Coercion dot and strict type definition

Hello,
I seem t be having some problems learning how to use strict type defined controls, would someone please help?
Will you please tell me why the coercion dot is on the subVI's?
Will you please tell me how to link the  'CtlsToWLp Cluster' from Main.vi and the 'Clust Refnum' from the WLp2.vi to the same .ctl?
Thanks,

    Hi Z,
    If you use strict type defintion references you can use Call by reference Node. Depending on the connector pane for the subvi which is referenced you just wire your data to the corresponding terminals. I attach an easy example which dynamically opens and writes to an arbitary number of a template.

  • Determine if a control reference is a strict type definition

    If a VI is passed a control reference it can determine the VI Server Class using the ClassName property but how can it determine if the control reference is from a control which is based on a strict type definition?

    That a pretty neat little VI you've found, Darren. Kudos!
    The solution that Darren presents, however, will not tell the difference between a typedef and a strict typedef (unless I'm missing something). If you have VI Scripting enabled (see attachment for where to enable this in the Options menu), you can expose the Is Typedef? property.
    This returns an enum with the following values (as pictured)
    not a typedef
    typedef
    strict typedef
    class private data
    Although this property is not settable in a VI at run-time, it should be readable.
    Below is a picture of the Options menu where you can enable VI scripting

  • How can I change the numeric and enum default values in a Strict Type Def Cluster?

    I have a Strict Type Def cluster that contains 10 Numerical controls and a number of enums.  I have edited default values of the numerical controls in the Strict Type Def, in customize mode, performed a "Make Current Values Default"  and have done a "Apply Changes"  and saved.
    This cluster is used in various locations throughout the project and have not found a way to make the cluster default values change downstream.  The Strict Type Def (STD) Control appears to have the right values on the front panel.  But if I place an instance of this on a blank front panel, and run a wire from it in the block diagram with a probe and indicator, I still get the old default values being passed from the STD.

  • Setting control to default value when it is a strict type def

    If my subVI has a control that happens to be a strict type defined cluster and I have saved the values in the control as the default values, how can I change them back to the default values of the type def (which are empty).  Because it is a strict type definition, i cannot click on the elements inside the cluster and modify them (e.g. click on an array inside the cluster and do an empty array operation.)
    In the attached screenshot, the control "BLE Meters To Test" is just an array of clusters and I was able to empty the array.  The control "Capture Data" is a strict type def.  I would like to clear the contents of this control without having to delete the control and add it back with a new instance of the same strict type def.

    are you talking about edit mode or run mode?
    You could temporarily add a second instance of the typedef (all empty), then change it to a constant. Whenver you need to reset at run time, write the new digram constant to a local variable of the control.

    Make sure to click on the array container, not on the array elements.

  • How can I modify the "Type definitions" of "Function Prototype" if I want build a DLL in Labview 8.5.1.?

    Hello,
    We have a library with several VIs (API - Interfaces to our Real Time Target). This VIs we provide to our customer to generate own VIs to control the Real Time Target.
    Now we want to provide the functionality of this VI-library as DLL to our customer. The problem is, that labview use self definite name of type definitions. Also if I use "strict Type definition".
    Example:
    void GetOutputValues(VARIANT *Scale_In, int32_t ModelNr, uint16_t SignalID[], TD1 *errorIn, VARIANT *Scale_Out, TD2 *Data, TD1 *errorOut, int32_t len)
    It is possible to modify "TD1" and "TD2"? I want to give useful names.
    Greetings
    Steffen

    Hi Steffen,
          Try editing the .h file as follows:
    CHANGE FROM:
    typedef struct {
     LVBoolean status;
     long code;
     LStrHandle source;
     } TD1;
    CHANGE TO:
    typedef struct {
     LVBoolean status;
     long code;
     LStrHandle source;
     } TD1;
    typedef struct {
     LVBoolean status;
     long code;
     LStrHandle source;
     } LVErrorCluster;
    then your GetOutputValues prototype becomes:
    void GetOutputValues(VARIANT *Scale_In, int32_t ModelNr, uint16_t SignalID[], LVErrorCluster *errorIn, VARIANT *Scale_Out, TD2 *Data, LVErrorCluster *errorOut, int32_t len)
    If your source-code doesn't refer to "TD1", then you probably won't need to keep the TD1 prototype!
    Cheers.

  • The same type and red coercion dot

    Hi!
    A small project is attached to show how red coercion dot appears if you remove"lib type definition.ctl" from library to a virtual folder. It is interesting that this affects only class property nodes. It does not affect class accessors ("setters") and indicators. The same happens if you move "type definition.ctl" from virtual folder to the library.
    Picture shows changes in "vi in library.vi" block diagram.
    The application works but a peaceful bad feeling remains ...
    There are discussions on this NI forum about typdef controls. It seems that using type definitions can cause serious problems if used together with property nodes. What would be suggested in these cases?

    I can't unfortunately look at your code right now, but there are a couple points to be made:
    I'm not sure the problem you show is a bug. Moving the control file out of the library and into a virtual folder in the project changes the type definition because it has a different name.
    LV does at times show spurious coersion dots, but I have never seen it cause a functional problem - let alone a serious one.

  • Coercion dots, Typedef. and Property Nodes

    Hi,
    following problem:
    1. I place a simple Control (Button 1) and connect it to an Indicator (Indicator 1) -> OK
    2. I place a Button as Typedef. (Button 2) and connect it to an Indicator (Indicator 2) -> Coercion dot on Indicator 2 (I don't see the point of a boolean coercion, but OK)
    3. I create a property node for Indicator 1 (Value) and try to connect a constant (right-click>Create>Constant -> the constant is grayed out and the error message is 'type definition not found or contains error'
    Details: The master copy for this type definition could not be found or the master copy has errors. You must find and fix the master copy, or right-click this type definition and select Disconnect.
    4. I remove Button 2 and repeat step 3 -> the same thing happens
    If I connect an existing boolean constant to the property node there is a coercion dot. As a matter of fact for using one Typedef. Control in a VI all other control property nodes suddenly have coercion dots even if I remove the Typedef. control. Does it mean either all controls and indicators better are typedef. or none at all?
    Thanks in advance.
    P.S.: the problem occurred originally in a VI with much more than two buttons...

  • Can strictly type refnum control do type coercion?

    Hi all,
    Can strictly type refnum control do type coercion? NI says yes:
    A control refnum terminal that is strictly typed can only accept control references that are strictly typed to a compatible type. For example, if a subVI expects a control refnum of type Slide(Int32), you can wire a control reference of type Slide(Int32), Slide(Int8), or Slide(DBL), but not of type Slide(Cluster of DBLs). Wiring in the Slide(Int8) or Slide(DBL) will result in type coercion (no error) and thus a coercion dot as these representations are being coerced to Int32. Wiring the Slide(Cluster of DBLs) will result in a type conflict (error) and thus a broken wire. This is because the Int8 and DBL are numerics like the Int32 and can thus be coerced to be of Int32 representation. The Cluster of DBLs however, is not a numeric, but a totally different data type. Therefore, a cluster being of different data type than the numeric will result in a type conflict if wired together. Strictly typed references are most beneficial when you know exactly what type of data you will be using.
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3159
    I have seen this help file for long time, and been confused by it for long time. I don't think strictly type refnum control can do type coercion. If I put a U8 Enum refnum control on subvi's front panel, I can't connect it with a U16 Enum refnum control.
    I don't know if I am right.

    What is an "enum refum control"? Can you attach a small VI containing the various controls?
    steady wrote:
    Besides, I don't know what Slide(Cluster of DBLs) is. I can't generate such data type.
    A slide control with multiple sliders is a cluster datatype. One cluster element per slider.
    Just place a slide, right-click it...add slider. Voila!

  • Why this coercion dot on array indicator from strict typedef?

    Why is there a coercion dot on the second control?
    I created a trivial 3 element array of doubles, and created an indicator by right clicking on it in the block diagram. That's the "CreateIndicator" control.
    Then I did the same thing to create a second indicator on the same output wire, and from the front panel selected it and customized it to a strict typedef, saved, and applied changes. That's the "CreateIndicatorThenCustomize" control. It has a coercion dot on it, though. Why?
    Thanks to anybody who can shed some light on this for me!

    Seems weird that this would be considered a coercion. Why do they do it this way?
    Q1)
    What is the falicy? Is it that you should avoid coercion dots because they force copies, and yet in this case there is no copying involved so the avoidance advice is incorrect?
    Q2)
    Also, different question, why is Customize Control grayed out in the front panel Edit menu, as long as another control customization panel remains open from the previous use?
    Q3)
    Finally, how did I miss this after all this time? Well, you probably don't know how I missed it. Actually, if you do know, it might be better to leave it unsaid anyway....
    Q1 Correct!
    Q2 Not being NI R&D I can only speculate that is was an expediant move to shut-down that functionality. It used to be possible to customize part of a control while customizing a control back in about LV 6. They shut it down making it more painful to do the edits within edits (you can save a control in one edit and then use "replace" to select it while editing the first)
    Q3 I will leave taht question as an exercise for the reader.

  • Definitions of record and table type

    I’m confused with the definition of record and table type. Below is my understanding, Please correct me if anything wrong. Thanks in advance!
    Record type can only hold one record with multiple fields.
    Table type is an array (multiple records) with only one field
    Table type defined with %rowtype (table of records) is an array of multiple records with multiple fields.

    I am not sure that I understand what you are asking. I have not heard the term table type before.
    However, I think a record type is more closely aligned to the %rowtype declaration. Maybe a collection is what you are looking for with the term table type.
    From the Oracle 10g documentation:
    %ROWTYPE
    In PL/SQL, records are used to group data. A record consists of a number of related fields in which data values can be stored. The %ROWTYPE attribute provides a record type that represents a row in a table. The record can store an entire row of data selected from the table or fetched from a cursor or cursor variable.
    Columns in a row and corresponding fields in a record have the same names and datatypes. In the example below, you declare a record named dept_rec. Its fields have the same names and datatypes as the columns in the dept table.
    DECLARE
    dept_rec dept%ROWTYPE; -- declare record variable

  • Type definition and reference

    Hello,
    when I look at the "Usage" column in the Types view, am I right to assume that the first location given for a type is where the type is defined, all others where it is referenced?
    Example:
    Name                 Type                           Version    Usage
    OMS_StdQueueInput    Container, Type Definition     0.0.0.4    OMS_Types.ini; OMS_LocalTypes.ini; OMSStart.seq    No comment
    So here I would assume, that the type OMS_StdQueueInput is defined in OMS_Types.ini and used/referenced in OMS_LocalTypes.ini and OMSStart.seq. Is that correct?

    By INI file do you mean a TestStand Type Palette File?
    A new feature was added to TestStand (in 4.1 I think so you should have it) that allows you to control when automatic conflict resolution (choosing the highest version of  a type silently) occurs. The setting is located on the File tab of the Station Options dialog and is called "Allow Automatic Type Conflict Resolution". In general, I recommend changing it to the slightly more restrictive setting of "Only If a Type Palette File has the Higher Version" because this will get rid of the possibility of automatic conflict resolution when opening two sequence files with different versions of a type when the type does not exist in a type palette file. But if your type will always be in a type palette file then the default setting is fine.
    First, some background information.
    Automatic Type Conflict Resolution - This occurs when a file is opened whose type is different from the version already loaded into memory, and the criteria for automatic resolution is met (i.e. the station option setting allows it, neither verison of the type is marked as modified, and the different versions of the type have different version numbers). When automatic resolution occurs TestStand automatically chooses the version of the type with the highest version number.
    Let me know if you want me to explain other terms.
    What I'd recommend for type management:
    1) Create a type palette file for your standard types. Make sure all deployed and development systems are using/loading this type palette file. If you need more details on how to do this please let us know.
    2) Control updates to these types using a source code control system to control updating of the type palette file(s). Ideally, only one person should be editing a type palette file at a time. Source code control systems can be used to enforce this.
    3) Let your developers know that they should only edit types in the type palette files and not in individual sequence files.
    4) Try to make all changes to your types and substep code backwards compatible so that old sequences will continue to work with newer versions of the types. If you have to break backwards compatibility, consider creating a new type instead and use the new type from now on, but leave the old type there for backwards compatibility (you can use flags to hide the old version of the types from the insert menu if needed).
    If you use a type palette file in this way I think you will get something close to what you are asking for. With the default setting for "Allow Automatic Type Conflict Resolution", if all of your TestStand systems are loading your standard type palette files then you will either get the version in the type palette file or your will get a type conflict dialog if the version in the sequence file is newer. There will be no possibility of silently using a version other than the one in the type palette file. Is this sufficient for your needs or are you looking for something different. If you are looking for something different please let us know the specific behavior you require.
    Hope this helps,
    -Doug

  • How to change the font color in a strict type def programatically

    Could someone suggest a way to change the font color of a string indicator in a strict type def cluster programmatically? The cluster contains a label that is color-coded to match the function of the data channel represented by that cluster.  The function of each channel is not predetermined, so the font color needs to be changed programmatically.  To represent all channels, I have arranged a large cluster that contains 100 instances of the control.  This makes it essential that the control be strictly type defined in order to change the layout of the clusters uniformly.
    Can anyone suggest either a method by which I can let the control remain a strict type def and change the font color, or a method by which I can programmatically change the control from a strict type def to a type def?  Currently, I am saving the control as a strict type def every time I make a change and then saving it again as a type def when I am ready to run the program.  This works fine, but just seems inelegant.  This color-coding is used throughout the program in various indicators, so a neat solution would be greatly appreciated.

    As mentioned in my Nugget on Type definitions you can create strict type-defs that contain type-defs.
    If you make your data definition a type and put that definition in a strict type-def (one of each flavor) you can use the appropraite strict type where each is required.
    Yes the data structure will have another level of nesting so if you are "too far gone" you may not like this idea.
    Otherwise you can write a VI that opens the typed-def and do a "save as..." and use it everytime you edit the type-def.
    I hope something helps!

    Hi,
    Can someone please tell me how to delete an item type definition from database (including the history of it)? Is there a script?

    Oracle Workflow provides a script to delete the item type definition including its history. It completely wipes out the workflow without even a trace of it. Please note that this script is STRICTLY NOT ALLOWED ON PRODUCTION whatsoever without approval from Oracle Support.
    Please find the script $FND_TOP/sql/wfrmitt.sql in Oracle Apps and $ORACLE_HOME/wf/admin/sql/wfrmitt.sql in Oracle Workflow Standalone.
    Once again, this script wipes off the workflow without a trace and you should not use this in PROD.
