Configuring Web Parts dynamically from a shared definition?

We are building a large set of pages for our Intranet with (nearly) identical web parts (these are actually search results and refiner WPs with fixed queries, but the details aren't really relevant) Only a few of the WP properties will vary across
pages, the rest should be the same for consistency. Creating and maintaining these page WP configurations manually is going to be a lot of effort -- we could use custom web part definitions to provide some level of reuse, but that only helps with the initial
setup; if (when!) we need to make changes to the WP config, we will still have to change each one individually.
So what I'd like to do is find a way to centralize the configuration for all of the related web parts,
and make it dynamic, i.e. the web parts should get property definitions at load time, vs coming from the personalization store. That way if we need to update a web part property, we need change it only once, rather than for every individual
web part.
I'm thinking about leveraging the existing web part gallery for the location of the shared configuration, as it seems like a reasonable place to capture definitions. What I'm not sure about is how/where to use it.
One thought is to create a custom, generic "wrapper" web part class whose only configuration is a path to a .webpart/.dwp file in the site WP gallery. When the wrapper WP is loaded, it in turn creates a child web part (transient, not persisted)
on the fly using the web part definition. The complexity comes with the requirement to override the common, shared properties for any given WP instance. Not sure how to allow a page author to specify these overrides in a general way.
Another possibility is hooking into the web part persistence mechanism, hacking the Load operation to pull certain properties from the central config vs the stored WP instance definition.
Has anyone come across something like this? Any ideas or suggestions?

I may not understand the case correct, if it is the default search result page with search web part, refiner web parts, you can use search center, to make sure the site use the same result page, doesn’t need to use large set of pages with the same web part
structure.
If this is actually needed, and you need to change all the web part intances’ property in all pages when you update the property for the web part in one page, you may considering customize the web part, on the page load event, check the web part property
changes, if it is changed, then iterate all the web part instance on the web part, to update the web parts’ property.

I have examined that context node __00 has been enhanced,and has a class name z___00. But when I created a new attirubute by right click " Attributes" with wizard under context node __00.There is still a error message "view is not enhaced or copied with wizard".
But when I created a method "getvaliation " in the class of context node zcl__00, the attribute 'valiation' automatically created(at the same time the method "getvaliation' automatically created for the attribute 'valiation') and I need not to create attibute 'validation' by wizard . It seemed as if the problem is resloved. But when I make test for it in web ui .There is a runtime erro message.
Do I need to make some configurations in the business object layer for the checkbox? but the checkbox is only used as a flag to decide whether a backgoud job is needed to be executed.

Can a content query web part dynamically query items from a particular that exists in multiple subsites

I have a site collection with multiple subsites. All of the subsites have a list called "Status" which is using content types for its column management.
I want to use a content query web part in the parent site level to query 1 item from everyone of these subsites. Is there a way to do this?
The only way I can do this is if I create an individual content query web part for each subsite as I did not find an option for my content query to query from multiple subsites at once.

You can do it using CQWP. For instance, if you have a site column called 'Rollup' that is part of your content type, that will be part of all your subsites custom list 'Status'. On the root site CQWP set the source to 'Show item from the following site and
all subsites' and choose your root site (first image below). Then add 'additional filters' and set the value to 'Yes' as shown in second figure below; you will be able to roll up all the data to the root site like below. Now, you need to decide what query
field you will use that is unique and that can roll up.

Target Audiences in Content editor web part created from Snippet Gallery

Hi,
I have created a Content editor web part from the Snippet Gallery in SP 2013 Office 365 and placed it in my master page. It works, but not the Target Audiences. It's linking to a text file which displays, but I only want certain AD groups
to be able to view. Everyone can see the web part.
Any help would be appreciated.

Web Part Error From build-in "Contacts" App

My SP 2013 Foundations has been functioning normally for the past few months until this week. I added the built-in "Contacts" app back when the site was built. This week for some reason when I go to click "Add", I receive the following
error:
"Web Part Error: A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Page cannot be displayed or imported. The type could not be found or it is not registered as safe. Correlation ID: f590159c-dcb7-a0f5-9dc9-76bb9b18c79e."
I can click "edit" on that list and make changes fine.
Attempted to Google this one but for the most part my search has turned up nothing. This error seems to be experienced most times by individuals who built their own custom web parts and did not add Safe Controls to the web.config file. How could I get an
error like this with the default/built-in app?
I don't see anything helpful in the logs ( %SystemDrive%\inetpub\logs\LogFiles ) as it just shows the point where I get the error, without displaying any more info: 2013-04-26 14:55:03 192.168.0.67 GET /Lists/Company+Directory/Contact/newifs.aspx

Create a Site Definition file with Visual Web part in Visual Studio

I tried to create a site definition file in Visual Studio 2013 and SharePoint 2013 by following the MSDN tutorial:
Walkthrough: Create a Basic Site Definition Project. Near the end, I added a virtual web part control to the site definition and registered MyWebPartControls in the site definition's default ASPX page as written in the MSDN tutorial:
Unfortunately, IntelliSense doesn't show any MyWebPartControls: tags, and VisualWebPart1 is highlighted with a warning “Element 'SMWebPart3' is not a known element. This can
occur if there is a compilation error in the Web site, or the web.config file is missing.”
Since it’s a warning, I went ahead to build and deploy the solution. However, when I used the site definition template to create a subsite, it returned a parser error:
Unknown server tag 'MyWebPartControls:TestSiteDef1.VisualWebPart1'
I spent half day researching and debugging, and finally solved the problem. The issue is on the registration line:

The $SharePoint.Project.AssemblyFullName$ is a replaceable parameter to provide values for SharePoint solution items whose actual values are not known at design time. Unfortunately, it does not find the right assembly name during the deployment. It should
be replaced by the Assembly’s Strong Name. Here is how I fixed the problem step by step:
In Solution Explorer, open the package node and double click Package.package
Click Manifest tab in the Package.package.
Copy the full assembly name in the package’s manifest. It may be similar like this:

Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=a300f1f2da8ae976"
Back to the site definition’s default.aspx page, replace the
Assembly="$SharePoint.Project.AssemblyFullName"
in the registration line with the copied text:

Change the Namespace from
Namespace="TestSiteDef.VisualWebPart1"
to
Namespace="TestSiteDef".
The line to register the web part in a site definition file will look like this:

Clean, build and deploy the solution. It works like charm. (Note: the warning message on visual web part may still exist, but you can ignore it).

Assuming your .ascx.vb file is inheriting from the web part class, you can add the custom properties in the same manor (language syntax aside).
Be sure to use the attributes to correctly identify and scope the properties. (see:

How do I get a web part to display items from a dropdownlist?

I have a DropDownList that am filling with items from a list. The part of my code that am using to read the list and populating the drop down works just fine. I am now trying to figure out how to display the contents of the drop down on a web part. I know
it sounds like a straight forward and easy thing to figure out, but I have blanked out. Does anyone have a snippet I can take a look at? This is how I am currently reading from a list to create the drop down...

UPDATE: My dropdownlist is a web part property. So when editing the web part, the drop down control appears in the web part property. Now that part is working just fine. The part am having an issue with is, the second part of my requirement is that I want
to display that same information within the drop down on the web part. Not as another drop down, but just to display them as a vertical text list on the web part.

Out of the box Media Web Part in VideoPlayerPage.aspx is not video loading dynamically after changing Media Setting

We are on SharePoint 2013 and we are using the default SharePoint 2013 Asset Library to upload videos. We are using purely out of the box sharepoint 2013 with no customization at all.
When we click on any videos, It will lead us to the videoPlayerPage.aspx and plays the video that we click on which is what we wanted. But we do not want the player to play videos on load thus we did the following action
Edit Page
Click on the Media Web Part checkbox and the Media Tab in the Ribbon appears
Uncheck "Start Media Automatically"
Stop Editing
After doing this, no matter whatever video was click, it will only load the video which we perform the action on.
How can we undo this change or revert back as we need the videoplayerpage.aspx to load video based on what we click in Asset Library?

I just did this myself and it did the same to me when editing it via the page editing.
If you open in SharePoint Designer, you can browse to the page (/Forms/Video/VideoPlayerPage.aspx) and change the property in the HTML. This will keep the web part properties from getting overwritten in the DB. You will then be able to open each
video without it playing automatically.
NOTE: You need to delete the asset library, then add it back in order to apply this.

How to add the Note board web part to a page with powershell

Hi everyone,
I've been looking around everywhere but haven't seen it explicitly mentioned.
Does anyone know how to add the Note Board web part to a Team Site page, e.g. Non-publishing site, Left Zone, First webpart in the zone in powershell?
Examples like this one http://adicodes.com/adding-web-part-to-page-with-powershell/ only talk about custom web parts uploaded from a local drive.
The example here looks good - http://spcrew.com/blogs/lists/posts/post.aspx?id=21 but is it for the Page Viewer Web Part. How would you go about getting the correct name for the note board web part and configuring it?

According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to add the Note board web part to a page with PowerShell.
The name of the Note Board web part is SocialCommentWebPart.

SP2013 - Date Filter Web Part looses connection when used in a site template

Hi,
I created two table reports in SQL Reporting Services 2012 and inserted in a web page using the Reporting Service Report viewer in SharePoint 2013 with CU Dez 2013. The two reports require two dates and I use two date filter web parts (I did not try the
date range solution I saw in the fórum).
So the user inputs the two dates in date filters that send the information to thereports in the same page.
They work in the site and I saved it as template. However when I create e new site using it as a templates, the date filter connections are broken and of course, they did not work.
For another report where I usea text filter, it worked without any problem in the template.
Does anybody know any workaround?

The new site based on the saved site template will generate new ID for date filter web part, in the web part page the SPWebPartConnection "ProviderID" value seems still to reference the original date filter web part ID (see from
SharePoint Designer), as a workaround we can re-configure the web part connection from the web part page manually or programmatically from that new site web part page.

Page Viewer Web Part with horizontal scrollbar

Hi,
I added a page viewer webpart to a sharepoint 2013 website and placed a reporting services report url on it, however in some users the browser shows a horizontal scroll bar and cuts the report area. This is not version related because
I can see it well in IE10 in one user and in others it shows the reported problem.
Seems to be browser settings. Any ideas?

According to your post, my understanding is that some users’ browser shown a horizontal scroll bar in the page view web part.
You can disable the horizontal using the CSS style as the following.

Note: the WebPartWPQ3 is the webpart ID.

How can I resize the size of the Excel web part?

I have a spreadsheet that i want to use to populate a page in my SharePoint site. i copied the workbook to the site, created the page and added the excel web part. then i linked the workbook to the web part and submitted. it displays but only
about 25% of the sheet shows. i dont want to use the thumbs to scroll inside the web part. i want the web part sized to show the entire spreadsheet. cant seem to find how to size the web part. Can some kind soul help me out here.

According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to resize the size of the Excel web part.
Per my knowleadge, most of the time excel web parts turn out ugly, due to the fact that they’re rendered in an iframe and therefore the browser doesn’t resize the container to fit the content.
As a workaround, we can edit the page where you want the resizing to happen, add in a content editor web part, and paste the following code into the source editor.

Which to use in App part or web part

Recently I have started working on SharePoint 2013 but sadly I find it very confusing specially App part and web part.
In app part gallery also we have doc library,lists and in web part gallery also, which to use.
As a developer seeing future job perspective I should choose which option developing app part or developing web part.
I basically work with On-premise version no option of cloud. Can i create app for my On-premise version and how any link.

App Part also known as Client Part is one of the three ways in which an app can be presented to an end user. An App Part provides a way to mount an app to SharePoint. It uses an Iframe html element inside a SharePoint page to display the contents of an app.
In App Parts, the UI and the app content is generated remotely with the app code running outside of the SharePoint server. This ensures complete isolation between the SharePoint surrounding interface and the embedded app. SharePoint automatically creates an

Both App Parts and Web Parts are listed in the Web Part gallery from where they can be added in a page. From an end user's perspective, App Part is like a Web Part - both of them provides a way to add a piece of functionality to a page. However, there are primary
differences between them in how they are developed and deployed. In App Part, the app code runs outside of the SharePoint while Web Part code runs within SharePoint. So, poorly built apps does not impact SharePoint environment as in case with poorly built
Web Parts.

Thanks for your reply. Actually i am creating a table with row and columns in Custom page layout. in my table there will be few rows with columns. if i use following html and overlapping web part each other. As i want to have more than 2 web part will be
in one row with separated columns. Please correct me if i need to change the html.

Excel Services - slicer in web part?

Is there a way to put a PowerPivot slicer into an Excel Services web part?
From what I've found, it looks like slicers aren't a named object that can be displayed, but it's difficult to tell. Is everyone really only using Excel Services in Excel Web Apps?

JJ78 you are my hero - the print-area idea works wonderfully! I'd been looking for a way to just display my PivotCharts and slicers in a "clean" view (without the Excel row and column headers, or the unappealing necessity of hiding gridlines and
moving the supporting PivotTables to way down on the page). The slicers are visible and work, and overall it is a much cleaner look to a Web part to NOT to be so Excel-like!
Note for anyone else using JJ's elegant solution who may not be as familiar with print areas in Excel:
1. In Excel, select the worksheet area you want to display (for me , this was the cells containing/around two PivotCharts and two slicers)
2. In the Ribbon, select the Page Layout tab
3. Click on Print Area - Set Print Area
4. In the Ribbon, select the Formulas tab
5. Beside the Name Manager (which as JJ says is where you can check the defined names within the workbook, to prevent conflicts) , click Define Name
6. Type in a name (like "PrintArea") - you will see your selected cell range in this dialog
7. Click OK
