Create new boot disk with existing settings.

Hello.
I am soon going to be installing a SSD to supplement my HDD on my Macbook Pro, I would like to install Mountain Lion on the SSD, I am familiar with how to do this but I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to retain all existing settings and appearance etc. The size of the SSD is 256gb and the HDD is 512gb otherwise I would just use a program to carbon copy it however I have too much information to do that, is there any way of cloning just the OS part of the drive or something similar?
Many thanks
Rob

In theory, yes. You might need to control  - click on the item you want to restore which gives you a restore to option. I think I would enter Time Machine from the HDD system you now have installed to minimize the possibility the backup wouldn't recognize the SSD.

  • Creating a boot disk with minimal system

I just upgraded to Tiger. I have an external FireWire drive that has two partitions. One (large) partition is for a backup of my Mac's entire hard drive. The other (much smaller partition) is a boot drive - that boots from Mac OS 9. It's time to update the OS on the boot drive (and put a copy of Retrospect on it - in case I ever need to recover from a disaster).
My question is, how do I install a "minimal" system (10.4) on the smaller partition, and make it a bootable drive. The partition has 4.0GB of space. (I hope 4 gigs is enough.)
I apologize if this question is already answered elsewhere on this site. I looked in the knowledge base and in several forums and couldn't find the answer.

    Hi Clinto
Those 'minimal' installs date back to a time when you could run a Mac with just the System, the Finder and a couple of extensions. (Well I exaggerate but you know what I mean.)
They would omit most extensions, inits and control panels (QuickTime, AppleScript, networking, printer drivers etc etc), the idea being that you could squeeze the bare bones of the OS onto a floppy and boot in an emergency.
When you install OSX you are offered options not to install printer drivers or foreign language packages. And that's about as minimal as it gets. All the key technologies do get installed, along with the standard-issue applications like Safari, Mail, TextEdit... They're inextricably linked in a way that the elements of the different Classic OS's never were.
The page referred to above says you need a minimum of 3GB of install space for Tiger.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help creating a boot disk for ailing powerbook (and journalist!)

Hello, I'm a journalist with a desperate need to recover my Mac.
My Powerbook G4 (operating 10.4.8 I believe) was working fine until I did the latest suggested Mac software upgrade of Safari. Immediately Safari stopped responding hanging up or quitting. So I tried the next recommended update, thinking perhaps the two went together: Security 2008-009 I believe. It required a restart, which I did. (Note: I didn't do the recommended Java or Quicktime update at the same time because I'm currently working in Sierra Leone with terribly slow internet and figured I'd get to it later).
Now, however, the computer won't boot up. I hear the tone, I get the gray screen with the apple, I get the blue screen, I get the opening OS X screen and the blue progress bar, which then quits early on. Then I get a blue screen of alternating hues, which continues infinitely.
I tried all the Apple and web-suggested fixes. I cannot enter safe mode and can only perform functions with the single user mode. I've tried fsck and it said my HD is fine. The problem, I suspect, would be easy enough to fix if I could just reinstall OS X with my CD. However I am currently 7000 miles from home and CD, and in desperate need of my laptop in order to continue my volunteer work.
I do have access to a friend's MacBook Pro 10.4.9 and the internet. I have downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner... however I don't know which files I need to copy in order to create a boot disk. Nor do I know how to create a boot disk to actually put into my computer. I have also been scared by the CCC literature that says I need to erase the target volume... which in this case is my external hard drive containing all of our video footage from the last 8 months!
I use my computer every day, however I am a newbie at using things like Terminal and higher order functions that these occasions seem to require. CCC's Help manual, for me, might as well have been written in hieroglyphs (which, come to think of it, would have been easier as I seem to understand pictures well enough).
I would be eternally grateful for any simple or step-by-step advice which might help me get back to work. I'm training African journalists, and without my computer to edit, we cannot do a thing!
    Thanks,
    Kim

Here's some trouble shooting methods that I've copied from Apple KB articles:
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time. Release the keys.
If zapping the PRAM doesn't work, try resetting the PMU.
Warning: Resetting the power manager also resets date and time settings. Performing a PMU reset returns the iBook and PowerBook hardware, including NVRAM, to default settings and forces the computer to shut down.
    PowerBook G4 (DVI) and PowerBook G4 (1 GHz/867 MHz)
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disengage the two keyboard latches located between the Esc and F1 keys, and the F11 and
F12 keys. (You may also need to disengage the keyboard locking screw located between the
    F5 and F6 keys.)
Lift the keyboard. To ensure no harmful static electricity is transferred to the computer,
properly ground yourself before performing this procedure.
Press and release the reset button located on the upper right side of the logic board near the power button, shown here. Wait 5 seconds.
Press the power button to restart the computer.
PowerBook G4 and PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Press and release the reset button located on the rear panel of the computer between the
external video and modem ports. Wait 5 seconds.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.
    HTH!

Number range assigned to the X Document Type is internal. I have created new document (0001) with Document Part 000 & Version 00. For same Document Number when i tried to create New Document part by mentioning Document Numner 0001, Document Part 001 and Version 00, it says Document Type X can be assigned to internal number range only.
Even I tried with following selection....
    Document Number = Blank
    Document Part = 001
    Document Version = 00
    Template:
    Document = 0001
    Document Part = 000
    Document Version = 00

Help, please! Any advice on how I link my new iMac and my new itunes software with existing external harddrive containing my entire itunes library?

    Hello!
It should be a matter of
Quiting iTunes first if it's running
Connecting your external harddrive to your Mac, use the Finder to browse to it
Find your iTunes folder on the ext HDD and double-click on iTunes Library.itl
If you have any trouble with this, please let us know.

  • How do I create a new boot disk from an existing one?

I have a G4 Quicksilver with internal PATA disk, running 10.4. I want to upgrade the internal disk from 40 GB to 160 GB. I have installed a second disk and can see it fine, but what I really want is to put the system on the new disk and have it be the one and only boot disk in the system. Is there a straightforward way to do this? Is a carbon copy cloner the way to go? Will that have problems with the different disk sizes? Will it handle bad blocks properly? Isn't there a way to just use drag-and-drop?
Once I have made a copy, how do I make it the boot disk? Do I have to swap it into the PATA "master" position to do this?

    Cloning And Backup Tools
A bootable clone is an exact copy of your drive which is capable of booting your computer. Making a copy of your computer which is capable of actually starting the computer requires special copying procedures. Some people just back up data files but if you have problems you have to reinstall all your operating system and all your applications. With a bootable clone you just start up from the backup drive and clone back everything.
To copy files from one hard drive to another hard drive you can use:

  • SharePoint 2010 - Create new site collection in existing web application with different existing content DB

I have a SharePoint 2010 root level site collection SC1 in web application WEBAPP1. I want to create copy of that site collection in same web application WEBAPP1. Apart from Import/Export, Restore/Backup options, will following approach work? If yes , how?
I took backup of content database of web application.
    Restored database with different name
Mounted Content database to this WEBAPP1 by assigning new ID to DB
Created new site collection by using this newly mounted DB
Site collection gets created successfully but content does not appear.
Please guide if i can achieve desired functionality by using this approach.
If this helped you resolve your issue, please mark it Answered

It is because the Site GUID is identical, and each GUID can only be present on the farm once. You can use Backup-SPSite/Restore-SPSite (which is full-fidelity, unlike Export-SPWeb/Import-SPWeb), which will generate a new GUID for the restore Site Collection,
even in the same Web App.

  • Creating external boot disk from an earlier time?

I've put a lot of progs on my MBP. No probs with that, but for my work, should it ever go down, I'd like to have a boot-able external drive with only the progs I need at the time so I can be back up and running asap. (Yes, I know I should have thought of this earlier.)
I could uninstall all the new stuff, create a boota-ble drive, then re-install...
    but I don't want to.
So is there a way to create a boot-able drive from an earlier time using TM? so that, for instance, it could boot up to what it used to be a month ago? In theory all the data is there in TM to do just that...
    or
Here's a workaround: Can I take the MBP to a month ago and create a boot-able drive, then use TM to come back to the present?

    Karel Bata wrote:

Try restoring from the previous TM backup to a clean disk or partition. Then use SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner to create a bootable clone.

  • Any tips for restoring data on new boot disk?

I'm replacing the boot disk on my PB G4. Rather than cloning the old disk, which functions fine, I'd rather do a clean install of Tiger and my apps just to clean out some of the garbage. Any advice as to the best path to take when it comes to moving data / prefs / settings for the following apps?
    Address Book
    Mail
    iCal
    iSync
    iPhoto
    iTunes
    Safari
    and especially Keychains
Now that I think about it, I guess I'm trying to move my home folder over and replace the root account that reinstalling the OS is going to do.

I guess I should clarify. I don't create a disk image when I clone a drive with Disk Utility. What I do is simply take the boot drive and drag it to the field in the restore tab that says "source" and drag the external disk to the destination. I check the erase destination box and click on the restore button. Then I do not touch the Mac until the restore process is complete.
I have done this on at least four different Macs and tested each copied disk by rebooting it and actually using it.
That being said, I think SuperDuper is a much more useful program for backkups, especially if you pay the registration fee and set it up to do automated backups on a daily basis.

  • How to create os boot disk

    Hi, folks,
I have a white 13" MacBook and a duo core iMac. Both are running Snow Leopard. My laptop has an apparent hard drive problem, and I want to boot it with the CD. My problem: I can't find the darn disk!
So, is there a way I can create an OS disk on my desktop machine and use it to boot the laptop?
    Thanks very much!

Call Apple, give them a nominal handling fee and your unit's serial number.
    They will send you replacements.
In the meantime, you can try to prevent "unfortunate" loss.  If you have not done so, then:
    Download CarbonCopyClone for free
Buy an external, self-powered disk (FireWire800 is 2x as fast as USB)
Make a clone of your startup disk.  It is a bit-by-bit clone, fully bootable.
If your system will live long enough to do that, you will have *something* to recover with if problems get worse before your new install disks arrive.
If the system is simply trying to avoid bad HD sectors, the clone should be usable in a pinch.  Other HD issues *may* make the clone unusable, but at lesst you will be *trying*.
I am not suggesting that the problem not be pursued, just suggesting some "immediate defense" action.

  • Creating new records while querying existing record

    Hi,
I have one master - detail form.
First i created 1 record. Request ID is the primary key. Now request id generated. For ex.: 10
Request Id, date, requestor , location, status fields are in header block.
In lines block, i hv some other fields.. and one field called 'Activity'.
While creating first record, the activity will be 'New'.
Then i'll query the record '10'.
when i'm changing the activity 'New' into 'Upgrade', it should create new record with new request ID.
    How to do this?
I hv written procedure that, i'm taking field values to local variables. Then assigning the local variable values to field values.
It is not creating as new record. It overwriting the existing record with new values. Existing record is missing.
    Pl. give steps.
    Thanks
    Kavi

    Hi,
Okk, you will have to do two things. Create two trigger on block level on which you want to do your changes.
    1. First trigger. (PRE-UPDATE)
In pre-update trigger u will have to write the complete insert statement into the same table with new req id. like
    DECLARE
    vReqNo DATA_TYPE;
    BEGIN
    SELECT MAX(REQ_ID)
    INTO vReqNo
    FROM your_table;
    INSERT INTO your_table
    (req_no, fields....)
    VALUES
    (vReqNo, :forms_values);
    END;
    2. Create 2nd trigger on block level (ON-UPDATE)
    write in this trigger
    NULL;
for viewing the inserted record. What u have to do is in ON-UPDATE after null; create one timer NO_REAPEAT.
and in timer u will have to set the block property to req_id = generated_req_id_from_pre_update_trigger and
    execute_query;
    hope it will work...

  • Creating new version by copying existing version without originals

    Hi Folks ,
Is there any way we can control copying Original files & Classifications when we create a new version of document info record using existing template .
I have a situation that I need to copy all the information ( Like description , Object links etcc) of a existing document info record except the Classifications & Original files. This is required since the newer version of the document should have newer version of Original file attached on it.
Any input will be highly appreciable & rewarded.
    Thanks & regards,
      Ramesh babu .P
      Fujitsu consulting , US .

    Hi Ramesh,
you can control this in the document type customizing in transaction DC10.
    1. Choose the relevant document type
    2. Go to folder "Define object links"
Here you can see all the maintained objects which you can link to this
        document type.
    3. Select the relevant object
    4. double click this object to display the details
    5. By "When new version" you can choose between:
        - Selection by user
        - Ignore link or
        - Copy link automatically
This will control what happens with existing object links when you create a new version.
I hope this information is useful for you.
    Best regards,
