Convert a Number to time in Oracle

Hi,
In a oracle database table i have a colum that gives the value from 0 to 2359. I want to convert Number to time in Oracle. Any i dea on the query for this.
I have tried
SELECT TO_CHAR('2342','HH:MI') "Time"
FROM dual;
but it is not functioning.
Thanks

The Number that i want to convert to Time is of the
columns of the same table and depending on its value,
i want to display it as Time.
Thanks,Well it sounds like you certainly have no clue what you are doing whatsoever. I predict a bright future for you.
Here's some advice. If the column should have a date or time in it then use a date or time type column. If you are creating a variable data type column then ASAP get a book on SQL before you fuck things up worse then you have.
There is no great mystery here. There is the right way (as suggested by WorkForFood) and there is the wrong way (whatever you are doing). So do what WorkForFood told you or just go away because nobody cares to help make a disaster.

  • Write number in words (using Oracle)

    Hello
    Can you please advise how to convert a number to word in Oracle?
    I am aware of using following but this has limitation of using number till 5373484
    select to_char(to_date('2013', 'j'), 'jsp') as "Date in Words" from dual
    Thanks in advance,
    Tinku

    Hi, Tinku,
    See this Tom Kyte page. It shows how to insert "billion", "trillion" etc. into the strings that 'Jsp' provides. Basically, you only have to spell the first thousand numbers, that is, up to 3 digits. The next 3 digits just repeat the pattern, with "thousand" appended to the end. The 3 digits after that just repeat the pattern again, with "million" concatenated, the 3 digits after that have "billion" (at least in the USA), and so on.
    The same page also shows spelling functions for French and Portuguese.

  • Convert time to number and number to time

    I'm using SAP 4.0b
    I'm looking for function that converts time to number and number to time.
    Any suggestion?

    Hi,
    Can you give an example of what number you want to give to get what time and vice-versa?
    There can be a direct conversion between an integer and a time variable in ABAP.
    For example -
    data: number type i,
          time type syuzeit.
    number = 3600.
    move number to time.
    write time.
    The time will be output as "01:00:00". That is because 3600 seconds make up one hour.

  • CONVERT function in SQL Server to oracle

    Regards,
    ~ORA

    You cannot specify the precision/scale or length of input paramters to a stored procedure in Oracle, or at least the pl/sql engine does not respect the sizing. Assuming that you want to do something with variable1 in the procedure, and not just return it, the Oracle equivalent would be something along the lines of:
    SQL> CREATE FUNCTION f (p_param1 IN VARCHAR2,
      2                     p_param2 IN NUMBER,
      3                     p_param3 IN NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER IS
      4     l_var1 NUMBER(20) := SUBSTR(p_param1, p_param2, p_param3);
      5  BEGIN
      6     RETURN l_var1 * 10;
      7  END;
      8  /
    Function created.
    SQL> SELECT f('ABC10DEF', 4, 2) FROM dual;
    F('ABC10DEF',4,2)
                  100You may need to adjust the return type to match what you are actually returning.
    You can also use this iin a direct assignment in pl/sql without doig a select, something like:
    SQL> DECLARE
      2     l_num NUMBER(20);
      3  BEGIN
      4     l_num := f('ABC10DEF', 4, 2);
      5     DBMS_OUTPUT.Put_Line('The number is: '||l_num);
      6  END;
      7  /
    The number is: 100John

  • Convert XMP Date and Time

    Hi, in my script I am trying to read the Date and Time using the XMP functions of a selected file in bridge.  Then, I want to convert that date and time into a format that looks like: "01/12/10 | 01:23 PM" and write that to another metadata field like the description.  Im stuck on trying to convert the date and time into what I want it to look like?  Can anyone help, thanks!
    Here is the part of the code I'm having trouble with:
    When I read the dateTimeOriginal property of the file, it is in an unfriendly format.  It looks odd and shows the time zone.  The commented lines is code that I have tried, but didn't work.  I was trying to convert the XMPDateTime object into a Date object so I can adjust the format, but I haven't been successful.
    var myXmpFile = new XMPFile( selectedFile.fsName, XMPConst.UNKNOWN, XMPConst.OPEN_FOR_UPDATE);
          var myXmp = myXmpFile.getXMP();
          var Name = myXmp.getProperty(XMPConst.NS_EXIF, "DateTimeOriginal");
          var date = new XMPDateTime(new Date(Name));
          var date2 = new Date(date);
          //dateFormat.masks.portfolioDate = 'mm/dd/yy "|" hh:MM TT';
    //date.format("portfolioDate");
    //date2.format("mm/dd/yy");
    alert(date2.toString());
    Name.convertToLocalTime();
    Name.toString();
    alert(Name);

    Thanks for helping me out Paul.  I just have one more small problem.  I am trying to access the Headline XMP property, and I know i need to use the IPTC Core property, but it doesn't seem to work.  Here is my current code, can you help me out?
    var selectedFile = thumb.spec;
    var myXmpFile = new XMPFile( selectedFile.fsName, XMPConst.UNKNOWN, XMPConst.OPEN_FOR_UPDATE);
    var myXmp = myXmpFile.getXMP();
    var xmpString = myXmp.getProperty(XMPConst.NS_EXIF, "DateTimeOriginal").toString();
                alert(xmpString);
    var xmpString2 = myXmp.getProperty(XMPConst.NS_IPTC_CORE, "Headline").toString();
    alert(xmpString2);
    var dat =xmpString.match(/(\d+).(\d+).(\d+).(\d+).(\d+).(\d+)/);
    var amOrPm = "AM";
    var hours = Number(dat[4]);
    if (hours > 11) amOrPm = "PM";
    if (hours > 12) hours = hours - 12;
    if (hours > 11) amOrPm = "PM";
    if (hours < 10) hours = '0' + hours;
    var dateString = dat[2]+"/"+dat[3]+"/"+dat[1].substr (2) +" | "+ hours +':'+dat[5]+ ' ' +amOrPm;

  • Calculate the number of times a character appears in a string

    Please help.
    Is there a way to count a number of occurences of a particular character in a string? e.g. If you have 'DATABASE' as a string, can you calculate the number of times 'A' occurs in it? The answer is supposed to be 3, but can you calculate it in Oracle?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Essbase 9.3 Calc scripts. Pb with dates. How to convert (string = number) ?

    Hello,
    I've a problem with Essbase(Planning?) Scripts on version 9.3. It looks simple but I do not find any (clean) solution :
    On my Essbase database, I have a member called "Reference_Date" on my axis Indicators. It is a date data type, that is to say, it displays a number corresponding to a YYYYMMDD format. For example : 20091029 for October 29th 2009.
    In calc scripts I often need to compare the month included in that "Reference_Date" with the current Member of my Time Axis (I have 12 Months members based on the format M02 for February for example). The final aim is to calculate a number of complete years since that "Reference_Date".
    But theses two elements are not of the same "type" (one is a number value and the other is a "member" in Time Axis). So I'm forced to convert one of this two elements in order to compare it.
    For example I can extract the month value of the "Reference_Date"' and put an "M" before it to have a Time member equivalent or I can convert the member Name M10 to a number (10))
    in both cases I have the same type problem : I don't know how to convert a string into a number nor how to convert a number into a string.
    (For example @CONCATENATE doesn't work with numbers). and that my only remaining problem.
    I didn't find any Essbase Function which do this (conversion number <=>string).
    Is anyone have an Idea ?
    Thanks for your help
    Best regards

    I don't know any way for you to compare your data against your metadata. Not directly. To me it makes little enough sense to try that I'm not surprised the developers didn't provide for it.
    I've converted member names to strings, manipulated the strings (calc script functions are not good at this), and turned them back into member names, but that's really the only use I've had for string manipulation. I don't think an equivalency operator even exists for string data. And I see no way to begin thinking of a member name, once converted to a string, as a number.
    It makes even less sense to me to try thinking of a data value as a string. Even text values in Sys 11 are stored as numbers. Not encoded characters, but just a number to look up somewhere.
    I think you can do what you want though, with something like this...
    IF (@ISMBR("FY08"))
    vYr = 2008;
    ELSEIF (@ISMBR("FY09"))
    vYr = 2009;
    ENDIF;
    IF (@ISMBR("M01"))
    vMth = 1;
    ELSEIF (@ISMBR("M02"))
    vMth = = 2;
    ENDIF;
    "Years_Since_Reference" = ((vYr * 100) + Mth) - ("Reference_Date" / 12);
    Obviously, the math will need some work, coz that doesn't actually work, but the logic above essentially turns your metadata into numbers, which is what you are after.
    Good luck,

  • Is 000001010000z a valid date time in Oracle?

    Hi,
    When working with Open LDAP connection from Oracle, I need to set and remove the value '000001010000z' for locking and unlocking the user account respectively. This is working fine. However, for some calculation, I need to convert this value as a date value which I couldn't do. Is this a valid date time in Oracle? If so how to convert it as a date value.
    Oracle version: 10g R2
    Thanks,
    Natarajan

    Thanks, Mithun for your answer. We have the same issue, as an user, we can lock an account using the special value, but unable to unlock using the same user. I have reported this to our LDAP administrator.
    Regarding my question using this special value as a date value in oracle, though it is a valid date in the LDAP system, we cannot convert this as a date value in Oracle.

  • Setting Correct Time in Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition

    If I run a SQL command Select sysdate from dual, it shows the date correctly, but the time is one hour ahead. How can I correct this?

    Jim,
    I'm not sure how to change the time permanently. I don't know if you're in the wrong time zone or what, but I know how to display it correctly:
    First, set your nls_date_format to show the hour, etc.(you may set this to permanent instead of just for the session:
    SQL>ALTER SESSION SET NLS_DATE_FORMAT = 'DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS';
    SQL>SELECT NEW_TIME(SYSDATE, 'CST', 'CDT')
    1> FROM DUAL;
    The new_time() function accepts and requires 3 parameters. The first being a date and time, the second being the time zone the first parameter belongs in, and the last parameter being the time zone you would like to convert to. Each time zone is abbreviated in the following way: XST or XDT, where S or D stands for standard or daylight saving time, and where X stands for the first letter of the time zone (such as Atlantic, Bering, Central, Eastern, Hawaii, Mountain, Newfoundland, Pacific, or Yukon. There are two exceptions: Greenwich mean time is indicated by GMT, while Newfoundland standard time does not use daylight saving. This is in the Oracle 8i Certified Professional DBA Certification Exam Guide page 48.
    Hope this helps,
    Rob
