Comparing time strings?

If I have two string variables both of whom contain time readouts, for example:
String t1 = "12:10:04";
String t2 = "12:10:24":
Can they be converted to time objects so they can be compared, i.e. t2-t1 = 00:00:20?

See java.text.SimpleDateFormat and java.util.Date.
Parse your strings into Dates, subtract one Date's millis from the other, create a new Date, and format that as you wish.

  • How to compare Date/time string

    I read from datalog file including Date/time string ,and want to query the special Date/time string span ,how to compare the data/time string ?

    Hello Joshua,
    To compare date/time you have to extract the different components (day, month, year, hour, minute, second) anyway. Why not "convert to seconds"? I think it's easier to compare one number (where you also can do other math, like calc the difference and so on) than to compare seven (?) parameters with some exceptions... If the dates are read from excel (there was a similar thread some days ago), why not convert to seconds in excel (just a format change)?

  • Compare two strings in an array

    Hello!
    Please feel free to give me hints, but do not give me any code.
    Ok, here is what I am trying to do, I whant to compare my input string whith strings allready stored in the array. If my input string equals any of the allready excisting strings, a error wil show upp, otherwise store the new string in next avalibal position. I do not seem to get the method right for comparing the strings. here is the method I have written so far, please take a look and give me a hint, but no code. :)
    //Check if a user already excists
    public void compareNames (People in_array [], String in_name) {
              for (int i=0; i<value.peopleCount; i++) {
                   if (in_name.equals(in_array.getPeople())) {
                   System.out.print("The user already excist, please chose another name");
    }value.peopleCount is an global count value for people arays.
    getPeople get the name from the people class.

    A couple notes here.
    The name compareNames() is misleading if it is going to do what you described. A comparison will generally not have side-effects like outputting error messages to the console or adding new items to an array. It would be better if you called the method addIfNew(), and returned a boolean indicating whether the name was new or not. The caller would then be responsible for displaying an error message if the method returned false.
    I also suggest you use a List such as ArrayList instead of an array, otherwise you will have to resize and copy your array every time you add something to it that exceeds the array size, and will allow you to do away with the global peopleCount.

  • Compare two strings in a formula

    Hi,
    I'd like to know if there's a way to compare two strings in a formula ?
    I have this consition:
    IF(@SUBSTRING(@NAME(@CURRMBR(TIME_FROM)),5)==@NAME(@CURRMBR(TIME)))
    But the == operator can only compare two data.
    Thanks,
    Cyril

    Hi,
    thank you both for your answers.
    When I figured that the == operator was for data only, I didn't even try to compare member names.
    I finally used the solution that Cameron suggested in another conversation. I created a date measure, and loaded some data since the beginning of my time to the end.
    It starts in 1974 (annually), then becomes monthly data, and then daily data from 2009, so it's not so many blocks to br created. In the end I have the same value for "from 2008"/"from Apr 30", and I can easily compare my dates.
    Note that I could have also used the @TODATE function, which turns a date into a number, but the format of date is limited and doesn't fit the format of my member names, so I got lasy... and I'm not sure my users would have apreciated that ;)
    Thanks, this post is solved.

  • Time string to time stamp

    Hi Everyone ,
    I have two time strings :
    05-06-2009 > 02:00-03:00
    13-06-2009 > 05:00-06:00
    I want to convert them into timestamp and then i want to compare them to know which one is older.
     If its possible without converting to timestamp then that would be good too but I guess the best way would be to convert the string to timestamp first.

    Hi,
    Based on your code, I see your code related to
    iTextSharp Pdf.
    iText is a third party library to create PDF originally written for java. iTextSharp is
    the C# adaptation of that library.
    Question regarding iText are better asked on the iText forum, rather than the Microsoft Forum:

  • How to compare two strings whether both are equal while ignoring the difference in special characters (example: & vs & and many others)?

    I attempted to compare two strings whether they are equal or not. They should return true if both are equal.
    One string is based on Taxonomy's Term (i.e. Term.Name) whereas other string is based on String object.
    The problem is that both strings which seem equal return false instead of true. Both string values have different special characters though their special characters are & and &
    Snapshot of different design & same symbols:
    Is it due to different culture or language?
    How to compare two strings whether both are equal while ignoring the difference in special characters (& vs &)?

    Hi Jerioon,
    If you have a list of possible ambiguous characters the job is going to be easy and if (& vs &) are the only charracters in concern awesome.
    You can use the below solution.
    Before comparing pass the variables through a replace function to standarize the char set.
    $Var = Replace($Var,"&","&")
    This is going to make sure you don't end up with ambiguous characters failing the comparison and all the char are "&" in this case.
    Similar technique is used to ignore Character Cases 'a' vs. 'A'

  • Comparing time including AM and PM

    Hi,
    In my project, if a customer calls an agent,his time matches with the server time.If the calling time is between 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM the welcome message will be played.If the calling time is between 6.00 PM to 9.00 Am,the message agents logged off should be played.I tried the following.
    import java.util.*;
    import java.lang.Object;
    import java.text.Collator;
    public class CurrentTime{
      public static void main(String[] args){
        Calendar calendar = new GregorianCalendar();
        String am_pm;
        int hour = calendar.get(Calendar.HOUR);
        int minute = calendar.get(Calendar.MINUTE);
      //  int second = calendar.get(Calendar.SECOND);
        if(calendar.get(Calendar.AM_PM) == 0)
          am_pm = "AM";
        else
          am_pm = "PM";
      String time= "Current Time : " + hour + ":" + minute + " " + am_pm;
        System.out.println(time);
        Collator myCollator = Collator.getInstance();
          if(( myCollator.compare(time, "9.00 AM") > 0 ) && (myCollator.compare(time, "6.00 PM") < 0))
                    System.out.println("welcome");
    }Here i have checked whether my time 11.49 AM > 9.00 AM and 11.49 AM < 6.00 PM.But nothing is displayed.because it is not taking the AM and PM.It is just comparing 11.49 < 6.00.How can i compare the AM and PM?please help me to solve this.
    Thanks

    myCollator.compare(time, "9.00 AM")Doesn't a Collator compare strings? "11.49 AM" < "9.00 AM" because "1" < "9". Calendars implement Comparable so compare them instead. Or use before() and after().

  • How to get Sum for my Elapse Time string for my group

    Hi,
    How can I get the sum of an elapse time string in my group footer 2 and group footer 1 from the report screenshot attached.
    I have a report that display TimeIn and TimeOut of an employee.
    For the total time I have created a formula that will take my time in seconds and displaying it in hrs, minutes and seconds.
    How can I get the sum of all the total time per day and display this in my group footer 2.
    As well I will need to add the grand total to group footer 1 for the total of days.
    The formula I have for the total time is as follow:
    WhileReadingRecords;
    NumberVar TotalSec :=  {TimeLogs.TotalTime};
    NumberVar Hours   := Truncate  (Remainder ( TotalSec , 86400) / 3600) ;
    NumberVar Minutes := Truncate  (Remainder ( TotalSec , 3600) / 60) ;
    NumberVar Seconds := Remainder (TotalSec , 60) ;
    Totext ( Hours ,   '00' ) +  ':' +
    Totext ( Minutes , '00' ) +  ':' +
    Totext ( Seconds , '00' )
    This is a seperate question below but related as well to this report.
    Another question I have is how can I round up for example 03:30:58 to 03:31:00
    And also how can I round down for example 03:26:10 to 03:26:00
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Joe

    Hi Jamie,
    Well I ran into an issue with this. My Daily Total, there is no issue, it is displaying the proper time. But when I add a summary to my Group Footer 1, it doesn't add up properly.
    If I select only 1, 2, or 3 days my Date Range Total is adding fine but when selecting 5 days for example, as you can see from the picture below, for an unknowned reason the total of hrs is wrong.
    Do you know why this is happening.
    Than you for your help.
    Joe
    Picture below, this is working fine?
