Copying Multiple Files = Slow

G'day,
I have a PowerMac G5 running 10.5.8, and Macbook Pro (2010) running 10.6.8.  They talk to each other via an Airport wifi connection.
If I copy more than 1 file at the same time between the two machines, it is slower than if I were to copy the files individually.
Is this a known issue?
Has this issue been fixed in 10.7.x?
cheers

Lots of variables involved, but here I'll test one 511.9 MB file compared to 8554 items equaling 492.6MB files using Airport between Mac Mini/1.42Ghz/512MB to AEBS to G5Quad/2.5GHz/10GB and back, using FW400 drives on both ends...
8554 items equaling 492.6MB... 14 min 50 secs (40 secs preparing to copy, started with 12 minutes remaining but half way through it said 22 mins remaining)
one 511.9 MB file... 8 min 18 secs (time remaining steadily decreased)
Copying back the other way...
8554 items equaling 492.6MB... 16 min 16 secs (5 secs preparing to copy, started with 9 minutes remaining but half way through it said 16 mins remaining)
one 511.9 MB file... 9 min 30 secs (time remaining steadily decreased)
You could tell when small files were being read & written by watching the Bytes/sec sent dropping to very small numbers.

  • Yosemite 10.10.1 will not allow me to copy multiple files to a NAS -error file in use, but other OS OK.

I am running Mac OS 10.10.1 on a Mac Mini with 16G.
I have a Buffalo NAS and wanted to copy files from one folder on the NAS  to another on the NAS.
Under Yosemite I can only copy them one at a time. If I try to copy more than one I get an error message that the file is in use.
Under SNS 10.6.3 (running under Parallels) I can easily copy a large number of files.
Again under 10.10.1 I get the same problem when copying from my desktop to the NAS.
The files are definitely not in use elsewhere and in any case if they were I wouldn't be able to copy one at a time.
When I try to copy multiple files the OS creates greyed out icons of all the files to copy and then aborts when it actually tries to copy the first file.
Any clues please, my current work around is to compress all the files to move, move the archive, expand the archive. This is not going to work for very large numbers of files - l'll be at it all day.

I have been unable to drag and drop large files, even onto the Desktop, let alone onto my NAS - I get the dragged files freezing in the middle of the screen or I get the 'unable to copy / file in use' error.
Talking to Apple Support, they had me set up a new User, and then within that new account, the trouble went away. This pointed to the StartUp items being run in the original troublesome account,
I have deleted all of my 3rd Party programs and then installed them one by one until the problem came back, and in my case (Macbook Air 5,2 running 10.10.3 Yosemite) I found it was DropBox causing the conflict. I have DropBox running in the Menu Bar (top of screen) and disabling sync (bottom left corner) stopped the file copy problem. Try disabling DropBox sync is file copying is failing?

  • Captivate 6 copying multiple files on Desktop while recording

    Description
When I am recording with Adobe Captivate 6, it is copying multiple files on my laptop desktop automatically. They are all full motion shock wave flash files? Is there a setting I can adjust so it does not do this or is there a reason why it does this? When I recorded a two minute software simulation, it put about 20 files on my desktop. I deleted them all and started over and it is doing it gain. I've attached what my desktop looks like with the icons with just four of them.

I followed you instruction but it didn't work.
I am doing the video demonstration recording and it shows the fmr file types on my desktop.
The default is showing to my Desktop.
    C:\Users\COONCE\Documents\Adobe Captivate Cached Projects
When I try to enter the path they gave, My Documents\My Adobe Captivate Projects, I get an alert that is not a valid location. I tried changing it to Libraries\Documents\My Adobe Captive Projects but it still puts them on my desktop. Am I just entering the wrong path?

  • Can't copy multiple files from compact flash via USB3

Problems on MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch with Mavericks installed...
I am not able to copy multiple files from an attached Lexar USB3 Compact Flash reader (card is 128GB Lexar UDMA 7 compliant).  Files are video files and when I try to copy more than one at a time the screen of my MacBook Pro flashes "off" and back "on" and the copy process ceases...
    Any fixes for this???

    See: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5471050?tstart=60
Update the firmware of your USB 3.0 card reader.  It's weird to think there is firmware on the thing, but it worked for me!

  • Copying multiple files

    Hi all
I got an assignment in socket programming in java and i am new to that.Actually the assignement is copy the large amout of data which is stored in one folder from one server to another server.
there will be muliple clients who can send multiple files to one server using socket programming..TCP/IP protocol.
Can anyone please help me out...? I would really appreciate it.

    DrClap wrote:
Sending multiple files is easy. First you send one file, then the next file, and keep going until you have sent all of the files.
Of course your receiving program will have to be told when you are finished sending each file, so you would have to design a protocol that distinguishes data (the contents of the file) from control information (the name of the file, the size of the file, the fact that you have just finished sending the file, or whatever you choose).Or the client could just close the socket like FTP does, it's a crock, but it's so traditional that most people and systems tolerate the occasional incomplete file. I prefer sending the size as a character string at the start of the transmission, of course this doesn't work it you don't know it beforehand.

  • I can no longer copy multiple files by clicking on the first file and holding the shift key and clicking on the last file. This worked until recently. I must have hit the wrong button at some point

I have been able to copy multiple photos on my Mac Book Pro by selecting the first picture and then holding the shift key while I select the last picture. This highlights all the pictures and then I can use the copy command. Recently that ability to select multiple photos (or files) has stopped working. I can only guess that I hit a combination of buttons that caused this feature to stop working. Any ideas on how to get this working again.
    Thanks - Mike

Your Template code is incomplete / corrupted.
That's why you can't edit it.
Try opening your .dwt file in a plain text editor like NotePad.  Remove the editable regions from code.  Save.  Open in DW.
You will need to SaveAs Template (same name as the one used by your child pages).  Add editable regions to match the ones in your child pages.  Save.

  • Copying multiple files to multiple locations

I'll give you as much background detail as possible to help explain this one.
We've made ourselves a little filemaker application, and at the moment I'm just working on creating a final disc image for it.
I figure I'm going to create an Automator application script on the DVD-ROM that will copy the contents to the Application folder, which is easy enough.
    Here comes the tricky part.
From time to time we'll be wanting to send out software updates. This software links multiple files into Filemaker from various folders.
When we send out an updates disc, I want to have an Automator script that will copy all the files on the update disc to the same folder names stored on the computer's hard drive.
ie, all files in folder A on the DVD will be copied to folder A on the hard drive.
and all files in folder B on the DVD will be copied to folder B on the hard drive.
    etc etc
I'm not even really sure on where to start to build this script. There's a good 50 odd folders to do this for.
I'm also wondering whether I'll need to input the full pathname of the destination or not. This could be problematic if someone has renamed their Macintosh HD to something else. Is is possible to just get it to look for the Applications folder as the destination?
hope thats clear enough. feel free to ask if you need more info.

    Hi.
Have you considered the implementation of an installation package (.pkg), using the PackageMaker tool.
    Good Luck

  • Labelling multiple files slow

    Hi Forum,
my Problem is the following. When i try to label multiple files with a colored label it takes a very long time, for the files to actually change the color. i know this should work instantly, as it did so on all my previous computers, and also does so on my two private macs.
the computer in question is an i5 27" iMac with Lion 10.7.3.
I had recently deleted the contents of my user/Library-folder which might have something to do with it? i've set most prefs to programs back manually and i don't even know if this problem relates to that.
things i have tried: repair permissions, stop dropbox / google drive, re-install 10.7.3 combo-update, reset spotlight. no use. the activity-monitor also shows nothing special, while the finder is taking it's sweet time changing the color labels. it takes roughly 20 seconds per file.
i know this is not a huge problem, but i use labels a whole lot an i really don't want to re-install the whole computer from scratch if it can be helped.
    anybody got any suggestions?

  • Copying multiple files off a Router's CF

    Hi,
I installed a new 3925 yesterday to try and replace and older 3825, hence i was burdened with the task of first adapting the config to work with the 3925 which had a different hardware spec, and then copying IPT files off the CF which became a nightmare when i saw the number of files.
I somehow managed to get through the config part, but failed to make significant progress in copying the files on the CF because they were just too many. I ended up doing repeat commands like copy flash:<filename> tftp:<filename>
Is there anyway to copy all the files with just one command?
I also tried using the SDM on the router but whenever I plugged my usb flash drive into it, the router does not recognize it.
    Any ideas please?
    Regards,
    Femi

    Hi Joseph,
Thanks for following up. I ended up not using the tcl cos I didn¹t need to
copy all the files at once. Got saved by the bell, but will try it out
when I'm done with this project just for knowledge's sake. Will revert
    once I do so.
    Cheers

  • Copying multiple files (1000+) - Progress bar update is slow! Any ideas?

When I copy 1000+ raw files from any drive to another it takes a long time before the copy progress bar shows up, and some times it just takes a long time before the progress is updated. When it is updated, it has already copied alot of the files. Quite annoying, because you don't really get if it has begun copying, if it's hanging or what... Seems to me that the new per-file progress bar takes up too many ressources!
Btw I'm not on a slow system. 2.5 Quad core i7 MBP, 16GB RAM, OCZ Vertex 3 SSD...
Anyone got any ideas on this?

The progress bars have always been wonky. Can't judge a thing by them.

  • [SOLVED]Copying multiple files from multiple directories to one folder

Title says it all.  I have a discography folder with subfolders of the different years and albums of a band each containing music, some also have more sub folders.  What I want to do is copy all of the music (.mp3's) from all the folders and sub folders into just one music folder.  I found a find and -exec cp command before but it did absolutely nothing for whatever reason.  Perhaps I did it wrong.  Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

. refers to the directory to search (the current directory), it's not a pattern - here's what you want:
    find . -iname '*.mp3' -type f -exec cp {} target_dir/ \;
This is assuming you're in the music directory - if not, you want
    find /path/to/music -iname '*.mp3' -type f -exec cp {} target_dir/ \;

  • SQL*Loader with multiple files

    Gurus,
I search the documentation and this forum and haven't found a solution to my issue yet...
I am not expert of SQL*Loader. I have used SQL*Loader to copy from one file to a table many times. But I have not copied multiple files into one table especially with different names.
    More specifically....
I need to load data from multiple files into a table. But the file names will be different each time. A file will be created every hour. The file name will consist of the root file name appended by a time stamp. For example, a file created on 10/07/2010 at 2:15 P.M. would be filea100720101415.txt while a file created on 10/08/2010 at 8:15 A.M. would be filea100820100815.txt. All the files will be in one directory. How can I load the data from the files using SQL*Loader?
My database: Oracle 10g Release 2
    Operating System: Windows 2003 Server
    Please assist.

RobertToo bad this isn't in *nix, where you get a powerful shell scripting capability.
That said, here is the core of the solution .... you will also need a way to identify files that have been processed vs. new ones. Maybe rename them, maybe move them. But with this sample you can see the basics. From there it is really an issue of DOS scripting, which would better be found by googling around a bit.
    cd c:\loadfiles
FOR %%datfile IN (*.txt) DO SQLLDR CONTROL=sample.ctl, LOG=sample.log, BAD=baz.bad, DATA=%%datfileTry googling "dos scripting language". You'll find lots of tutorials and ideas on "advanced" (well, as advanced as DOS gets) techniques to solve your problem.

  • Is it possible to upload multiple files at the same time?

    Hi folks,
It seems pretty trivial to implement a file upload item, but is there some way to allow selection (upload) of multiple files at the same time? Seems like this has probably come up before, but I didn't find much for solutions in my search. Any links or insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Adam vonNieda

Thank you both for your replies.
@Manish - That does allow for multiple file uploads without refreshing the page, but does not allow for multiple file uploads at the same time.
@Tony - That might be the way I end up going, although I probably should have been more specific. It would be really nice it there was a way to do a mutli-file select using the control or shift button like you can with a standard file selection dialog (if you want to copy multiple files, for example). Having a separate line for each file browser means there has to be a limit on the number that can be selected at the same time.
Has anyone implemented a method of selecting multiple files at once, and hitting an upload button once to get them into the database?
Thanks again Manish and Tony, very helpful.
    -Adam

  • Using Send to with multiple files in Sharepoint 2013

I believe I was able to copy multiple files using "Send To" just a week ago when I was testing things.  But then, it would not allow me to yesterday. It would only allow it if one file is selected.  Has there been a change? Or is there
a setting that would turn this on or off?  Thanks.

i dont think, there is option to copy multiple files using Send to Location function...its only for one document at a time. you can configure multiple send to connection.
there are other ways, i.e open with explorer and then copy multiple documents, or create workflow which copy documents from one library to other.

  • OSD: Downloading multiple files is very slow

I has a exe software. It is not a single file package, it contains a lot of files. when I installed this software in OSD, I found it would spend 15~20minutes to download files.
It was very strange. The software is only 750 mb size. the speed of downloading 6 GB OS image is also much faster than this software.
I know downloading multiple files is slower than downloading a single file, if their size are same.
But the downloading of multiple files in OSD is "really" very slow.
Why?  Cause of BITS or RDC?  How to fix it?
PS:I update to SCCM 2012 R2 with CU1,  add the below into SCCM
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\DP]
    "RamDiskTFTPBlockSize"=dword:00004000
    http://windowsdeployments.net/how-to-speed-up-pxe-boot-in-wds-and-sccm/
Now, the download speed up to 4 minutes, but it still slower than the normal copy & paste.
    Test result:
    OSD: 2.6G
    single image, 2 minutes
OSD: 750m multiple files, 4 mintues
after OSD, copy & paste from network drive, 750 multiple files, 1 mintue

I had updated to CU1 and add this into regedit . It is quicker than before, but it still slower than the normal.
