Creative uses for Time Capsule?
I just received a refurbished 2GB Time Capsule I ordered to replace an aging Airport Extreme. Quite frankly, the only reason I purchased the Time Capsule was it was less expensive than a new Airport Extreme. I'm already backing up my Mac Pro client files using a ReadyNAS NV+, so I really don't need the TC as a backup device.
What else can I use the TC for? Can it be used as a streaming media server? I'm curious to find out how others are creatively using this device, other than it's intended use.
Early generation Time Capsules suffered from heat issues, but later versions do not run nearly as hot.
As a frame of reference, if I put my hand on my 4th Generation Time Capsule for 10-15 seconds or so, I notice that it runs at about the same temperature as an AirPort Extreme that I have nearby.
I second LaPastenague on the Time Capsule. It was designed to function as a backup device, so this is likely the best use of the product for most users.

I would assume the hard drive would show up like an airdisk and I think those have to be partitioned for use by multiple computers, but maybe apple has something up their sleeve.
3. Your windows computer is able to access and store files on the hard drive, so as long as you find a backup program that is compatible things will work, but they're not going to make time machine for windows.
5. I would assume you can have as many time capsules as you'd like. And the nice thing is I believe once you have a host base, the rest of them only need to be plugged in for power and will not require ethernet plug ins, unless you're going for network speed. -
Hi. I am using a time capsule for few PC s. I have made 5 different account to access time capsule. but in windows when I enter account name and password for one account, i cannot access other accounts, because windows saves username. how can i prevent this from happenning. I really need to access all my accounts and dont want it to save automaticlly.
Why have 5 accounts if you need to access all of them.. just have one account?
Sorry I cannot follow why you would even use the PC to control the Time Capsule. Apple have not kept the Windows version of the utility up to date.. so they keep making it harder and harder to run windows with apple routers. -
Can I use my time capsule for a hard drive only?
I have a brand new Time Capsule.
Instead of backing up all of the time, can I just use the Time Capsule for my music and photos?Music and Photos would be fine.. but not itunes and iphoto.. the libraries are far more complex and if you load it onto the TC you will have no backups.. the TC is a backup device which has no method of backing itself up.

I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? To create a personal cloud?

I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)

Use external drive for Time Capsule backups AND file storage?
I have an external drive formatted by my MBP. I'm using it to store my iTunes music library and iPhoto pics. Can I use the drive for Time Capsule backups as well?
Yes, but that is not recommended. Storage and backup should be kept separate to reduce the chances of a disk failure. This is especially important because you cannot even partition a Time Capsule drive. Go get a separate drive for your storage needs. Get another drive for a second backup and use a different method of backup than Time Machine

Not via Time Machine. It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT: And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port. Second TC not required.

I am looking at purchasing the current MacBook Air but am aware of its limited storage space in terms of files, photos etc.
Was wondering if I could use a time Capsule for both back-up and as an additional storage device. Ie: would I be able to store photos and files on the Time Capsule that I do not wish to store on a MacBook Air and be able to retrieve them as and when - or would these be deleted after a period of time? Is there any way of protecting certain files on the Time capsule to prevent them from being deleted?

You can but it's not recommended, because you can damage the Time Machine structure.

Only files backed up with Time Machine are deleted from your Time Capsule when there's no enough storage. If you store other files, they are not deleted. However, for what you want to do, I recommend you to buy a big external drive and make two partitions, one for Time Machine and another one to store files, or get two external drives -

Hi, I just bought this Time Capsule for my home. I've got the internet access for all my devices (Mac, iPad, PC, iPhone) and I've got the Mac backup working through Time Machine. I'm supposed to be able to use the Time Capsule as an external drive for my PC, but I can't figure it out. My PC doesn't recognize the Time Capsule as a Network Place. I called AppleCare, but they don't have all the answers for "PC issues." They tried to get me to Map a Network Drive, but my PC popped up a window asking for a Username and Password. It looks like something similar to when I VPN into my company network from home.
I'm using Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!Download and install the airport utility for windows.. it isn't strictly necessary but the bonjour service makes life easier.
The request for username and password is correct. Username is whatever you like.. but windows needs it.. so admin.. being the common router one.. password by default is public unless you changed it.
Now to get the TC to work properly..
1. The names should be SMB compliant.. by default they are wrong.. use short names, no spaces no special characters.. pure alphanumeric. That is for TC name and wireless names.
2. Wireless passwords should also be same use WPA2 private.
3. In the disk sharing page.. manual setup.. put in the windows workgroup name.. ie WORKGROUP.. this helps the discovery process.
4. In the same area, turn on the guest account to read and write.. not necessary but helps with later versions of windows particularly.
5. Access the drive by using the direct IP address. ie in Windows Explorer address bar, \\10.0.1.1 (or whatever IP the TC is at). -
Can I use the Time Capsule as a storage device for my Ipad?
I want to get an Ipad for my wife because all she does is surf the net, email, and photoshop pictures. Can I get an IPAD and a Time Capsule and use the Time Capsule as like a shared drive to push pictures from the Ipad to the Time Capsule?
I do not want to store the pictures on the IpadIt is difficult unless you tell us what format the movies are in and what player you are using?
iTunes library will not really work. The TC is not a Media Player or Media related in any way at all.
But if you store movies in one of many different formats that are available and use a player on the ipad that can read and play those files, it can work.
So we cannot help you without info.. what source are the movies from? What format are they in? What player are you using?

In the apple world with itunes you need a computer (Mac or Windows) running iTunes with a disk available to it big enough to hold your library. And some sort of router to connect the ipad and the computer in the network.

Can I use my Time Capsule for wifi parental control?
Can I use my Time Capsule for WiFi parental control. The objective first is to use a time clock to control internet access (completely on or off). Second objective is to use the Time Capsule which is also the WiFi router for more selective internet control? Anyone out there have any tips on making this work? We have Time Warner cable feeding the house internet, which is then corrected to the 2Tb Time Capsule which also provides our WiFi. Any information including other alternatives would be most appreciated. Surely we are not the only parents on the planet with this issue. Thanks very much!
how do I get the Mac addresses for each device (this won't be a problem, I demand the device, check it, and then return it).
What wireless devices are we looking at here?
Most devices have the AirPort ID or MAC Address or Hardware Address printed on the back or bottom of the device
Otherwise, you can learn the correct number by process of elimination. Turn off all wireless devices except your Mac computer....if it is connecting using wireless.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
Look for Wireless Clients and click on the numerical IP address that is displayed
Another box will open
Look for the Hardware Address. It will be displayed as xx : xx : xx : xx :xx : xx
Write that down and note that it is your Mac.
Now, connect another wireless device and repeat the sequence. Click on the "other" listing that you see to find out more info about that device. Write down the ID or Address and note what device it is. Then power it off.
Do the same for each wireless device that you want to have limited access.
Post back when you have all the info. -
I want to use the Apple Time Capsule as an external drive and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs. Can I do that? The reason I ask is that my Time Machine utility cannot find the TIme Capsule - it only shows me the Airport Extreme, even when I "Rescan". SO I am unable to use the Time Capsule.
You will need to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds, then give it another minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab located below the row of icons to assign a name to the Time Capsule, a device password, and adjust Time Zone settings.
Next, click the Wireless tab located to the right of the Time Capsule tab
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right to save the settings and allow 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.

Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues. I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages. I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean. In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic. Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out. -
I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.
On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs. Back up one Mac first, then back up the other. Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.
