Converting MSACCESS into ORACLE Db

HI there,
would anybody happend to know how to convert MS access database into a Oracle Db.
I have heard that it is certainly possible, yet I am not sure how to do it.
Any info woudl be appreciated.
Thanks
Beno

One suggestion - don't use java. Not that java can't do it, but it is going to take a lot less time (but to run and to implement) using existing tools.
Use MS Access to export the data to text files. You get to it via the GUI.
Oracle has a import tool which reads in text files. I believe you need to create a description file. It uses that to figure out what the data looks like in the text file.
I believe that this is also fully explained in the Oracle docs or at least on the Oracle site. They might even have a tool there that does the entire process for you.

I need to import columns and there datas from oracle database to microsoft excel sheet.
Please let me know the different ways for doing this.
    Thanks.

asktom.oracle.com has an excellent article on writing a PL/SQL procedure that dumps data to an Excel spreadsheet-- search for 'Excel' and it'll come up.
You can also use your favorite connection protocol (ODBC, OLE DB, etc) to connect from Excel to Oracle and pull the data out that way.

I have requirement to convert rows into column wise as per the following:
    My Query is:
    WITH t
    AS ( SELECT 'A' AS x, 100 AS y FROM DUAL
    UNION ALL
    SELECT 'B',200 FROM DUAL

So any one could help me that how I resolve this.
    Regards,
    Prasanta

    Dear frank,
    Thanks for your support,.
It's working fine for static cases. If the first column is dynamic then how come i will resolve it.
    Example:
    Create table mytab (ID_C Varchar2(15),Value_N Number);
Records Population into MyTab table is dynamic.
    Insert into mytab values('HO',5000);
    Insert Into mytab values('PG1',2400);
    Insert Into mytab values('PG2',3000);
    Insert Into mytab values('PG3',800);
    Commit;
    SQL> Select * From MyTab;
    IDC_ ValueN_
    HO 5000
    PG1 2400
    PG2 3000
    PG3 800
Then My expected result will be as follows
    HO PG1 PG2 PG3
    5000 2400 3000 800
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Convert  Sql server database into oracle

    hi friends
i have a very smal database of sql server containing 8 tables
i want to convert my databse into oracle plz tell me in detail coz i dont know any thing about it.
    plz help me
    take care
    bye

If the amount of data is small, you might look into Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS), which comes with SQL Server. This provides an easy to use GUI for mapping data between two sources.
    A few warnings:
    - If you let DTS create your Oracle tables, beware that that table / column names may be created as case-sensitive and data types may not be what you expect
    - If you are transferring a lot of data (e.g. millions of rows), performance will be terrible.

  • Converting Single Instance database into Oracle Fail-Safe on Linux

    Hi All,
We have single instance Oracle10g database running on Linux RHEL4. We are looking to convert this database into Oracle Fail-Safe (Active-Passive). Does any one have document for Oracle fail-safe setup?
    Regards,
    Tushar

    Tushar,
you can't use software for windows on Linux.
However, there's number of ways to implement high-availability solution on Linux Oracle.
You can go with Active-Active (RAC) - which means that you'll have two servers attached to the same database at the same time. You can use either, and if one goes down(due to power failure for instance), the second will still be available.
You can go with Active-Passive (Data Guard) - which means that you'll have one of the nodes being active and the second passive, but synchronized with the first one, so in case of failure of the first node you can activate the second one.
You can also go with linux clustering - which is most similar to MCS + fail-safe - you'll have two nodes clustered with linux clustering software (RH cluseter suite for instance) and connected to shared storage. One node is active, and in case of crash database instance will be automatically started on the second node. This is beneficial because you can use your resources more efficiently. In case if you have two databases you can run each of them on dedicated server and then, in case of node failure move to another one. However, the setup of such configuration is quite cumbersome.

  • Convert flat file to XML document and store into Oracle database

    First:
I have a flatfile and created external table to read that file in Oracle
Now I want to create an XML document for each row and insert into Oracle database, I think that XMLtype.
Could you please provide me some information/steps.
    Second:
Is there performance issues, because everyday I need to check that XML document stored in the database against the in coming file.
    Thank You.

    Oracle 11g R2 Sun Solaris
Flat file is | (pipe delimited), so I did create an EXTERNAL Table
    row1     a|1|2|3|4
    row2     b|2|3|4|5
    row3     c|6|7|8|9
I want to store each record as XML document. So it will be easy to compare with next day's load and make insert or update.
    The reason is:
First day the file comes with 5 columns
after some days, the file may carry on some additional columns more than 5
In this case I do not want to alter table to capture those values, if I use XML than I can capture any number of columns, CORRECT!. Please make me correct If I am wrong.
This is the only reason to try to use the XMLType (XML Document)
On Everyday load we will be matching these XML documents and update it if there is any column's value changes
daily average load will be 10 millions and initial setup will be 60-80 millions
Do I have anyother option to capture the new values without altering the table.
    Please advise!.

  • Loading shapefiles into Oracle Spatial

    Fellow Oracle Spatiallers!
Currently we edit Oracle Spatial data by checking data out into a shapefile,
making our changes off-line, and reloading the shapefile back into Oracle.
Instead of using the Oracle Spatial supplied tool, we decided to purchase
a utility called the "Spatial Loader" from a company called Geometry Pty Ltd
(http://www.geometryit.com). There are a number of reasons why we decided to
go that way which might become evident from the command line parameters of
    this utility:
    Usage: Shp2Spt [Arguments] [Options]
    OR
    Usage: Java com.geometryit.spatialloader.oracle.AdvancedJavaSpatialTranslator [Arguments] [Options]
    [Arguments] must specify these values:
    -o create
    type of operation to perform
create creates a new table, must not exist already
recreate creates a new table, may exist already
init drops existing table, creates a new one
append appends data onto existing table
    -f <shape_file>
the shape file or project to translate
    -l <table,column>
target table and column for the geometry data
    -D <database>
    target database name
    -u <username>
    username for RDBMS
    -p <password>
    password for RDBMS
[Options] values are not necessarily required:
    -s <server_name>
    name of server with database
    -port <port_number>
the port to connect to on the server
    -ufi <column_name>
specify the name of the UFI field (unique ID)
    -seq <sequence_name>
specify the sequence to use for the spatial data unique IDs
    -a none
    attributes mode
none no attributes will be transferred
all all attribtues will be transfered as found
file= file containing lines of the form:
    <shape_attribute><space/tab><rdbms_column>
    where
<shape_attribute> selects the column to be output
<rdbms_column> name of the column in RDBMS
    -srid <id>
specify the Spatial Reference ID for the spatial data
(this must be set to use Spatial Reference Transformations)
    -i [<level>] or -i rtree
create an index for the generated table
the <level> parameter is an optional integer
representing the depth of the quadtree created
if rtree is specified, the index created will be
    an rtree
    -c <commit_interval>
number of rows to commit after
    -t <tolerance>
    tolerance value for metadata
    -r none
used to determine number of decimal places to round vertices to
if you use the tolerance-parameter option, specify the -t parameter before -r
    -igc
    ignore geometry collections
    -sgc
    split geometry collections
    -sgd f
split geometry direction [forward | reverse]
    -update-metadata <true/false>
update the Oracle Spatial Metadata table after loading data
    -validate <true/false>
perform Oracle Spatial validation after loading data
    -v
    verbose mode on
    -h or -?

The main things I like about this tool are:
    1. One step (no conversion to sqlloader form followed by a call to the sqlloader).
    2. The ability to round the coordinates of the shapes in the shapefile by applying
the XY tolerance values held in the SDO_GEOM_METADATA table.
This is quite important because our editing package - due to double/single precision
issues - can actually move coordinates but those movements are sub the precision of
the actual data. By rounding to the nominate precision we can detect situations where
no actual change to the shape (and its attributes) was made and thus not create superfluous
    revisions within the database.
    3. It will correctly re-wind the coordinates of the outer/inner shells of polygons. This is
important as ESRI shapefiles are agnostic on the winding order: an outer shell coordinates
can be listed in either clockwise or anti-clockwise order.
    4. You can specify the primary key (UFI) column (numeric) and an Oracle Sequence number such
that each new shape loaded can have its UFI assigned from that sequence.
Because of this flexibility, and the excellent support (it is a purchasable product) from the
developers, I can heartily recommend this loader to fellow Spatiallers. It is worth every
penny I spent on it. Try the free version on their website and if, like me, you like it,
    purchase it!
    regards
    Simon

    Hi Shuan,
As part of the zip file created for the next training course to be posted for Oracle Spatial on OTN (within the next few weeks) there is a free (unsupported, undocumented) version of a shape to sdo converter. This should work, but it is unsupported. It will create a layer that then needs to be migrated into 8.1.6 format.
If you need it quite soon send email to [email protected] and I can get it to you.
    Hope this helps,
    dan

thanks for the respond Werner, that seems to be the most tricky part (ODBC-Conf@Linux)
    the driver should be available:

  • Insert Unicode Characters Into Oracle 8.1.5

    Hello,
First off, here are the specs:
    Oracle 8.1.5
    JDK 1.2.1
Oracle8i 8.1.6.2.0 JDBC Drivers for use with JDK 1.2.x for Solaris
I'm running into a problem with insert Unicode characters into Oracle via the JDBC driver. As you can see above, I am using the Oracle 8.1.6.2.0 JDBC driver because it is the first driver with supports the JDK 1.2.x. So I think I should be okay.
I can retrieve data with special characters from Oracle by calling the getBytes() method from the ResultSet with all special characters being intact. I am using getBytes because calling getString() would throw the following exception: "java.sql.SQLException(): Fail to convert between UTF8 and UCS2: failUTF8Conv". However, with that value that I just retrieved, or any other data with special characters (unicode) in which I try to insert into Oracle does not get converted properly.
What appears to be happening is that data with special characters (unicode), are not being treated as a single double byte character, but rather two single byte characters. Thus, R|ckschlagventil becomes RC<ckschlagventil once it is inserted. (Hopefully, my example will be rendered properly).
According to all documentation that I have found, the JDBC driver should not have any problem with converting UCS2 Java Strings to Oracle's UTF8 character set.
I have set Oracle's NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET to UTF8. I am also setting the environment variable NLS_LANG to AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8. Perhaps there is some other environment setting in which I am missing?
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Christian

Import has a lot of options, so it depends on what you want to do.
    C:\> imp help=y
will show you all possible options. An example of full import :

  • Can you import Access into Oracle 10g Express Edition?

    Hi all,
I know you can import files from Access into some other versions of Oracle, but is it possible with 10g XE?
I've been looking at all the tools in my browsers and none seem to do it.
I guess I'll need to convert the tables into text, and then from text into Oracle?
    Thanks

Why not give SQLDeveloper's migration a shot?
You can get it for free here.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html
I've never personally done it, but it doesn't look to mind bending :)
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_db/appdev/msamigrate/msamigrate.htm
    Should work fine with XE.

  • Trying to import VMDK and VMX files into Oracle VM

I was given a copy of a VM built in VMWare with the files in VMDK and VMX formats. I've tried various methods of importing these into OVM x86 with no luck.
According to this 2009 blog post from Oracle it should be possible (at least with that older release):
    https://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/entry/converting_linux_and_windows_p
"Oracle VM Manager allows you to import virtual machines in the VMDK format. When you import VMware virtual machines, Oracle VM Manager converts them to Oracle VM virtual machines automatically."
I'm runninng OVM server/manager 3.1.1. Is this no longer possible with the new version?

That is correct, that blog post pre-dates OVM 3.1.1 which is a completely different management interface than OVM 2.x used. To my knowledge VMDKs are not supported automatically, and OVM is now expecting OVF/As.
