Creating interval parition to existing range partition

I have a table which has range partition on a number column.
CREATE TABLE TEST(
id INT NOT NULL,
start INT NOT NULL
PARTITION BY RANGE (start)
     PARTITION old_Data VALUES LESS THAN (1000000) TABLESPACE old,
     PARTITION new_Data VALUES LESS THAN (MAXVALUE) TABLESPACE new
I would like to create monthly interval partition in old_data partition. Is this possible? Don't see any syntax for supporting this scenario.

No - it is not possible. There isn't any syntax for supporting that because integers do have have 'months' so how would Oracle partition an integer 'monthly'?
If those integers are supposed to represent Unix 'epoch' date values then in 11g you can create a virtual column of DATE datatype and partition on that.
But you will need to either recreate the table or, if you needed to do it online, use the DBMS_REDEFINITION package. Either approach results in a new table with the correct partitioning that includes the existing data.
Here is a similar table to yours with a VIRTUAL column that is partitioned by day:
drop table some_table_int
create table some_table_int (
    column_1 nvarchar2(50),
    start_t number(38,0),
    column_n number,
    start_date DATE GENERATED ALWAYS AS (

/That VIRTUAL column is an ordinary DATE column and your ranges will be dates rather than numbers that have no meaning for anyone.
The VIRTUAL column is only a data dictionary entry so it won't affect any actual data.

    I have an Range and list partition tables on Oracle 11g with some records and have to move the
    range and List partition tables to interval partitions. I tried for the range partition

  • Help needed while creating interval paritioning while creating MV

    I need help while creating interval partitioning for a Materialized view. The DB version is Oracle 11G. We do a complete refresh for MV and we want the monthly partition to be created automatically based on D_DATE from 01-01-2007 onwards. I tried using below.
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW MV_DEMO
    PARALLEL PARTITION BY RANGE (D_DATE)
    INTERVAL (NUMTOYMINTERVAL(1,'MONTH'))

    My bad, there was an issue with data. After your confirmation I did run in some other environment and it worked fine. There was few records with date as null which was causing the issue. Is there a way to handle it in interval partitioning? Like the null records will go in some default or max partition or something.

    You could create and use a dml error log table. Then those records would get logged to the log table and would not prevent the insert of the valid records.

    As you already noted - it doesn't make sense for a primary or partition key to be null since, at most, only one record could be inserted with NULL anyway.

    1) create the table with the same ddl (with a name change) as with which the other table was created and then simply INSERT all the data.
    2) export the table and import the table in another schema or database.

    Recently we have upgraded our database to 11gR2 which has a feautre called interval partitioning.
    Now i want to modify that existing range partitioned table to Interval Partitioning.
    can we alter the range partitioned table to interval partitioning table?
    I googled for the syntax but i didn't find it, can any one help[ me out on this?

    If you ignore the "alter session set NLS_CALENDAR=PERSIAN;" during create/alter, everything else seems to work.
    When you set the "alter session..." during inserts, the rows gets inserted into the correct partitions.
    Only thing is when you look at HIGH_VALUE, you need to convert from the default GREGORIAN to PERSIAN.

    How can I define virtual column based partitioning with RANGE partitioning without using INTERVAL partitioning.

    Basically,
    I know Interval Partitioning is a kind of Range partitioning. But explicitly for Interval Partitioned tables XML Indexes are not allowed as discussed here:

    I can do monthly partitions as :

  • Partition Pruning on Interval Range Partitioned Table not happening when SYSDATE used in Where Clause

    We have tables that are interval range partitioned on a DATE column, with a partition for each day - all very standard and straight out of Oracle doc.
    A 3rd party application queries the tables to find number of rows based on date range that is on the column used for the partition key.
    This application uses date range specified relative to current date - i.e. for last two days would be "..startdate > SYSDATE -2 " - but partition pruning does not take place and the explain plan shows that every partition is included.
    By presenting the query using the date in a variable partition pruning does table place, and query obviously performs much better.
    DB is 11.2.0.3 on RHEL6, and default parameters set - i.e. nothing changed that would influence optimizer behavior to something unusual.
    I can't work out why this would be so. It very easy to reproduce with simple test case below.
    I'd be very interested to hear any thoughts on why it is this way and whether anything can be done to permit the partition pruning to work with a query including SYSDATE as it would be difficult to get the application code changed.
    Furthermore to make a case to change the code I would need an explanation of why querying using SYSDATE is not good practice, and I don't know of any such information.
    1) Create simple partitioned table

    As Jonathan has already pointed out there are situations where the CBO knows that partition pruning will occur but is unable to identify those partitions at parse time. The CBO will then use a dynamic pruning which means determine the partitions to eliminate dynamically at run time. This is why you see the KEY information instead of a known partition number. This is to occur mainly when you compare a function to your partition key i.e. where partition_key = function. And SYSDATE is a function. For the other bizarre PSTOP number (1048575) see this blog

    u just go to tcode omc1.
    activate gr/gi slip for plant
    then create number range group code and assign it to plant ,storage location and movenent type combination.
    Then u can create the intervals thru OMJ6.

    I have a table with numeric field. I want to range partition the existing table. I used the following query

    It gives me ORA-00902: invalid datatype.
    What am I doing wrong? Is it possible to partition an existing table?

    Hi,
    You cannot partition an existing table with an ALTER TABLE command. There are couple of techinques with which you can partition an existing table, like:
    1) Rename existing table, create a new partitoned table and move data.
    2) Using DBMS_REDEFINITION package.

  • Error when creating interval for number range object

    Hi,
           I am trying to transport my BW stuff from QA to Production and I am getting the following error in the transport logs. The info objects are inactive in RSA1.
    Start of the after-import method RS_IOBJ_AFTER_IMPORT for object type(s) IOBJ (Activation Mode)
    Characteristic YRESD: Error when creating interval for number range object BIM0000396
    Can some body advise me what's wrong? Is something need to be maintained in number ranges?
    Also when I am checking the objects in RSA1, I am getting a message saying "source system WD110 does not exist", WD110 is our dev system. How can I change the source system after transport?

    Database Version: Oracle 8i
    OS Platform: Solaris
    I need to create Local-Partitioned index on a column in Range-Partitioned table having 8 million records, is there any way to perform it in fastest way.
    I think we can use Nologging, Parallel, Unrecoverable options.
    But while considering Undo and Redo also mainly time required to perform this activity....Which is the best method ?
    Please guide me to perform it in fastest way and also online !!!

    if all partitions should go to the same tablespace then you don't need to specify it for each partition.
    In addition you could use the "COMPUTE STATISTICS" clause then you don't need to analyze, if you want to do it only because of the added index.
    If you want to do it separately, then analyze only the index. Of course, if you want to analyze the table, too, your approach is fine.
    So this is how the statement could look like:

    If this operation exceeds particular time window....can i kill the process?...What worst will happen if i kill this process?Killing an ONLINE operation is a bit of a mess... You're already quite on the edge (parallel, online, possibly compute statistics) with this statement. The ONLINE operation creates an IOT table to record the changes to the underlying table during the build operation. All these things need to be cleaned up if the operation fails or the process dies/gets killed. This cleanup is supposed to be performed by the SMON process if I remember correctly. I remember that I once ran into trouble in 8i after such an operation failed, may be I got even an ORA-00600 when I tried to access the table afterwards.
    It's not unlikely that your 8.1.7.2 makes your worries with this kind of statement, so be prepared.
    How much time it may take? (Just to be on safer side)The time it takes to scan the whole table (if the information can't read from another index), the sorting operation, plus writing the segment, plus any wait time due to concurrent DML / locks, plus the time to process the table that holds the changes that were done to the table while building the index.
    You can try to run an EXPLAIN PLAN on your create index statement which will give you a cost indication if you're using the cost based optimizer.
    Please suggest me if any other way exists to perform in fastest way.Since you will need to sort 8 million rows, if you have sufficient memory you could bump up the SORT_AREA_SIZE for your session temporarily to sort as much as possible in RAM.
    -- Use e.g. 100000000 to allow a 100M SORT_AREA_SIZE

  • Windows 7 Ultimate isn't installing on my iMac. Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition

    I have a 21.5" iMac (Late 2012) running OS X Mavericks. I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate via Bootcamp but whenever i get to the setup part it goes wrong
    These are the steps I followed
    I selected all the options since I didn't have the drivers or an install disk
    it copied the Windows 7 iso image, downloaded the support software, and saved the support software to the flash drive (8GB)
    I selected a partition size - I gave windows roughly 100GB
    and I let it install
    Right now I'm at the part where it says " where do you want to install windows? I selected the bootcamp partition and formatted it. It now says
    "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information"
    WHAT DO I DO?

    I had to read the apple instructions several times before they started to make sense.  I burned my iso onto a DVD and had the required USB for support software.  Are you trying to use the single USB method?
