Cryptsetup luks without kernel module (static kernel)
If I have all required drivers and kernel code built into the static kernel image I still need an initrd for cryptdevice=device don't I?
When I build custom kernels I disable module support with all other stuff I don't use or need and failed to boot archlinux luks root partition without modules support.
How can I do that?
Tried booting a custom kernel without module support and besides mkinitcpio finishing with errors and the kernel image not booting properly by not loading enough drivers to boot no other kernel whatsoever (reinstall or not) booted on that arch install afterwards. Found no cause and had to format the install. Now I cannot install because this is on a 32-bit efi mac mini and the steps to modify the iso to boot don't produce a working iso.

Larch "couldn't find kernel modules"/"unexpected kernel files"
Hey guys,
I'm using `larch` to build an Arch Linux live ISO. I made it through the Installation part, however I can't get through "Larchify" (whatever that means). Here's the log:

Hmm... personally I would never run any command without understanding what it does, but it's your funeral, I guess.
Apart from that, are you sure larch is still compatible with Arch? It's nearly four years since the last update in the larch git repo, and as I'm sure you know, Arch changes frequently. I'd suggest you try to contact the developer directly. -
Automatic recompiling of kernel module after kernel update.
Hello everyone,
i tried to search for it but without success...
my question is - is it possible to set it up somehow that aur package would recompile after kernel update?
The package I would like to rebuild is rt3090 which is module for my wifi card. It is very annoying to rebuild it manually. I know that my fglrx module does it automaticaly but how to set it?
Thank all of you for any advise.Thank you :-) It looks ok, I will try DKMS as soon as I get some free time. If there was any problem, I would tell you.
BTW: I use catalyst mainly because of saving energy management, which is of course better for my netbook. My card is too new to be fully supported by the opensource driver.
EDIT:
I solved the situation by upgrading my system, I tried in-kernel module rt2800pci. In the previous kernels it didn't work well with my crappy ralink rt3090 wifi card, but that's been improved :-) so I do not need rebuild the package anymore even because this module isn't compatible with newest kernel.
I also learnt how to write my own hook from archwiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio) so if the new module didn't work I would try it.
The final solution = replace module rt3090sta by rt2800pci.
Thanks! Arch has very powerful community :-)

Automatically build kernel module after kernel update
Hello. Everytime kernel is updated, my wifi drivers don't work. I need to use this to get my adapter working: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/8192cu-dkms/ .
After kernel update, I have to manually reinstall the package, so the kernel module gets rebuilt. Is there any way to make it automatic?I noticed it, but your script doesn't run at all when I type `mkinitcpio -p linux`. And wifi still works after reboot. Same for graphics driver, it has a hook at shutdown, that rebuilds its module after kernel update, it haven't run too and graphics driver works. It's like 'mkinitcpio -p linux' does nothing to the system.

How to compile a kernel module without recompiling the whole kernel?
Hi,
I'm pretty sure my question is a bit newbish, still I haven't been able to found any information/solution to my problem in 3days.
The kernel I use doesn't come with the module I need for my hardware and I would like to know if there's a way to compile it without having to make a new kernel myself (since compiling the kernel takes ages on my machine).
Even if your answer is a "Let me Google that for you", I'm so desperate that I'll be happy to see it.
Thank you all in advance for your answers!Do you have a /proc/config.gz that you could use? Otherwise I don't know. I mean, many modules should be compilable simply with the system-installed kernel headers, but not all native modules might follow that rule.
Unfortunatel most of what you find on the web talks about how to create new modules which can be compild against the installed kernel tree, not about how to compile one of the native kernel modules against it.
Actually, try what those links suggest.
Skip the configuration part, and just do:
make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video modules
(maybe `make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video clean` first )
EDIT: Meh, that uses your config and won't build that driver... there must be some way though
EDIT2: Try:
make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video modules CONFIG_FB_VT8623=m CONFIG_FB_SVGALIB=m
The problem though is, that they might have removed some of the dependencies of the module, so if it doesn't compile, you'll have to recompile the kernel.
Good thing is though, you can use their .config as base (found in /usr/src/linux-..../.config)
You can also check if your config "supports" your module by putting it into the kernel source tree, running `make menuconfig` and typing /8623 and pressing enter.
The last line in that screen should read:
Selects: <list of options>
As long as all of those options are either =y or =m, you're good. SVGALIB can be =n because it's part of drivers/video/ and you can compile it together with your module.

[S]Systemd can't start Load Kernel Modules after upgrade to Linux 4.0
After upgrading from linux 3.19.3-3 to 4.0.1-1 I've been having a bit of an issue. At that same time I upgraded readline (6.3.006-1 → 6.3.008-1), linux-firmware (20150206.17657c3-1 → 20150410.ec89525-1), nvidia (349.16-1 → 349.16-2) , wpa_suplican (2.4-1 → 1:2.3-1), and arpack (3.1.5-1 → 3.2.0-1). There may be some typos there since I'm copying by hand. Normally this wouldn't be much of a problem because I have been, priory to a few weeks ago, really good about back ups and would just roll my OS back 15 minutes. But things like that tend to fly out the window when the semester gets heavy. My last snapshot was on May 22nd, which I could still use, but would rather not. Also, it seems like a good idea to try to actual fix things for a change.
[edit] I should mention that this upgrade was run April 30th.[/edit]
When I finished booting the system after the upgrade, I got an error message during boot “systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.” When it finished booting I run “dmesg -l err” to confirm that I'm not having a bad day dream or something. I'm also still seeing the errors that I described in this thread. Don't know if the two are related. I also noticed, when I was logging in, that it said that my stystem was still using the old kernel. Indeed, according to “uname -r” I'm still using 3.19.3-3-ARCH.
The closest thing to experience I have with this is when I forget to mount /boot before upgrading linux, so I made sure /boot was mounted and rand “sudo pacman -S linux” to reinstall, but this didn't help. Just to check I ran “ls /lib/modules” and see the directorys “4.0.1-1-ARCH” and “extramodules-4.0-ARCH” as I would expect after a succesful upgrade of the kernel.
Running “systemctl –failed, shows that in addition to systemd-modules-load.service, lm_sensors.service has also failed. I somehow expect lm_sensors depends on systemd-modules-load. I tried “systemctl restart systemd-modules-load”, but was rewarded with a message telling me that it failed. The “journalctl -xe” log has the lines
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
Looking at the Wiki for Systemd under troubleshooting it actually has an example of trying to work through this exact issue. Following that I tried
journalctl _PID=1799
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
which I already mentioned. At this point that bit of the Wiki stopped being useful.
Looking up on Google Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented returned this thread from two years ago. Running “lsmod |grep sg” or $lsmod |grep nfs” returns nothing, but it also returns nothing on this laptop I'm using as well, so I don't imagine that is useful. Also, “# grep nfs /lib/modules/4.0.1-1-ARCH/modules.alias” returns a “Nosuch file or directory” error.
Searching for something on 'sg' turned up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165361, which was also not useful.
As a sort of last resort I tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel
I reboot and boot into my fallback installation, running 3.19.3-3, mount the partition with my main Arch on it, and arch-chroot into it.
I downgraded linux, and nvidia, exited chroot, and rebooted hoping to the Great Bacon that I didn't do anything too damaging. After all, my back ups are more than a week out of date.
This worked. I'm still getting those annyoing (they are only annoying right?) error messages I mentioned earlier. My system seems fine, if somewhat out of date.
Still, the question remains, “why did that happen, and how do I actually fix it?”
[edit2=solution]
There were two problems. First, my grub.cfg entry was pointing to the wrong UUID. I fixed this by regenerating it. Then I noticed the UUID in the grub menu itself (during the boot prosses) did not match what was in grub.cfg. To fix this I reinstalled grub.
Last edited by nstgc (2015-05-05 12:07:30)Well, I took snapshots, not back ups but they work well enough for this, and rsynced /boot/ to where it use to be, moved/renamed the subvolume boot, and commented out the appropriate line in fstab. I also deleted that other /boot from before. I unmount /boot, and regenerate my grub.cfg. If my machine still boots, I'll try for an upgrade.
grub.cfg now looks like

It seems as if the lines you mentioned, Scimmia, have changed. I'll take that as a good sign.
[edit] System still boots. Trying for the upgrade.
[edit2] Still can't use Linux 4.0. I'm getting the same errors as before.
[edit3] Successfully downgraded.
[edit4] I looked through /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and there isn't anything in there that isn't in my laptop's. I don't know if this will help, but here is the output of "pacman -Q"

Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko' [SOLVED]
After my most recent kernel upgrade, I can't get my GUI to run. I've tried reinstalling the nvidia driver to no avail.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm using a GeForce 8400 GS

Last edited by wsims (2010-06-22 15:06:04)if you used the packages from repos, the blacklist is done automatically in nvidia,
$ pacman -Qo /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf is owned by nvidia 195.36.31-1
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf
blacklist nouveau
but i guess you just want to mess your system by using unsupported and very bad ways and you are way smarter than the devs if you used that installer

[Solved] Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module
Hi all,
I've just made the jump to arch and have a fresh install. I'm having trouble getting the nvidia drivers to work. I am currently using the nouveau drivers without issue.
The method I am using - after much trial - is:
- uninstall nouveau and mesa lib
- install nvidia package
- remove nouveau module entry in mkinitcpio.conf
- run `mkinitcpio -p linux`
- edit .conf in xorg.conf.d with minimal required settings. Currently:
Section "Device"
Identifier "device0"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
I have installed the linux-headers package and tried reinstalling nvidia again

The only entry I found in `dmesg | grep nvidia` related to nvidia-drm, and seemed to say it was loaded successfully. I didn't save the exact entry and i've reinstalled nouveau now so that I could post this.
Any help much appriciated. I've been at this for a while. Learning a lot in the process!
Last edited by gnibbler (2014-01-04 22:31:49)Success! Several days of trying various things and I finally give in and make a post to this forum. One more attempt - which was only really so that I could add modprobe info to this post - and it works.
I had at some stage installed the driver xf86-video-nv, and this may have been causing the clash. I un-installed it, and followed the procedure above to reinstall nvidia.
I think the main hang up I'd had is that I had not been rebuilding my kernel image with mkinitcpio after installing nvidia during my previous attempts.
I hope some info in here helps some other stuck archer.
Edit: Thanks graysky. I had found the right nvidia driver using the arch wiki and followed this advice to remove the nouveau hook. Much appriciated.

Trouble building kernel module for sensor support
Hi, I'm new here but have been using Arch for a while. Recently, I decided to install Arch on an old laptop (Toshiba A70) and have managed to work out most of the kinks to where it runs nicely. Unfortunately, ACPI support is spotty and the /sys/class/thermal directory gives me only cooling_device0. I installed the lm-sensors package and ran sensors-detect, which yielded no results. Although the laptop runs smoothly otherwise, I would like to know the CPU's temp so that I would be able to set up a fan control scheme and CPU scaling (so far it's stuck at the lowest frequency, and that's kind of a big deal for me since the laptop runs on an archaic mobile P4 chip).
Sorry for the story but I felt some context was necessary. I did manage to find a kernel module that would connect those sensors to ACPI for me (http://sourceforge.net/projects/omnibook/), however I'm having trouble building it on the latest kernel. Here is the output from running make:
make -C /lib/modules/3.16.1-1-ARCH/build SUBDIRS=/root/omnibook-2.20070211 modules

[SOLVED] pacman -Syu on 10/17/2012, systemd can't load kernel modules
Ok, I did a [pacman -Syu] on my laptop, and everything went well. So I decided to upgrade my PC as well, did a reboot and then couldn't ssh into it.
Had to access the machine, and found

I'm guessing it's probably something with the new image after the pgrade, but I don't know which module to load nor do I
understand why systemd isn't loading the modules when it was working stable enough to act as a headless server before. However, I've only been a week or so with systemd and might have overlooked something in the configs. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Please. I'm desperate.
Last edited by confusion-is-my-sedative (2012-10-26 21:30:01)Yep, I got that far, and tried the same advice from a different user with a 'tee' command which did the same thing, but unfortunately the forcedeth module can't be loaded because its in a different directory than the 'uname -r' specification allows modprobe to search for. I posted my attempts here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1181940

I get this output when I run a script finding all my modules:
agpgart.ko
amd74xx.ko
ata_generic.ko
button.ko
cdrom.ko
ehci-hcd.ko
evdev.ko
fan.ko

So now what do I do? I am trying to compile a custom, slim, bloatless kernel.
Last edited by haxit (2009-03-01 01:15:01)just few pointers regarding this:
agpgart.ko -- AGP support
amd74xx.ko -- AMD IDE support
ata_generic.ko -- generic ATA driver
button.ko -- power button?
cdrom.ko -- erm...
ehci-hcd.ko -- USB
evdev.ko -- input devices through the kernel
fan.ko -- fan control/readings via ACPI???
fb_ddc.ko -- framebuffer support/info reading module?
forcedeth.ko -- you have an nVidia chipset with an ethernet port, I guess
hid.ko -- human interface device support (mouse, FI)
i2c-algo-bit.ko
i2c-core.ko
i2c-nforce2.ko -- I2C is a serial bus, and has been used for ages. Apparently your chipset needs it.
ide-core.ko
ide-pci-generic.ko -- ??? Not using libata or something?
ieee1394.ko -- got Firewire?
k8temp.ko -- Athlon64?
libata.ko -- the good stuff
nvidia.ko -- you evil sheep, you! (OK, so I use the binary driver, too...)
nvidiafb.ko -- new framebuffer.
ohci-hcd.ko -- USB again?
ohci1394.ko -- Firewire again?
pata_acpi.ko
pata_amd.ko -- drive controller stuff again
pci_hotplug.ko -- for all of the three people with big-iron servers that use it? Or is it good for suspend/resume, or something? I dunno, but I don't put it in
pcspkr.ko -- I disable this one. Only my BIOS should be beeping at me.
processor.ko
sata_nv.ko -- again, nVidia drive controller
scsi_mod.ko -- you need this for all the SATA stuff to work right, I'm pretty sure
sd_mod.ko -- ditto
serio_raw.ko -- *shrug* raw serial I/O
shpchp.ko -- some kind of hotplug thingie?
snd-hda-intel.ko -- you have HDA sound onboard.
snd-hwdep.ko
snd-page-alloc.ko
snd-pcm.ko
snd-pcsp.ko -- same as the main kernel one, I leave it out. Sometimes ALSA likes to make it the default, too, for no good reason.
snd-timer.ko
snd.ko
soundcore.ko
sr_mod.ko -- I *think* this is needed for burners these days. In general, don't skimp in the SCSI support in the config (you don't need tape or media changer support, of course)
thermal.ko
usb-storage.ko
usbcore.ko
usbhid.ko -- HID again
vgastate.ko -- usually a dependency for framebuffer stuff, but I'm not sure beyond that
agpgart.ko -- AGP support
actually this one is potentially a performance culprit when using nvidia drivers. kernel agp is really bad. If you have installed nvidia binary driver, you don't need this one even with AGP card. If you have PCI/PCIE card, this is a waste.
nvidiafb.ko -- new framebuffer.
nope this one is for nVidia Riva128 (pretty old video card)
ohci-hcd.ko -- USB again?
there are three different USB controllers: OHCI, UHCi, EHCI
you can't simply disable one of these. all depends on hardware setup: if you have OHCI and UHCI then you need both. So "again" is not again, but system requirement.
run
lspci -v | grep HCI
to see which controllers do you have
scsi_mod.ko -- you need this for all the SATA stuff to work right, I'm pretty sure
no, you don't. But you need to check your hardware dependencies. I have SATA, and the only SCSI stuff loaded is SG and SD
sometimes you will see several modules which have partially the same name. e.g. firewire or usb or snd. all of these might be required for firewire (Assuming that you are using firewire at all) or sound to work. Sometimes the overlap.
my modules take only 2.6MB:
du -sh /lib/modules/2.6.28.7-slim
2.6M /lib/modules/2.6.28.7-slim
without nvidia driver (this one alone is 7.6MB)
does this speed up kernel? Only to some extend and in fact only particular modules will slow down boot time. In my case PCMCIA is slowing down kernel.
O.k. so what about disk space?
Are you kidding? default Arch kernel modules take 69MB and current disks are what? several (tenths, hundreds) GB? So this is no argument really.
So what about RAM?
You will be much better off trimming down your DM (KDE or Gnome) than kernel assuming that you are using one of these, however even small WM can be trimmed down. These two (KDE and Gnome) are pigs, but you can easily cut some fat without loosing usability.
So why I did this? not to gain anything. Out of curiosity really
there is a lot of tools that may help:
lspci
lsusb
cpuinfo
for example that may help.

Problems with Intel 4965AGN and iwlagn kernel module
Hi everyone.
I having a couple of issues since my last kernel upgrade (2.6.27.5-1) and wanted to check if its my problem or if it is some kind of bug, before reporting it to the tracker.
I have the iwlagn (or iwl4965, as it is the same) kernel module in the MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf. Even tried removing it from there and leaving all the work to the module autodetect. No changes.
This is my dmesg | grep iwl output after boot:
iwlagn: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link AGN driver for Linux, 1.3.27ks

phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'iwl-agn-rs'
iwlagn: Failed to register hw (error -2)
iwlagn: probe of 0000:0b:00.0 failed with error -2
I do have the firmaware (iwlwifi-4965-ucode) installed and enabled "firmware" in the mkinitcipio.conf image.
I have to do the following to get it working:
modprobe -r iwlagn
modprobe iwlagn
After which the output of dmesg | grep iwl is the following (added a line to split the reload of the module):
iwlagn: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link AGN driver for Linux, 1.3.27ks
iwlagn: Copyright(c) 2003-2008 Intel Corporation

For what i can tell... the module seems to be loading to soon. Could this be the problem?
On the other hand, it happened a couple of times that I just lost the device (the module quit working in the middle of a session).
Any ideas?
ps. I already reinstalled the previous kernel without results. Remade the kernel26.img changing options (HOOKS) and modified the order of services in the DAEMONS array, to no avail.Nope. I'm still having problems.
Replaced NetworkManager with ntcfg2, but no changes so far.
Here is the kernel package I have installed:
core/kernel26 2.6.27.6-1 (x86-64)
Keep having to reload the module:
modprobe -r iwlagn
modprobe iwlagn
Output from dmesg | grep iwlagn seems to be the same:
[23:06:57 crow]$ dmesg | grep iwl

On the other hand, I found someone with the same problem in the Poland Arch Linux Forums:

But I dont understand if the second person is giving its setup (and has it working) or if it is reporting problems too.
No one else is having issues with this wireless card? -
[cisco VPN] Can't build kernel module with 2.6.9-ARCH
I need to setup a vpn tunnel to my university in order to gain acces to their resources and be able to surf when I am on the campus. With 2.6.8.1 I used the Cisco VPN client 4.0.5 k9. After my upgrade to 2.6.9 I had to rebuild the module, but now it fails to build. Anyone knows how to solve this? Or does anyone know another vpn client that is compatible with Cisco. This piece of software is essential to me. Please help. Here is the output:
