Connecting to a Catalog following Clean Install

I had to do a clean install of Win 7, and subsequently a clean install of Elements.  I have the old data on an external drive.  How to I direct the "Manage Catalog" function to bring the catalog into the new installation?

Have you cleaned your old configuration. If no, then you can take back up your catalog on external hard drive through File->Backup catalog and thn restore it later through File->Restore catalog.
If you have cleaned your old configuration and need to bring catalog into new installation, then browse to open catalog manager dialog box through File->Catalog, click on Browse button and Browse to location where catalog is situated. Select the location, the catalog would show up in catalog manager dialog box, you can open and continue on this.

  • Still getting 'unable to connect to background process" after clean install

I just did an erase and install on my system, installed FCP and DVDSP/Compressor (FCP HD), tried to export a file, and am getting that error still.
It does seem odd though that it seemed to remember my settings, because it noted that my firewire drive was missing. Also, I got that Qmaster error (An item in the Startup Items folder ("/Library/Startup Items/Qmaster") does not have the proper security settings. The first time I got the error, I hit 'decide later: and tried to export. Had a problem. Then I hit 'fix' the next time the error came up, but it did not fix the problem as Compressor will not export.
Everything else seems new though, from scratch.
    Compressor worked fine until recently.
    What do I do now?

Well somehow I'm not getting that startup error anymore. I've tried a bunch of things and one of them was, I think, to choose 'fix' in the dialog box.
In answer to the above question, Compressor version is 1.21 (was 1.2 but I upgraded as suggested in the Apple article. Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 .
I'll say it again before everyone reminds me of the need to upgrade: yes I'm aware but cannot afford it at this time.
It appears that Compressor and my internet network connection do not play well together. So I've done a bunch of tests and the only thing that seems to work is the thing suggested in this article: http://www.kashum.com/rbf.pl?c=blog&i=1152611689&referer=r .
I went into system prefs>network and under location, created a new location. Under that new location, under the 'show' menu, I chose 'network port configurations' and unchecked all the ports, and hit apply now. This basically disabled all the network ports. I restarted the computer and the compressor export worked.
It's not a total fix, but at least it's something.
Testing a little further, it appears to be the built in ethernet that's causing the problem. I unchecked each port individually, restarting the computer after each one then trying to export a clip. When I start ithe system with the ethernet unchecked, then try to export through Compressor, it works. When I then check the ethernet port and turn it back on, with FCP still running, it continues to work. If, however, I restart the computer with the ethernet checked and turned on, the compressor unable to connect message comes back, and stays there until the computer is restarted with the network port disabled.
This would make sense because not long ago I got my Qwest DSL hooked up and that was probably around the time this problem started happening. For some reason I had no issue when I had my Comcast on. Oh well. So something's definitely funky in the settings.
I"m not a programmer so I did my best with the things the article suggested - some I could figure out, some not so much, but the only thing that seems to help is this network fix.
Not sure if someone posted this article earler or if I just ran across it in my own search - will have to go back and check - but if so, thanks. I need to go back and check the points things on those posts anyway.
I'm at a loss how to fix this any other way. I guess for now I"ll have to either turn the internet off and restart the system before exporting a project, or start the system with the ethernet off and go in and turn the port on manually each time - major pain. But if only I had done this before doing an erase and reinstall! I've been down for weeks going through files, backups to get ready picking at solutions, trying to figure out how to do these fixes. The good side of this is that 1) those files needed to be backed up anc cleaned out anyway, 2) It made me pay attention to the fact that I've been sloppy about my backup system, and 3) I now know how to erase and reinstall and it's not such a scary prospect. So if something happened in the future and it required that, I'm now more prepared to handle it and know that as long as things are backed up well, the computer's not going to smoke and blow up under those circumstances. =)
Does it seem odd to anyone that I would do an erase and reinstall, boot up FCP, and it would remember my settings and send up a reminder that my firewire drive is missing? It appears that every other thing in the system is new.
After all the main software is reinstalled, I'll mess with some system updates and QT updates to see how they affect things and update you guys on that.
If anyone can suggest a more complete fix, now that I"ve narrowed it down to a network compatibility issue, please let me know. Thanks

  • Firefox has suddenly stopped connecting on one of three user accounts on the same computer. That account still connects with Safari - but not Firefox. A clean-install has not solved the problem. Help?

Three user accounts on the same computer all link to a single copy of Firefox 3.6.8 - but one of them has suddenly lost its ability to use the program. Firefox opens in that account, but it cannot connect to the Internet. 'Done' appears at the lower left of a blank Firefox page [it's set to load a blank page initially], as though a page had finished downloading ... but Firefox does not actually generate any Internet activityx.
Previously, the Firefox connection for this account was smooth and reliable. I haven't added, upgraded or downloaded any new programs, nor made any other computer changes in recent weeks or months.
Puzzlingly - that same account still connects successfully to the Internet via Safari. And the other accounts on the same computer continue to use Firefox with no problem - including a test user-account that I set up today to help troubleshoot the problem. The blockage is restricted solely to Firefox with that one user account.
Following your Support page instructions, I did a clean-install of Firefox 3.6.8, removing both the existing Firefox 3.6.8 and the Library/Application Support/Firefox folder. Going the extra mile, I checked all accounts to be certain that no Firefox folders remained in any of them - then emptied the Trash and restarted before installing a freshly downloaded 3.6.8. But blimey - the blockage still persists for that one user account.
Firefox shows no visible cookies that might influence the connection. [It's set to delete all cookies upon closing anyway.] And I see no obvious instructions in Mac's firewall or any software program to refuse access to Firefox. The computer is stand-alone, not networked. And in any case, Firefox works just fine in the two other user accounts.
Deleting the hobbled user account is not feasible. So what is causing this roadblock? Did I miss a step in the clean-install? How can that account resume using Firefox?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

If files already have been downloaded then remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You can also delete active-update.xml and possibly updates.xml (stores the update history).

  • Proper reinstallation of catalog, settings and files after clean installing W7

    Hi,
I'm clean installing windows 7 (I've had it with Vista) and would like to know what is the best procedure and the logistics involved for the transfer/restoration of my catalog.
I will have a large, clean secondary hard drive available (being formatted as we speak) to store anything needed before reformatting and installing W7 in my primary drive.
    Here are the specifics:
    I'm using PSE8
My photos (13,000 pics) are properly organized in folders inside the "Pictures" folder within my User using Vista's default folder structure and would like to preserve this same arrangement under W7 (basically restoring to the Pictures folder in W7.
I have only one Catalog and is only accesible only to me (as opposed to the "accesible to everyone" option).
I would also like to preserve my address book and preferences, but don't know where ae these files located.
My planned windows-related workflow is as follows (suggestions welcome):
    1. Make a simple copy of C: dirve to the 2nd hard drive (about 400GB worth of stuff) just to have an accesible backup of all files.
    2. Use the easy transfer wizard to transfer all windows user's settings and files (from all four users) to the 2nd drive.
and then use the wizard to restore everything after installing W7.
    3. Do a backup of my PSE catalog using the backup feature of the Organizer. Recent second backup is safely stored off-site.
    4. Do the same for my itunes library (research pending on the proper procedure).
    5. Reformat hard drive and then clean-install W7.
    6. Use easy tranfer wizard to restore files and settings.
    7. Install all programs.
    8. Restore PSE catalog using the restore feature in PSE.
    9. manually copy back the address book and preferences to their proper folders... please tell me where these folders are going to be located
    Questions:
What is the proper way to do the transfer my photos and Catalog file?
Should I use the PSE8 backup and restore?
If so, what will happen with the photos already restored by the Windows wizard? should I delete them and let the PSE restore procedure "legally" restore all my pictures and catalog file? This is my big question.
I will very much appreciate all your help and sujjestions with this procedure

can go for PSE back up and restore . It will work for your large catalogs and images

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

  • I cannot connect to the login page of my banking websites for Firefox but can from IE also firefox does not close when I shut it down I have just done a clean instal of windowsws7 and teh problem persists on reinstall of FF3.6.13

I can connect with my banking websites but the login page will not come up. This is a recent occurrence and I have done virus scans and have also recently done a clean instal of Windows 7. The problem persists. I can connect to any other website with no problems. When I close FF it appears to close and Task manager shows as not running but it will not reopen. If I attempt to uninstall I am told that FF is running and needs to be closed. I have to reboot to get to close and be able to reopen.
I can connect to the bank sites with IE. However I really don't like IE.
I am using Win7 Professional on a Sony notebook VGN SZ55

I don't have an answer, but I experienced the same problems trying to set up an airport express to route traffic to my stereo.
Apple Extreme router, iMac and laptop all worked just fine for months, upon installing Airport Express (step by step, according to instructions), all **** broke loose. Airport Utility was unable to see my Airport Extreme router, after hours of rebooting computer, cable modem, router, and finally a hard reset of the Airport Extreme router, it is finally recognized by Airport Utility again.
Recreated network, iMac connects to the internet just fine, laptop (Macbook Air) connects to the network just fine, but will not connect to the internet. Network diagnostics does not help, it gets to the "do you have a router? If so, reboot" stage, and never seems to see the router.
    Any suggestions?

  • Satellite Pro P100 (PSPA4E) - No Sound Following Win 7 Clean Install

Hello, A European friend really struggling and looking for help.
I have just clean installed Win 7 Home Premium (64 bit) on a Satellite Pro P100 (PSPA4E) which was purchased in November 2006. It was previously running XP and I never installed Vista though the laptop is badged Vista Capable) I followed the Win 7 bios/driver/software install order but I now have no sound at all. Everything that I have tried so far has failed to fix it.
The laptop has a Conexant based audio solution with harman kardon speakers. Win 7 has installed the following driver which reports the following info.

There is a second exclamation mark in Device Manager for a further unknown device / uninstalled driver (showing code 28) for a device with a Hardware ID of ACPI\SMCB000 but I do not know what this device is!
Does anyone have any suggestions on a fix for my sound issue?
    Thanks!

Any one have any thoughts on this issue?
I have failed to locate a working / compatible Windows 7 x64 driver for Conexant HD Audio!
    Perhaps there isn't one?
Perhaps I need to try harder?!?
Perhaps the on board sound solution featuring Conexant HD Audio is simply ****** as on www.conexant.com they say manufacturers have TOLD them NOT to make drivers available (... to poor unfortunate users)!!!
I think that manufacturers need to step up to the plate and support / help their customers.  I own 4 Satellite Pro laptops running Vista x32 and Windows 7 x64. This one cost me well over £1,200 so I don't want to hear or conclude that it is simply scrap!  That would represent truly poor value for money - the kind of business case that would undermine my belief that Toshiba laptops are the best in the business.
Ditto Microsoft - the Windows 7 x64 Upgrade Advisor tool gave me the all clear to upgrade this system.  All generally appears fine EXCEPT the lack of sound.
Having now been exposed to the experience of many other laptop owners set out in various forums etc, covering both Toshiba laptops and some other major brands, I have to conclude that the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor is flawed and that a successful upgrade is somewhat hit and miss affair.  Beware!
That said, still hopeful that someone out there will be able to help me fix this issue?

On Oracle Metalink site, there are many documents which says that Oracle 32 bit software works on 32 bits OS and 64 bits software works on 64 bits OS. Official support is only in those combination....
So there is no good way to help you in your case-XE is 32 bit application with hard codded compiled libraries which most of them would not work on 64 bit OS.

  • IPhoto won't open after clean install followed by Time Machine restoration of data.

    Hello.
I've just completed a clean install of OS X Yosemite followed by a restoration of my data from a Time Machine backup on my Mid 2010 iMac i3 3.2GHz.
Since the install iPhoto will no longer open. The icon in the dock bounces for a short while and then I receive the following error: iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. It then shows problem details and system configuration, the top part of which I post below:

I then get a long list of binary image data which I haven't posted here (but can if required).
I believe the version of iPhoto I have is 9.6 as that update was installed a short while before I did the clean install of the OS.
I would try reinstalling the iPhoto again but cannot see a way to uninstall or to download again from the app store.
Has anybody seen this behaviour before and/or know of a fix or workaround so I can get my iPhoto program working again please?
    Many thanks for your time.
    Alex

Looking at that report I would reinstall iPhoto as a first step:
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Mavericks clean install - WiFi won't connect

    2012 Macbook Pro with Retna
I performed a clean install of 10.9 Mavericks and now my home WiFi will not connect.
I am able to connect to the hotspot on my phone, and I can connect to the wifi at work.
2 iPads, 2 iPhones, and 3 windows laptops connect fine.
Windows 8.1 in Boot Camp connects fine.
In Mavericks, while it is attempting to authenticate I can open a web page. Network Prefrences will show an IP address while attempting to authenticate, but it goes away after 30 seconds or so, then I get the message that the Wi-Fi network requires a password and the IP is gone.
As I say, the other devices all connect fine. I have cleared them from the devices and re-joined, so I know the password works.
I know the hardware is good because Windows in Boot Camp connects fine.

Dug into the discussion posts a bit more and found this solution that worked for me in case anyone else is having the same issue: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23478218#23478218
I booted up in safe mode, created a new network connection, logged into my wifi, reboot my MAC... then bam! It works. I'm connected to wifi again! Lesson learned.... wait for Apple to work out the kinks before upgrading. :-)

  • Can't set up wifi or ethernet connection after clean installing XP

Hi, I recently done a clean install of XP on a friends Toshiba Equim M50-164 PSM57E laptop using instructions from this link.
    http://www.easydesksoftware.com/I386.htm
I am now having extreme difficulty setting up the wifi internet connection, no wireless icon is appearing in the bottom right of screen. I tried downloading Atheros Wireless LAN Adapter 7.7.0.406.2 onto an external drive then transferring it to the Toshiba laptop but still it will not work.
It seems the drivers are not installing properly and are not showing up in Device Manager, nor can I connect to the internet using a usb cable.
Please help as my friend is extremely angry and I am now at a loss what to do.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Clean Install of OS X Lion Wi-Fi Connection Help!

Hi, I am at a university that only offers a secure WPA2 Enterprise wireless network and I'm using a macbook pro (mid 2009 model). I've been having a lot of problems with my mac, and have done a lot of research, so I have decided to do a completely clean install of OS X Lion. I have created my own home-made Lion usb drive, but I on my first go around trying to wipe my hard drive and install I ran into some connectivity issues with my network. I would be asked for my username and password, then after I logged in, a window would appear asking about the validity of some certificate related to my wireless network. I tried every option but got no where, I was wondering if anyone may know whats going on or how I can work around this problem?

It sounds as if you have WPA or WPA2 Enterprise Security setup.  That uses a RADIUS server for managing access.  The RADIUS server should present a certificate to you to verify that you are in fact using the correct server for authentication.  If you are using the correct server, then you should accept the certificate.  It sounds like the certificate was not signed by a valid certificate authority, maybe it was self-signed by the university?

  • How to read re-installed documents following a Clean Install( Mac Xv10.4.3)

Per Apple Store advice, I performed a Clean Install on my IMAC 600, OS Xv104.3.
I backed-up (first time user) using LaCie d2 Hard Drive 160GB, then re-installed the saved documents on the IMAC hard drive.
Attempting to open the re-installed documents, i get a warning window: "System Profiler can not open files in System Profiler format".
I am missing something simple here. Appreciate advice.

When I go to File and Get Info which indicates that the Application opening the document is System Profiler, then change to TextEdit the document is opened in what appears to be code. How to I proceed? Thanks.

But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.
The follow are the latest entries into my system log file, after I lost connection to the internet, and then regained connection after rebooting my cable modem:

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!?  BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.

Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
    12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4
After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?
