express. On Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) systems, shut down all instances on each node.
An alternative to shutting down the database is to prevent all users from accessing Oracle Application Express when upgrading your installation from a previous release of Oracle Application Express. Oracle only recommends this option in high availability production environments where planned outages are not available. For all other scenarios, the database should be shut down.
To disable access to Oracle Application Express when the existing installation is using the Application Express Listener, shut down the appropriate application server where the Application Express listener is deployed.
To disable user access to Oracle Application Express when the existing installation is using the Oracle HTTP Server with mod_plsql, you should either shut down the Web server or disable the Application Express Database Access Descriptor of the Web server.
For an existing installation using the embedded PL/SQL gateway, you should disable the Oracle XML DB Protocol Server by setting the HTTP port to 0. This can be accomplished by starting SQL*Plus, connecting as SYS to the database where Oracle Application Express is installed, and running:
EXEC DBMS_XDB.SETHTTPPORT(0);
Once you have prevented access from Oracle Application Express users, you should log into SQL*Plus as SYS, connecting to the database where Oracle Application Express is installed, and query V$SESSION to ensure there are no long running sessions which would interfere with the upgrade process.
Back up the Oracle Database installation.
Oracle recommends that you create a backup of the current Oracle Database installation before you install Oracle Application Express. You can use Oracle Database Recovery Manager, which is included in the Oracle Database installation, to perform the backup.
See Also:
Oracle Database Backup and Recovery User's Guide
Start the Oracle Database instance that contains the target database.
After backing up the system, you must start the Oracle instance that contains the target Oracle database. Do not start other processes such as a Web Listener. However, if you are performing a remote installation, make sure the database listener for the remote database has started.

• Oracle VM Server for SPARC - network multipathing architecture question

This is a general architecture question about how to best setup network multipathing
I am reading the "Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.2 Administration Guide" but I can't find what I am looking for.
From reading the document is appears it is possible to:
(a) Configure IPMP in the Service Domain (pg. 155)
- This protects against link level failure but won't protect against the failure of an entire Service LDOM?
(b) Configure IPMP in the Guest Domain (pg. 154)
- This will protect against Service LDOM failure but moves the complexity to the Guest Domain
- This means the there are two (2) VNICs in the guest though?
In AIX, "Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA) Failover" it presents a single NIC to the guest but can tolerate failure of a single VIOS (~Service LDOM) as well as link level failure in each VIO Server.
https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/blogs/aixpert/entry/shared_ethernet_adapter_sea_failover_with_load_balancing198?lang=en
Is there not a way to do something similar in Oracle VM Server for SPARC that provides the following:
(1) Two (2) Service Domains
(2) Network Redundancy within the Service Domain
(3) Service Domain Redundancy
(4) Simplify the Guest Domain (ie single virtual NIC) with no IPMP in the Guest
Virtual Disk Multipathing appears to work as one would expect (at least according the the documentation, pg. 120). I don't need to setup mpxio in the guest. So I'm not sure why I would need to setup IPMP in the guest.

Hi,
there's link-based and probe-based IPMP. We use link-based IPMP (in the primary domain and in the guest LDOMs).
For the guest LDOMs you have to set the phys-state linkprop on the vnets if you want to use link-based IPMP:
ldm set-vnet linkprop=phys-state vnetX ldom-name
If you want to use IPMP with vsw interfaces in the primary domain, you have to set the phys-state linkprop in the vswitch:
ldm set-vswitch linkprop=phys-state net-dev=<phys_iface_e.g._igb0> <vswitch-name>
Bye,
Alexander.

• Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Oracle 7 Client with Oracle 9 Server

Hello,
I was wondering what are the advanatges of using Oracle 7 client with Oracle 9 Server versus using Oracle 9 Client with Oracle 9 server.

Some years ago I used 7.3 Client with 9i DB, and I don't remember of particular problems, but I'm speaking of Sql*Plus only. Are there specific problems ?
Of course the best thing is to install one 9i Client (did you already do it ?) : if there are same problems, then that's not compatibility issue.
And what are advantages of using 9 Client with 9 server other than 7 is no longer supported.You're sure you won't have compatibility problems.
