Creation Of Oracle Processes in Solaris

I am having Oracle 8.1.7.2 installed on Sun Solaris Server. I am accessing Oracle from my application through iPlanet Web Server---> iPlanet Application Server. The problem is that as soon as my Application goes up and users start logging in the number of Processes in OS starts increasing rapidly and speed of application falls drastically. All these processes are in sleep mode and they are under user oracle.
If anybody could advice the possible reasons please.
Moreover even after killing some sessions explicitly PMON process is not able to clear them up. Please advice ASAP.
Thanks in advance...........

  • Oracle process ORA_PSP0 & Solaris 10 Memory at 100%

Oracle was gobbling 100% of system memory until I manually killed the "ora_psp0_IND" process and then Oracle's memory usage drops down to 0.4%. There were numerous "defunct" Oracle processes that listed the "ora_psp0_IND" process as it's owner.
This has been 3 times in the last 2 weeks. Is this process required by Oracle??? Is there some tuning I can do???
    Oracle 10.2.0.1 on Solaris 10.

i thinkg ora_psp is a background process for the Oracle PL/SQL server pages:

I just wonder how come oracle that much of memory for each process. Is that something we can control through some system/database parameters or is that the way oracle 11g on solaris works? As you have already said, it is "virtual" memory. This is not real, "physical" memory. Solaris has a virtual memory sub-system layer in it, as do almost all other modern operating systems. Google "operating system virtual memory" to find out more on what virtual memory is and how it works.
In terms of your question, virtual memory means that not all of a process's memory space needs to be in physical memory for it to run and execute. The process virtual memory space is broken up into equal sized pages, and only those pages currently being referenced (used) are mapped and read into physical memory pages. Thus the virtual size of a process is irrelevant to how much physical memory is being used. Look at the RSS column (ps -ely) for the physical memory used by each process - Resident Set Size.
Furthermore, an Oracle shadow server process (oracle) uses a large segment of shared memory for the SGA. This shared memory only exists once in physical memory, and is shared amongst all the shadow server processes. But it is mapped into the address space of each process, and so appears and is counted in the virtual and physical memory of each process.
So each reported virtual size (SZ) of each oracle process is also counting the mapped shared memory pages in each process, and so counting the same pages multiple times across all the oracle processes. You need to subtract the size of the SGA shared memory from the virtual size of each oracle process to determine the private, local memory per shadow process.
If you want a further breakdown of the memory map of each process, look at the manual pages for pmap (man pmap), which will break it down by text, private data, zero initialized, shared and other types. By subtracting the shared size from the resident size you can get a true view of the private, local memory per oracle shadow server process.

  • Automate the EAR creation and deployment process

    Hi,
I am trying to automate the EAR creation and deployment process. I am following this approach - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/adf/part4-098813.html
In this approach we use pure ANT without OJDeploy. I am able to Create the EAR file but while deploying to weblogic server manually I get the attached error.
    Error is - java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet
I would like to know, Is this the best practise to automate the EAR Creation and Deployment Process? If not, Please provide me some other best approach.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards
    Balaji S

    Balaji,
I am the author of that article.
At the time I wrote the article, ojdeploy was not working properly - however, the bugs that I noted at the time have been fixed. If I were writing the article today, my strong recommendation would be to use ojdeploy.
If you insist to use the pure ANT (no ojdeploy) approach, I'd debug your issue this way:
1). Generate the EAR file using the deploy option from the application navigator in JDeveloper. Deploy that EAR file to your WLS server and test to ensure it works. A note that if you are creating an ADF app, you must deploy the JRF to WLS first.
2). Once the EAR from JDev is working, use a tool such as WinZip to expand the JDeveloper-generated EAR file and your ANT-generated EAR file. Compare the two. If you find differences, fix the ANT scripts so that they are the same.

  • Complexities of Migrating Oracle 10g from Solaris to HP-UX Itanium

Can anyone share their experiences with regards to migrating Oracle 10g from Solaris on a Sun platform to HP-UX 11i v3 (Itanium) on HP Integrity servers. We are trying to consider all the risks associated with such a move. How much time delay did you experience in resolving unexpected issues along the way? How complex is the process? If you had to do it all over again, would you?
In addtion, we will also be migrating Oracle eBusiness Suite 11i (11.5.10.2).
    We appreciate your helpful feedback.
    Thank you.

    Here is more information:
    - the database size is currently about 500GB
    - our ASP allows us to be down as much as we want however the company's own needs can only allow a downtime window of two days (over the weekend)
    - i presume further that RMAN might be an option to use to backup the database and instance to some transportable media
    - it would take about four days to get that media from the ASP to our facility so durign that time the instance at the ASP would have to be used
    - after we get the backup media and load everything into our in-house site, our last step would be to find a way to migrate all changes over the WAN. I am told that unless the platforms are the same on both ends, mirroring will be extremely difficult or impossible. If we have a platform that is different from the ASP platform, then the migration of all changes will require conversion and other mechanisms. I am told that HP-UX has so much complexities that this will be a daunting task to accomplish.
Do you have any opinions and recommnedations?

By default, oracle will look first for a spfile named "spfile<ORACLE_SID>.ora". Lacking that, it will try to find "init<ORACLE_SID>).ora.
Eventually,I would like the db to read the spfile spfileorcl.ora during the startup. How can I achieve this?
Once you have started the db (I believe a startup nomount will be sufficient) you can issue CREATE SPFILE ... Details are in the fine SQL Reference manual found at tahiti.oracle.com
BTW, "open" is the default behavior of "startup", so no need to specify it. A simple "startup" does the same thing.
    Thanks

    Hi,
If you getting a problem with DBCA go for manually process:-
I had listed steps which I follow
Step 1: Decide on Your Instance's System Identifier (SID)
Step 2: Create the Initialization Parameter File
Note:- Name the copied init.ora file init<SID>.ora because this is the default naming convention that the Oracle server looks for when it tries to start up the instance ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory (exists over the prefered path)
Edit this file's parameters so that your database and your instance will run effectively on your system.
DB_NAME Must be set to a text string of eight characters or less. During database creation, the value assigned to DB_NAME is recorded in the database's datafiles, redo log files, and control files. If, when you attempt to start the database instance, the value of DB_NAME as recorded in the initialization parameter file and the database name in the control files are not the same, the database will not start.
DB_DOMAIN A text string that specifies the network domain where the database is created.
CONTROL_FILES Is assigned the comma-separated list of control file names to use for the new database. When you execute the CREATE DATABASE statement, the control files listed as values assigned to this parameter are created. If you fail to specify a filename for the CONTROL_FILES parameter, Oracle creates a file with a default operating system dependant filename.
DB_BLOCK_SIZE Specifies the standard block size of the database. This size is used in the creation of the system tablespace and by default in any other tablespaces created. Take care when determining what this value should be because after the database is created, the value cannot be changed.
UNDO_MANAGEMENT Determines whether the database starts in automatic undo management mode. A value of AUTO enables automatic undo management; MANUAL enables manual undo management mode. In 9i, AUTO is suggested, but MANUAL is default.
UNDO_TABLESPACE When the instance starts in automatic undo management mode, it needs to have a tablespace in which to store its undo information. The default is SYS_UNDOTBS and is automatically created if you execute a CREATE DATABASE statement with the UNDO_MANAGEMENT initialization parameter set to AUTO and no UNDO TABLESPACE statement in the CREATE DATABASE statement.
Step 3: Connect to and Start the Instance
Connect to the instance as SYSDBA either using operating system authentication or the password file method of authentication and start up the instance using the STARTUP command.
    sqlplus '/ as sysdba'
If your parameter file is not in the default location or is not named init<SID>.ora, you may need to specify the PFILE clause in the STARTUP command for the instance to start.
Because you do not yet have a database attached to the instance, you need to start up the instance in NOMOUNT state:
    startup nomount;
The instance is now started and ready for the CREATE DATABASE command.
Step 4: Issue the CREATE DATABASE Statement
    create database mydb1 controlfile reuse
    Logfile
    Group 1 ('/mydb1/log1/log01a.log',
    '/mydb2/mydb1/log01b.log') size 50M,
    Group 2 ('/mydb1/log1/log02a.log',
    '/mydb2/log1/log02b.log') size 50M,
    Group 3 ('/mydb1/log1/log03a.log',
    '/mydb2/mydb1/log03b.log') size 50M
    Datafile '/mydb1/mydb1_system.dbf' 250M
    AUTOEXTEND ON MAXSIZE 500M
    Undo tablespace mydb1_undo1
    Datafile '/mydb/mydb1/mydb1_undo1.dbf' 50M
    Default temporary tablespace mydb1temp tempfile
    '/mydb/mydb1/mydb1temp1.dbf' size 75M

    Character set US7ASCII

  • Oracle 10g in Solaris Problem

Hi Guys , i was wondering how to start oracle database in correct way in Solaris
Because i had a problem with it..
i start the Oracle 10 in Solaris ,
the database is up. then after few hours, it shut down / the database is down for no reason then i have to start again
I was wondering whether there is a timeout? if there is how do i check it?
below as my step to start the database.
    1. go to Oracle_HOME/bin
    2. type lsnrctl start
    3. sqlplus /nolog
    4. connect username/password as sysdba
    5. startup
any better way to start it??
after step 5, it shows no error and the database is ready.
i can connect using sql plus and toad from other computer.
But after few hours , it shutdown for no reason again..
    anyone can help me?
is there any better way to start the database??
can i use nohup command in solaris to start oracle? how to do that?
Because of that , after my database starts , my web applicaton always hit
java.sql.SQLException ioException Broken Pipe then i have to restart my app server...
i heard broken pipe happens because the database is down without telling the app server is it??
    Thanks...

  • Memory issue, Oracle 10g in Solaris 10 zone

I know many memory questions have been asked, but I couldn't find any similar to the problem I'm seeing.
Starting from a fresh server boot, I have 12G of available memory, or nearly that anyway. Oracle 10g is installed with no databases created.
After creating a database and running a few sql scripts to create tablespaces and users, my available memory is down to 3.5G.
Rebooting the solaris zone containing Oracle does not restore any available memory. Shutting down the database does not restore any available memory.
Why does Oracle seem to absorb so much available memory and not release it? I created the database from scripts and restricted the overall sga by a good bit over the defaults and while this did reduce the memory the oracle processes use, I'm still seeing this continual absorption of memory to the point where running any imports takes forever because my memory seems to bottom out. I saw it go down (using top, and vmstat) to about 500M at one point.
Is there any utility that I can use, either solaris or sqlplus that will free up system memory?

What are your settings fpr SGA_MAX_SIZE, SGA_TARGET and PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET?
Shutting down the database does not restore any available memory.
Hmm that's really strange. We are running Oracle 9i on Solaris 10 Containers and didn't have any problems with memory leaks.

  • Oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10 - Zoned Machine getting ORA-27102 Errors

Getting Memory issues in Solaris 10. I have configured the database to have only 2GB of SGA, but still getting ORA-27102 and also when we look at top command it seems all the memory is not available. The machine is divided into two zones, machine has 32 GB memory and has 8 processors. The shared memory settings I have done is 8 GB max.
Any help in this regard would be helpful. Is anything special needs to be done in zones ?

I was more interested to know, if somebody has installed Oracle 10 on Solaris 10 with a zone or container in solaris. What parameter settings was done on unix setting was it only shared-memory defined, if anybody has come accross memory issues in the machine after installing Oracle 10 with Solaris 10, and the machine has been zoned in two or more zones.

  • Oracle 10g on solaris 10 : kernel parameter warning

I am installing oracle 10g on Solaris 10.
I have a warning on kernel parameter missing (shminfo_shmmax for example) during the system check.
I understood that with the 10 version of solaris these parameters are replaced by ressources control and I have checked them. They are correctly setted.
Need I do something before continue the install to release the warning or can I bypass this issue and continue the install as I have no warning ?
    Thanks for your answers.
    Sorry for my english.

You are right. Since Solaris 10 kernel parameters settings in /etc/system is obsolete and some parameters are deprecated.
The steps how to configure required parameters you can find in my paper (step #1.): http://ivan.kartik.sk/oracle/install_ora10gR2_solaris.html
I bypass this issue and continue the install as I have no warning You can safely bypass this issue during installation process but you should set these parameters after installation.

  • Creation of Oracle model hanging MS SQL 7- 8.1.6

Had a question answered yesterday which has got me almost there, for which thank you. Creating the Oracle model now maps almost all the objects in my SQL Server database (apart from a few roles, triggers and stored procedures), up to the point where the log window shows:
[Timestamp] Mapping Roles mapped: 7, Roles NOT Mapped: 3
    [Timestamp] Mapping Mapping User Privileges
[Timestamp] Mapping mapped user privilege :
[Timestamp] Mapping mapped user privilege :
[Timestamp] Mapping mapped user privilege :
The process then hangs (it's been 21 hours now). Any ideas?
    Scott Doughty

Your topic title, "Creation of Oracle model hanging MS SQL 7->8.1.6", caught my eye, but our situations aren't exact.
Workbench is hanging on me during the Oracle Model creation when it gets to "Mapping tables". I also waited about 24 hours without any results.
Do you have any insight to my problem?

  • Scripts for killing blocking oracle processes?

We are having a problem in that when a user disconnects improperly, the oracle processes on our Oracle Apps box don't die properly and rows remain locked. For other terminal based versions, the script to kill the process is pretty simple, but for the web-based, java interface, it's unclear how I would go about doing this. Does anyone have scripts for doing this that could run via cron? The applications are running on solaris 2.6.

  • Oracle Process Manager gone after applying patch set 10.1.3.4.0

    Hi everyone,
I downloaded the patch set 10.1.3.4.0 from [http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/101310.html] and intalled it on my machine but after the installation finished, I found problem in runing Oracle Process Manaer Console. When I try to login, it redirects to DomainPickup.jsp and after entering oc4jadmin id and password below message appears: No domains accessible to the user logged in.
When I click on Goto BPEL Admin and try to create a new domain, it does not accept "default" as domain id: it says "Domain already exists." when I give different name, it shows this error:
    Exception
    Operation failed because:
    Domain creation error.
An exception occurred while attempting to create the domain "sample" at path "c:\oracle10gR1\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\bpel\domains\sample". The exception reported is:
I was using SOA suite 10.1.3.0 and it was working properly before upgrade. Now, I can see the version of BPEL Console has changed to 10.1.3.4.0 and still I can login to Enterprise Manager and ESB conole properly but I missed BPEL Console somehow.
I ran the setup from patch set and selected the Oracle Home for my soa suite 10.1.3.0 and continue the rest of installation. I don't know where I did mistake.
I will appeciate if someone can help me to fix this problem. I could not found any note for applying this patch on download page too.
    Thanks
