Compiler API  and Tomcat

Hi!
I am using the new compiler api to compile dynamically generated classes.
To get the compiler tool i call:
JavaCompiler compilerTool = ToolProvider.getSystemJavaCompiler(); when I run this from eclipse with the integrated tomcat everyhing works fine but if I deploy the application on the external tomcat i get a null pointer exception because getSystemJavaCompiler(); always returns null.
Somebody got an idea why?

sigh, NEVER put ANYTHING in the jre/lib/ext directory.
It's a bad thing that it's even there, as it causes systems to become mutually incompatible and to behave unpredictably when different versions of classes are needed/present.
The compiler API (and others) that depend on the local filesystem are disallowed by application servers for security reasons.
You've just given access to every cracker in the world to your system by allowing them to compile and run code on your machine with root privileges. Your boss will thank you.

  • Why do I need to restart Apache and Tomcat every time a java file is change

    If a java file is changed and complied the changes are not reflected if Tomcat is not restarted.
    The settings in server.xml are as:
    <!-- Tomcat Manager Context -->
    <Context path="/manager" docBase="manager" debug="0" privileged="true"/>
         <Context path="/cf" docBase="cf" debug="0" reloadable="false"/>
    Here "cf" is my Application folder under webapps. The reloadable property when set to "true" for standalone Tomcat on Windows98 reflects the changes for compiled java files without restarting Tomcat. But on Linux 7.1 with Apache 1.3.19 and Tomcat 4.0.3 this is not working.
    Also tried out with Manager Application of tomcat-users.xml with reloadable="false" as well as reloadable="true",
    But when I reload the application using the command
    http://servername:8080/manager/reload?path=/appli.name
    It tells me that the application is reloaded but changes in the java file are still not reflected.
    Also when reloaded through Manager Servlet, Only my load-on-startup servlet is reloaded, but other java classes are not.
    Is it neccessary to execute this reload command from the server itself. I m executing it from a remote m/c. and have mapped the application with a domain name virtually.
    Is it the case with Tomcat on Linux with Apache. Or is something going wrong on my part.
    Can someone Help out plz.
    Regards,
    Rupali

    or you can "touch" your web.xml file.
    touch web.xmlor that command is for *nix systems, not sure what the Windows command is.  But basically, when you edit the web.xml, even if it means updating the last modified time, it will restart only your application and you should see the changes.

  • Eclipse and Tomcat questions

    Hi everyone,
    Lastnight I setup Eclipse to work with Tomcat, which works very good, but there are something I don't understand.
    1. My files are put in my workspace in (C:\Documents and Settings\...etc)
    How does Tomcat (which is installed in C:\Tomcat) know that it should get the files from my workspace directory?
    Because in the C:\Tomcat directory I can't find any .XML file that refers to my workspace directory.
    2. How I developed my servlets till now, I had some other free editor, I needed to compile my servlets then restart Tomcat and then test it.
    With Eclipse + Tomcat plugin, all I need to do save the servlet and apparently the source code is compiled automatically. All I need to do is refresh the servlet in my browsers (very handy and easy to develop like this). But my question is, does Eclipse compile the servlet automatically after saving? And why doesn't tomcat have to be restarted?
    Just a few questions to understand it a bit better, I'm really happy with this setup as it makes everything a lot easier.
    Regards,
    Steven.

    I believe you will need to become familiar with and install:

  • Jsp import package error after upgrading to jdk1.4.2_08 and tomcat 5.0

    I am trying to upgrade the jdk and tomcat from 1.3/3.3 to 1.4/5.0.
    My jsp imports worked fine prior to the upgrade, but now I get the following:
    Jun 6, 2005 10:01:17 AM org.apache.jasper.compiler.Compiler generateClass

    The package in the import statement "import com.adware.print.database.inquire.*" actually has no classes in it. The classes are contained in "import com.adware.print.database.inquire.controller.*". If I change the import statement everything works. The problem is that I have 100s of jsps. If there is a work-around outside of changing the import statements, that would be best.
    Can anyone help? Thanks.

    do you know what url is being looked up? the message is complaining that the url is starting with the string "an]", which seems pretty bogus.

  • Servlets and Tomcat/Apache

    Okay,
    Tomcat 4.1 running with Apache.
    Installed mod_jk, piece of cake.
    JSPs run through Apache like a dream.
    Tomcat examples ( jsp and servlets) run through Apache perfectly ( that is no :8080 business).
    My JSP's run through Apache no problem. Works great.
    My SERVLETS WILL NOT RUN THROUGH APACHE FOR ANYTHING.
    My context looks like this in server.xml:
    <Context path="/nuweb" docBase="/home/shared/nuweb" debug="0"
    reloadable="true" crossContext="true">
    <Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.FileLogger"
    prefix="nuweb" suffix=".log"
    timestamp="true"/>
    </Context>
    Note: that I am not under <TOMCAT_HOME>/webapps.
    The reason is that I will, in production not be the Unix admin on the server. I will only have priviledges within my directory. I will not be able to drop war files in the webapps directory. I will not be able
    to start and stop tomcat or apache ( there are 100 diffrent apache contexts on that machine and someday many of them will be going through tomcat for jsp and servlet support).
    My servlets will only run if I put :8080/nuweb/servlet/HelloServlet in the URL. Take off the 8080 and I get Page not found. Not the tomcat 404 page, the Browswer 404 errror.
    Here is my web.xml which lives in the WEB-INF directory of of /home/shared/nuweb
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE web-app
    PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN"
    "http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd">

    <servlet-class>org.nu.servlet.HelloServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>HelloServlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/hello</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>invoker</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/servlet/*</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    </web-app>
    In devlopment I am on a system that is very close to what the production server will look like ( Tomcat 4.1 same version of Apache, same Unix ). In development I can restart all the servers edit server.xml etc. On the production I would have to schedule that stuff. I want to be able to compile classes and drop them in the WEB-INF/classes... directory and have them run. Is that too much to ask?

    Hi,
    I am also facing same error.
    I am not able to view my servlets via apache web server.
    ie when i do "http://localhost/enlighta/logon"
    I get http 404 page not found error
    but when I do http://localhost:8080/enlighta/logon
    all works fine
    I am using apache 2 and tomcat 4.5
    This is I have done:
    1.I have http server running on port 80
    2. appserver on port 8080
    3. I have a war file enlighta.war deployed on webserevr
    4. The static content like images and html page I have moved to webserver
    5. The servlet context of the app on the app server is /enlighta
    6. In the web.xml I have defined all the servlet maping.
    the port 8009 has the connecter is running/listening.
    the configuration
    sever.xml on tomcat
    <!-- Define an AJP 1.3 Connector on port 8009 -->

    worker.ajp13.port=8009
    Now I feel I am doing something wrong on defining virtual host.
    Or may be something else is wrong.
    I have gone thru the previous thread but I dont have mod_jk.conf file.
    Please help!!!

  • JAXM 1.1.2 and Tomcat 4.1.29

    Dear all,
    After fiddling with the configs of JAXM and Tomcat, (besides searching the mail archives), I still can't figure how to make them work together.
    I copied dom4j.jar, jaxm-api.jar and jaxm-runtime.jar to $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib. Then I copied jaxm-provider.war and jaxm-provideradmin.war to $CATALINA_HOME/webapps.
    I can access http://localhost/jaxm-provideradmin. However, when I clicked on "Profiles" on the left frame, I got the error message below. So I thought, may be I need to copy saaj-impl.jar and saaj-api.jar to $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib. This time I got different error message. (See below)
    I have also tried to include the CLASSPATH specified in catalina.sh of jwsdp-1.3. However, still no luck.
    For your info, I am doing all these on HP-UX 11.00, running JDK 1.3.1.
    Any pointer would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Dear all,
    Problem solved. Once I upgraded to JDK 1.4.2, the problem seems to go away.

  • How to integrate third party API and DLL

    Dear sir/Madam
    How can i integrate the third party high level API and DLL into my DLL, project keeping in view that all their functions and their definitions kept hidden. i have tried it but when importing the functions in the DLL and export the high level functions, compiler demands their declarations and prototypes.
    Is their a way to hide all these high level functions and still utilize them.
    thanks, regards
    Zafar

    Hi Matrix39,
    The compiler will still need the proper prototypes for the functions called in the third party DLL to compile your DLL whether you are using explicit or implicit linking to call the functions.  Declaring these prototypes in your DLL does not mean they will be exported by your DLL.  The functions exported by your DLL can be configured by navigating to Build»Target Settings in CVI.  From here you can configure what functions your DLL exports by clicking the Change... button in the Export section.  There are several options for specifying the functions including using header files and manual export declarations.  See the CVI Help for more information.

  • How to Install and Configure Java and Tomcat

    Hi Everybody,
    I am using the following versions of java and tomcat:
    JAVA: j2sdk-1_4_2_13
    Tomcat: jakarta-tomcat-5.0.5
    I tried to configure several times both but everytime the result is the same. I am setting the following variables:
    PATH: .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\bin;D:\Tomcat 5.0\bin
    CLASSPATH: .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\lib;D:\Tomcat 5.0\common\lib\servlet-api.jar
    JAVA_HOME: D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13
    Please correct what mistake i am doing again and again. I appreciate your effort.
    Thanks in advance.
    Himanshu

    Fine sir, I will tell evrything in detail what steps i am following during installation and configuring java and Tomcat.
    1) I am using the following versions(exe) of java and tomcat:
    JAVA: j2sdk-1_4_2_13-windows-i586-p
    Tomcat: jakarta-tomcat-5.0.5
    2) Then, i follow exactly the same variable names and values to configure java as mentioned below to make java work under User variables header:
    PATH: .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\bin
    CLASSPATH: .;D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\lib
    JAVA_HOME: D:\j2sdk1.4.2_13
    Above steps i follow only for installing java. And it also not working properly. If i run my .java file from the destination of the file then it will be execulted but if i try to execute from any other location then it doesn't, it shows the following message in the DOS prompt:
    error: cannot read: Hello.java
    1 error
    Now, please correct what mistake i am doing.
    Thanks
    Himanshu

    The problem with submitting a bug report is I don't know how to replicate it.
    The java file showed up on the "Referenced Libraries". I removed it from there and it fixed the problem.
    If I return it to the classpath via Eclipse it doesn't demonstrate the problem.
    I don't know how it got into the classpath to cause this problem. I even tried editing the classpath (which I'm fairly certain was not how the problem was caused) but that didn't replicate the problem.
    I didn't check the .classpath to see what the entry was before I removed it via eclipse so I don't know what the entry looked like. The problem wasn't in the version is SVN so I don't know how to find what changes were made.
    If you sill want a bug report I can enter one but with out any instructions on how to replicate it.

  • Load the compiled class and deploy programmatically

    so, i am making a compiler,
    the compilation part is using java compiler api
    i want to ask, is there any api to run the generated class
    and is there any api to deploy it??
    or is it a must to use Runtime.getRuntime().exec ?
    thanks

    In outline it's pretty easy. The URLClassLoader can load classes from either .jar files and class directories. For dynamic class generation it's not worth using the .jar format, compile into a directory.
    Then you just need to create a URLClassLoader using a file: type URL poiting to the base class directory (packages are represented as nested directories inside.)
    File classDir = ......
    ClassLoader cl = new URLClassLoader(new URL[]{classDir.toURL()});
    Class loadedClass = cl.loadClass(className);Some complications:
    This will not load the dynamic class if there's a class with the same name and package on the class path.
    Having loaded a class, you need to know how to use it. Typically you create an instance with newInstance() and cast it to some interface that these classes are supposed to implement (and which is on the class path).

  • Simple setup problems with JSTL and Tomcat

    Hi all, I'm having some problems getting JSTL to work the 1st time. JSTL setup seems to be a common problem for relative newbies, but having read previous threads, I still haven't been able to solve my problem so hopefully someone can help:
    the jstl.jar and standard.jar are in my WEB-INF/lib directory, so I don't think it's a classpath problem.
    My jsp page has the following at the top:
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>Later, I reference a bean var with :
    <c:out value="My var is : ${var.property}"/>In my web.xml I have:
      <taglib>
       <taglib-uri>http://java.sun.com/jstl/core</taglib-uri>
       <taglib-location>/WEB-INF/lib/jstl.jar</taglib-location>
      </taglib>And I've placed the actual tld (c.tld) in the WEB-INF directory.
    On startup I get the error when compiling the JSP:
    No such tag out in the tag library imported with prefix c
    Can anyone help here?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

    I think this note from the JSTL mailing list by Shawn Bayern, one of the lead developers of Jakarta JSTL and the author of "JSTL In Action", will clarify it:
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg04587.html
    Don't put that <taglib> in your web.xml. All the books tell you to do it, but Shawn Bayern has the right answer. The URI should be the one that's in the TLD JAR .tld files.
    I use JSTL and Tomcat 4.1.24 without the <taglib>, and it works fine. - MOD

  • Flex Compiler API Issue: Error: unable to open './flex-config.xml'

    1) I make a java struts(or a servlet) to build swf file
    dynamically when receiving the request from client. The struts
    source code please see the attached code. deploy the structs to the
    Tomcat
    2) then copy the <Flex_SDK>/frameworks to the
    <tomcat_home>/webapps/dozhang/WEB-INF
    3) then copy the all the libraries under the
    <Flex_SDK>/lib to the
    <tomcat_home>/webapps/dozhang/WEB-INF/lib
    4) Copy a test a.mxml to c:\
    5) Start up Tomcat , access the structs, I will get the
    Error: unable to open './flex-config.xml' in the tomcat log.
    Can anyone tell me how to specify the location of the
    flex-config.xml ?

    Ok, I solved it by myself
    I need to add the following codes when calling the Compiler
    API
    Configuration conf = application.getDefaultConfiguration();
    conf.setToken("flexlib", "path to the frameworks")
    applicaiton.setConfiguration(conf);
    Then it solved the problem
