Compression speed

Hi,
We are experimenting with compression finding etl slower which is what I would expect compared to uncompressed table.
Using Oracle 11.2.0.3 and trying basic and for oltp on a large fact table has lots of bitmap indexes.
User reporting reporting queries accessing the compressed table up to 3x slower comapre to the equivalent uncompressed table.
Looking at manuals and forums suggest etl can be slower -fine we have plenty of time to load but reports would not be negatively affacted.
Anybody else seen this?

One-third less disc space is believable, 3 times slower while using the same execution plan is hard to believe - although increased CPU is something we might expect. That could easily have the type of performance impact you're talking about.
The information you've given us is too vague, though - how about giving us an example of a query which runs three times as slowly, with the before and after execution plans and stats from a trace file (level 8) that has been passed through tkprof. A report of the session statistics (change) due to the query would also be an important source of helpful information - it might, for example, show us a very large count of "table fetch by continued row".
One question I have which was raised by another member of team was compression of entire database as opposed to compressing just one table.That's the sort of question that suggests the team doesn't know how to look at their test results. If they knew why the query time was slower they wouldn't need to ask the question - as it is they're just hoping for a magic bullet.

Hello,
My new G5 iMac (2.1mhz, 512mb ram) doesn't rip/compress video nearly as fast as my old G4 Powermac (dual 1.25mhz, 1.75GB ram). It took 36 minutes for the G5 but only 21 minutes for the G4 (to rip).
Is it because I only have 512mb ram on the G5? If so how much ram do I need before the G5 exceeds the performance of the G4? That's why I bought it.

You have basicly answered your own question.
Even though there can be a big difference in the different Optical Drives used by Apple in the different machines and there capabilities.
Remember more Ram is always going to affect the speed performance of your machine in the ram intensive use of burning and copying.

Compress nonclustered index on a compressed table

Hi all,
I've compressed a big table, space has been shrunk from 180GB to 20GB using page compression.
I've observed that this table has 50GB of indexes too, this space has remanied the same.
1) is it possible to compress nonclustered index on an already compressed table?
2) is it a best practice?

You saved the disk space, that's fine, but now see if there is some performance impact on the queries, do you observe that any improvement in terms of performance?

Cannot set RMAN compression algorithm

hi guys...
I am using the oracle database 11g on OEL5 with compatible parameter set to 11.2.0.0.0
when i use the following command in the RMAN it gives an error as shown below.

CS4 - Source window showing red, black & speed up footage

Hi people
We are editing some HDV footage using PP CS4.
Has all been going well ... but ...
We have captured footage using HDVSplit (to eliminate issue of video and sound getting out of sync) and the footage plays fine thereafter via windows media player and VLC ..
Then using PPs Media Browser to import into the project several things seem to be happening to some clips ..
We are experiencing PARTs of an imported segment of footage are coming up red or black in the source window... and in some instances the source timeline shows the footage compressed (speed up) and with the rest of the segment on the timeline showing diagonal lines. The speed up footage (100 frames per second rather than 25) can be corrected by adjusting the speed, just unsure why it is happening. We haven't found a way to correct the patches of footage which are coming up red or black in the source window.

I think you have to supply more info re: what you are capturing and what computer you're using ( specs ) and so on.

I'm using PPro CS3 at the moment since I can't get CS4 to work very well on my computer.
On exporting.
I would like to export- adobe media encoder -to Flash video and to quicktime.
I'm sure I used to be able to set VBR 2 pass etc etc with different mbps.
Have I lost these? Can you point me in the right direction?
I only seem to have CBR settings?
I am using CS3 v 3.0 (I don't want to install update to 3.2 as when I did this all audio sync went out by about twelve frames- the ability to batch capture vanished too)

That particular video was encoded using VP6 2-pass VBR, 650kbps, 480x352, from Sorenson Squeeze for Flash v5.0.4.10. I use the VP6-E profile--the VP6-S profile is more if you're exporting HD-sized videos, but since this is originated from SD there's no need to incur extra decoding cycle. I turn on auto keyframes, and generally leave it around the Squeeze default; you may need to edit this setting depending on the footage you're encoding. Leave compression speed set to "best"--this is a counter-intuitive setting that actually should be labeled "compression quality" or have options ranging from "slow" to "faster". "Best" means the encoding runs slower, but results in a higher quality output. Strange, but true.
I crank the minimum quality slider up to about 70-75; this keeps the compressor from getting a little too overzealous. I find that it prevents some blockiness when transitioning from one scene to the next--and in my experience, the added file weight is pretty minimal for the quality gained. If you have fairly static footage with few transitions, you can gain better compression ratios by leaving the minimum quality slider set to a lower threshold. It's these settings that let VBR do its thing.
I never, or at least I haven't yet, enabled the "drop frames" setting. Unless you're trying to compress and distribute HD-sized videos, I think the prevalence and speed of high-bandwidth Internet connections negates this. On the other hand, if you need to stay within a certain bitrate threshold, like for some sort of hardware playout device, you'll probably have to experiment with this in order to produce files that meet the requirements of the hardware. For general web distribution, I've never found the need for this.
For sharpness and noise pre-processing, you'll again have to experiment. There's no magic number for these: it's going to depend on your footage and your tastes. They will both slow down encoding, and can have either a positive or negative effect on your video. I will sometimes use noise pre-processing if I'm encoding from DV or the like, to try to eliminate some of the noise and grain. This makes for a more efficient encode, because the compressor isn't trying to preserve details you don't want to see. These two settings sort of need to work in concert with each other, because one is going to blur the footage to remove noise, and the other is going to sharpen it and bring it back to a certain extent. I suggest experimenting with a short section of video, going with the extremes and then a couple settings in the middle--you'll quickly see the difference. I probably had sharpness set to 5-7, and noise pre-processing set to about 1-2, for this particular video. I think the result is quite clean.
Finally, I leave the minimum/maximum VBR and undershoot settings where they are--haven't needed to tweak these yet. These get pretty technical, and are again really the crux of VBR 2-pass encoding. They are what allow the compressor to "bit budget" an allocated bitrate for a given passage of video, and make sure that the final output stays as close as possible to that allocated bitrate. So far, the defaults have done the trick for me.
One note that I should probably explain, and that's to do with frame size. You might notice above that my output dimensions are 480x352, and not 480x360, as you might expect for a 4:3 video. This is because On2 VP6 (and many other codecs, like H.264) operate optimally in what is called mod16. What this means is that a mod16 codec will first break an input stream into 16x16 blocks, then 8x8 blocks, and then other sizes like 8x4 and 4x4. If you use a dimension that is evenly divisible by 16 (like 352 pixels high) you maximize the efficiency of the codec. I suggest doing this by cropping, and then scaling--not by scaling alone. I typically leave the "Maintain Aspect Ratio" radio button selected in the options, set one dimension (height or width, whichever), and then experiment with the crop filters until you get the other dimension evenly divisible by 16. Once you find the magic number, save the crop filter as a preset and save yourself some headache later! The crop filter will have to change depending on your export size--sometimes you'll crop vertically, and sometimes you'll crop horizontally. And it will also change if you're exporting to a 16x9 file. Sadly, that math stuff we all got into video to avoid will rear its ugly head yet again ;)
Good luck, and let me know if you need any other assistance. The biggest thing to remember is that there is NO magic formula to encoding, regardless of the source footage, the destination, or the codec used. Experimentation is really the only way.

Reading ACE file format?

Anyone know of open-source or commercial Java source code or libraries to read ACE-format files? (http://www.winace.com/). They do have a freely available DLL that'll read them... but that means integrating. Hmm.

Well 'ol boy it looks as if you are in for a spot of JNI. Perhaps one could find a library to read ACE format files but that site declares that their files are in a proprietary format that is not compatible with the ACE format.
"Please note:Although the compression used in both ACE Compressions Libraries offers the same performance regarding compression speed and ratio as the retail version of WinAce, the archive format used in these two Libraries is not fully compatible with the standard ACE format. "

How do I get Vista to go back to the Windows' Vista generic driver after an Extigy upgrade fiasco

Hello all. First, I'm glad to have the opportunity to be a part of this group. I didn't know it even existed, but here I am...so, let me know what you think.
I am a new Windows Vista Ultimate OS owner, and thus far, I'm absolutely thrilled with the advances in video render and compression speeds. However, one of the auto-update features tried to update my Extigy driver, the one that apparently loaded with the original install of Windows Vista, and the update didn't work...go figure. So, now there is no way to use the system restore as it doesn't recognize that there was a change, and I can't get the Extigy to make a peep.
How do I go bakc to the Windows Vista generic driver so I can listem to my voice overs agan?Thanks so much folks... Michael

Final Cut Pro Compressor: Pro Res to H.264

Hi, I'm a business / startup guy ramping up a knowledge base of all things digital video. We'll be receiving a good number of Pro Res files, all of which we'll need to compress to H.264. My question is about time. I'm looking at the Mac Pro four core. Here are my thoughts:
1. How long should it take to compress a two hour film from Pro Res to H.264 (high)
2. If we were to run four instances of Compressor, one for each core, would there be an increase in compression time

The first question is one with too many variables for a single answer. Here is an article that discusses H.264 compression speeds on a MP compared to an iMac and which takes into account some of those variables.
To the second question,again, it all depends. Here is an article by the same author on that subject as well as an Apple support doc. that should be helpful.

15min clip to 3sec clip fast forward

I have a 15 min clip of downtown skyline. I want to compress/speed up and fit into 3/5 sec. Just to show the changing color gradient of skyline. Is this possible to do it FCP?

I just noticed (hey, I'm sleepy) that your clip is 15 minutes ... I mis-read it as seconds. I don't think FCP will speed up a clip that much, but you could speed it up as far as possible, then export it as a QT movie, import the new file and speed it up again until you get the result you want.
You could also create one still frame per second (or one every 10 seconds, etc), then drop the still frames on the Timeline for a time-lapsed effect.

Export MP3 from timeline

My client has asked me to export the audio of there video to MP3 so they can use it as a "message on hold' for there phone system. Any suggestions would be appreciated - PS I've never used compressor and it scares me.

Actually, I think Compressor is really quite easy to work with... It's a much more robust compression tool than what can be done directly from FCP's exporters, and it can even run in the background while you edit in FCP.. if you export a QT movie from FCP, then open that in Compressor, you can compress there while working in FCP. If you export to compressor as I described above, it locks up FCP. However my gurus say that this is likely the best quality you can get from the Pro Apps software compression wise. Furthermore, you can setup a "cluster" or "render farm" and use the processors in more than one computer to work on the compression speeding it up. (Use the Apple QMaster control panel in the system prefs to set this up.

2. The time taken for execution, as per seen from executing a same SQL on HANA varies ( i see that when i am F8 ing the same query repeatedly) , so its not given in terms of pure cpu cycles , which would have been more absolute .
I always thought that there must a better way of checking the speed of execution like checking the log which gives all data regarding executions , than just seeing the output window query executions.

The data is stored the same way in memory as it is on disk. In fact, scans, joins etc. are performed on compressed data.
To calculate the compression factor, we check the required storage after compression and compare it to what would be required to save the same amount of data uncompressed (you know, length of data x number of occurance for each distinct value of a column).
One thing to note here is: compression factors must always be seen for one column at a time. There is no such measure like "table compression factor".

Well, CPU cycles wouldn't be an absolute measure as well.
Think about the time that is not spend on the CPU.
Wait time for locks for example.
Or time lost because other processes used the CPU.
In reality you're ususally not interested so much in the perfect execution on one query that has all resources of the system bound to it, but instead you strive to get the best performance when the system has it's typical workload.
In the end, the actual response time is what means money to business processes.
So that's what we're looking at.
And there are some tools available for that. The performance trace for example.
And yes, query runtimes will always differ and never be totally stable all the time.
That is why performance benchmarks take averages for multiple runs.

Annoying variations in speed of compressions

I have a 60 second spot on my timeline. If I go 'Share', and chose the iPhone option, it takes 15 mins to compress. If I 'Export Quicktime Movie', that takes about ten seconds, then open that self-contained movie in QT Player, chose 'Save for Web' and pick the iPhone option, it takes about a minute to compress. What an annoying inconsistency, eh? Sorry, this is a statement rather than a question....perhaps I'll just submit it as a bug....grumble grumble...

Don't use Share. I find it useless anyway. I always export a movie then use Compressor.

I am new to Adobe Premiere CS6. I am trying to get faster playback rendering speed from my machine.

I am primarily editing GoPro videos with effects like TimeWarp or Twixtor and color correction.
I have tried to run the PPBM6 program with no success. I kept getting failure to access files.
I have been looking at adding a second GTX760 with SLI so they will work together. And possible removing the Quadro if it is slowing things down.

...are you SURE your 760 GPU is "enabled" by PPro, and giving you the option of "Mercury Playback Acceleration" under "General Preferences" ??? If the "Mercury Acceleration" is GREYED OUT and limits you to "software Only", go to Studio 1 website and learn to apply the well known "hack" to enable your 760 in PPro,OR, download their simple program to do it for you.
...Your machine is POWERFUL....especially with your CPU overclock......you MAY want to increase your memory to 32 GB if you are using After Effects....even PPro MAY run better with 32 GB, depending on your workflow.....most systems like yours have at LEAST 32GB system memory.
.....The GoPro codec is natively HIGHLY COMPRESSED and difficult to process, even for beefy machines. That is why they provide the free Cineform tool,( which used to be an expensive professional editing codec), to convert some,or,all of your footage to a more "edit friendly" AVI codec, which will FLY on your machine. HOWEVER, those new AVI files are HUGE.....TRIPLE the original size and requiring a LARGE and FAST disk transfer system. Right now, your single 7200 drive for your media is your SLOWEST component in the chain. The CHEAPEST improvement for you would be to add another MATCHING 2TB 7,200 rpm drive to your existing one and then use the 2 drives to create a fast RAID 0 directly off the mother board to improve the speed of your "media drive". THEN, you MUST insure that this RAID 0 is DILIGENTLY BACKED UP in case of a drive failure in the RAID. This ALSO means you must protect against an unexpected power failure which could destroy the RAID data if the failure happened during a critical write operation.....so,a good UPS is required.
You can OBSERVE how the various components in your system are performing while performing strenuous tasks by bringing up the "task manager" window and watching the CPU load.... if all cores are PEGGED at near 100%, you are "CPU bound". As you are ALREADY overclocked, you can't do anything other than to TRANSCODE your footage to the free Cineform. Your ENABLED GPU can be observed....real time....using the free MSI Afterburner,( or, similar). Certain operations are accelerated by the GPU with PPro....not ALL!! Scaling and some effects will use use the "Mercury Acceleration" while rendering previews AND during export.In some cases, rendering previews,or, exporting can be sped up by TEN TIMES by Mercury Acceleration. Watch the "GPU Usage" on Afterburner to see if the GPU is indeed being used, and if you are "saturating" it to its capacity of 100% with accelerated effects.
Make sure your Windows is fully updated to the current time........make sure your NVidia 760 has the most recent driver and DON'T use the Quadro for now. Set your "Windows page file" to be STATIC on your "C" drive at 24GB. Disable "Hibernation" Set all drives NOT to allow "indexing". Do NOT allow any spinning HDD to be over 50% filled....performance WILL decrease.....make sure any HDD is defragged,( do NOT defrag an SSD ! ). Stop all unnecessary processes, esp. anti-virus programs, while editing. Find out how to best "tune" windows to speed it up at the PPBM 6 and 7 websites.
BE AWARE that the "run of the mill" SSDs use cheaper Sandforce controllers, and are less suited to handle highly compressed digital video files. Samsung PRO models and recent Crucial M550 series SSDs ONLY are recommended for video use. Both these non-Sandforce SSDs maintain high WRITE speeds,( over 400MB/sec), AND maintain their high speeds after reaching their "steady state" condition. Cheaper EVO series and non-Marvell controlled SSDs MAY lose their fast write speeds over time and SLOW YOU WAY DOWN !!! Test your current SSDs by transferring large video files between them and watching MB per second that appears under "details" in the pop up window during transfer. Make sure none are slow.....test them with HD Tune Pro as well.
Certain non-Adobe plug-ins and certain effects may NOT use all the CPU threads well,or, may not use the GPU.....forcing the CPU to do additional work. You will have to identify problem plug-ins,or, effects by switching them on and off to see if any cripple your system.
Your machine is POWERFUL.....go to PPBM7 website and read the "tweakers" page to learn more....then, register for free and TEST your machine with their video benchmark test for PPro. It should do WELL.....AND it will help identify if you have any "bottlenecks" which are impairing your system.
