Creating an Array of Strings

Does anyone know how to create an array of three strings? I need to then prompt a user for the three strings and enter them into the array...No idea how to code this at all.

i'm not quite sure about your problem,anyway i've posted a snippet hope this helps,if not explain in detail.. :)
import java.io.*;
class ts{
     public static void main(String as[]) throws Exception{
          int j=3;//no of strings to be inputted i.e 3 in ur case
          String sArray[]=new String[j];
          for(int i=0;i<j;i++){
          BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader
         (new InputStreamReader(System.in));
          System.out.println("Enter name"+(i+1));
          sArray[i] = reader.readLine();
          for(int i=0;i<j;i++){
               System.out.println("array name"+(i+1)+" = "+sArray);

    This code is badly broken. In addition to resizing the actual handle to hold the number of string handles you also would need to create the string handles itself before attempting to write into them. NumericArrayResize is the fucntion to use as it will either resize an existing handle (if any) or create a new one if the value is uninitialized (NULL).
    /* resize strarr to hold handles to NUMSTRINGS strings */
    err = SetCINArraySize((UHandle)strarr, 0, NUMSTRINGS);
    if (err)
    goto out;
    /* perform this loop once for each element */
    /* of array of strings being created */
    for (i = 0; i < NUMSTRINGS;) {
    LStrHandle handle = (*strarr)->arg1[i];
    /* determine length of string that will be element of strarr */
    strsize = StrLen(str[i]);
    err = NumericArrayResize(uB, 1, &handle, strsize);
    if (err)
    goto out;
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    /* moves strsize bytes from the address pointed to */
    /* by str[i] to the address pointed to by the data pointer in the handle */
    MoveBlock(str[i], LStrBuf(*handle), strsize);
    /* manually set size of string pointed to by *strarr */
    (*((*strarr)->arg1[i]))->cnt = strsize;
    /* manually set dimSize of strarr */
    (*strarr)->dimSize = ++i;
    return noErr;
    out:
    return err;

  • How can I create a custom data type that is a 2D array of string by using TestStand API?

    Hi all,
    I'm new in TestStand:
    I'm able to create a custom data type that is a 1D array of string but I cannot find the way to create a 2D array of string.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thank you in advance.
    Federico

    I made it!!
    Indeed my 2D array is an item of a container:
    /*  Create a new container */
    RunState.Engine.NewPropertyObject(Locals.NewDataType,PropValType_Container,False,"",0)
    /*  Create an array of strings as item of the container */
    Locals.NewDataType.NewSubProperty("Array_2D",PropValType_String,True,"",0)
    /*  Reshape the array as an empty 2D array */
    Locals.NewDataType.GetPropertyObject("Array_2D",0).Type.ArrayDimensions.SetBoundsByStrings("[0][0]","[][]")
    being:
    NewDataType a local property (type Object)

  • How do I create an array with variables also splits words  in a txtfile?

    Hello guys,
    I made a script that reads a text file.

    I wonder how do I sort the content in array
    in this order, also creates variables for each string.
    var= string 1[~/Desktop/3.indd]

    Thank you in advance people.

    Hmmh?
    Jump_Over said it before: „… are stored as separate array's elements …“ in your [textArr]
    So you can create now variables on this way:
    var string_1 = textArr[0]; // and so on
    alert(string_1);
    See Java Scripting reference for more examples how to use Arrays.

  • Easy way to create a list of strings in an object?

    I'm trying to create a HashSet of Strings but I don't want to have to add each string to the HashSet. There is a constructor for HashSet that allows you to give it a Collection. But how can I create a Collection of String other than having to add each string? Can I just :
    HashSet hs = new HashSet("String1", "String2", "String3", "String4");
    ?

    This programming problem is as old as the hills, and there are a zillion ways to do it. One of the simplest is by using String.split. Example:   String separator = "[^\\w]+";
       String string = "I think, therefore I am; or maybe not. What do you think?";
       String[] array = string.split(separator);
       System.out.println("String    : \"" + string + "\"");
       System.out.println("Word count: " + array.length + " words.");The key is the String separator. This is what is known as a "regular expression." It looks pretty obtuse (and is); do some research on regular expressions to figure out it means.
    This example does not account for a few special cases, such as words split between lines with hyphens, and perhaps words enclosed in double quotes. That is left as an exercise for the reader.

  • How to create an array with Generic type?

    Hi,
    I need to create a typed array T[] from an object array Object[]. This is due to legacy code integration with older collections.
    The method signature is simple:public static <T> T[] toTypedArray(Object[] objects)I tried using multiple implementations and go over them in the debugger. None of them create a typed collection as far as I can tell. The type is always Object[].
    A simple implementation is just to cast the array and return, however this is not so safe.
    What is interesting is that if I create ArrayList<String>, the debugger shows the type of the array in the list as String[].
    If I create ArrayList<T>, the class contains Object[] and not T[].
    I also triedT[] array = (T[]) Array.newInstance(T[].class.getComponentType(), objects.length);And a few other combinations. All work at runtime, create multiple compilation warnings, and none actually creates T[] array at runtime.
    Maybe I am missing something, but Array.newInstace(...) is supposed to create a typed array, and I cannot see any clean way to pass Class<T> into it.T[].class.getComponentType()Returns something based on object and not on T, and T.class is not possible.
    So is there anything really wrong here, or should I simply cast the array and live with the warnings?
    Any help appreciated!

    Ok. May be you could keep information about generic type in the your class:
    public class Util {
        public static <T> T[] toTypedArray(Class<T> cls, Object[] objects){
            int size = objects.length;
            T[] t = (T[]) java.lang.reflect.Array.newInstance(cls, size);
            System.arraycopy(objects, 0, t, 0, size);
            return t;
    public class Sample<T> {
        Class<T> cls;
        T[] array;
        public Sample(Class<T> cls) {
            this.cls = cls;
        public void setArray(Object[] objects){
            array = Util.toTypedArray(cls, objects);
        public T[] getArray(){
            return array;
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            Object[] objects = new Object[] { new LinkedList(), new ArrayList()};
            Sample<List> myClass = new  Sample<List>(List.class);
            myClass.setArray(objects);
            for(List elem: myClass.getArray()){
                System.out.println(elem.getClass().getName());
    }

  • [CS3][JS] How to turn negative number in array into string

    Hello,
    I have a script that compares the array of the geometric bounds of all text frames to the margins for a document (all pages having the same margins). Any frames that do not match the margins are flagged.
    In order to compare the array of text frame geometric bounds to two arrays of margins (because they are facing pages), I have to convert the numbers to strings.
    My problem is that in the following snippet of code that creates the two margin arrays, the negative of the variables become numbers again. This would not be too difficult to solve except that all the numbers have to be 4 decimal points before converted to strings.
    Thanks,
    Tom
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var marginY1 = myDoc.pages.item(0).marginPreferences.top.toFixed(4);
    var marginX1 = myDoc.pages.item(0).marginPreferences.left.toFixed(4);
    var marginY2 = (myDoc.documentPreferences.pageHeight - myDoc.pages.item(0).marginPreferences.bottom).toFixed(4);
    var marginX2 = (myDoc.documentPreferences.pageWidth - myDoc.pages.item(0).marginPreferences.right).toFixed(4);
    var marginsRHand = [marginY1, marginX1, marginY2, marginX2];
    var marginsLHand = [marginY1, -marginX2, marginY2, -marginX1];

    Well, I think I have solved it. But I don't know why this solves it.
    I would think that in the above script all the variables would be numbers and not strings. But the data browser says they are strings.
    The solution is:
    var marginsLHand = [marginY1, Number(-marginX2).toFixed(4), marginY2, Number(-marginX1).toFixed(4)]
    If someone can explain why now all variables in the arrays are strings and not numbers, I'll be happy.

  • Array of strings to vector

    Hi,
    I have an array of strings like:
    private String myStrArr[];
    myStrArr = new String[256];
    I have to get rid of hard coded size.
    Is it ok to use vector instead , or is there another way to get rid of hard coded size.
    If we can use vector instead , is there a solution similar for booleans??
    I also have an array of booleans:
    private boolean myBoolArr[];
    myBoolArr = new boolean[256]

    You can wrap the primitive booleans you have in the Boolean class via
    myList.add(new Boolean(primitiveBooleanValue));Even better, to save space, use the already existing Boolean values instead of creating new ones. If you are using Java 1.4, you can:
    myList.add(Boolean.valueOf(primitiveBooleanValue));Otherwise you can do one of these:
    myList.add( primitiveBooleanValue ? Boolean.TRUE : Boolean.FALSE );

  • How to create an array of generics?

    I have the following snippet of code using array of vectors:

    tmpArr[j] = new Vector();
    String str = ...

    tmpArr[j] = new Vector<String>();

    If I change it in
    Vector<String>[] tmpArr = new Vector<String>[n];
    (as I've seen in a pdf by G.Bracha talking aout collections)
    it gives me the error:
    -->cannot find symbol

    row.
    The only way it seems to work is
    Vector<String>[] tmpArr = new Vector[n];
    but it gives me the unchecked conversion warning.
    How can I create an array of generics?
    Thank you!
    Matteo

    You can't
    Actually, that depends on the exact definition of a generic array. If by generic array someone means "an array comprised of elements defined by a type parameter", there is a solution.
    import java.lang.reflect.Array;
    public class Something<T> {
        private final Class<T> type;
        public Something(Class<T> type) {
            this.type = type;
        public String getTypeName() {
            return this.type.getName();
        public T[] newArray(final int length) {
            return (T[]) Array.newInstance(this.type, length);
    }The constructor introduces the type information (T) to the runtime environment, which means an instance of Something will know its type. Method newArray therefore does not cause a warning on unchecked type conversion, so this approach is typesafe.
    // Type parameter class is demanded by constructor...
    Something<String> stringThing = new Something<String>(String.class);
    // Cheating won't work, because the compiler catches the error...
    Something<Vector> vectorThing = new Something<Vector>(Integer.class);This approach, however, doesn't enable you to create an array of typed elements (like Vector<String>[]). If that is the definition of a generic array, then it is indeed not possible to create one.
    After all, while Vector[].class exists and can be resolved at runtime, there's no such thing as Vector<String>[].class, so there's no way you could provide the class definition of the component type to the constructor of Something.
    This may be a surprise to mdt_java, because if I remember correctly, templates in C++ cause actually different classes to be created for 'generic' types. This is not the case with Java.
