Creating a manifest.mf when generating a jar file.

First post ever using java and its probable really simple. I've basically been chucked in at the deep end of a java app. I've had to reverse engineer it and I'm at the following stage:-
I'm rebuilding the project to create my jar file and I'd like to
1)get a list of all the files of the project within my manifest.mf
2)Digitally sign the files as well, which from what I've read create a *.DSA and *.SF file. The manifest would then have to contain the checksums (SHA1-Digest)
Now I've been playing for a few hours trying to get the manifest to produce the list of files, but with no success all I get is teh default.
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Ant-Version: Apache Ant 1.6.5
Created-By: 1.5.0_12-b04 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)Any ideas on what I'm missing.
Thanks for any help it will be greatly appricated by a newb with 0% java experience
(taking me a few days to sort out a Ubuntu server to serve the Java apps, but thats working sweet as :D)

got it all working in the end.
Used the following within the jdk/bin folder
keytool - to create a cert
jar - to create the jar file
jarsigner - to create the manifest and sign the files.
I created a load of bat files to do the job.
Now onto the next problem of compiling the java files into class's

  • Getting error when running the jar file..

    Hi All,
I am new to executing jar file..Actually i have one class which contains the following code.

}Now i create the jar file whose name is docbaseconnection.jar
Now when i am running this jar file by using the following command then i am getting the following error..

I already add this jar files in the classpath of environment variables..Then also i am getting the same error..
    Kindly help me...........

Well, let´s supose your manifest is defined as I did in my previous post. So, your directory base should be something like:
    C:\dir
    docbaseconnection.jar
    dctm.jar
    dfc.jar
    anotherlibraries.jar
But, let´s supose you want something like
    C:\dir
    docbaseconnection.jar
lib (folder, which contains dctm.jar, dfc.jar, etc)
Then you should change the class-path of your manifest to
    Class-Path: ./lib/dctm.jar ./lib/dfc.jar
    That´s what I meant

  • "no manifiest section for signature file entry" when run the Jar file

I built an application by using JBuilder 8.0 and it works fine. But when I deploy it into a jar file, whenever I run it, the following exception appears:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.SecurityException: no manifiest section for signature file entry javax/security/cert/Certificate.class
    at sun.securtiy.util.SignatureFileVerifier.verifySection
Because I didn't do anything about the security when build the application. I am really confused. Can somebody help?

I had a similiar problem using NetBeans. There must be a way to view the properties of your jar from Jbuilder and set its manifest. I am very new to this myself, but all I did was edit another manifest and copied into mine. Here is my example manifest:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Main-Class: J3Ed
The first line is the default line for a manifest. It is very simple and there is much more that could be added, but is not always necessary. I recommend reading the documentation :
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/Books/javaprogramming/JAR/basics/manifest.html
Also if you have an archiving utility such as powerarchiver or winzip, open your JAR and check to see that you have a MANIFEST.MF file. If you do then edit it where needed, if not create one and its relative location should be set to META-INF/MANIFEST.MF.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to preserve a background color, when generating a PDF file

I am trying to create a PDF file from some application. Please note that the picture in this application has the black background. So I invoke a Print command and set a printer as "Adobe PDF". As a result, I have generated
a brilliant PDF file of my picture, but on the WHITE background. When selecting the Adobe PDF printer, I have looked through all its settings ( in the Adobe PDF settings, I have found several tabs: General, Images, Fonts, Color, Advanced, PDF/X), none of them generated the original background color.
So how can a generate a PDF file, having the original background color (black, in my case) ?
    Oleg

Now I feel that the background definition in the Adobe PDF printer and the background definition in the application the Adobe PDF printer is invoked from -- two different things. So I guess how can I define the black background in the Adobe PDF printer? I cannot find such settings.

  • Problem when modifying the jar file of a portal component

I get the umelogonbase.jar from the com.sap.portal.runtime.logon component, extract it with winzip, do not make any changes to the source code, then re-create the jar file and add it back to the component. Now, when I deploy the component to the Portal I get the following error:
    "Portal Runtime Error
An exception occurred while processing a request for :
    iView : N/A
    Component Name : N/A
    com/sap/security/core/logonadmin/IAccessToLogic.
    Exception id: 10:30_08/08/07_0012_15067450
See the details for the exception ID in the log file"
any idea what I am doing wrong here?
I am doing this because I need to change the texts in the umelogonbase.jar, so this is the first step to see that the component still runs once I modify the jar file.
Note: I create the jar file by creating a jar-type project in NWDS and then exporting the project as jar.

Do you have JDK installed? If not then please install it by downloading from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html. Install it in your local machine. Then inside the installation folder\bin folder you will find the jar.exe.
Also create the environment parameter named JAVA_HOME and set the value as the installation directory of JDK for example JAVA_HOME=C:\j2sdk1.4.2_13. Also add the following to your Path environment variable
    C:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\bin;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_13\lib;
these path names should vary depending upon your actual JDK installation folder name.

  • When to use JAR files

We are having a discussion at work about the proper usage of jar files. I am fairly opinionated and need to get some good feedback on when jar files make sense.
    Network:
We have a unix based network as well as a windows based network. We can share samba mounted drives and allow windows access to the class files on the unix network. Most of our internal webservers are on the unix platform.
We use java in applications, servlets, and JSP's. We have also designed an electronic technical manual that will be deployed via internet and cd rom.
My first contention that jar files are not needed in the Servlet environment. The class files are virtually local and file storage is not an issue.
My second contention is that applications running on windows machines would have better performance from local jar files, but the benefits are outweighed by the need to rebuild and reinstall the jar files to ensure the applications behaved the same on both systems.
My third contention is that the technical manual on cd is a very good candidate for use of jars. We have a limited amount of space to store the files on a cd. We would probably use the jars to serve the information to ensure the behavior of the manual is the same whether the application was access via the CD or the internet.
What am I missing? Is my understanding of JAR files out of whack with reality?

Jar files (and their siblings i.e. Wars, Ears) make a
good unit of deployment. It is much easier to keep
track of a few jars than a bunch or classes. We have classes which are used in several applications. Ie, A bean queries our bill of material. It is used in an engineering, a manufacturing and a planning application. It can also be used in a jsp. If that bean changes, we would have to deploy three new jar files. If we run from one directory structure, a simple compile fixes all three applications.
With the samba mounts, we can get to the directory from windows and most flavors of unix.
We actually have two directory structures. One for production and one for test. Developers usually have another copy stashed somewhere for development purposes.
I don't know where you get better performance. The
jar needs to be unzipped which can only slow
performance. Rebuilding a jar is easy (get Ant) and
reinstalling a jar is easier than installing a buch of
class files and resources (see above.) In addition,
you can seal jars which gives you some level of
protection (though superficial) and you can set up the
jar so that it knows the main class. For the most part, these are internal applications, so security is not the top priority. Jars would be nice as they should generate less network traffic due to their smaller size.
A jar is really just a zip file with a special
structure. This is really a question of whether you
need compression. If you can't fit everything onto a
single CD then compression can help. A plain old zip
file would work just as well. The compression is the main reason for the techpub application using the jar files. Space on the CD is a concern. Also, for internet access, bandwidth is also a concern. IE, less bits to shove down the wire.
Like I said before jars are a convienient way to keep
things organized. You can send out a program in a
single unit that has everything it needs to run.I have an aversion to anything which requires an install on the users box. This probably comes from working with a bunch of unix hacks that have our system tuned to the nth degree. Much easier to deploy to one central location. No worries about whether or not someone turned their machine off before the nightly push, who has admin rights, etc. Map to the drive and you are off and running. One big performance hit is running the jvm from a shared drive. The JVM should be installed locally.

  • Create a custom dock/application icon for .jar files built in eclipse

I've spent the better part of the afternoon trying to figure out how to apply a custom icon to jar file that I created in eclipse. I am presently using eclipse v3.5 on Mac OS X 10.6.2 and have yet to find a way to change the java coffee cup logo in the document icon for my jar files created in eclipse. Is there some way I can call a specific Apple class in Eclipse to change the dock/application icon of my .jar file?
I found this link that uses a class that seems to be specific to XCode to change the icon of the .jar file.
What I mean by change the icon of the jar file, I mean change the icon used in the dock, and also the icon used when the "command+tab" switcher pops up. Presently, I have the black console icon with the text "exec" in the upperleft.
If anyone has any good links on this topic or even better knows the code I need insert into my program I would be highly greatful.
    cheers

  • Problem when downloading the JAR file

I'm just install JRE and testing my first applet application. I'm facing the problem that I can not download the JAR file from my localhost computer.
I've enable cache in Java Control Panel and running my applet. Normally, it will download the jar file from my localhost and save it to the cache directory of Java. And then finding all classes neccessary to run my applet in the JAR file.
But I discover that I can not download the JAR file and save to my computer. I try to put the URL to download this JAR file (http://localhost/myjar.jar) in my web address, it start to download this file properly. But when open it with WINRAR, I got an error that the file "Unexpected end of file".
I try to put this file from onther computer in my LAN. And use the URL to download it. This time I can open the JAR file with WINRAR althrought the file size is the same
Anyone know why there are some errors when download from my localhost? Thanks in advance for any help!!!

    Yeah everything matches up!
Could it have something to do with the string encoding? I created the file in ANSI format? Would this have an effect on it?

  • Could not read Log4j configuration file when I run jar file

    Hi,
I'm using Log4J in my application..
    I configure the log4j, as follows;
PropertyConfigurator.configure("properties/logging.properties");and then go on to use it.
The .properties is in the root when I jar my source. I use Ant to Jar the file. It all works good when I run the jar file from ant.
The problem is when I run the jar file by double clicking on it, I get an error
" Could not read configuration file [properties/logging.properties]."
    I tried the following options;
    PropertyConfigurator.configure("/logging.properties");
    PropertyConfigurator.configure("./logging.properties");
PropertyConfigurator.configure("../logging.properties");But in all cases, I get corresponding errors on running the jar file through Ant:
log4j:ERROR Could not read configuration file [logging.properties].
log4j:ERROR Could not read configuration file [./logging.properties].
log4j:ERROR Could not read configuration file [../logging.properties].
I want to be able to run the Jar by double clicking on it or through Ant.. Would any one know how to fix this issue so that I can use both methods..

Keep your properties file inside the root folder of your application. It is working fine

  • Applets don't see each other when having certain jar files as archive

    Hi,
I have read a nice solution for Applet2Applet communication when they are on different html pages (different frames or windows) at http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/javatips/jw-javatip101.html.
They see each other through a static AppletManager. The idea is working it is really good.
But when I add a certain jar file to the archive parameter they don't see each other any more. Even more the static initializer of the AppletManager class runs twice. I have also noticed that the ClassLoader of the two applet is different:
    LeftApplet: ClassLoader: sun.plugin.security.PluginClassLoader@10a6ae2
    RightApplet: ClassLoader: sun.plugin.security.PluginClassLoader@13adc56
If I remove that particular jar from the archive parameter they are the same:
    LeftApplet: ClassLoader: sun.plugin.security.PluginClassLoader@13adc56
    RightApplet: ClassLoader: sun.plugin.security.PluginClassLoader@13adc56
and the two applets can communicate again.
And here comes the fun the two applet doesn't use anything from that jar package...
I would appreciate any help, or link where I could go on whit this issue.
    Attila

If the jar lists are not identical in each Applet, different classloaders are used:
archive = "a.jar,b.jar,c.jar" in Applet A, means that in Applet B you must have archive = "a.jar,b.jar,c.jar" or a separate class loader will be used. Do this even if your applets don't use any classes in an included jar.
