Create a session programatically (ie, outside of APEX).

Following on from this thread (Using APEX Collections outside of APEX? we have a requirement to be able to create a user session programatically in sqlplus etc, so that we can utilize the APEX collections framework in our existing developments.
The issue I am having is with getting the session populated in the wwv_flow_sessions$ table.
If I create a session first by opening a page in APEX then my processing works fine using that session id, the problem comes when I want to programatically create a new session.
I have tried the following (where l_session is the id of the session I grabbed from running an APEX page):
DECLARE
  l_security_group_id  NUMBER := apex_util.find_security_group_id('OUR_WORKSPACE');
  l_session_id         NUMBER := apex_custom_auth.get_next_session_id;
  l_val                VARCHAR2(4000);
  v_arr                wwv_flow_global.vc_arr2;
BEGIN
  wwv_flow_api.set_security_group_id(l_security_group_id);
  apex_application.g_flow_id  := '1';
  apex_custom_auth.define_user_session('USERNAME', l_session_id);
  apex_custom_auth.post_login(p_uname => 'USERNAME', p_session_id => l_session_id);  /*Added this as an after-thought but it made no difference*/
  apex_collection.create_collection('XXTEST');
  /*some more things after this but it never gets that far*/but I get the error:
ORA-02291: integrity constraint (FLOWS_030100.WWV_FLOW_COLLECTION_FK) violated - parent key not found
ORA-06512: at "FLOWS_030100.WWV_FLOW_COLLECTION", line 288
ORA-06512: at line 12Running v('SESSION') returns a value, so the session is being populated, it's just a corresponding record isn't inserted into wwv_flow_sessions$.
Is there any API to create such a session? If not, what are the implications of doing a manual insert into this table before processing and then removing the row afterwards?

Ok, i see.
Why do you need the record in the session-table, does CREATE_COLLECTION require that?
I never created a Collection in a batch-job outside of APEX, but created/called an APEX Report. To "create" the session i used this code:
PROCEDURE initApexFromOutside
  ( i_app_name     IN VARCHAR2
  , i_page_id      IN NUMBER
  , i_apex_user    IN VARCHAR2
IS
    v_cgivar_name  owa.vc_arr;
    v_cgivar_val   owa.vc_arr;
    v_workspace_id NUMBER;
    v_app_id       NUMBER;
BEGIN
    -- set up cgi environment
    htp.init;
    v_cgivar_name(1) := 'REQUEST_PROTOCOL';
    v_cgivar_val(1)  := 'HTTP';
    owa.init_cgi_env
      ( num_params => v_cgivar_name.count
      , param_name => v_cgivar_name
      , param_val  => v_cgivar_val
    -- load apex IDs by application name
    SELECT workspace_id,
           application_id
    INTO v_workspace_id,
         v_app_id
    FROM apex_applications
    WHERE application_name=i_app_name;
    -- set up apex workspace
    wwv_flow_api.set_security_group_id(v_workspace_id);
    -- set up apex session vars
    apex_application.g_instance     := wwv_flow_custom_auth.get_next_session_id;
    apex_application.g_flow_id      := v_app_id;
    apex_application.g_flow_step_id := i_page_id;
    -- "login"
    apex_custom_auth.define_user_session
      ( p_user       => i_apex_user
      , p_session_id => apex_application.g_instance
    wwv_flow_custom_auth_std.post_login
      ( p_uname      => i_apex_user
      , p_session_id => apex_application.g_instance
      , p_flow_page  => apex_application.g_flow_id
                     || ':'
                     || apex_application.g_flow_step_id
END initApexFromOutside;
PROCEDURE doInitApex(pUsername IN VARCHAR2)
IS
BEGIN
    IF v('APP_ID') IS NULL
    THEN
        -- init apex environment
        initApexFromOutside
          ( i_app_name  => cAppName
          , i_page_id   => 1
          , i_apex_user => pUsername
        -- call show once because it sets additonal internal apex parameters
        Apex_Application.show
          ( p_flow_id        => Apex_Application.g_flow_id
          , p_flow_step_id   => Apex_Application.g_flow_step_id
          , p_instance       => Apex_Application.g_instance
        -- show re-sets other parameters at the end. have to init again...
        initApexFromOutside
          ( i_app_name  => cAppName
          , i_page_id   => 1
          , i_apex_user => pUsername
    END IF;
END;Maybe this works for you, too.

  • Setting Session item from outside of APEX

    Hi All,
    First a little background: I've been learning APEX for a couple of days now. I'm evaluating it to see if it's suitable for the application we need to make, otherwise it'll be done in PHP.
    The application needs to act as a web service client: as requirement number 1, we need to interface with a 3rd party IDP server to get a SAML2 assertion. This assertion will later need to be injected into the SOAP header of web service call, but I'm not worrying about this bit for now.
    I've gotten half way there. I've created a new page with a process at runs before the header. This can handle creating our authn request (which is a bit of xml) and forward the browser onto the IPD server for authentication (with anthn request set as a GET parameter that has been deflated and base64 encoded). Whoo!
    Once the IDP server has finished authenticating the user, a http post (with the SAML assertion we need) is done back to the application.
    Now as I understand it, I can't get the IDP to post back to an APEX page directly, as we need to access the HTTP Post data. So, I plan on writing a PL/SQL procedure (which I've added to the FLOWS ok list to be called via the PL/SQL gateway).
    So inside this procedure, I'm not in APEX, but I'll want to keep track of the SAML Assertion (which will just be a CLOB for arguments sake) such that I can use in APEX for when I make my SOAP call. If it was down to me, I'd have a table with session_id and the assertion, and just query that from APEX.
    BUT this 3rd party that we have to work with is the government, and they've given us rules. We aren't allow to store these assertions, they can only exist in the scope of a users session (no storing in files, databases, anything that could be permanently stored on the hard drive), virtual memory is ok though.
    So, after all that useless info, onto my question: Can I set an apex application item from this pl/sql procedure? If so, how would one do it? Now I understand that in the background, an item is probably written to a table, but I'm going to gloss over that for now (in the hope that the people certifying the app do the same).
    Thanks for all the help,
    Tim

    Tim,
    I am working a similar issue, but slightly different. I am trying to determine if we are trying to answer the same question.
    Here is what I understand about your initial posting...
    You are authenticating a user.. that must make a call to some "place".. then wait for that place to respond with an OK message, without storing the value. There is enough lag in this process that you want the response from "the place" that you want the response from "the place" to change the session value in the Web based UI. Is this correct?
    Issue: Even if you did have this process setting the session value, the client web browser would not respond unless it was in some type of checking loop.
    If you are in a checking loop, you would have the ability to call the "service" in some sort of checking mode from APEX.
    If this is a smooth process (no major lag), you could manage it within a custom authentication scheme. Is this the area you are working in?
    I understand your need to set from an outside connection. But if you are using the outside database connection method, you are isolated to a different session... I would believe (I do not work for Oracle) for security reasons.

  • How to create a session variable in Apex?

    Hello colleagues,
    Is there someone do know how to create a session variable in Apex?
    How to get them?
    Thanks
    Best Regards

    Hello,
    What do you mean by 'session variable'? You mean something that stores the value int he users session state?
    I really recommend reading the 2-Day Developer guide documentation, there is a complete section on session state -
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10513_01/doc/appdev.310/e10499/concept.htm#CIHCFHBD
    Hope this helps,

  • How Can I Run APEX_MAIL Outside of ApEx?

    We have a procedure running on our old server with htmldb 1.6 that uses htmldb_mail to send system status emails each morning.
    We have finally moved up to ApEx 3.1.2 on a new server. However, it appears that the new apex_mail package won't work outside of ApEx. I have written a new procedure on the new server to send email (a different email for a different purpose). When I try to test the procedure I get:
    ORA-20001: This procedure must be invoked from within an application session.
    ORA-06512: at "FLOWS_030100.WWV_FLOW_MAIL", line 285
    etc.
    The procedure on the old server is running just fine without any HTMLDB application.
    Is it no longer possible to invoke htmldb_mail or apex_mail from outside an application?
    Is it possible that some setting has been set to allow this on the old server but it is not set on the new server?
    Thanks,
    Grgegory

    Tony,
    I'm looking for details about smtp_mail. Can you point me to an Oracle document?
    Does smtp_mail provide attachment capabilities?
    Thanks,
    Gregory
    P.S. I just search the OTN Documentation library for 10g and 11g and there doesn't appear to b any reference to smtp_mail.
    I saw some documentation on utl_mail but it led me to doubt that it allows attachments.

  • How to create an database account authentication scheme in apex

    Dear
    I have an apex installation (embeded) on oracle 11g.
    I want to create a database account authentication scheme in apex. I have seen the page with different tab like name,subsription,source,session not valid, login processing, logout URL,session cookie attributes and comments.
    I want to know what are the things to be specifed on these tabs and the effects. I have gone thru the documentation 'Application Builder User’s Guide Release 4.1' , but the functionalities of these tabs are not mentioned.
    Please help.

    Thanks to dear Jit
    I am new to apex.
    I have gone thru that documents but I couldn't find any detailed documentation about the database account authentication scheme configuration
    The database account authentication scheme creation interface will show tabs like name,subsription,source,session not valid, login processing, logout URL,session cookie attributes and comments.
    I want to know what are the things to be specifed on these tabs and how it will reflect in the login. The specified documentation is not giving any detail about the above mentioned tabs of authentication scheme creation iwizard.
    And also I want to know how the applciation user will be mapped to the database account?
    As per my understanding a database user (for each run time user) is required for to authenticate the apex run time login other than the applciation schema user (holds the objects of applicaiton)
    run time user means - end user who uses the applcaition, not the developer.
    Please help.

  • Passing an APEX variable to another web page outside of APEX

    I need to pass an item variable from an APEX page to another web site outside of APEX. Does anyone know what syntax I would need to use? It needs to keep the session in tact.
    Thanks.
    Kelly

    Ah, as I read more closely ...   You say
    FIND_USER_IN_DB is defined as an application item.
    Application items get treated differently from Page Items.  They aren't on any page so there's nothing to directly tie them to a particular page operation. [You may have tried an obvious approach that doesn't work.]  Please check where you
    sets FIND_USER_IN_DB to the value in &P8_USERNAME.
    Does it say "Page Item" / "Item" there?   Check the selector?  Can you select an Application Item.  If memory serves, my (sad) experience is that you can list an Application Item here but it doesn't "work" and there's no warning that it's a problem -- except it doesn't work!  Application Items can't be given values this way.  Hey, it is what it is.  That's the way it doesn't work!
    So I believe you must "Submit" FIND_USER_IN_DB and then you can reference it on Page 11.  There must be several ways to do this.  I'll seaarch / ponder for a plain vanilla one.
    Howard
    (more)
    Well, maybe I have to take it back.   There is this documentation that suggests you can pass Application Items. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E37097_01/doc/doc.42/e35125/bldapp_item_app.htm#BCEHFDDJ   See Note in Paragraph 8.
    "Note: If you must set this item's value in session state using Ajax, then an Unrestricted protection level must be used for the item (for example in Dynamic Actions, Set Value, Page Items to Submit or Cascading LOVs, Page Items to Submit)."
    I'll try to run a test.  Still, the best solution for me still seems to assign the value of P8_USERNAME to FIND_USER_IN_DB and then submit the page which will plce the value in session.
    (more)  I was able to pass an Application Item if I set Session State Protection to Unrestricted.  Probably not a good idea!

  • Session state variables across multiple ApEx applications

    We have a suite of loosely integrate ApEx applications that all share a common authentication scheme. When you first log in we attempt to load a series of session state variables with temporary data to streamline various logging and authentication related activities for the life of the session.
    However, these session variables seem to disappear when you move from one application to another, so they are not truly tied to just the "session" which carries over across all applications, but the application from which the session state is set.
    What is the suggested way, keeping in mind that the data being held may have security related context, to preserve values during a session, but regardless of which ApEx application you are in.
    The method we are using to share the authentication is using a common "Cookie Name" from a common subscribed authentication scheme as suggested elsewhere on this site and seems to work very well outside of this specific issue.
    Thanks in advance,
    Barney

    Apologies for the delay getting back on this.
    My use of the word "disappear" was probably misleading. They were not visible from the second application. When setting "Session State" I was under the impression that it was setting it for the authenticated session, not for the specific application. (I am referring to the: apex_util.set/get_session_state).
    Your solution will work fine, as long as I know which application the user last authenticated against. However, it could be one of over 30 (and growing) different applications which would require me writing a program to go through every "p_flow" to try and find a valid value every time I need to reference the field.
    It would be really beneficial if you could store true Session variables which stay alive for the life of the authenticated session and is available to anything authenticated against that session id. This would streamline alot of cross-application program development.
    The "get/set_session_state" is a misleading as it is not a Session value, but an Application value. The Session exists across multiple applications, while this procedure does not.
    Thanks,
    Barney

  • How to create another session for a help page ?

    Hello
    I am trying to create help system for an application, which would be similar to apex's own help system. The main thing is that the help page/application/procedure would run independently of the calling application, and therefore it needs to create another session, I suppose ? How do you implement that ? I have also tried to find description of the package wwv_flow_help, but haven't found anywhere. Is it useful here ?
    Thanks for any comments

    If the link is from a page in your application then that's exactly what you want to do using javasScript to open a new window but keeping the same session ID in the request. In this way, when the new request is received by the Application Express engine, it will have the session cookie that goes with the specified session ID.

    Let me know if somebody has an idea of this .

    This is because of space character is jdev location i.e C:/jdev latest sanity/. Change the location of jdev to another directory which doesn't contain spaces and try again.

  • Create new session for each window opening

    From a jsp page i open a page called student.jsp by clicking on students admision no.Therefore lots of pages can be opend in new windows with relevent student details.
    but when i click on the link i called a servlet, get relevent details and redirect to student.jsp. The problem is ,all opened windows have same session id and there are session conflicts.
    How can i create new sessions for each page thru the servlet or is there any other alternatives

    I actually was working on a problem that was similar to this, and the problem is with how each web-browser works with sessions...
    Each browser window (Except in one case with IE) will use the same session in each window.
    However, you might be able to use URL-Rewritting to manage your sessions and get around using cookies for for session tracking. I personally haven't tried this, but I'm betting that it will work.
    Best of Luck,
    Nate

  • How do I create a session with the datasource set in code not sessions.xml

    I want to create a session where I specify the J2EE datasource name dynamically in code. Normally, I would hard-code a J2EE datasource name in sessions.xml e.g.
    <login>
    <datasource>jdbc/MyApplicationDS</datasource>
    <platform-class>oracle.toplink.platform.database.oracle.Oracle10Platform</platform-class>
    <uses-external-connection-pool>true</uses-external-connection-pool>
    <uses-external-transaction-controller>true</uses-external-transaction-controller>
    </login>
    However, we don't want to use a hard-coded string "jdbc/MyApplicationDS". We want to be able to set this at runtime.
    I found this in the App Developer's Guide:
    Configuring an External Connection Pool in Java
    To configure the use of an external connection pool in Java:
    1. Configure the DataSource on the server.
    2. Configure the Login to specify a DataSource and the use of an external connection pool:
    login.setConnector(
    new JNDIConnector(new InitialContext(), "jdbc/MyApplicationDS"));
    login.setUsesExternalConnectionPooling(true);
    and this:
    Configuring Sessions with the sessions.xml File
    OracleAS TopLink provides two ways to preconfigure your sessions: you can export and compile Java source code from the OracleAS TopLink Mapping Workbench, or use the OracleAS TopLink Sessions Editor to build a session configuration file, the sessions.xml file.
    It seems like I should export and compile Java code that calls login.setConnector(), but I can't find out any information on how to do this. I looked at the MW user guide and I didn't see anything on this.
    I also found this by searching this discussion forum:
    To create a server session completely from code given a project you can use,
    project.getLogin().setConnector(new JNDIConnector(new InitialContext(), "your-datasource-url"));
    project.getLogin().setUserName("");
    project.getLogin().setPassword("");
    Server server = project.createServerSession();
    server.login();
    However, I don't know how to get the project.
    Thanks,
    Vicki

    If you are using a sessions.xml file, you can get your project from your session. Ensure that when you access your session from the SessionManager, that you do not have it login.
    Session session = SessionManager.getManager().getSession("my-session", false);
    session.getProject().setConnector(...);
    session.login();
    If not using a sessions.xml, you can either read your Project from the XMLProjectReader, or instantiate your Project class directly.

  • How do I create a session?

    In order to use methods like getValidSessions() in the Session class of the SessionAPI for iPlanet Portal Server, I need a Session object. There is no obvious way to construct one based on the javadocs. I can get one from a SessionID object, but in order to create a SessionID object, I need a HTTP request or an encrypted string, i.e. SessionID( String sid ). How can I create a Session object, or how can I create a SessionID object (which will allow me to get a Session object)? Any help is much appreciated. NOTE: I'm building a plain Java utility to use the Portal Server API to retrieve session and profile information, and I'm not implementing it as a servlet.

    From com.iplanet.portalserver.providers.ProviderAdapater use the getSession() method whish returns com.iplanet.portalserver.session.Session object
    Then from Session class use the method getValidSessions()method

  • Why can't I get Pro Tools LE to create a session on my new iMac?

    Summary
    I can't get Pro Tools LE to open a session on my brand new iMac.
    Detail
    Pro Tools launches but when I go to create a session it seizes up, the beach ball spins and I have to Force Quit and send yet another note to the Apple teacher. It does this without fail. I've tried to rectify this by saving to different locations and different external hard drives. The problem remains the same.
    I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, stripping the computer of anything that says "digidesign," etc... it doesn't work.
    I am using the same Pro Tools with the same OS and the same Digidesign hardware on a MacBook Pro without a problem. Go figure.

    MacBook Pro
    Version: OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard
    Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

    MacBook Pro: Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus 750GB / FW400 > FW400
    _The Pro Tools LE Software_
    Pro Tools LE 8.0.3
    I know what you're thinking... Snow Leopard is the problem. Right?
    But the MacBook Pro has proven that theory wrong. The marriage between SL and LE8 on that notebook works fine.
    As for LE on the iMac... At first it was 8.0.1 but now it is 8.0.3.
    I upgraded to the supposedly Snow Leopard compatible Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 (pre-release) thinking that just maybe SL and LE8 weren't having as much fun together in the iMac bed as they were in the MacBook Pro. The result was identical -- stuck in Nowheresville.
    I've been to the Digidesign discussion boards and the best I've been told so far is that my 3 day old iMac is a dud. On the other hand, away from Digidesign intoxication, some of the pros in the biz around town have said it's probably Pro Tools. Pro Tools they say is, at best, troublesome.
    I'm planning on bailing out of Pro Tools altogether eventually and moving to an Apogee Duet with Nuendo 4 as I'm annoyed that I spend more time as an amateur paint-by-numbers technician than actually doing the job I'm paid to do. I'm also unhappy with expensive upgrades, lost paid for plugins due to upgrades and being railroaded into buying Avid gear only as demanded by the software.
    But, in the meantime... I'm stuck with it. My own suspicions are that the cause of my troubles is the external hard drive and the FW400>FW800 conversion configuration but I'm not about to blow a few hundred bucks for a new hard drive based on a hunch that may not work. Your thoughts?
    Any suggestions other than anything that involves screwdrivers and a cavalier mindset with the just out of the box hardware by a complete novice such as I are most welcome.
    Thanks.

    Hi
    I have the same problem.
    First I tried PT8LE 8.0 - didn't even start, afterwards i tried 8.0.3pr (1.25GB) - the same result. Now I downloaded the 8.0.3 normal (1.6GB) and it starts, but after I get to open/create new session dialogue box it just gives me the beach ball of death...
    When I force quit PT it won't even start again and gets stuck at loading plugins (and there are just the bundeled one, no third party - it's a clean install of the whole machine).
    I too have a week old 27" imac i5 with 10.6.2. On my old 24" with 10.6.1 it's runnig smoothly.
    My external drives were off during this so I guess it's not a thing of the FireWire ports.
    So I guess it's nothing positive or helpful, but You're not alone with this
