Compiler error: Missing JSP library?

Hi All,
I am really new at this, and I know that I'm making some sort of simple mistake.
I have an existing application running on a 9i middle tier. I want to make a couple of simple changes to a .JSP. So I downloaded the EAR file, loaded it into JDeveloper (10.1.3.0.4 SU4), made my changes and tried to run it locally. I got 241 compiler errors. So I reverted to the original EAR, and I still get 241 compiler errors.
The errors are:
Error(1,5): illegal forward reference
Error(1,14): duplicate definition of class _index
Error(1,48): HttpJsp not found in class _index
Error(1,62): method getPageContext(_index, javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest, javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse, null, boolean, int, boolean) not found in class javax.servlet.jsp.JspFactory
The code is:
<sample>
import oracle.jsp.runtime.*;
import javax.servlet.*;
import javax.servlet.http.*;
import javax.servlet.jsp.*;
public class _index extends oracle.jsp.runtime.HttpJsp {
public final String _globalsClassName = null;
public void _jspService(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws java.io.IOException, ServletException {
response.setContentType( "text/html;charset=windows-1252");
/* set up the intrinsic variables using the pageContext goober:
** session = HttpSession
** application = ServletContext
** out = JspWriter
** page = this
** config = ServletConfig
** all session/app beans declared in globals.jsa
PageContext pageContext = JspFactory.getDefaultFactory().getPageContext( this, request, response, null, true, JspWriter.DEFAULT_BUFFER, true);
// Note: this is not emitted if the session directive == false
HttpSession session = pageContext.getSession();
if (pageContext.getAttribute(OracleJspRuntime.JSP_REQUEST_REDIRECTED, PageContext.REQUEST_SCOPE) != null) {
pageContext.setAttribute(OracleJspRuntime.JSP_PAGE_DONTNOTIFY, "true", PageContext.PAGE_SCOPE);
JspFactory.getDefaultFactory().releasePageContext(pageContext);
return;
</sample>
So, I read the forums, etc and decided that I need ojsp.jar included in my project libraries. So I went to libraries under project properties, and I already have "Jsp Runtime" as my first library and it claims to include ojsp.jar. I've tried removing and re-adding the library, adding other libraries ("J2EE","Servlet Runtime","OC4J Deployment Plugin"...), and a dozen other things, none of which have allowed my to compile.
Any ideas on what I should do?
Steven

you might need to post more code, but basically the
compiler is complaining because you do not have a
return statement at the end of your method.
if you do not have a return statement (with a matching
return type) then the compiler will complain. If you
don't understand this then post the code to your
method and we can get it fixed.
public String[] read(InputStream list) throws
Exception {
String[] stringArray;
return stringArray;
The code is the most complex I have written so far but here is some of it. (the begining and the end)
public String[] read(InputStream list) throws Exception {
if (list != null) {
String[] stringArray = null;
try {
while {
//add strings to string array
}//end of while
return stringArray;
}// end try
catch{
}//end of method

  • Compile Error: missing return statement

    anyone knows why the following program yields compile error "missing return statement??"
    class LengthTest
         public int stringLength(String s)
         {     int len = s.length();
              if (len <= 5) return 5;
              else if (len <= 10) return 10;
              else if (len <= 20) return 20;
    //          else return 30;
    If I add "else return 30" statement, then it can stop the error. Any ideas??

    You might know that the string length will never be more than 20, but the compiler does not. So it forces you to supply a return statement that will be executed no matter what the string length is.

  • Java Adapter Compile Error - Missing Libraries

    I am trying to convert my project from being deployed on Flex Data Services 2 To LiveCycle Data Services. I dont know very much about java and have hit a snag when trying to recompile my custom java adaptor.
    It compiles fine under a FDS2 project, but when compiled under a LCDS deployment on JRun, Eclipse gives me the following error when trying to compile:
    Project PTSChat_Java is missing required library: lib/commons-codec.jar
    Project PTSChat_Java is missing required library: lib/commons-httpclient.jar
    The project cannot be built until build path errors are resolved
    It appears that the libraries have been renamed to commons-codec-1.3.jar & commons-httpclient-3.0.1.jar in LCDS, but I am not sure where to update these references? They are not direct library imports in my java code.
    As a shot in the dark, I tried just copying the old FDS2 libraries back over to the WEB-INF\lib\ DIR since there are named differently. It resolved the missing library error, but then I got a compile error with service cannot be resolved in references to my MessageService msgService = (MessageService) service; java code. I quickly realized this is not the correct path to head down.
    Does anyone have any clues what I may be doing wrong? Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    I resovled the problems I was having.
    I was able to figure out how to change the library linking in eclipse and switched the commons-codec-1.3.jar & commons-httpclient-3.0.1.jar in the place of commons-codec.jar & commons-httpclient.jar libraries previously used with the project (properties:libraries).
    I was not able to correct the service cannot be resolved. Everything I did kept crashing and dropping my connection tot he channel. I ended up just switching the code in my java adapter from:
    MessageService msgService = (MessageService) service
    to
    MessageBroker broker = MessageBroker.getMessageBroker(null);
    MessageService msgService = (MessageService) broker.getService("message-service");
    This appears to be working as desired for my use of the java adapter for the session management & logging. I am not really certain why the "service" became undefined between FDS2 & LCDS, something must have been depreciated or changed around.

  • How do I see javac compiler errors during JSP precompile?

              I played with all the options that "weblogic.jspc"
              supports. I couldn't get the javac compiler errors to
              show up when there is a problem with the generated
              Java file.
              Interestingly the same JSP when compiled automatically
              by the weblogic server, the javac errors show up in
              the output.
              Any tricks? or ideas?
              thanks

              In WL 5.1, earlier service packs would sometimes not show the errors. Get sp6 or later.

  • Odd Compiler Error in JSPs

    I found a really odd compiler problem today in my JSPs. When I tried to do a rebuild on my JSPs, all of them came up with the exact same error. Basicall it said that I could not have a -- within a comment. This error was reported on three lines and the editor showed three sections as having problems (using a squiggly yellow line). However, none of the pages had anything like what was mentioned on those lines.
    It turned out that the real problem was that the web.xml file had the error. I had put some '--' in a comment section and when the compiler parsed the web.xml file and found the problem, it failed to tag that file as the source but rather ended up showing the JP as being the source.
    Took a bit if time to figure that one out.

  • Linux-2.6.18-ARCH compile error: missing Makefile

    tried to compile custom kernel from provided sources and make generated following error:
    make bzImage
      CHK     include/linux/version.h
      CHK     include/linux/utsrelease.h
    scripts/Makefile.build:17: /usr/src/linux-2.6.18-ARCH/init/Makefile: No such file or directory
    make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/linux-2.6.18-ARCH/init/Makefile'.  Stop.
    make: *** [init] Error 2
    So I downloaded vanilla and this worked fine.
    I was wondering if make install script will use mainitcpio however this did not work either as install.sh script is looking at /dev/hda which is read-only installation device (cd/dvd)
    So I copied vmlinuz and system.map and generated img file manually.

    There are no "provided sources" in Arch. /usr/src/linux-<kernel_version> contains only those elements of the compiled kernel that are required to build against, so getting the source from kernel.org is the right thing to do.
    If you want to build a kernel package that uses mkinitcpio, like the official Arch kernels do, you need to create a PKGBUILD, or modify an existing one, and use ABS (Arch Build System). The wiki has all the details.

    SKole7,
    I don't rememer whether you've trashed your preferences yet.
    Try doing it first by holding down Command+Option+Shift as you launch Photoshop.
    If that doesn't work, try deleting ALL preferences files manually as per:http://www.adobe.com/go/kb405012
    If you get the application to launch succesfully, UNcheck all the Version Cue instances both in Bridge and in Photoshop:

  • JSP Compilation Error when using OC4J out of the box

    Hello.
    After installing Java jdk 1.5.0_05, setting ORACLE_HOME, setting JAVA_HOME, rebooting, and installing OC4J standalone straight out of the box, I have deployed a simple web project that consists of just one JSP. I receive the following error message:

    When installing Oc4j as a service using Javaservice opnesource, I had no problem, even using J.D.K 1.6:
    %JSEXE% -install %JSNAME% %JVMDIR%\jvm.dll -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -Djava.class.path=%OC4J_HOME%\oc4j.jar -start oracle.oc4j.loader.boot.BootStrap -params -config %OC4J_HOME%\config\server.xml -out %OC4J_HOME%\log\OC4J_service_stdout.log -err %OC4J_HOME%\log\OC4J_service_stderr.log -current %JSBINDIR% -auto -description OC4JService
    Then I wanted to install it using "ServiceMill" or "Javaservice Wrapper", becuase it has a better control on the process and I had that awfull compilation error.
    I guess it is because ServiceMills uses java.exe and javaservice the .dll to launch the oc4j, no idea.
    Anyway, thank you very much!!!!!

    ***************** END TOMCAT ERROR MESSAGE *********************

    Hi
    I am running my Tomcat apps (on a Windows dev machine) in an alternate location (ie. not default webapps). The same crap comes to me every time. Unable to install etc. I have tried every trick in the book regarding classpath settings etc.
    When I use 'javap' to check the classpath from any location on my machine, its works and javap returns the signature of my class.
    When I use it though Tomcat (with the import set to include the filename), it get the error. I have heard rumors that using JDK 1.3 in stead of 1.4 helps, but I just want it to work with 1.4 :)
    So if any of you can help me on this, please.
    PS. On my linux server it works just fine, as does every other thing on that machine ;)
