Converting contents of a file to String

Hi,
I need to read a pdf file and obtain its contents in the form of a String; pass this string to a method which will recreate this file in pdf format (this is a requirement).
How can this be done ?
I tried using RandomAccessFile but the output file is not a proper pdf format (it shows an error on opening).
If i purely work on the byte stream level (i.e. use a byte array instead of a String representation of the input file), the output file is of a proper pdf format and i am able to open it successfully.
Also i tried first obtaining a byte array and then converting it to a String by passing it to the String constructor i.e.
String fileStr = new String(byte[] fileBytes);and then i pass this string to the method and if that method tries to obtain the byte array from this String and create the output pdf file, i again am not able to open this file.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

How can this be done ?It cannot be done safely unless you are willing to use something like Base64 or Hex encoding but I suspect this is not what you want.

    i'm writting a java program to use xslt to transform the xml file. i'm encountering the problem when i try to convert the xslt file into string. i've defined my utility class called 'XmlUtil' to carry out the operation of transform xml file through xslt. but in my main java program i need to convert both xml and xslt file into a string in order to input them in my function argument. my function argument is as follows:

    i've already converted xmlcontent into string by using:

    I don't understand why you need load the XML and XLS files into a String. A Transformer can be constructed from a Source and there is a StreamSouce which can be constructed from an InputStream. The transform() method can take a Source as input and can produce a Result. There is no need to go near a String representation of either the input.

  • How to save the contents of a file(not a text file)

    Hi all, I want to save the contents of a file(,png file, not a text file) as a field in a class. Shall I have it as a string or byte array or something?
    I have tried saving a file in a string but there were some problems with loading the file from a different platform. Following is my code.
            String string;
            try {
                StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer(1024);
                char[] characterArray = new char[1024];
                BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file));
                while(br.read(characterArray) != -1){
                    sb.append(String.valueOf(characterArray));
                br.close();
                string= sb.toString();
            } catch (IOException ex) {
                ex.printStackTrace();
            }and I use the following code to recover the string back to a stream, and save that stream back to a time later.
        ByteArrayInputStream bais = new ByteArrayInputStream(map.getBytes());I realized that because this file is not a text file, the string could cause some problems. But anyone could tell me if I should use a byte array or someting? and how?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Jing

    You should use a byte array, and the binary streams (InputStream a& OutputStream). Never use Strings and Reader/Writer if you have binary data.

  • How to create a xls file from String [ ][ ]

    Hi, I have a java class where I can read the content of files xls and store this information in a String [][].
    But now, I have to do the opposite.
    I have a String[][] where the information is. And I have to guard this information in a file xls.
    My code when I read xls to String[][] is:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.io.File;
    import jxl.Workbook;
    import jxl.Sheet;
    import jxl.Cell;
    import jxl.*;
    public class ReadfichExcel
        private static int numCols;
        private static int numRows;
    public static String[] dimensionFile(String pathFolder, String file){
        String [] dimension = new String[2];
        try{
            Workbook libro = Workbook.getWorkbook(new File(pathFolder+"/"+file));
            Sheet hoja = libro.getSheet(0);
            numRows = hoja.getRows();
            numCols = hoja.getColumns();
        catch (Exception e)
            e.printStackTrace();
            return null;
        dimension[0] = String.valueOf(numRows);
        dimension[1] = String.valueOf(numCols);
        return dimension;
    }How can I do to create a file xls with the information of a String [] []?
    Thanks very much

    I have solved the problem:
    http://www.andykhan.com/jexcelapi/tutorial.html#writing
    What do you want to do then? Do you want to read the contents of the Excel file into the array?I only wanted to create a xls file with the information I have in a String[][]. The code I posted before is the code I ussually use to read a xls file.
    Next to create and write a xls file I'd do:
    public static int CreateTemp (File folderUser, String file, String [][] table)
        int exito = 0;
        int rows = table.length;
        int cols = table[0].length;
        if (!folderUser.exists())
            folderUser.mkdir();
        try
            WritableWorkbook libro = Workbook.createWorkbook(new File(folderUser+"/"+file));
            WritableSheet hoja = libro.createSheet("First Sheet",0);
            // BEGIN TO WRITE
            for (int i=0;i<rows;i++)
                for (int j=0; j<cols;j++)
                    Label label = new Label(j, i, table[i][j]);
                    hoja.addCell(label);
            }// FOR
            // All sheets and cells added. Now write out the workbook
            libro.write();
            libro.close();
            exito = 1;
        } catch (Exception e)
                e.printStackTrace();
                return 0;
        return exito;
    }Another question. As I want to copy into the xls file the information in the String[][], Is right to do this using as follow:
    Label label = new Label(j, i, table[i][j]);
    hoja.addCell(label); (there will be characters and numbers in the cells)
    Thanks for your response.

    thanks masijade,
    i have filter the file chooser for only text files,
    but i still don't know how to use FileReader to put text file content to the text area (ta) ..
    please tell me how and where to use it..How? -- See the IO Tutorials on Sun for the FileReader (and I assume you know how to call setText and append in the JTextArea).
    Where? -- In the actionPerformed method (better would be a separate thread that is triggered through the actionPerformed method, but that is probably beyond you at the moment), of course.
    Give it a try.

  • Converting hexadecimal XML data to a string

    Hello!
    Until now I generated XML data with the FM 'SDIXML_DOM_TO_XML'.
    After that I did a loop over the xml_as_table in which I was casting each line of that table to a string.
    ASSIGN <line> TO <line_c> CASTING.
    After the inftroduction of unicode in our system I get a error:
    In the current program an error occured when setting the field symbol <LINE_C> with ASSIGN or ASSIGNING (maybe in combination with the CASTING addition).
    When converting the base entry of the field symbol <LINE_C> (number in base table: 32776), it was found that the target type requests a memory alignment of 2
    What does it mean? Does somebody have a solution.
    I need this function for sending this XML data as string over a simple old CPIC connection.
    Best regards
    Martin

    Hello Martin
    Perhaps my sample report ZUS_SDN_XML_XSTRING_TO_STRING provides a solution for your problem.

  • How to use automator to convert text to audio file

    I have a MS Word file which I would like to convert to an audio file using the text to audio file script available in automator. Forgive my ignorance but I am having difficulty in finding how to do this.
    Can anyone give me a step by step approach.
    Thanks
    Alain

    One way:
    1. Get Selected Finder Items
    2. Open Finder Items
    --Open with: TextEdit
    3. Get Contents of TextEdit Document
    4. Text to Audio File

  • What is the best way to merge a file content into log file

    What is the best way to merge a file content into log file.
    In worst case, I will read the file line by line as string, then use
    logger.info(lineString)to output to log file.
    However, is there better way to do this?
    The eventual log file will be something like:
    log message 1
    log message 2
    content from file line 1
    content from file line 2
    content from file line 3
    log message 3
    log message 4Thanks

    Thank you and let me explain:
    1. What do you mean by better?
    I would like to see better performance. read line by line and log each line as string can be slow. Did you measure this and determine that it is actually a problem for your application? Or are you guessing?
    Regardless of what you do you are still going to need to read the file.

    2.The only better way I can think of is not having to do it, but I assume you have a very good reason to want to do this.
    Yes, I have to do it beacuse the requirement is to have that file content be part of logging.
    Any idea?How is it supposed to be part of it? For example which of the following is better?
            File AAA - contents
                       First Line
                       Second Line XXX
            Log 1
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random preceding line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: First Line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Second Line XXX
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random following line
            Log 2
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random preceding line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: ----- File: AAA -------------
                    First Line
                    Second Line XXX
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random following lineBoth of the above have some advantages and disadvantages.
    The first in a mult-threaded app can end up with intermittent log entries in between lines, so having log lines with thread ids becomes important.
    The first can be created by reading one line at a time and posting one at a time.
    The second can be created by reading the entire file as a single string and then posting using a single log statement.
