Converting HTML Forms to PDF - Field Names

When I use Adobe 8 to convert and HTML form to PDF all the field names in the resulting PDF have the crazy long names that are jumble of letters and numbers. So I always have to go back through and manually rename every field because I'm using another program to autopopulate the fields with data. Is there any way to get Acrobat to automatically name the fields in the PDF the same as they are named in the form either using the "name" or "id" properties of the HTML fields? I don't understand why this isn't the default behaviour to begin with.

The reason this is done is due to a fundamental difference between HTML forms and Acrobat forms. In HTML forms, fields with the same name do not necessarily share the same value, whereas in Acrobat forms they do.
In the conversion process, Acrobat gives each field a unique name, but also sets a field's mapping name to the name the field had in the original HTML form. This is so that if the PDF form is used to submit as "HTML", then the original field names will be used and any server process that is capable of dealing with the HTML form is capable of dealing with the resulting PDF form. So be aware that if you want to use your modified form to submit to a web server using the "HTML" format, the new field names that you set will not be used. What will be used are the hidden mapping names.
Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything you can do about any of this to make it work like you want.

    Hi EdAAK,
    I've checked your account, and see no issues with your subscription. So, if you're using a web browser, please log out, clear the browser cache, and then log back in to https://cloud.acrobat.com. But i got a error when i am using that FM.
    Runtime Errors         CONVT_NO_NUMBER
    unable to interpret *292 as a no.
    Is that because my file size too large about 13 pages of PDF?
    and when i run it for other smart forms which have 2 or 3 pages of PDF, its working perfectly.
    can anyone tell what is problem with that FM?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I had the similar issue and after analysis I have that this is the issue by not passing the IMPORTING parameter of the Function Module "BIN_FILESIZE". Please try to pass some variable to this paramter and then this will be completely rectified.

  • Combing PDF forms with identical field names while retaining unique values.

    I have several PDF files of the same form that has been filled out by multiple users. I need to create a combined file of all the responses for reporting purposes. However, the forms (obviously) all have the same field names, and when I combine them the values of the first form autofill the values of the matched fields on the other forms. I need a way to combine the forms while retaining the unique field values. I thought I could write a js to rename the fields, but that isn't possible.
    *EDIT: The fields need to retain editability because some contain long, scrolling text. Flattening or read-only isn't an option, not that either fixes the above problem.
    Suggestions?

    UPDATE:
    I solved this problem, at least for my own needs. Following try67's advice in a related post, I had to delete the existing fields and create new ones with new names. Given my desired outcome, this meant collecting all of the field properties of the fields (with some variation by field type), storing it, erasing the existing fields, and using that stored information to create new, identical fields (again with some variation by field type). Since I didn't want to retain actions or javascript, this was a perfect solution. I also no longer needed the buttons to function (since I wasn't retaining their javascript), so I made them read-only. I'm listing my working code below, in case anyone else could benefit from some or all of it.
    My question to the community is this: Why doesn't Adobe allow for fields to be renamed via javascript? Is it a security issue? My life would have been a lot easier the last few days if I could simply rename existing fields.
    The following script is used in a Combine Files action via the Action Wizard. The PDF optimizer is also used to strip out or flatten additional items.
    //This script is used to rename all the fields in a document while also removing any javascript or actions associated with those fields. Makes buttons read only without renaming.

  • How to convert an HTML form to PDF

    Is there any way to convert HTML page (with text boxes,radio/submit buttons) into a PDF file so form can be entered in a PDF format??

    You can use OpenOffice.org, running as a server and command it remotely for document convertion.
    Besides HTML to PDF, there are also possible other convertions:
    doc --> pdf, html, txt, rtf
    xls --> pdf, html, csv
    ppt --> pdf, swf
    Code example:
    import officetools.OfficeFile; // this is my tools package
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(new File("c:/test.html"));
    FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(new File("c:/test.pdf"));
    // suppose OpenOffice.org runs on localhost, port 8100
    OfficeFile f = new OfficeFile(fis,"localhost","8100", true);
    f.convert(fos,"pdf");

  • Bitmap image won't show after converting HTML file to pdf

    I have a program which saves a technical report as a HTML file. I don't  have another choice as to file type to save as. This program has a  template which generates the report....and there are fields which are  filled in...some text fields, and one is a company logo. Just to be  clear the logo itself is not in the template, a holding place is there  which points to the location of the logo on my drive. This is all set up  by the program and can't be altered.
    If I save the logo as a jpg, png or tiff file, the logo shows up in the  final HTML report and if I use Adobe Professional (version 7.0 on Win XP)  to create a pdf the  image also shows up - a perfect replica of the report is created in pdf,  making it convenient for printing and email.
    If I save the logo as a bitmap file (which creates a higher resolution  and sharper looking logo) the logo shows up in the initial HTML  technical report, but when I convert this to pdf the file is not found,  instead it shows as a small square red box with the error "Bad file  image" or "unable to download image".
    I can't understand why this would be the case as the logo is saved in  the same location whether it is jpg, png, tiff or bmp. It just seems  that the Adobe Pro doesn't know how to "find" the bitmap logo from the  HTML template.
    I did try converting the HTML document to Word but it threw the  formatting out and when it was converted to pdf it cropped the page  & I wasn't able to resolve this...maybe it can be done but it is a  long way around in any case, particularly if steps then need to be taken  to correct the formatting.
    At the moment the document can be printed with success from the original  format - then it's a matter of scanning the printed document in order  to email. It can't be emailed directly because of the embedded  information which is lost if then sent to the recipient's computer.  However it would be nice if the doc could be converted to pdf which  would then make it easier to transfer the file to a backup drive or for  email.  Any ideas? Thanks

    Thanks for your response. Yes I did mean .bmp files.
    The problem is not getting it to show in HTML - but Adobe then picking it up from there. I guess though if it is not a standard format for HTML then maybe Adobe has trouble recognising it if it is there. Also, it is possible for Adobe to convert .bmp files if they are inserted in the HTML file, but I have instead a template with the code for the location of the file rather than the graphic itself.  I don't have this problem using the other file formats and getting them into pdf...it's just that the images aren't as sharp as the bmp. I have tried various formats and resolutions so if there isn't a way I can get the bmp from the HTML file into pdf I might just have to live with printing and scanning from the original. Thanks for your input, it confirms what I was thinking. I'll leave this unanswered for now in case someone else has further information.

  • Convert HTML-Spool to PDF

    Hi experts,
    I'm looking for a possibility to conbvert a Spool-request to PDF fomrat.
    Following situation:
    I have a Web Dynpro that creates a page with a few material details. I can now export this to Excel, but now the requeiremt is also to convert it to PDF.
    We don't have ADS, so I can't use Adobe forms. First, I tried to create a Smartform and convert this to PDF which will work. But I have also a few pictures included which come from a Web Service (as JPG). After searchin a while I found a possibilty to convert them to TIF and insert them in SE78 automatically. But this takes to much time and as a result of insert them to SE78, the colors will change (only 256 colors).
    Next idea was to generate a HTML-Mail out of my Smartform (regaring this blog /people/pavan.bayyapu/blog/2005/08/30/sending-html-email-from-sap-crmerp) what works perfectly now.
    So now I have a Spool in SOST which contains a HTML file. OK, looks great, all pictures are included, takes not much time - but how to convert this to PDF?
    Anybody any ideas?

    Hi experts,
    after searching the whole forum and internet, I don't find any solution.
    Maybe the convertion from Spool to PDF is not possible...
    OK, another idea:
    I read that the wrong colors result from the different color depth (16/24 bit vs 256 colors). So my last idea is to convert the image before inserting into BDS (SE78), automatically done by SAP.
    Is there any function/coding you know which can convert me a image from 24bit to 256 colors? If so, I can convert the image and then insert into BDS...

  • Convert XFA form to PDF document

    Within a process, I have form defined as a xfa variable and user can fill it in workspace and also include attachment when submitting the form.
    Then after the form is processed, approved by manager I need to convert it to a pdf(which should contain attachments) and save it to a folder. how can I do that?
    Thanks.

    There is another way but it's a manual process and it's a HACK. Using this process will basically kill any XFA or JS functionality that was in the form previously. So proceed at your own risk...
    Use a tool that can view and edit the internals of a "static" LiveCycle PDF form (i.e. Windjack's PDFCanOpener).
    Delete the XFA dictionary
    Do a SaveAs to a new form name.
    Close the form
    Re-open the form and then you should be able to edit the form with the Acroform tools.
    Note: This WILL NOT work with dynamic forms.

  • Convert InfoPath form to PDF issues

    Hello,
    We have some web based InfoPath forms hosted in a MOSS 2007 SharePoint environment. Users who have Acrobat professional installed on their computers are having problems converting the forms when using the Adobe PDF Toolbar in IE. There are two problems that the users are seeing.
    First, individual text fields appear to black out the field. If the user selects the highlight fields option in Reader or Acrobat when they open the saved PDF, then the fields are no longer blacked out. It looks like the conversion is interperating the background color of the fields to be black. On the form there is no background color for the fields.
    The second issue some users are experiencing is that the converted PDF looks to cut off the right side of the form, or throws off the layout of the form (table columns are shifted). The table shifting issue is probably related to the InfoPath form layout, but the cut off issue seems a bit odd. For most users the form scales to fit on the PDF page, but some users get a cut off form.
    Has anyone seen either of these issues before, or found a resolution for either? Thank you ahead of time for any assistance.

    Infopath forms contain multiple components. The InfoPath .xsn file defines the data structure, appearance, and behavior of finished forms (.xml files).
    To properly convert I would suggest using LiveCycle Designer (not the Web Capture in Acrobat). Designer will convert your .xsn file and extract the necessary components.

    Just saw this topic on the forum,
    For each web crawlers the web sites maintain a file called Robots.txt which can be assessed by : http://www.google.co.uk/robots.txt
    You would see following on that file :
    User-agent: *
    Allow: /searchhistory/
    Disallow: /search
    Disallow: /groups
    which means that crawlers are not allowed to scrap this site on search, due to which our code wasnt working

  • Dynamic form... field names and values...

    Boy-Howdy. I wish I had the opportunity to stop by this forum and hang out at a time when I am not having issue, but, alas... I appreciate the brain power of the great minds that populate this forum.
    I have an issue: I think I am close on this but cannot identify where my syntax is going awry. Here is a simplified edition of my situation.
    I have a form with a set of dropdown menus that filter a recordset. The group of drop downs are dynamic from a database and will vary depending on what category of products a visitor is viewing.
    If I browse to FRUIT: I get three options that let me filter for:
    Fruit Type
    - Apples
    - Bananas
    - Pears
    Fruit Grown By:
    - Organic
    - Any
    Fruit From:
    - Domestic
    - South America
    - European
    However, if I browse to LUMBER I get:
    Wood Type:
    - Pine
    - Walnut
    - Oak

    I have the variable naming and database values worked out. My only issue is when I browse to friuit and select apples I want apples to remain selected as I page through results.
    So, the dropdown field names are dynamic. Currently set to zgen1, zgen2, zgen3. I set a variable named sr and increment it to build the progressive 1,2,3 after the field name zgen.
    <cfparam name="sr" default="1">
    <cfoutput group="ft_id" query="oompa2">
    <strong>#f_ftrname#:</strong><br>
    <select name="zgen#variables.sr#">
    <OPTION value="">select...</OPTION>
    <cfoutput>
    <OPTION value="#ft_id#_#fs_id#">#ft_options#</OPTION>
    </cfoutput>
    </select>
    <br><br>
    <cfset sr=#sr# + 1>
    </cfoutput>
    But when zgen1 has a value (in this case "Apples") I can't figure out how to dynamically test for the presence of a value for each dropdown. I have dynamically created the field names (cfset xvalue="FORM.zgen#variables.sr#") to test against. However this creates a value of FORM.zgen1, FORM.zgen2, FORM.zgen3 as it loops when I want it to be Apples, Organic, Domestic.
    Example:
    The code:
    <OPTION value="#ft_id#_#fs_id#"<cfif xvalue IS "#ft_id#_#fs_id#"> SELECTED</cfif>>#ft_options#</OPTION>
    which is translating to:
    <OPTION value="15_5"<cfif FORM.zgen1 IS "15_5"> SELECTED</cfif>>Apples</OPTION>
    When I want it to be:
    <OPTION value="15_5"<cfif 15_5 IS "15_5"> SELECTED</cfif>>Apples</OPTION>
    I hope I am making sense. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me noodle this. I have a feeling it is not as complicated as my mind is trying to make it. Thoughts?

    Three selects related type code was not the way to go - because I need each filter to be independent. I created a custom tag that argues the state for each separately up to ten filters.

  • How to convert Smart Form into PDF format and return the result in BAPI?

    I want to convert a Smart Form into PDF format and return the result in BAPI.
    can anyone tell me how it can be done with related example
    regards
    pranay

    hi,
    smart form to pdf--
    All you have to do is call your SF to get OTF and then concert it to PDF. Works like charm:
    DATA: p_output_options TYPE ssfcompop,
    p_control_parameters TYPE ssfctrlop.
    p_control_parameters-no_dialog = 'X'.
    p_control_parameters-getotf = 'X'.
    CALL FUNCTION v_func_name "call your smartform
    EXPORTING
    output_options = p_output_options
    control_parameters = p_control_parameters
    IMPORTING
    job_output_info = s_job_output_info.
    call function 'CONVERT_OTF_2_PDF'
    tables
    otf = s_job_output_info-otfdata
    lines = t_pdf
    and if u need more u can check below links also

  • Create HTML Form from PDF Form

    Does anyone know of a quick way to create an HTML Form from an existing PDF Form?
    Thanks everyone!
    mars

    From ID you can export to XHTML which is indeed consumed by DW but not via Acrobat...
    So, can I import a PDF form into ID?
    When I meant was - InDesign can export to XHTML
    Acrobat cannot
    Indeed, it would be great if forms could be created as ID objects and then exported to a PDF form but not yet (all fingers and toes crossed for CS5/CS6)
    Cheers,
    Jon
