CS3 Paste in Front - Busted?

Hello,
A number of people in our offices are getting some very odd behaviour with AICS3, big site license running on dual G5s mounted with 10.4.10.
When you cut or copy a group of objects composed of vector and raster components and then paste in front the bitmaps jump around, move, change scale, jump outside their masks or even swap or duplicate totally at random. The same thing happens if you drag the target objects from one file to another.
The IT and software support folks have looked the jobs over and say that from now on we just have to live with this OR group all objects on one layer before trying to paste in front.
Is this really a bug in CS3? Are other users running into this issue and if so how are people coping? Any information would be gladly received.

Wow -you have been finding a lot more problems than we have.
We have also noticed that Appearances are problematic. Appearances often won't "let go" or let you sample another appearance or go away with anything other than a "Clear Appearance" or "Object has Basic Appearance" menu command from the fly off in the Appearance Pallet. It's like the old cursed object problem come back except harder to fix.
We also find that elements like type strings that have been painted with an Appearance that includes multiple strokes, drop shadows etc "loses" the information in the pallet so you cannot tell what the style is unless you expand a duplicate and check it manually. When type treated in this fashion is sampled and applied to another type element the target object often does not receive all of the attributes and looks and acts different.
Go figure.
We have no choice in what version of AI to use. We are mandated to use CS3 even though our major image carrier and pre-press vendors have even worse problems coping with the files. We keep v10, CS1, CS2 and CS3 on most of the workstations so that we can deal with legacy files. Legacy files cause so many problems that it is not practical to comment here.
Do you think the above issues are related to OS? Are you sticking with CS2 to avoid this kind of silliness? In your experience do things get any better if you use the latest and greatest OS? We have all of the patches for CS3 installed by the IT guys and still find things really buggy in 10.4.10 Build 8R218. There has been some discussion leading us to speculate tht CS3 Mac is just a dog version of AI and that we just have to grin and bear it until the next creative suite release.

Paste in front or similar

Hi, all;
Sometimes when I copy and paste an object in Captivate, it has the exact position as the original. Other times, it is offset by a few pixels down and to the right. I'd like to be able to control this, rather than having it be random--usually the opposite of what I wanted that time.
Some programs have a "paste in front" option, and others have a preference where you can set how far the copy is offset. However, I have been unable to locate this option in Captivate.
Can anyone help?

I'm a little confused. I see you say you can "easily" rearrange the priority on the timeline, but I am having a really hard time with this. Having to drag and drop each one is very laborious and time consuming. Do you have any wonderful shortcuts for allowing me to reorder several objects at one time?
What I'm finding is that when I try to drag multiple layers at once, the timeline flashes, but nothing happens. The "Bring to front" and similar buttons aren't active with multiple objects selected. I'm sure it's just something I'm missing.

Paste in Front?

I am trying to replace an oblject with a symbol using the 'Paste in front' function. The steps I use are
1)Placing the symbol on to the artboard
2)Copying the symbol
3)Selecting the object (a basic rectangle)
4)Paste in front.
Whenever I try to paste, rather than positioning the copy of the symbol on the selected object, a copy of the symbol is placed on top of the orginal symbol (It seems like it hasn't recognised that I have selected a different object when I use the "Paste in front" function). Any ideas what is going on? Many thanks.

One of the problems with the help files is they are often written in a confused way.
I often write that way myself were the thoughts are clear to me but quite cryptic to other readers.
I usually d a video explaining and showing what I mean when I find that to be true.
By the way when the Help files give or suggest a different meaning it is considered a bug for the Help files and there is a comments section there to so staate the difficulty.
I will probably make such a comment latter but you might do so as well. They sometimes contact the user task for advice when re-writing the Help documents.
This particular one is really quite confusing as you pointed out and they really should have qualified the instruction with alternate links say to a solution like that which James posted and or of ways of aligning and masking.
Someone mention the FH command to paste into which is a feature that Illustrator also long needs.
It is not the same thing as the OP was looking for but it would one be a good feature to have and two probably more like what the OP would have expected of such a past command.
However James points out a problem i see with the paste into command and Ii am curious to know how it was handled by FH.
Exactly how does the Paste Into command in FH determine the alignment of the object being pasted into? Centered, top left corners, top center etc.?
Does it have an option or preference that can be set. I know I have used the function because I work with images and usually need to position and cop them at the same time. I might have this wrong but I think I remember it centering the pasted into object! I do not recall an alignment option?
Does anyone know about the alignment of the Paste Into command. I believe with the new masking features some of the other applications have it is possible now to bring this to Illustrator in a way it would make sense. Now is a good tie to make the feature request again.

"Paste in Front" Gap?

Hello everybody, I'm getting gaps between boxes when I paste in front (see screen shot). I've tried adjusting the origin point from the center to the corners and it doesn't help. It seems like it's offsetting the stroke width, which shouldn't be happening. Any suggestions?

Ok, I think I left out a step. Sorry about that. The paste in front actually works as it should, the problem arrises when I go to modify the size of the top copied path by grabbing the top left corner and resizing it. That's when the bottom and right edge stop lining up with the original shape. I thought it also might be the constrain proportions, but that didn't fix it. Should't those two edges stay anchored? Any other ideas on this. I'm coming from FreeHand. This behavior has never happened when I use the same method to modify a shape. It keeps me from having to take an extra step of aligning edges. I'll try the pref. trash and see if it helps. Btw, I have CADTools 6 installed, so I don't know if that could possibly affect it at all? I'll uninstall those and see if it helps. Copy paste a front panel object to the very same xy location

Just a practical question, but I would need this kind of feature very often:
How can I copy-paste a front panel object to the very same location? Lets consider I have a TAB container, and on the first page, I have a Graph. I would like to make a same graph on the second page of the TAB, but at the very same XY location compared to the TAB container.

hm, I have just realized, there is an option to "duplicate page" for the TAB containers And it does the magic for me, creates the exact copies of all the objects

Need to Paste in Front/Behind, similar to Illustrator...on 500 layer file

Hi,
I have a photoshop file with 500 vector shape layers in it.
I need to rearrange the a bunch of the layers. Currently, it's really a bear to drag a layer 150 layers up or 150 layers down.
Is there any way to paste in front/behind, similar to illustrator....or maybe there's some kind of work around. I do use ctrl + ], ctrl + shift + ]...as well as grouping layers as much as I can.
Just thought I'd shoot this out there, in case anyone has a clever idea or knows about a tool that I'm not aware of.

Yeah, click selecting layers is a great tool.
I'm working on detailed structures for a casual video game.
In the current process most of the vector shapes are worked out in illustrator. A script converts all of the illustrator shapes into photoshop shapes, then the file is exported into photoshop.
Sometimes not all of the shapes are sent over at once from illustrator
or
some of the shapes from illustrator are combined with shapes made in photoshop
and some smart objects are made here and there and possibly dragged over from another photoshop file
and a 3D render of a structure might be composited in there
then there's post rendering effects done in photoshop to create shading, ambient occlusion, cast shadows, etc.
So, things generally have to be moved around in the file quit a bit. The file might be touched by a bunch of different people with different working processes, then the file is put in my hands at the end. I have to make heads or tails of it all and make sure it works.
So, in the end it would just be easier to be able to take any layer or set of layers and be able to put them anywhere in the file with the least amount of effort.

Dreamweaver CS3 Paste HTML Problem

Hi, I'm a fairly basic user of Dreamweaver CS3. I used to be
able to paste HTML into webpages with no problem. I have recently
upgraded to CS3 and that menu command (Paste HTML) seems to have
gone. Can anybody help?

If you want to paste the actual HTML code into a page, just
switch to
Code view, and paste.
Copy, cut, and paste in Dreamweaver are context-specific. If
you copy a
section of a page in Design view, and paste it in Design
view,
Dreamweaver automatically copies and pastes the underlying

Viewing new template in dreamweaver cs3 reverst to front page ??

When i save a new template in Dreamweaver CS3 and then try to preview in IExploer it asks me "do you wnat to open or save this file? when i select either it reverst to my old MS Front Page editor

Do you own Flash? Are you familliar with action scripts? If
not, then you
probably want to start with a plain html template and learn
how to code html
and CSS. Flash sites look nice but they are not friendly for
Search Engines
or users who don't have flash player installed on their
system.

CS3 - pasting text with registration/trademark - not converting in code.

Hey Gang,
In my previous versions of DW.
As I copy and paste content from a PSD or any other document
into DW design
view, that has a character such as a Registration symbol,
Trademark,
Copyright etc.
DW would automatically write the proper code in thec ode view
(such as
®).
That is no longer happening with CS3.
It is actually placing a small reg, or copywrite symbol into
the code itself
(which is not rendering correctly in some browser / email
client
environments.
I can't find a setting to correct this behaviour. Have I
overlooked a
preference setting?

Hi Dave,
I was having a hard time with that too, the code kept showing
up instead of the symbol. Since you're using CS3 if you go to the
text tab, the very last option on the right has a bunch of
different options, it has the tm and registration symbol. If that
doesn't work you could always go into your system tools and
character map and then copy and paste it into your page, that
actually worked for me as well, but the first way is better! :)

Can i lock DW CS3 pages so Front Page can add links w/o changing file format?

I am in a situation where i create web pages for other users.
I am using Dreamweaver CS3 to create the webpages, in some cases
modify pages created in Front Page. Other users need to put
document links on the pages, they use front page to do this. When
they open the pages in Dreamweaver to insert the link, front page
chages the file automatically and saves it back to the server. Is
there a setting i can use to Lock the format or freeze it so Front
Page does not change formating automatically?

Indesign CS3 Paste Into

In CS2 you used to be able to copy an image and use the paste into function to drop the image into an identical sized pic box and it would be in the same position.
However using the same action in CS3 the image no longer does this, I understand its something to do with global and local positioning but cant see any way to set this in prefs or within the application, also searching the forums this doesn't seem to have come up any answers to this.
Is there a way round this or are we reduced to using copy and paste in place only, or adjust the selected image and adjust its co-ordinates manually to match original.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

I had the same problem. It's a global thing - I was trying to do it by coying an old box from somewhere else which I resized, and the group objects being pasted in (which I wanted clipped by the box) were resizing down. My solution was to re-draw a new box to the exact size I want, remove the old one I was trying to paste into, and when I laid my group objects over the top of the new one then cut & pasted it worked for me.

[JS][CS3] Pasting an image

Hi All
I have no idea if this is possible, but i am trying to script a way to paste into an image frame a new picture from the clipboard (CMD+V) while retaining the scale and possition of the original. (I actually thought InDesign did this, but cannot find it).
I have written the following to get the co-ordinates I need, but need help pasting the image.
Once the image is in place, I can re-apply the co-ordinates.
myFrame = app.selection[0];
myImage = myFrame.graphics[0];
myHorScale = myImage.horizontalScale;
myVerScale = myImage.verticalScale;
myGeo=myImage.geometricBounds;
this is the bit that doesn't work....
myUpdateImage = myImage.paste()
or
myImage.paste();
or other variations. I get the message 'paste is not a function'
Any guidance would be cool as usual.

I have 750 eps files, multiple paths in each of three layers in each file. (output of sorting by obj. type, fill or anchor count)
I need copy these objects to the "targetfile" it is template document with predefined layers, styles and swatches,
"Layer 1" to "Lines",
"Layer 2" to "Filled",
"Layer 3" to "TextShapes", and save it as *.ai with usin filename of the source file

FW CS3 - Paste Inside and anti aliasing

The edges always anti alias even if you select 'Hard Edge'.
Curiously, when you move the image so any part of it is not
overlapping the edges the containing shape becomes hard edged.

CS3 - New features or bugs? Why does CS3 do this?

Just moved over to CS3 and Leopard from CS2 on Tiger and Ive noticed a few annoying things which were not a problem in CS2, they are:
When I copy and paste an artwork from one artboard to another it doesnt paste it correctly. For some strange reason it has resized one of the placed images and put it on a different part of the artwork and it has also randomly moved some of the other placed images. If I group the entire artwork first and then copy and paste it its fine but I dont want to group the entire artwork as I want all the objects and images to stay on their relevant layers. Why does this happen? Never been a problem in any previous version of Illustrator. Perhaps there is a setting or something? or a bug?
When you save a workspace Ive noticed that the swatch palette does not remember the list view settings so you have to reset this every time you open Illustrator. a bug?
Every time I make a PDF by using the save a post script first and then drag into Distiller method its always very large in file size and printing directly through PDF 8.0 doesnt even work at all. The file just causes the desktop printer to pause. In fact the only way I can get a PDF to work at a decent file size is by doing a save as PDF which isnt always practical. a bug?
any ideas?

Unfortunately this isn't really an option because I want to make use of the Paste in Front function where you can paste an artwork on the same size board in the same place each time.

This also isn't an option because I don't want to loose all my layers by grouping the entire artwork.
This is a really bad bug, especially for anyone who works in the Packaging industry. Any ideas if Adobe are aware of it and are planning on fixing it?
