Compressing Flash Ad...

Hi Everyone,
I created a 15-second animated banner ad (300x250 Medium Rectangle) in After Effects CS6 @ 24fps.
It is a very simple ad without a lot of motion, so not very complex.
I need to bring this animation into Flash Professional to add a ClickTAG so clicks on the ad can be tracked via the ad server.
I tried doing this with two different methods, via exporting a .swf from After Effects and importing that into the stage at Flash Pro.  I also tried exporting an .xfl from After Effects and opening that up in Flash Pro.
Both methods work just fine.
I am able to add the ClickTAG and wish to export it again to a .swf file that can be used as my banner ad (with Adwords Display Network).
But the problem I am having is I can't seem to figure out how to compress the ad enough to get it below the 150kb size limit that Google Adwords has for flash ads.  Without getting total loss of quality, I can't get the exported swf below 1.2 MB.
I even tried cutting the FPS down to 5fps and heavily compressing the frames further, and I couldn't even get it below 200kb!
This is such a simple flash ad, and I see far more complex motion in flash ads on Google's Display Network, so I'm assuming this ad I made CAN INDEED be compressed to under 150kb while maintaining enough quality.
I've even tried exporting from After Effects as a JPEG sequence with heavy compression--and importing the sequence into Flash and trying it that way--NO LUCK.
Does anyone know how I can take this simple animated banner I created in After Effects, add my ClickTAG in flash and export it to under 150kb?
I have been racking my brain on this and would greatly appreciate any assistance or guidance.
Thanks so much,
GB

Hi GB,
There are various ways in which one can optimize/reduce the size of the output swf file.
Some of them are listed in the following likns and may be of little help to you

  • Flash Audio Players

I downloaded a Flash player for my website, and I'm trying to
get it to play mp3's but if you compress them too much theres a
flash bug where you get this "Chipmunk Effect". Thats where the
audio is really sped up and sounds like the delicious rock trio the
    chipmunks.
Anyway, the flash player I'm using doesnt support WMA files
or anything, but I was wondering if there are players that support
WMA's and if that woudl resolve/avoid this Chipmunk Effect whooy.
I have to be able to reduce these audio file's size for my
site, bandwidth issues... They're just phone calls so it doesnt
matter if they're over compressed. I just have to be able to get it
    to work right.
So basically what I'm looking for is maybe a better Flash
audio player, or better info on what sort of audio formats / audio
compressions Flash supports. OR anyway to get rid of that chipmunk
effect when the Flash player is playing MP3s. Anyone have any
    ideas?
    This
is the player I'm using now

The way I understand it, if you compress MP3s outside of
Flash to odd kHz rates that are not multiples of 8, this will
happen. So if you have a 12kHz compressed file, rather than an 8hKz
or 16kHz file, this playback problem will happen. Don't take me at
my word for this, but I recall seeing such an explanation on
    another forum.

  • Flash Pro CS5.5 "Debugger Failed to Launch"

I'm running Flash Pro CS5.5 on Win 7 Pro x64 with 8GB RAM.  My .fla is HUGE (it's a game I'm working on) ~750mb.  My exported .swfs are ~35mb.
I can open my project and test the movie one or two times (usually once) before I am unable to test the movie.  I'll see the "Exporting SWF Movie" splash screen and when that closes, nothing happens.
If I try to debug CTR+SHFT+ENTER the movie, I see the "exporting SWF Movie" screen and then get an error statin that the debugger failed to launch.
I have a feelin that this is due to the Publish Cache.  My machine is hovering around 4GB or RAM usage while rendering the movies.  Flash Pro CS5.5 is 32Bit so maybe the debugger is crashing trying to access memory outside of it's allocation?
I have uninstalled CS5.5, run the Adobe cleaner and reinstalled and have the exact same problem.
    Any ideas?

If you use timelines (ouch) you can get seamless video or audio loops. Although I imagine you may be doing some transforms on the sound and I myself would rather keep everything in code. But I have still to this day had very little luck with seamless looping via code-only. But the compression Flash does is no different at all than you batch compressing down all those audio files using Adobe Media Encoder.
It's not hard and will save you tons of memory. Just duplicate your full quality audio folder so you have them save. Make a MP3 preset in Adobe Media Encoder with your desired mp3 settings. Drag the folder you want to have better compressed versions and apply the preset to them. Bonus points if the folder is in the same location you initially imported from because you can just select all audio and hit update in flash and you're done. File size should drop drastically. Then while you have the audio still selected you can hit properties and tell them all NOT to compress on export so it'll use the compression you already did (in a cleaner way). Then your export time will drop significantly and your filesize will too. Your memory issue should be gone and flash should be stable.
Let me know if you want me to test exporting. I doubt I'll have an issue but unfortunately all that can tell you is either your Flash is acting up (8GB should be WAY more than enough), or you really somehow are running low on ram.

When I try to debug my app, debugger skips breakpoints, otherwise it works ok. I tried putting breakpoints in various project files and it doesn't catch a single of them. And yes, I checked "permit debugging".
Looking forward for a solution, because I just can't debug with trace() function.

    Tricky...
    My guess is B.
The ACE Appliance does not support 250 virtual devices, that looks more like the ACE module for Cat6K

  • SWC PNG's invisible when compression is set to JPEG in Flash Builder 4.7/AIR 3.4

Moved my ActionScript Mobile Project game from Flash Builder 4.6 / AIR 3.2 yesterday to the new release of 4.7 / AIR 3.4. One side effect was that when my PNG's in my assets SWC were set to use JPEG compression instead of PNG, they are invisible at runtime. I haven't found any mention of this when searching so far. I can just use PNG compression for now, but it's nice to have the choice. Anyone else run into this problem?

I haven't seen this come up, however you might want to give our latest AIR 3.5 build a try (12/11/2012 - AIR 3.5 Runtime and SDK Update).  If it still occurs, could you please open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com?  Please post back with the URL so that others affected can add their comments and votes.

  • Some of Photo (JPEG)-compressed images by Flash Pro are not shown in AIR app (3.7/3.8)

Does anyone see this issue happening? In Flash Pro it's OK, but in AIR, it's broken.
    https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3558175
    Problem Description:
Some JPEG-compressed images in swc produced by Flash Pro CS6 is not shown in AIR.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Create a fla with Flash Pro CS6
    2. Put a png image in it and open the property of the image to make sure its compression option is Photo (JPEG)
    3. Produce an swc out of the fla
    4. Create an AIR app that shows the contents in the swc
    Actual Result:
    All images are shown
    Expected Result:
Some of the images are not shown (nothing is shown where they are supposed to be)
    Any Workarounds:
Use Lossless (PNG/GIF) for all images

i was able to get it to work from a suggestion in another thread: if you write a JSFL that goes through all your bitmaps and makes sure they do not uset he default compression of the document, but instead use custom compression (it can match the default however). this worked for me

Does anyone know why I'm getting green flashes when I compress my movie for DVD Studio Pro? It plays (relatively) fine in FCP, but when I compress it (using Compressor) for DVD output I got a movie full of green flashes.
It's really annoying and I can't figure it out. I've had nothing but problems with FCP.

  • Flash file 1920x1080 (touchscreen) compressed to website version 945x532

    Hi
We have create a flash file for both Touchscreen TV and Website.
The document frame is is 1920x1080 however we would like to export the project so it can be seen on the website at the correct compression.
Is there a way to export the SWF to the required 945x532.
I know how to export it in the HTML however this reads the same SWF that is still too large in file size (not web friendly).
I could pull the compression down to say 10% before exporting the SWF however there must be a better method.
    Thanks
    Craig

Thanks Iranten however my problem is not scaling the swf size as I can change that in dreamweaver or directly from flash by specifying the frame size.
I am trying to find out what the best method for scaling down the frame size and compression with in flash.
My current project is 1920x1080 and the images are all high resolution so they look good on the touchscreen.
I am wondering if you can reduce the frame size in flash and export the SWF file out compressed as a web version.
In short to avoid having to recreate the whole project in a smaller version for the web.
I hope this makes sense.. been working all day and my head is starting to spin out...

  • Why can't Flash CC compress a SWF as well as Flash CS 5.5?

Does anyone out here know why this happened?
I have a FLA file from which I needed to export out a SWF no larger than 40kb. Without changing any of the settings, the SWF exported out as 63kb. So I opened up the FLA in Flash CC and went to Publish Settings. Tried changing the JPG Quality, clicked Compress Movie (Deflate), removed the Include Hidden Layers checkmark. When this wasn't enough, I tried compressing each image in the Library by going to each one's Properties. After playing with the image quality for awhile, the smallest I could compress the SWF file was 58kbs.
But then... I tried opening the same FLA in Flash CS5.5. Used the default Publish settings. Did not change the file whatsoever. And the exported SWF was 35kb! Plus the image quality was a heck of a lot better than the 58kbs SWF exported out by Flash CC.
Any ideas why? Does CC add anything to the file that 5.5 didn't? I'm just finding this whole thing odd and annoying to work with when the file size requirements for flash banner ads are still only 40kbs...
    Thanks for any insight!

Yeah - this does make sense.
In Flash CC, I was targeting Flash Player 11.7.
In CS5.5, I was targeting Flash Player 10.2 -- which does not even seem to be available in CC anymore.
Buuut -- I just did a test using Player 10.3 in CC and that got the file down to 45kbs.
So this is great to know! Thanks!

  • Flash JPG compression is terrible.  Can I use Photoshop JPG compression with transparency?

Flash seems to do a far worse job of JPG compression for some reason.  A picture at JPG 80 can look great in Photoshop but completely blocky in Flash.  So I prefer to JPG compress in Photoshop and then just retain that compression when importing to Flash.
However this doesn't work when I need the image to have transparency. In this case I save as PNG-24 in Photoshop and then let Flash do the JPG compression.  But now the image looks terrible unless I go for JPG 90 or above.
Is there some way to get the best of both worlds?  Good quality JPG compression plus transparency?

Well first off, .jpg does not have transparency. So no, you can't have
Good quality JPG compression plus transparency?
For that you'll need a .png or a .gif.
I agree with Rob, never do any compression or resizing of images in Flash .Prepare the image of the correct file type and exact physical dimensions (as it will be used in Flash) before importing into Flash... use PhotoShop or whatever.
There is no free lunch... If your image is physically very large 1000+ x 1000+.... and you want high quality, it's going to be a pretty large file.
Since we have no examples of what size you think is too large, what quality is good/bad, or what the image dimensions are... we can only offer limited advice.
Correctly designing the project from the start is also very important. you might not be able to use a 1680 x 700 background image (too large a file), so you might look into using a much small image and tiling, that is repeating the same small image over and over... for example. So besides "image compression", there are design methods that can help reduce the final Flash file size.
    Best wishes,
    Adninjastrator

  • Compressing Images in Flash

if you have the checkbox for use imported jpeg data selected
within the info for an image, does this mean that there will be
ZERO compression applied to the image from Flash when it is
    exported?
    Thanks.

This from the Flash help file:
The JPEG format lets you save an image as a highly
    compressed, 24-bit
bitmap. Generally, GIF format is better for exporting line
    art, and JPEG
format is better for images with continuous tones, such as
    photographs,
    gradients, or embedded bitmaps.
Flash exports the first frame in the SWF file as a JPEG,
    unless you mark a
different keyframe for export by entering the #Static frame
    label.
1.. Select File > Publish Settings, click Formats, and
    select JPEG Image.
2.. For the JPEG filename, either use the default filename,
    or enter a new
    filename with the .jpg extension.
3.. Click JPEG. Dimensions Enter values for width and height
    in pixels for
the exported bitmap image, or select Match Movie to make the
    JPEG image the
same size as the Stage and maintain the aspect ratio of your
    original image.
Quality Drag the slider or enter a value to control the
    amount of
JPEG file compression. The lower the image quality, the
    smaller the file
size, and the reverse. To determine the best compromise
    between size and
    quality, try different settings.
Note: To change the object's compression setting, use the
    Bitmap
Properties dialog box to set the bitmap export quality per
    object. The
default compression option in the Bitmap Properties dialog
    box applies the
    Publish Settings JPEG Quality option.
Progressive Show Progressive JPEG images incrementally in a
    web
browser, which makes images appear faster when loading with a
    slow network
connection. Similar to interlacing in GIF and PNG images.
    4.. Click OK.

  • How do I compress a huge flash file for a web banner?

    Hi there,
I am having trouble figuring out how to compress a huge flash file for a small web banner. I have 3 jpeg sequences (lowquality) that are used as background animations and the swf file is now over 900kb. I need a file under 200 or even 100.
    thank you for your attention,
    Ayka

The only way to reduce the size of the file is to reduce the sizes of the content it has.  If you go into your Flash Publish Settings and choose the option to generate a a size report then it will publish a report that will let you know how the weight of the file is distributed and you can focus on eliminating that weight from there.

  • What compression to use for HDV video? Is Flash supported?

    Hello folks,
I want to produce a HDV videopodcast. My webserver only has 500MB of space available, so I will need to compress this video files. But what videofiles are allowed in iTunes? The most ideal would be to convert my .mov files into Flash .flv files. But is Flash supperted in iTunes? Or what other options I have to end up with a maximum of 40 MB of video? (the original file is about 1GB)
Thank you so much for any input or advise.
    Cheers

iTunes and QuickTime do not use Flash. If you want to create something in HD, your file size will likely be much larger. More on recommended podcast video formats for iTunes, Apple TV, and iPods:

  • New to Flash - can I compress a video further?

I have Quicktime movies usually about seven minutes long I would like to put on my site. I have converted them to flv with the flash media player, but when I try to upload them to my site with dreamweaver the server usually times out. They are working out around 40MB, and my server administrator has told me they are too big, and I should just put them on youtube. But the whole reason I got Flash was to be able to put them on MY site. Is there anyway I can compress the files further?
    Thanks from a newbie

I know that there is a "using language of...(whatever app, etc)" command to get things done with AppleScript. You might look into that as a method of controling a non-Mac app.
Here is an OK example from a portion of a script that I quickly found in the sample scripts that come with OS X:
    try
    using terms from application "http://www.apple.com/placebo"
tell application SOAP_app of machine SOAPEndpointURL
set this_result to call soap ¬
    {method name:method_name ¬
    , method namespace uri:methodnamespaceURI ¬
    , parameters:method_parameters ¬
    , SOAPAction:SOAP_action}
    end tell
    end using terms from
    return {true, this_result}
    on error error_message number error_number
    if the error_number is -916 then ¬
set the error_message to "The script was unable to establish a connection to the Internet."
    return {false, error_message}
    end try
I have seen the same kind of thing used in many apps! It may be more complicated than cut-n-pasted commands from UI Browser, but I hope this leads you in the right direction.
