CPU time in AWR reprot

We are using Oracle 10g on Linux. Followings are some contents from the AWR report:
Elapsed:            60.26 (mins)           
DB Time:           437.27 (mins)Here why the DBTime is greater than Elapsed Time. Is it due to the fact that this is the total time spent in user calls by multiple sessions i.e. ( some sessions were on CPU, some were in IDLE state waiting for I/O)
The below statistics show that CPU was used only for 5,363 seconds. We have 8 CPU grid, so total CPU time is 60.26*8=482.08 Min. I want to know where does the remaining time was spent. Also there is 20.4% of Total Call Time. How does it is calculated.

  • Old query taking substantial CPU time in AWR report

    Hi,
    We have a particular query which used to generate substantial CPU wait event in the AWR report.On of our DBA's killed the query some days back but still today's AWR report shows that particular query as the largest CPU consumer (50%). When I checked from the view V$SQL the last execution time was of 23-02-2011.
    My question is after the query gets killed does it still show in the v$SQL ? And why is it still showing in the SQL BY ELAPSED TIME section ?
    Please help.

  • CPU TIME and DB CPU events under TOP 5 TIMED FOREGROUND EVENTS section in AWR report

    Is there any difference between "CPU TIME" event and "DB CPU" event when shown in AWR report under section "TOP 5 TIMED FOREGROUND EVENTS"?
    As per my understanding of both these terms they indicate the same thing. But then if it is so then why have different names?

    In the article that you have mentioned - Jonathan Lewis gives you a very clear explanation. CPU Time is updated at the end of a query. DB CPU is updated every few seconds.
    So the CPU Time may be less than DB CPU if there is a long running query that did not complete during the snapshot that you are reporting for. Conversly CPU Time may be larger than DB CPU if there is a long running query that spanned multiple snapshots but completed in the snapshot that you are reporting for.

  • Performance Degradated  Possibly due to CPU Time

    Hi Gurus,
    There is a utility in our application with which we can upload an excel sheet containing data and schedule the timing of the job, now when the job is executed, each row in the excel sheet leads to dml operations on multiple tables finally leading to generation of a transaction no. Now at the start around 100-120 transaction nos were generated which goes down drastically to around 30-35 after 6-7 hours. AWR report at the two instances shows that CPU time has decreased considerably in the 2nd case.
    I would like you experts to check the awr reports and suggest me the probable reason for the decrease in performance.

    The main finding that I have got from addm report (in both the cases i.e when performance was good initially vis a vis when performance deteriorated is the same -

    You have not given how much time the report ran. If this for 1 hour period or multi CPU machine, then 230 s CPU time will not be more. Provide full Report.
    Ensure that you read FAQ to know about formatting the report so that it can be readable.

    Before purging audit data I would suggest two things. First what is the time period for the report in question? If it is for a low usage period then the audit activity as a percentage of the overall load may be a bit distorted. It may also be worth checking to see what information the audit captured as you could have a contractual or legal obligation to capture the data.
    Second and most import look to see what audit rules are in effect. By just removing a few unneeded rules such as auditing successful logins/logoffs or changing from by access to by session for specific objects you could potentially remove most of the activity being shown.
    You may also want to check to see if a purge job has been set up. See dba_scheduler_jobs and Oracle proviced package: DBMS_AUDIT_MGMT.

    How the values are calculated in awr? For example db time is 556.15 and elapsed time is 1,439.73 .
    elapsed time is the clock time between the start and end time of the snapshots, reportedin in minutes - in your case your report covers 24 hours which is generally far too long to be useful.
    db time is the time your sessions were active "inside" the database - again in minutes - and it's a measure of how much time you spent working. It is the sum of wait time and CPU time.

  • How to increase cpu time for a job

    We have a application which submits a scheduler job. The job parses a blob and inserts rows into a table. It was running slow . On checking the scheduler tables I found out for actual time of 2 hours the job is taking cpu time of less than 2 minutes.
    Can anybody help us with any idea to increase the CPU utilization by around 4 times so the job finishes in 30 minutes

    How long does it take when you run the same action that the job is running from sqlplus ?
    This looks like more of an Oracle tuning question than a Scheduler question. You might get better answers if you gave more info about the pl/sql code being run and posted this to the general pl/sql forum here

    You can also try general PL/SQL profiling tools to see what statements in your code are taking the longest while to run e.g. AWR and ADDM if you have licenses for them.

  • Firefox is using large amounts of CPU time and disk access, and I need to know how to shut down most of this so I can actually use the browser.

    Firefox is a very busy piece of software. It's using large amounts of CPU time and disk access. It puts my usage at low priority, so I have to wait for some time to be able to use my pointer or keyboard. I don't know what it uses all that CPU and disk access time for, but it's of no use to me. It often takes off with massive use of resources when I'm not doing anything, and I may not have use of my pointer for several minutes. How can I shut down most of this so I can use the browser to get my work done. I just want to use the web site access part of the software, and drop all the extra. I don't want Firefox to be able to recover after a crash. I just want to browse with a minimum of interference from Firefox. I would think that this is the most commonly asked question.

    In Oracle 9i CPU costing is disabled by default, you need to gather WORKLOAD system statistics to enable the CPU costing.
    In 10g CPU costing is enabled by default and uses default NOWORKLOAD system statistics if no WORKLOAD system statistics have been gathered. It can only be disabled by setting an undocumented parameter or by changing the OPTIMIZER_FEATURES_ENABLE parameter back to 9i compatibility.
    You can check the status of your system statistics by running the following query in SQL*Plus:

    Mail application does not work properly.
    It eats up most of the available CPU time (till >300% on my machine), becomes unresponsive and will only quit when killed by a force quit in the Activity Monitor.
    I have only two accounts set up. One Gmail account and a google apps one.
    I used to synch with a Blackberry but now I synch directly through google apps.
    The problem was sporadic at best at first but has become the usual behaviour now. Major change has been installing 10.6.4
    I have switched to Thunderbird since Mail is not usable.
    Tx for any hint on how to solve this issue

    It seems to be a recurring issue with 10.6.4...there's probably not much mere mortals like us can do. I haven't found a solution. Try re-installing 10.6.4.

    Doublechecking ... are you getting this when iTunes is in the mini player mode? Or in the main player?
