Create XML in a Package under Oracle 9 WITHOUT Java

I need to produce a piece XML (VARCHAR2)... in Oracle 9, but we don't have Java installed [and won't].
I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to build the XML string. The XML is very complex, and not going be built from a single query. It is actually several result sets concatenated together.
Basically, I already have the data retrieved... What's the "smartest" suggestion on assembly?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

> Actually, I'm a PL/SQL, Java, C# Developer. Our DBAs are always nervous about
security. And the "extra" grants and rights necessary to use JAVA make them very
nervous.
What extra grants?
There are no special system elevated privs required to run a Java VM inside an Oracle Server Process servicing a client, wanting to parse XML.
> So in the interest of speed and time, I can't go there
Speed and time are not a mere function of initial development, but also of the usability of that result, and the maintenance and support of it.
I do not think it acceptable to cut corners during initial development for the sake of speed and time. Especially not when it comes to re-inventing the XML parsing wheel inside Oracle.
Bluntly put, I find that a bit idiotic.
In your shoes I would sit down with the DBAs and determine their actual concerns - as I'm pretty sure that it is based on ignorance and will not stand any real scrutiny. Worse case, I will insist via management that they do install the Java VM and file any security issues they have as an SR with Oracle Support for resolution.
One does not buy a car for transport and then insist that it must stand in the driveway at home, not ever moving, in case it may be involved in an accident on the road.
FWIW, I have worn the DBA cap for many years and I have no problems with Java being used in Oracle. And yes, there are security issues to be aware of and yes, these can be managed and controlled without these ever becoming a security concern. IMO.

  • Performance of PL/SQL-packages under Oracle 11gR2

    Under Oracle 9i I have used PL/SQL-packages/procedures to perform complicated initializations of the tables of a database schema.
    This was always a long job ... but an execution time of about 4 hours was acceptable!
    Now I changed to Oracle 11g.
    And now there is the following behaviour:
    When I create a NEW instance of the database and then create the schema the execution time ( using the same PL/SQL-packages as in Oracle 9i ) is more than 12 hours which is not acceptable anymore!
    When I only drop the schema ( in the EXISTING instance ) with a drop user (owner of the schema) cascading and then create the schema again the execution time for the same initialization is less than 3 hours which is OK.
    Does anyone have an idea about the reason for such a 'strange' behaviour?
    ... Or does anyone have a hint where I could look for such reasons?

    Hi,
    did you compare the execution plan in 9i and 11g R2?
    when you go to 11gR2, did you keep the statistic of the 9i, so if any regression, 11g can use 9i plan?
    thanks

  • XML Publisher/Bi Publisher Using Oracle Package and MS Word Template builde

    My Question is I want to know more about grouping of elements while creating reports in E business suite.
    my approach should be 1. pl sql package with embedded XML data to create xml output. 2. Formatting the xml output using ms word template builder plugin.
    My question is if grouping is required, then where should it be? While creating package to generate xml output or while formatting xml o/p in ms word?
    I wanted to create a check cancellation report where the report should look like below.
    Bank Name American express
    Bank address 1 Cape town city Road
    bank address 2 Lane 2
    Bank City Cape town
    Branch Docara v'dola
    Check number Amount Vendor Status
    1023423 225 huawei Voided
    1023430 500 Ericson Voided
    Signature
    Now for above grouping I Written some thing like below package:
    But I want to know Had I not done the grouping in Package, would it have still be possible to do the grouping in MS Word template builder?
    To simply fy question: If I had not written 2 cursors and written 1 simple cursor and had got simple 1 after 1 fields without any specific grouping in ora package, would it have been possible to do the same grouping while formatting the xml output in MS word template builder?

    Hi,
    You can do grouping in either place. But ideally to avoid re-grouping in the BI Publisher Template your XML would be generated such that it is appropriate for your template.
    This is really important when it comes to very large datasets as you should avoid regrouping in the template in this case.

  • Creating XML File Using xmldom Package

    How can I create an XML file from scratch using the PL/SQL xmldom package?
    I want to create an XML file using the xmldom package instead of building the individual tags as strings of VARCHAR2 character data. There is quite a bit of documentation regarding manipulating input XML files using DOM -- but not for creating XML files from scratch given known "tagnames" (<lastName>) and retrieved database "values" ("Smith").
    <person>

    Is there any documentation that you can recommend?

    Thanks in advance for any help offered..

    In Linux I have noticed the same thing when compiling java code that is in a package but not stored in the proper location. You shouls simply set your classpath to the location "you" want java to look for your packages or other 3rd party packages. This is just for your convenience. You can have one directory to store all your sourcecode or you could have ten directories. Setting your classpath will have no affect on how windows users will be able to properly use your code. you "should" be able to compile your code with
    javac mycode.javathat has worked for me since the current directory is always considered to be in the classpath?
    Its clear that you understand how the packages have to be stored in the file system. So just think of the whole classpath thing as something to do when you install java classes and packages to your system into a new location. I would not place my classes in the / directory of my system. Many people also don't have the permissions to do so, but they can put the files in their home directories and just update their classpath variable to reflect the directory where they placed the packages. I think packages are "supposed" to be used to organize your source code. It should also group like Objects together. Just look at the Java API the whole thing is based on different types of stuff. They shouldn't put the System class with the JFrame class. They have nothing in common, and therefore should be separated. When making packages you should think hard about your naming conventions because you obviously want your package heirarchy to make sense so that you can properly use it. In the end though I think it is up to you whether you even use packages since they arent even required for your application. So did yo get your app running or are you still having problems?

  • How to import BC4J package into JDEV project without server.xml file?

    Dear,
    I need to bring the seeded BC4J package into my JDEV OAF project. Usually to do that, once I am sure that all I need is accessible, I open the server.xml file for the BC4J that I need and I am all set - all the items from under that BC4J are brought in.
    How about if there is no server.xml file for that BC4J, for example, under oracle.apps.icx.por.req.webui, and I need to have a controller from under there in my project? Do I create this package (oracle.apps.icx.por.req.webui) manually? If I do that and then open the controller the controller is being brought into JDEV outside the package.
    Thank you.
    Anatoliy

    Sumit,
    Thank for quick response.
    Yes, I agree for the controller.
    But let's say I want to bring over some other xml staff, like some shared regions for example from under that webui. They are also brought outside the package. You have an idea?

    Hello myself,
    nobody has answered my question, so now I answer myself!!
    The wrong part is to read the file with "open dataset" and to create the inputstream with
    p_istream = p_streamfactory->create_istream_itable(
    table = g_xml_table
    size = g_xml_size ).
    Better ist to create the inputstream with
    p_istream = p_streamfactory->create_istream_uri(
    .......................PUBLIC_ID = ''
    .......................SYSTEM_ID = '
    applserver\I$\TEMP\Datei.XML' ).
    In this way no space is needed for the file.
    Best regards,
    Thomas

  • Any support to create XML files?

    Hello,
    I was looking for functionality and support that OWB 10gR2 might offer in order to create XML files, containing relational data w.r.t a given definition. I did only find the packages that allow manipulation of XML data in tables and those two that allow loading data from XML files, but didn't find any write support.
    Is my conclusion correct that there is no functionality that supports coding data in XML files in OWB 10gR2? Can anyone who knows please confirm or falsify this conclusion.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards Holger

    Hi,
    the best way with BI Publisher to do that is a data template: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10383_01/doc/bip.1013/b40017/T421739T434255.htm
    With that you can create your wished structure out of the database.
    Have you tried with database functinonality? Have a look at the SQL/XML Functions: http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14259/xdb13gen.htm#sthref1484
    which could be an approach.

  • Determining File Name in Info Package under External Data

    Determining File Name in Info Package under External Data
    I am on SAP BW 3.0. A System is sending a flat file every few days
    With a date time stamp, e.g., d:\loaddar\file_20080212_122300.csv
    I know in Info Package one can create routine under external data to determine the file name. I have seen
    Examples where people determine file name based on date. Since my file has a time stamp, what code  I write a  to pick the file. Is there a way to read one or more files and
    Determine file name.
    I am new to SAP BW and ABAP. However, I have lot of experience with Oracle and Java.
    Can someone point me how this will be done. I am looking for some sample code as well.
    Thanks in advance. I will really appreciate your help.

    Hello Prem,
    Even i used to get the file suffix with date & time, and i found very difficult to pick up the file from application server using routine in infopackge. Then i asked to change to date only and it was easy to pick the file using routine. But i think in your case files are coming more than once, in such a case you should write a small unix script to add these files and then convert into single file with date only and execute the infopackage to load it.
    Cheers!

  • Gnome automount and media.repo under Oracle Linux 6.3

    Hello,
    I experiencing a strange behavior testing the following under Oracle Linux 6.3 (x86-64-bit) UEK2 with all latest updates. I selected the Gnome desktop packages using the "customize now" ratio button when installing the OS
    * Log in to a graphical shell such as GNOME
    * Insert addition media disk into the computer
    * Observe the media is mounted by the session
    * Wait a couple of seconds
    * Observe the /etc/yum.repos.d/packagekit-media.repo now exists
    The above is explained in more details at http://people.redhat.com/rhughes/media-repo.txt
    I don't know what the "addition media disk" is, but inserted the Oracle Linux 6.3 x86_64 binary distribution DVD, which also has media.repo file in the root directory. And btw, I'm using VirtualBox and the DVD is an .iso disk image.
    I'm experiencing the following:
    Gnome automount works and automatically opens the DVD when inserted.
    It does not create the /etc/yum.repos.d/packagekit-media.repo file.
    It actually does create the named repo file, but only after one waits about 15 minutes. Perhaps this has anything to do with gpk-update-icon, but when run manually it hangs.
    With the packagekit-media.repo file finally created. The gpk-application however complains: "The group list was invalid".
    I know how to create a yum configuration file pointing to a local repository, which is also coverd in the Oracle Linux 6.3 distribution readme. I just wonder about the problem. Th automatic business with the media.repo file seems broken and useless. I did one more test using the original RHEL kernel which, as expected, did not make a difference.
    Does anyone know more about it?
    Thanks!

    I cannot create an SR, but I did some more tests creating my own DVD, playing with the info in the media.repo file. It seems matching the mediaid and .discinfo information alone doesn't fix it.
    Actually some of the stuff is explained in the link I already used: http://people.redhat.com/rhughes/media-repo.txt. The problem seems that it doesn't work as advertised.
    It takes exactly 15 min. before the system (gnome) automatically copies the media.repo file from DVD to /etc/packagekit-media.repo. If the file already exists it gets overwritten.
    I think it might be a good idea to make an entry in the media.repo file on the DVD, such as:
    baseurl=file:///media/<disklabel>
    skip_if_unavailable=True
    Then when inserting the DVD under gnome it would not be necessary to create a yum repository configuration file to use the DVD. The 15 min. delay will have to be fixed, which is only supposed to take a couple of seconds.

  • Tool to create XML definition, a tool for creating XSD

    I need a tool to create XML definition, a tool for creating XSD.
    I was trying to do this with Oracle packages. But again there are some problems. Could you tell me which one, I should use?
    Can I do it with the Oracle SQL Developer?

    Hello,
    i get the error message and I don't know, what I can do
    The user have the permissions to use DBMS_LOB package.

  • Creating XML report using PL/SQL Stored Procedure

    Hi Friends,
    I am working on an xml report with the xml source as PL/SQL Stored Procedure.
    I am referring the exercise shown in the following link to understand the process:
       http://orclapp.blogspot.com/2012/02/developing-xml-publisher-report-using.html
    In the example shown in the above link I could not understand the following:
    1) In the following procedure, the out parameter 'retcode' is not used at all.
       What is the importance of this parameter.
        PROCEDURE REPORT (errbuf  OUT VARCHAR2, retcode  OUT VARCHAR2, p_product_id   IN     NUMBER)
    2)  After the xml data is prepared and put to 'l_result' Clob variable, the following
        Loop is executed. I am not able to appreciate why the following loop is required.
         LOOP
             EXIT WHEN l_length = l_retrieved;
             IF (l_length - l_retrieved) < 32000
             THEN
                SELECT SUBSTR (l_result, l_retrieved + 1) INTO l_xmlstr FROM DUAL;
                l_retrieved := l_length;
                fnd_file.put_line (fnd_file.output, l_xmlstr);
             ELSE
                SELECT SUBSTR (l_result, l_retrieved + 1, l_offset)
                  INTO l_xmlstr
                  FROM DUAL;
                l_retrieved := l_retrieved + l_offset;
                fnd_file.put_line (fnd_file.output, l_xmlstr);
             END IF;
         END LOOP;
    3) In the example it is not explained how the concurrent program gets the xml data?
       I assume it is written to a file using the following line of code:
        fnd_file.put_line (fnd_file.output, l_xmlstr);
       I would appreciate if anyone can throw some light into my above queries so that I can understand the process clearly.
    Thanks & Regards
    Hawker

    Hi 32000 in the code is a 'safe' size smaller than the max available 32767, the loops purpose is to move through the entire thing in chunks that will be manageable in the limits of the data type.
    Btw; if you are in Oracle e-business suite then you can also use Oracle reports very simply to create XML output.
    If you have reports developer all you need to do is put raw sql (without any 'artifice' to create XML) in the report SQL and then set the reports output to XML in the program definition in Oracle e-business.
    best regards,
    Robert.
