Concatenated drives/RAID in Lion
An entry of Non-RAID Architectures on Wikipedia say this:
The Mac OS X 10.4 implementation – called a "Concatenated Disk Set" – does not leave the user with any usable data on the remaining drives if one drive fails in a concatenated disk set,
Is this still the case in Lion? Then what's the advantage of using Concatenated vs. a normal RAID 0?
As "greyday records" says, a concatenated set of disks can be a collection of any sized disks and you get to use all the space. In days of old, this was useful if you had files larger than the size of a single disk. These days, you can get disks that are generally speaking much larger any file you might want to store. If you wanted to have a large number of files all on the same file system then concatenated might be useful.
A RAID0 requires equal sized disks, or as "greyday records"s says, the smallest disk in the set is the controlling factor for how much space is used on any of the other disks in the set. Any disk in the set larger than the smallest disk will have unused space.

High Performance computing has been using striped (RAID0) sets for years to get data into and out of the CPU as fast as possible. RAID0 still has more practical uses.

Mirroring Concatenated Drives in Nested RAID
Hi
Is it possible to RAID mirror a concatenated set of drives? The goal is to have expandable, redundant storage. One side of the mirrored RAID would be 1 TB + 3 TB drives and the other side would be a single 4 TB drive. As I add to the concatenated drive RAID, I would add the same amount of storage to the other side in the mirrored RAID.
Does this work or is a mirrored RAID a fixed size that can never be expanded once it's created?

My 2006 iMac is getting a bit long in the tooth and I was thinking of replacing it with a new one. However, Mac have not included an optical drive and I back up my photographs on DVD as well as external hard drives. I also supply DVDs of my work to friends etc.
Will I be able to burn to an external drive using Mountain Lion or other software such as Toast? Does the burn option still exist on the new machines?Hello,

Automatic backups are not working on one drive in Mt. Lion
I am having some trouble with automatic backups from my 2009 MacBook Pro to one drive in Mountain Lion:
* The drive in question is an external 500 GB USB or Firewire drive.
* I encrypted the drive with FileVault 2
* Manual backups work fine to this drive.
* Automatic backups work fine from the MBP to my server at home (running Mt. Lion Server)
I have tried multiple iterations of deleting Time Machine preferences, and even of erasing the external drive, to no avail. The only lead I have is that the MBP logs the following error when I back up to the external drive:

The error makes sense based on the partition map, but I'm not sure how to recreating the missing Apple_Boot volume. I suspect that missing volume is causing automatic backups to fail(???). Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.Please find diskutil cs list output appended to this article. Well, the plot thickens. Now, automatic backups are being skipped on the server backup from the laptop. Thiis started occurring after Time Machine did a lengthy verify (fsck?) of the backup. Automatic backups are working fine from our other three computers. The server backs up to the local disk, and the other two computers use the server. I think the next thing to do is to look at Time Machine preferences...

Cant delete files on external hard drive (Mac OSX Lion, LR3&4)
Lightroom can't send items to trash when deleting files on an external drive if the trash bin is empty for the relevant drive on OSX Lion. This was in LR3 and now in 4. You can get round this by making sure the trash is not emptied after deleting a random file or folder but there has to be a better way!
Also it seems to be a lightroom problem more than OS as Bridge can delete the files with no problem.
Any ideas on this?I'm having the same problem, but there are so many other issues with LR4 -some enormous, some just downright bizarre -that I almost forgot about this one. ;-). Good catch on the empty trash bin though. How'd you figure that out? I'm impressed.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Early 2008) running OSX Lion 10.7.5.
I want to erase the Hard Drive, install Mountain Lion, and manually restore select applications and files.
Is there a known procedure to do this? Any tips or feedback?1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When its download finishes, close the installer and open Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable USB drive with Mountain Lion.
2. Press Option key while your Mac is starting, select the external drive and open Disk Utility.
3. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive.
4. Close the window and install Mountain Lion -
I want to format my hard drive and install Lion, using Snow Leopard at the moment.
I'm running Snow Leopard at the moment, and would like to install Lion.
But I want to wipe my hard drive clean before doing so, is there a way of formating the hard drive as you install the downloaded lion?
Thanks for ur answers.Not that I'm aware of. You can, however, grab the installer file and create a bootable USB thumb drive after downloading Lion and BEFORE you install it. Read here on how to do this.
After downloading, I would let it install. Then reboot with the USB thumb drive, use Disk Utilities to wipe the drive and then install Lion from the thumb drive. Do a backup first. -

I want to create a USB drive for Mountain Lion and have no discs
I have a nice shiny new 27: iMac and was hoping to create a USB boot drive in case I need it. The iMac does not come with a disk drive and Mountain Lion is purchased via the App Store, so there are no disks with which to build the boot drive. I tried downloading Mountain Lion again from the App Store, but it tells me Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer. (yes, the computer that is running Mountain Lion right now)
iTunes Support is not very helpful. They keep telling me that I can't make a boot drive and are unable to help me download if from the App Store.
Surely Apple has created a way to build a boot drive in the case of emergency. There will be no way to defrag my hard drive if I am unable to boot from the USB drive.You have one on your iMac, the recovery partition. Your iMac is not compatible with the App Store version so don't try.
Install OSX on to a thumb drive if you want, it's a waste of time compared to using Recovery.

I had a copy of Mountain Lion on my late 2008 MacBook Pro, having replaced Lion which it came with. But the drive crashed, so I replaced the drive and reinstalled Lion from the original disks I had. How do I get another copy of Mountain Lion?
A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

I currently run Mac Pro with three hard drives. Can I dual boot or even triple boot with Snow Leopard on one drive and Mountain Lion or Lion on others?
I need to keep Snow Leopard so that I can run some old softward.If you are careful you can put at least two on one drive, having Recovery from Lion and Mountain Lion on their own drives though.

No need to erase both drives for a clean install just the drive you are using for the OSX. Though if you are truly starting a fresh then erase and reformat both.
As for Upgrades. Yosemite is the only upgrade now available through the app store as is Server 4.0 for Yosemite. I have not tested the latest server yet and can not comment on it's reliability.
Any server you set up should be thoroughly tested on a closed network before going live.

Did read your other posts and agree with them.
As we all know, it will depend on the amount of footage and resolution as to how much needs to be transported around. Given that its DV or HDV and I'm guessing only a few hours of fottage then there are a few 2 drive esata boxes about which are as portable as some lacie/gtech drives.

Re the 2 bus issue, I would be delighted to be wrong about it. It is through the Avid tech support that I got this info. Todate, I have not been able to get my avid mojo to work on a Lacie PCMCIA FW card at the same time as I have FW drives attached. This seems to sugest that they are not 2 busses, to an avid at least.
Thats why, for portable editing, I am moving towards a macbook pro with esata card for storage and fw free for other uses. -

Did you format the drive for Mac use before you tried to use it as a backup drive?
Are you using Time Machine on the drive? You can't view the contents of its backup database and the only way to access the info is directly from the Time Machine app.
