Creating a word-based guessing game

Hi...
I'm currently producing a experimental flash project, which
involves both comic-book style imagery, animation and
puzzle-solving whereby the user must solve a riddle in order to
progress through the story. Of course, the whole project involves
one bit of Actionscript 2 on each page in order to get it to work
but so far I've only been able to find code for a guessing game
with numbers.
The following code is how I've tried to handle this: I'm
fairly new to Actionscript so please forgive me! I've attached this
code to my "answer_btn" button. "Input" refers to the input textbox
in which the correct answer must be typed.
Thanks for your help!

Input is not the same as input.
if input is the instance name of your textfield, you need to
use its text property. if input is the variable associated with
your textfield, you're ok.
you have a paranthesis mismatch on your 2nd line of code.
remove one right paranthesis.
if your button is a true button (not a movieclip button),
you're directing the parent timeline of the timeline that contains
your button to play "riddle_story".

  • How to create a turn-based multiplayer online game?

    Hello. This is my first time here. I am familiar with programming games and have been doing so for 20 years. However, I'm completely new to using Java to do so. In the past, I wrote games in BASIC, Blitz, and C++ using DirectX. Being familiar with C/C++, the Java language syntax is not a hurdle for me.
    I've never created a networking game, but I feel that if I tried to create one using one of the programming languages I already know that I would succeed at doing so. (I'm just trying to show that I feel confident in programming with the languages that i know)
    The dilemma here is that someone else would like me to program a turn'based multiplayer game for them in Java.
    I've downloaded the NetBeans 4.1 IDE and uncovered a lot of terms and such that I'm unfamiliar with.
    What I'm looking for from you guys is an overview of what I need to do to achieve my ultimate goal of creating this online game.
    As a reference, I need to create a game very similar to this one:
    http://www.tacticsarena.com/play/
    Click on the "Launch Game: Tactics Arena Online" link to see the game.
    Create a new account to play (accounts are free).
    Upon starting the NetBeans IDE, I found that I could create several different types of projects. I guess first of all, I need to know what kind of project is best suited to make this type of game.
    To name a few, I have to select from:
    Java Application
    Java Class Library (is this an Applet?)
    Web Application
    Enterprise Application
    EJB Module
    Then I guess I would like to know if any of the above projects would be used to make the clients interface or the server side software or both? Or do I need to use some other kind of software/programming language/etc. to create the server side? (As a side note, typically what kind of Operating system would the server be using? I ask because I may set one up myself for testing purposes.)
    Somewhere I came upon the term 'Servlet'. Is this some kind of Java server application? Do I need/want to be using this?
    As you can see, I'm very lost at where to begin. I'm not at all unfamiliar with programming. I'm just unfamiliar with Java.

    Hi WolRon
    I am in the process of learning Java myself and from what i have read, you have a long road ahead of you!
    To start this Project the following will be essential for you to know:
    Applets - if this is going to an online game
    Multiple Threads - for the Server side
    Swing - for the GUI on both sides
    AWT - help work with the user input (mouseListeners, buttonListeners, etc)
    And knowledge of a database.
    those are the most obvious things that you will need to understand.
    I strongly suggest buying a Java book from which you need to start at the beginning. Although the concept of OOP is the same through most languages Java has terms - as do all languages- that will be different from the other languages. Starting at the beginning will be beneficial to your Java coding future.
    Good luck.

  • Word guessing game Flash Develop as3

    I am coding a word guessing game for primary level age 5/6. They have to guess a five letter word by looking at the image. I want to provide a clue button, which when clicked will give the user one correct letter. There are five words contained in an array. I want to give one letter as a clue. Here is my current code (not completed). If anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated as havn't done this before!!
                        public function clue(event:MouseEvent):void {
                                  for (var  i : uint = 0; i < 5; i++)
                                  if (this["text" + i].text != currentWord.charAt(i))
                                                                //changing colour to red
                                                                trace ("checking if equal");
                                                                this ["button" + i] = setImage("../images/red2.png", 405 + (40 * i), 600);
                                                                this["button" + i].visible = true;
                                                                //need to give the user one correct letter
                                                                ["Text"+i] == currentWord.charAt(i)

    Hi Ned,
         Mt current Word is the current word in my Array which could be any out of 5. The current letter was i was trying to get a letter out of the current Word in the array and provide one correct letter as a clue to the user. The text+i is the letter/word at position i in the array. I basically took my method for search for char and tried to change it for searching for letters instead of words but not really sure what i am doing. Here is search for char code i was basing the other one on. This method checks the letters inputed into the 5 textfields against the current word in the array and changes coloured cirlces underneath each letter to yellow if correct and red if incorrect.
    public function searchForChar(evt:MouseEvent):void {
                                  trace ("coming in here");
                                  //make sure all text fields have been entered
                                  for (var  i : uint = 0; i < 5; i++)
                                            trace ("looping");
                                            //if letter is right
                                            if (this["text" + i].text == currentWord.charAt(i))
                                                      //changing colour to yellow
                                                      trace ("checking if equal");
                                                      this ["button" + i] = setImage("../images/yellow2.png", 405 + (40 * i), 600);
                                                      this["button"+i].visible = true;
                                                      else
                                                                if (this["text" + i].text != currentWord.charAt(i))
                                                                //changing colour to red
                                                                trace ("checking if equal");
                                                                this ["button" + i] = setImage("../images/red2.png", 405 + (40 * i), 600);
                                                                this["button" + i].visible = true;

    Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
    However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
    What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
    It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
    Anyone know if this is a known issue?
    Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

    Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

  • Is there a way to create a collection based on the "previous import"?

    is there a way to create a collection based on the "previous import"? that would make it easy to mobile sync the last import to my ipad, and do further picking/rejecting while away from my laptop.

    well, yes, of course i could do it that way. i guess i wasn't specific enough. is there a way to create a smart collection, with the photos in the "previous import" as members of the smart collection.  earlier i mentioned about using this smart collection to mobile sync with my ipad, to do further flagging.
    so my intention, use a smart collection to mobile sync with my ipad, and the smart collection to include the photos from my previous import.
    i guess another way to ask the question, is there a way to create a smart collection, by using some rule or condition in the smart collection, to automatically include previous import photos.
    the documentation says that "previous import" is a collection, even though it shows up in the catalogue side bar section. but i see no way to choose that collection when making a smart collection.

  • OLE2 Doc/Code snippet to assist in creating a word doc with underlined text

    I would like to use OLE2 to create a simple Word document. I would like some of the text to be bold/underlined and the rest of the text to be regular. There seems to be a serious dearth of information regarding OLE2 in conjunction with PS/SQL in Word applications. We're running Forms 6 and Oracle 9i.
    I don't believe that I need to use the techniques described in the Forms Manual (OLE2 containers, etc.). I have managed to create a Word doc and write some text to it but I've been unable to find out/guess at the syntax that I'd need to control bolding and underlining. It would be a big help if I could just find the syntax for Word OLE2 commands. During my documentation search, I seem to remember a post that mentioned 'Reference 2' and maybe 'Reference 3' as a source of information related to OLE2 in PL/SQL code. If anyone can give me a shove in the right direction I'm more than willing to read the manuals. I won't be too disappointed if someone could send me a code snippet either!
    Thanks,
    Ron Walker

    Hi Ron,
    Office ships with a number of resources that you will find indispensable for the sort of work you're doing. Take a look at the VBA IDE (Visual Basic for Applications IDE). You may already be familiar with it, if you've ever written a Word macro, but to call it a macro editor sells it short -- it is a full-blown development environment. Its Object Browser allows you to browse Word's object model, search by keyword, and view call syntax.
    In case you aren't familiar with the VBA IDE, try this:
    1. Open Word
    2. Switch between Word and the VBA IDE by pressing <Alt><F11>
    3. Open the Object Browser by pressing <F2>
    Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the Object Browser. Constrain its scope by selecting the Word library instead of <All Libraries> (the default). Learn to search by keyword. Click on items within your results for details. If Visual Basic Help is installed, pressing <F1> will raise help on a selected item.
    Visual Basic Help may not be part of the Compact or Typical install. Running Office Setup, either from the install CD, or through Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel, will allow you to add the feature. (The Office installer lists Visual Basic Help in the Office Tools section.)
    I have found the VBA IDE to be the perfect place for prototyping and testing automated processes. It is a far friendlier environment for learning Office automation, as it offers code completion and context-driven help. Once the process works, I manually translate my VBA routine into Forms PL/SQL, which is fairly painless. I've written a short tutorial, that I will post shortly -- I didn't want to bury it in this thread!
    Hope this helps,

  • Can I create a report based on Non-Oracle template?

    Hi:
    I have a Microsoft Word document that contains the entire layout of a report I need to create with Oracle Report 6i. I know that I can create a report based on a template, but as I understand it, I am limited to using Oracle Reports templates. Does Reports support using foreign templates? Thanks for any word in this manner.
    Thomas Morgan
    :)

    oracle reports does not support using ms word documents as templates. there is a product in the oracle applications stack, XML publisher, that allows you to inject data into a word template.
    thanks,
    ph.

  • Need help with " Number guessing game " please?

    This is what teacher requires us to do for this assignment:
    Write a program that plays a simple number guessing game. In this game the user will think of a number and the program will do the guessing. After each guess from the program, the user will either indicate that the guess is correct (by typing c), or that the next guess should be higher (by typing h), or that it should be lower (by typing l). Here is a sample output for a game. In this particular game the user thinks of the number 30:
    $java GuessingGameProgram
    Guess a number between 0 and 100
    Is it 50? (h/l/c): l
    Is it 25? (h/l/c): h
    Is it 37? (h/l/c): l
    Is it 31? (h/l/c): l
    Is it 28? (h/l/c): h
    Is it 29? (h/l/c): h
    Is it 30? (h/l/c): c
    Thank you for playing.
    $
    This program is implementing a binary search algorithm, dividing the range of possible values in half with each guess. You can implement any algorithm that you want, but, all things being equal, binary search is the best algorithm.
    Write the program so that the functionality is split between two classes: GuessingGameProgram, and NumberGuesser.
    GuessingGameProgram will only be used for its main function. It should instantiate a NumberGuesser, and it will be responsible for the loop that notifies the user of the next guess, reads the h, l, or c from the user, and sends an appropriate message to the number guesser accordingly.
    The guesses themselves should all be generated by the NumberGuesser class. Here is a diagram of the members and methods for the class. Notice that the members are unspecified. Feel free to give your NumberGuesser class any members (which we have also been calling fields, or instance variables) that you find useful. Make them all private.
    NumberGuesser
    NumberGuesser(int upperLimit, int lowerLimit)
    int guess()
    void higher()
    void lower()
    The constructor should take two integer arguments, a lower and upper bound for the guesses. In your program the constructor will be called with bounds of 0 and 100.
    The guess method should return the same value if it is called more than once without intervening calls to the lower or higher methods. The class should only change its guess when it receives a message indicating that its next guess should be higher or lower.
    Enjoy. Focus your attention on the NumberGuesser class. It is more interesting than the GuessingGameProgram class because it is a general-purpose class, potentially useful to anybody who is writing a number guessing game. Imagine, for instance, that a few weeks from now you are asked to write a number guessing game with a graphical Java Applet front end. If you NumberGuesser class is well written, you may be able to reuse it without any modifications.
    I'm new to JAVA and I'm set with my 2nd homework where I'm so confused. I know how to do something of this source in C language, but I'm a bit confused with Java. This is the code me and my classmate worked on, I know it's not 100% of what teacher asked, but is there any way possibly you guys could help me? I wrote this program if the game is played less then 10 times, thought I would then re-create a program without it, but now I'm confused, and my class book has nothing about this :( and I'm so confused and lost, can you please help? And out teacher told us that it's due the end of this week :( wish I knew what to do. Thank you so so much.
    Here's the code:
    import java.text.*;
    import java.io.*;
    class GuessingGame
    public static void main( String[] args ) throws IOException
    BufferedReader stdin = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader( System.in ) );
    int guess = 0, limit = 9, x = 0, n, a = 0 ;
    double val = 0 ;
    String inputData;
    for ( x = 1; x <= 10; x++)      //number of games played
    System.out.println("round " + x + ":");
    System.out.println(" ");
    System.out.println("I am thinking of a number from 1 to 10. ");
    System.out.println("You must guess what it is in three tries. ");
    System.out.println("Enter a guess: ");
    inputData = stdin.readLine();
    guess = Integer.parseInt( inputData );
    val = Math.random() * 10 % limit + 1;     //max limit is set to 9
    NumberFormat nf = NumberFormat.getNumberInstance();
    nf.setMaximumFractionDigits(0);               //format number of decimal places
    String s = nf.format(val);
    val = Integer.parseInt( s );
         for ( n = 1; n <= 3; n++ )      //number of guess's made
                   if ( guess == val)
                        System.out.println("RIGHT!!");                    //if guess is right
                        a = a + 1;
                        System.out.println("You have won " + a + " out of " + x + " rounds");
    System.out.println(" ");
    n = 3;
    continue;
              if (n == 3 && guess != val)                         //3 guesses and guess is wromg
                        System.out.println("wrong");
    System.out.println("The correct number was " + val);
                        System.out.println("You have won " + a + " out of " + x + " rounds");
    System.out.println(" ");
    continue;
                   //how close guess is to value
                   if ( guess == val - 1 || val + 1 == guess) //Within 1
                   System.out.println("hot");
         else if ( guess == val - 2 || val + 2 == guess) // Within 2
                   System.out.println("warm");
              else
                   System.out.println("cold");                         // Greater than 3
         inputData = stdin.readLine();
         guess = Integer.parseInt( inputData );
    //ratings
    if ( a <= 7)
         System.out.println("Your rating is: imbecile.");
    else if ( a <= 8)
         System.out.println("Your rating is: getting better but, dumb.");
    else if (a <= 9)
         System.out.println("Your rating is: high school grad.");
    else if ( a == 10)
         System.out.println("Your rating is: College Grad.!!!");

    Try this.
    By saying that, I expect you ,and your classmate(s), to study this example and then write your own. Hand it in as-is and you'll be rumbled as a homework-cheat in about 20ms ;)
    When you have an attempt where you can explain, without refering to notes, every single line, you've cracked it.
    Also (hint) comment your version well so your tutor is left with the impression you know what you're doing.
    In addition (huge hint) do not leave the static inner class 'NumberGuesser' where it is. Read your course notes and find out where distinct classes should go.
    BTW - Ever wonder if course tutors scan this forum for students looking for help and/or cheating?
    It's a double edged sword for you newbies. If you ask a sensible, well researched question, get helpful answers and apply them to your coursework, IMHO you should get credit for doing that.
    On the other hand, if you simply post your assignment and sit there hoping some sucker like me will do it for you, you should be taken aside and given a good kicking - or whatever modern educational establishments consider appropriate abmonishment ;)
    I'd say this posting is, currently, slap bang between the two extreemes, so impress us. Post your solution in the form you intend to hand it in, and have us comment on it.
    Good luck!

    Narayan wrote: But you need some server script/programming like Servlet,PHP.You may use Servlet or PHP like Narayan stated before, but i would recomend JAVA RMI for the "Client to Server" or "Client to Client" - communication. The Advantage of using RMI in Javafx is you don´t need anny extra or external 3rd party lib. RMI is core Java.
    If you need a Sample just google around there a plenty of tutorials. and they are all written in pure java.

  • Best way to create a table based on another table

    Hello,
    I am trying to create a table based on another table with all the data in it. It has large data.
    create table <tablename> as select * from table1.
    Is this the best way of doing it or is there any other way. please advice.
    thanks

    I am suggested to create new table as
    create table <newtable> as
    select * from <oldtable> where rownum < 1;
    then
    alter table <newtable> compress;
    then
    insert /*+ append */ into <newtable> as select * from <oldtable>;
    but i getting an error saying missing values key words ora- 00926.
    please advice

  • Howto create special level based measure

    Hi all
    I have a geography dimension :
    All
    -Region
    --coutry
    ---store
    I'm reporting the sales per year:
    I need to create a measure that able the user to display 'shareof sales' for every level in the hierarchy.
    In other words In need a logical column that allows the user to see :
    store sales /total of 'country sales '
    country sales /total of 'Region sales'
    Region sales/total of 'All sales'
    I created 3 level based measure with different levels for every one and calculate the 3 'shareof sales'.I had a correct result But the user wants to have only one logical column representing all the combinations and using different levels of the hierarchy as lowest level .
    Is it possible to create this kind of calculation?

    Thanks stijn
    Yes he wants "sales by store"/"total country sales" when a store is in the report and "sales by country"/"total region sales" when country is in the report, but he also wants to "sales by lowest level of detail" / "sales by lowest + 2 level of detail" when store is in the report and this using the same logical column.
    But how do you create a measure which is aggregated by the lowest +1 level of detail?
    No i didn't create this aggregation and I don't know if it's possible.so I don't realy have "sales by country"/"total region sales" when country is in the report.
    Do you know what I mean? So actually you want the BI Server to find out what the higher level in the hierarchy is. I'm not aware of a function which could do this.
    Actually as you said is their any way to make the server aware of this or every thing need to be decided in the repository before??

  • Guessing Game Problem

    I'm having a problem thinking of a way to think of a solution to this. Basically, what I am trying to do is have a guessing game with the computer. What happens is I think of a number from 1000 to 9999, let's say 3741. Then the computer randomnly guesses from an ArrayList of 1000-9999, and asks if its the right number, or not. Let's say the computer guesses 5312. I would respond by saying how many matches there are 0-4, in this case 4. Then my idea is to update the arrayList, by deleting all the necessary values. I would do this continuously until one number is left, which would be the correct answer. I am trying to think of an algorithm that would do this in 15 guesses or less (aiming for 10ish).
    My code so far:
    // fill in your information in the line below, and comment it out in order to compile
    // Name: ???   Student ID: ???;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    import java.util.Random;
    import javax.swing.JOptionPane;
    public class Assignment2 {
    private int totalGuesses;
    private ArrayList<Integer> guess;
    private int myGuess;
    public Assignment2 ( ){
    totalGuesses = 0;
    myGuess = 0;
    guess = new ArrayList<Integer>();
    for(int i = 1000; i <= 9999 ; i++) // Adds numbers 1000 to 9999 initially.
       guess.add(i);
    public int myGuessIs() {
      return myGuess;
    public int totalNumGuesses() {
      return totalGuesses;
    public void updateMyGuess(int nmatches) {
      // fill in code here
      // update the guess based on the number of matches claimed by the user
    if(guess.size() == 0)
      myGuess = -1;
    // you shouldn't need to change the main function
    public static void main(String[] args) {
      Assignment2 gamer = new Assignment2( );
      JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Think of a number between 1000 and 9999.\n Click OK when you are ready...", "Let's play a game", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE);
      int numMatches = 0;
      int myguess = 0;
      do {
       myguess = gamer.myGuessIs();
       if (myguess == -1) {
        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "I don't think your number exists.\n I could be wrong though...", "Mistake", JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE);
        System.exit(0);
       String userInput = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("I guess your number is " + myguess + ". How many digits did I guess correctly?");
       // quit if the user input nothing (such as pressed ESC)
       if (userInput == null)
        System.exit(0);
       // parse user input, pop up a warning message if the input is invalid
       try {
        numMatches = Integer.parseInt(userInput.trim());
       catch(Exception exception) {
        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Your input is invalid. Please enter a number between 0 and 4", "Warning", JOptionPane.WARNING_MESSAGE);
        numMatches = 0;
       // the number of matches must be between 0 and 4
       if (numMatches < 0 || numMatches > 4) {
        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Your input is invalid. Please enter a number between 0 and 4", "Warning", JOptionPane.WARNING_MESSAGE);
        numMatches = 0;
       if (numMatches == 4)
        break;
       // update based on user input
       gamer.updateMyGuess(numMatches);
      } while (true);
      // the game ends when the user says all 4 digits are correct
      System.out.println("Aha, I got it, your number is " + myguess + ".");
      System.out.println("I did it in " + gamer.totalNumGuesses() + " turns.");
    Obviously, I'm having trouble thinking of a solution to updateMyGuess...I don't know why but I'm most likely making this way harder than it actually is.. Can anyone help?

    What if computer's guess is 2795. I assume number of matches then would be 1 (the 7). How exactly is your code going to know that 7 is the lone match and not the 2 or the 9 or the 5?

  • Use xml file to create a word/pdf document

    i have a xml doument created using jdom i need to create a word or a pdf document from this file
    is there a way to tackle this using java? or what else would you recomend?

    Without knowing any details, I would guess that you have a couple of options;
    Parse the xml using SAX or some similar tool and use the data recovered to create the document using an existing API; HWPF for example would allow you to create a simple Word documnet or, if you were much braver, you could use the SWT to 'drive' Word using OLE/COM.
    If you are very lucky and the xml document conforms to the format Word has recently begun to recognise, you could just try opening the document in Word using the Desktop class.
    As far as I am aware, there is no one tool that will do all of this for you. Of course, you could try using Google of visiting Sourceforge to see if anyone is working on such an application.

  • Flex BlazeDS based Poker game

    I am working on a Flex Java based poker game where multiple tables need to be created and people are placed on the tables depending on the table availability. I am facing issues adding people from resource pool to the tables. Any one worked on something similar? Any tutorials, examples or code snippets would be helpful.

    Rjoshicool, I think people are misinterpreting your explanation (simply because of the crossover of terminology) and you are on the right track.
    If I understand it correctly:
    You have a multiple number of poker Games. These are Tournaments rather than individual games.
    Each tournament has multiple poker tables associated with it and multiple players on each poker table. All players are associated with a tournament, game and table. This association is going to change over time and for the tournament as a whole.
    Database tables:
    You will need at least
    A tournament table, a poker_table table, player table, game_table. You are going to need a load of other tables to hold information about anscillary items perhaps - for example there may be a league, poker_team, etc. I don't know.
    In a multiple user system you need to take care of people disconnecting unexpectedly, wanting to get back to a game if accidentally disconnected, wanting to pause play, chat, etc.
    Most importantly you must be able to prevent concurrent updates of the database tables since you have multiple players effectively updating the state of a game/table.
    It can all get quite complex, quickly.

  • How to create a report based on a DataSet programatically

    I'm working on a CR 2008 Add-in.
    Usage of this add-in is: Let the user choose from a list of predefined datasets, and create a totally empty report with this dataset attached to is. So the user can create a report based on this dataset.
    I have a dataset in memory, and want to create a new report in cr2008.
    The new report is a blank report (with no connection information).
    If I set the ReportDocument.SetDataSource(Dataset dataSet) property, I get the error:
    The report has no tables.
    So I must programmatically define the table definition in my blank report.
    I found the following article: https://boc.sdn.sap.com/node/869, and came up with something like this:
    internal class NewReportWorker : Worker
          public NewReportWorker(string reportFileName)
             : base(reportFileName)
    public override void Process()
             DatabaseController databaseController = ClientDoc.DatabaseController;
             Table table = new Table();
             string tabelName = "Table140";
             table.Name = tabelName;
             table.Alias = tabelName;
             table.QualifiedName = tabelName;
             table.Description = tabelName;
             var fields = new Fields();
             var dbField = new DBField();
             var fieldName = "ID";
             dbField.Description = fieldName;
             dbField.HeadingText = fieldName;
             dbField.Name = fieldName;
             dbField.Type = CrFieldValueTypeEnum.crFieldValueTypeInt64sField;
             fields.Add(dbField);
             dbField = new DBField();
             fieldName = "IDLEGITIMATIEBEWIJS";
             dbField.Description = fieldName;
             dbField.HeadingText = fieldName;
             dbField.Name = fieldName;
             dbField.Type = CrFieldValueTypeEnum.crFieldValueTypeInt64sField;
             fields.Add(dbField);
             // More code for more tables to add.
             table.DataFields = fields;
             //CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.DataDefModel.ConnectionInfo info =
             //   new CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.DataDefModel.ConnectionInfo();
             //info.Attributes.Add("Databse DLL", "xxx.dll");
             //table.ConnectionInfo = info;
             // Here an error occurs.
             databaseController.AddTable(table, null);
             ReportDoc.SetDataSource( [MyFilledDataSet] );
             //object path = @"d:\logfiles\";
             //ClientDoc.SaveAs("test.rpt", ref path, 0);
    The object ClientDoc referes to a ISCDReportClientDocument in a base class:
       internal abstract class Worker
          private ReportDocument _ReportDoc;
          private ISCDReportClientDocument _ClientDoc;
          private string _ReportFileName;
          public Worker(string reportFileName)
             _ReportFileName = reportFileName;
             _ReportDoc = new ReportDocument();
             // Load the report from file path passed by the designer.
             _ReportDoc.Load(reportFileName);
             // Create a RAS Document through In-Proc RAS through the RPTDoc.
             _ClientDoc = _ReportDoc.ReportClientDocument;
          public string ReportFileName
             get
                return _ReportFileName;
          public ReportDocument ReportDoc
             get
                return _ReportDoc;
          public ISCDReportClientDocument ClientDoc
             get
                return _ClientDoc;
    But I get an "Unspecified error" on the line databaseController.AddTable(table, null);
    What am i doing wrong? Or is there another way to create a new report based on a DataSet in C# code?

    Hi,
    Have a look at the snippet code below written for version 9 that you might accommodate to CR 2008, it demonstrates how to create a report based on a DataSet programmatically.
