Confusion with Lighting Effect.
For some reason when I try to use the Lighting Effect. It's blacked out and I can't figure out why. What can I do?
And why does some of the option under custom keep making the program crash?
It is.
Is that why?

Filter - Render - Lighting Effects seems to be somewhat less than perfectly functional for me.
Unlike another recent poster, I'm seeing the controls okay, but they don't actually seem to work properly. Worse, I can reliably produce a crash.
I have an ATI Radeon HD 5670 and Catalyst 12.6 (latest released) drivers for Windows 7 x64, Advanced mode GPU operation. My detailed system info can be found here: Link
Chances are this is a display driver issue, but I want Adobe to know about it.
Here's what I see...
For testing I create a middle-gray square document, 8 bits/channel, sRGB, then start the Lighting Effects filter on it:
If I toggle the preview setting off and on a number of times, this happens:
This is reproducible, though it sometimes takes more or less Preview toogles. Here is the pertinent information from several such Photoshop crashes:
Next I am going to try Normal and Basic mode to see if they make any difference with this problem. I'll follow up here.
-NoelNoel, followed your example and no crashes on my system (Intel 4000 card with latest production drivers) but horribly slow, probably the slowest filter I have ever tried - Basically unusable.....

Need help with Lighting Effects; CS3
So, let's say that you were trying to work out some customization using the Lighting effects under: Filter > Render > Lighting Effects.
I understand that there is a very specific file that has the Styles.
Any chance I can fix this problem? If you mean that they're grayed out then that's because you're not in RGB color mode with 8bits/channel. If you mean that the filters simply don't show up in the Filters menu then they're probably hidden in which case go to Edit->Menus and make sure that the Set dropdown is set to Photoshop Defaults (switching to the Basic workspace changes the menus to the Basic set that hides a lot of menu items)

Urgent - Need help with Lighting Effects Filter
Hi,
I need urgent help on something regarding the Lighting Effects filter in Adobe Photoshop CS5. I need lighting effect urgently to complete a project.
I am using Photoshop CS5 on a Windows Vista computer in 64-bit mode.
On the net it is given that you can run photoshop CS5 in 32-bit mode to use the lighting effects filter - both on Mac and PC.
My Problem:
While on the net it is given how to change from 64-bit to 32-bit and vice-versa, I have my Photoshop CS5 installed on 'E - Drive' and not on 'C - Drive' due to lack of space. I have followed all the instructions on how to open it in 32-bit mode on the net, but I still cannot use the lighting effects plugin.
What I need is if someone could give simple and clear instructions on how to open Photoshop CS5 32-bit version instead of opening the default 64-bit version on Windows Vista - that would be great.
Looking forward to answers.
Thanks. That advice about running the 32 bit version of cs5 for the Render> Lighting Effects filter
only pertains to the mac version of photoshop cs5.
The lighting effects filter does work in the 64 bit version of photoshop cs5 on windows, your
document just has to be 8 bits/channel and in the RGB Color mode (Image>Mode) same
for using the lighting effects filter in the 32 bit version of cs5.
Added: In general it's frowned upon installing photoshop on drives other than C drive.

Help requested with the background of lighting effects
I need help creating a light background when rendering with light effects. I am selecting filter, then render, then lighting effects. From there I am choosing an omni light to create a blue light shining from above on my project. The problem I have is that the blue light fades into black or grey. I need the blue light to disseminate or fade into a white background instead. I have tried all sorts of options with changing the background in the lighting effects menu to no avail. I have photoshop CS3. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
JimCould you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels and dialog visible?

Lighting Effects filter in PS (CS6; 64-bit) crashes program
This is a Win7 64-bit OS, new CS6 installation with all updates applied/installed.
Use of Lighting Effects rendering filter in PhotoShop (CS6, both 64- and 32-bit versions) causes PS to crash.I did make some suggestions, which you appear to have only dabbled with... Did you try Basic mode? Did you try checking/unchecking all the various settings in all the combinations? Be exhaustive. You feel your system is advanced, I get that, but you're looking to isolate a problem here.
I'm not as familiar with nVidia as I am with ATI, but have you investigated the various settings their driver UI provides?
I'm not saying there's a definite fix in there, but In doing these things you might:
Discover a combination of settings as a workaround that makes it work acceptably for you.
Be able to tell Adobe or nVidia exactly what to look for if they want to investigate it further.
By the way, have you contacted nVidia and let them know Photoshop is crashing when it tries to use their GPU for Lighting Effects?
Lastly, some folks have found that fully uninstalling the display driver, cleaning up any remnants of it and prior display drivers that may still be laying around, and installing the latest driver sometimes helps. Display driver writers are apparently not all that good at writing installers.
I never had this issue with CS4... Only CS6
People sometimes like to say that kind of thing, but (and I'm sorry to be blunt): So what?
This is an entirely new program with new, different, and greater demands of your computer system. It's using more and different features of your GPU than any prior version.
I can only assure you that it does work okay for some others. I have had no problems with Lighting Effects myself. But you should know that since Photoshop CS6 first came out I *HAVE* had crashes while trying to do 3D modeling work. At least some of those were caused by the (then current) ATI display drivers. I (and others) contacted ATI and described the problems, and their subsequent driver versions have gotten more stable. Their current version seems to work rather well with Photoshop CS6. My point is that things can get better. Hang in there.

Lighting Effects crashing Photoshop CC 2014
Anyone having issues with Lighting Effects crashing Photoshop CC 2014 every time it attempts to launch? Not a problem in previous version.
That's probably correct - it's a Toshiba laptop which has been fine until now - has an AMD HD8400 graphic processor which probably just can't hack the upgrade. May need a proper workstation now!
Thanks,
Nigel. -
For the first time ever I've been looking at (and trying to use) this effect in Photoshop. It seems like it could be good, but the method of moving settings and adjustments seems incredibly cheap and nasty.
When you start to place a lighting effect on an image you get a small preview image alongside the adjustment controls, but that image is so small it's almost impossible to see what you're doing and where you're doing it. Surely there is a bigger/better way of seeing where you are placing the effect and making adjustments?
Have I missed something, or is that as good as it gets?Hi Kev,
The Lighting Effects is a very valuable filter from my perspective as I use it on about a dozen images each year. The problem with the interface is that it is a very old filter and has never been updated. The little preview window is particularly hard to get used to as it is easy to lose the light outline handles and even manipulating them is problematic. There is no better preview window that that which you find frustrating.
That being said, with patience and some practice it can do great lighting effects. Using alpha channels can add bevel and emboss effects which have a different quality that those found in styles and sometimes are more valuable. I will say that even with considerable practice I still am accustomed to experimenting several times when I use the filter before becoming completely satisfied with the result.
I really wish that Lighting Effects would be updated with a new UI but don't believe it will be as the only 'old' filters which seem to get upgraded are those which benefit photographers who really are the bulk of the user base. I mean hey, they finally made the Brightness/Contrast filter useful after it had long ago proven to be useless.
Here's a Lighting Effects piece. The background and puzzle were two 3D renders which were then manipulated in Photoshop. The table top, wainscot, molding and light fixture were all made in Photoshop. The whole thing was lighted with Lighting Effects.

How do I get Lighter Effects work space?
I am having problems with Lighter Effects. I can't seem to get it to open its work space. I go into Filters, Render Lighter Effects and click on it. When I do, it blinks the properties and then adds a layer naming it Lighter Effects. But it never opens the work space. It only sometimes opens up the Lighter Effect properties. And without the work space, I can't do anything with the properties anyway.
I need a way to fix this so the Lighter Effect work space appears when I click on the Lighter Effects in the Filter Render. I have just re-installed and updated Photoshop CC 2014, if that helps those out there helping people like me who are not experts at Photoshop. You can find the system requirements by clicking on the hyperlink in my previous post.
Re: 3D, you should be able to, for example, open a 3D model via 3D > New 3D Layer from File. Or you could select a normal 2D layer and go to 3D > New Mesh from Layer. If you can't do this your video card does not meet system requirements or the driver may need to be updated.
If your Lighting Filter is working properly your window should look something like this: -
Lighting effects trouble to show up
iWorking on a document, click on Filter, Render, Lighting Effects. The system opens and closes very quickly one on the right menu window and duplicate the layer I'm working with Lighting Effects name but I can not apply or edit any effect it can not open the parameters options

Tried to use 'render/lighting effects' on 5 more or less new different laptops now. All kind of Window versions.
They all have at least 4GB RAM. The Graphic Card is compatible.
Layer to work on is RGB-Type.
It's all about Photoshop CC 2014, trial version.
When I go to 'Lighting effects' it says first:
'The 3D features require that 'Use Graphics Processor' is enabled in the Performance preferences. Your video card must meet the minimum requirements and you may need to check that your driver is working correctly.'
- I switched the 'Use Graphics Processor' on and off and restarted new - nothing happens.
- Video card is compatible.
Second it says:
''Could not apply the workspace because there is not enough memory (RAM)'
- RAM on all the computers I tested it with is at least 4GB
Please help!We would need to know the amount of Video ram you have. If it is above 512 MB, then check for driver updates.
Windows OS
Click Start.
On the Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type "dxdiag" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
The DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens. Click the Display tab.
On the Display tab, information about your graphics card is shown in the Device section. You can see the name of your card, as well as how much video memory it has.
Once you know the kind of graphics card you have, visit the manufacturer's website to download the latest driver. Here are links for downloading drivers from the most common graphics card manufacturers:

Problem with the light effect in Nokia 3110c
I bought my phone a 3 weeks back....i was checking the profiles and i found this option called light effects....i thought it was something like the Rhythmic Backlight in some of the other Nokia phones....But when i switched it on and checked it is not working!....can anyone help me with this?? what exactly is light effects??
And also....my Phone's software version says v06.02 but when i tried to check for the update on this site it says the latest one is v05.05 is it a greater version than mine??
Message Edited by kingkalyan on 03-Oct-2008 07:55 AMHi there,
the light effects option you are referring to performs the functions of notification lights on your device. by turning this light effects option on, lights contained on your device will either flash or fade in and out (sorry but i do not know where the lights are contained on the 3110 classic, but i guess they are there somewhere, maybe on the side?).
version 5 is less than version 6, so of course this is not and cannot be an update.
p.s. i just checked a 360 view of your phone and there seems to be no lights on the side panels of your phone. light effects i guess are referring to the keypad or button backlighting, see if they work when you receive a new message or missed call/sms. also see if there is a Power Saver function in the Display Settings, by turning the Power Saver off you may be able to enable/enable more light effects

Why can't I use lighting effect filter in CS6 with an 8bit RGB file?
I've read all over that the filter only works with an 8bit/RGB file, which my file is, so I don't understand what the problem is. I am attempting to light a smart object (3d bevel and extruded text) that I created in illustrator, and thought that I might just need to rasterize the smart object before the filter would work, but even after I render it and or flatten the image, merge visible, I still don't have the option to use lighting effects! Please help!
Thank you for your prompt reply. After doing a bit of investigating I'm finding out this video card is pretty shite (work owned machine), and I didn't have the gp enabled in performance prefs. I had been using such an old version of PS previously I wasn't aware there was a setting for this, frankly. Per some other threads I found, I updated to the latest graphics accellerator drivers for it as well, but unfortunately the enable gp option is still greyed out, so I'm guessing it just won't run this onboard gpu doesn't meet some minimum system requirement or something. Thx again.

Trouble with Photoshop CC 3D and Lighting Effects errors
I can not use Lighting Effects and 3D because of these errors keep appear
I have 4GB RAM and I already checked 'Use Graphics Processor' box. Photoshop CS6 works fine with the same setting but Photoshop CC doesn't. Video card and RAM didn't cause these errors. I think it's Photoshop CC. I want to use only Photoshop CC and remove Photoshop CS6 but I can't because I still need to use 3D and Lighting Effects. That cost my hard drive memory to use 2 Photoshop versions at the same time.
I already removed both of them clearly and reinstalled but it doesn't work.
Please help me out! Thanks!

I have Photoshop cc and Lightroom 5.5. My computer runs windows 8.1, 64 bit, with GeForce GTX 680 graphics card.
I am trying to use the lighting effects filter, but it is grayed out so I cannot select it.
Can you tell me what I need to change in order to use the lighting effects filter? This is the Lightroom forum. I don't use the lighting effects very often in Photoshop. But if I recall correctly, it will only work on 8-bit images.

Elements no longer saves files!
For years I have been running Elements 2 & 7. Mostly I use 2 for manipulation and 7 for printing. A few weeks ago I could no longer save files in 2. I tried to un-install 2 and then re-install it. The problem continues - I get the message "Could not
