CS5 Produces Flawed MPEG2 Files

Hello everyone ~
I am creating this new discussion so the subject title indicates that this is an UNanswered issue. I mistakenly indicated that this issue was answered and am unable to change that status on the original discussion found here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/789703?tstart=0
There is an obvious issue with CS5's ability to produce MPEG2 files. It seems that everyone who tests this comes to the same conclusion and that is that CS5 needs to be updated or repaired because it cannot produce an MPEG2 file without burps and flaws. Several folks in that thread above put CS5 to some serious tests and found CS5 to be faulty because earlier versions of PremPro make perfect MPEG2s.
Is there any way to have Adobe give us an official answer to this dilemma?
~ Jeff

Can you please be more specific.  Please tell us the source material, size, framerate, encoding etc.
Then what type of MPEG2 file are you trying to create?  A simple DVD compliant, 720x480 29.97 7mb file?  OR some other viariant
What type of computer, memory , hardisks?

  • Exporting MPEG2 files for Blu-ray from 720p60

    I am exporting MPEG2 files for Blu-ray from 720p60 using compressor 3.05. I export straight from Final Cut 6 to compressor. It all looks great except I end up with some frames in the video that pixelate. It is just one frame, and the average viewer may not see it, but if you go frame by frame you see it. I thought it was just a bad export, but I exported the file again and the same thing happens again on the exact same frame. The fact that it happened again on the exact same frame was very odd to me. It is this way on five different video files. It's certainly not like that in the original on my timeline, so I don't know why it is doing that.
    I guess I will try exporting a quicktime file first and then putting that file through compressor to see if that makes a difference. Any ideas from anybody?

    Exporting a quicktime file first still produced the pixelated frame. I'm not sure what else to try.

  • Photoshop cs5 is not appending file extensions

    in previous versions, photoshop appended to the file extension in the fiel save/save as dialog box.  it no longer does this and when you save a file it does not append the file extension to the file name, resulting in unknown fiel type.
    i am running windows 7 64-bit with photoshp cs5.
    it does not make any since to have the option of appending the file extension if the program is not going to do it.

    Just tried this out on my Windows 7 64 bit system, and I get the same results using Photoshop.
    When I save a file in Photoshop CS5 64 bit with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the file is saved as 047. Crayon - Abstract without a file extension, no matter what document type I select in the drop-down.
    In Word I get the expected result:
    When I save a file in Word with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the extension is automatically added (047. Crayon - Abstract.docx)

  • Error code -2048 while opening a MPEG2 file

    Probably a straigth forward question.
    I have captured some HI8 video in various MPEG formats using a Pinnacle Movie Studio Box with Windows. I can import MPEG1 file to my new IMAC G5 however while trying to open a MPEG2 file (which open with RealPlayer on Windows) I get the Quick Time "error -2048 : the file is not a movie file".
    Do I need to install QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component?

    Don't waste your time! I installed the MPEG-2 Component and now Quicktime will "play" the movie but freezes after the first frame. The audio plays; the video just sits there.
    This forum is full of people with the same issue, which Apple has not addressed.
    It freezes despite having the Pro version, and the latest system and Quicktime.
    If you find a solution, let us all know!
    The MPEG-2 Playback Component is required.
    To further edit the files (and retain the audio)
    you'll need additional software.
    MPEG Streamclip (free) can convert your MPEG-2 file
    to DV Stream that can then be edited in iMovie (and
    any other DV editing software).

  • Scanning always produces invalid PDF files

    I recently purchased an HP OfficeJet 4636, and I notice that when scanning documents to PDF, the generated PDF files are always invalid. When opening these files in Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Pro, one gets the message "The file is damaged but is being repaired." Many other PDF tools can't open the files at all.
    I have installed the newest firmware update and restarted the printer, but the problem was not solved.
    I tried many different settings (e.g., resolution, paper size, scan from ADF, scan from Glass), but the problem is always the same. For the record, I am using the "Web scan" interface: http://XX.XX.XX.XX/#hId-pgWebScan.
    If there were an opportunity to attach a file to this bug report, I would attach an actual PDF file generated by this printer. I am happy to supply the file later, and I will refer to this specific file in my analysis of the bug below.
    I am familiar with Adobe's PDF definition:
    PDF Reference, sixth edition. Adobe Portable Document Format
    Version 1.7, November 2006. Abobe Systems Incorporated.
    I examined the PDF file in detail and it is quite clear what the bug is. Object 1 of the PDF file starts at byte offset 10, and it is a stream object containing the main image data in compressed JPEG format. The Length field for the stream object (at byte offset 168) is set to 1051875. However, the actual compressed stream data is only 64914 bytes long.
    This is incorrect, because the PDF Reference (Section 3.2.7, p.61, "Stream Extent") specifies that "If the stream has a filter, Length is the number of bytes of encoded data." (emphasis in original). In other words, the stream length should be set to 64914, which is the length of the JPEG encoded data, and not 1051875 (which is presumably the length of the raw unencoded image data).
    Moreover, four of the entries in the PDF xref table (at offset 65504) are incorrect:
    the byte offset for object 2 is given as 1052085 (actual location of object 2 is 65124);
    the byte offset for object 3 is given as 1052140 (actual location of object 3 is 65179);
    the byte offset for object 4 is given as 1052206 (actual location of object 4 is 65245);
    the byte offset for object 5 is given as 1052383 (actual location of object 5 is 65422).
    Also, the PDF startxref pointer (at offset 65674) points to 1052465, whereas the actual location of the xref table is byte offset 65504.
    Note that in all six cases, the error is exactly equal to the difference between the declared stream length (1051875) and the actual stream length (64914):
    1051875 - 64914 = 986961
    1052085 - 65124 = 986961
    1052140 - 65179 = 986961
    1052206 - 65245 = 986961
    1052383 - 65422 = 986961
    1052465 - 65504 = 986961
    It looks like this is a simple programming error in the printer's PDF generation software: all the offsets are computed as if the length of the embedded image stream were 1051875, whereas it is actually 64914.
    I scanned at different page sizes, resolutions, and so on. Each time, the actual byte offsets were slightly different (depending on the length of the encoded image stream), but the above relationships still hold in each case.
    Please fix this! It is not really acceptable for an HP scanner to produce broken PDF files. Thanks, -- Peter

    Hi @Selinger
    One of the important things to point out is that the Webscan feature was designed for diagnostic purposes. The intended method of scanning is with HP software and the software build into the OS.
    For Mac users this includes Apple Preview, Image Capture, or scanning from the Print and Fax Window.
    For Windows users, non HP software includes, Windows Live Photo GAllery, Paint, and Windows Fax and Scan.
    Webscan is a great alternative, but it is very basic. Your best option it to install the HP software and us the HP Scan program.
    If there is a particular reason you are using Webscan and prefer to scan this way, the only thing I can really suggest is to try a different browser.
    Please let me know the outcome of a different Browser, what Browser you are currently using, and what happens when you scan with HP software. If you require further assistance, please also include your operating system. What operating system, and version do you have? Mac or Windows?
    I hope this helps.

  • Can Compressor make MPEG2 files that will work on a Princeton Video server?

    I am responsible for selection of equipment and software for the local Public Access studio. I am trying to be sure if Final Cut Studio will output the format we need.
    We need to output video files that are compatible with our Princeton Server Group B1400 Digital Video Server. We have found it is very difficult to be certain if a particular program will generate what we need. Below are the specs for our server.
    Basically it is a a rather specific form of MPEG2. I see on the Apple web site that Compressor will do MPEG2, but that is qualified with "Quicktime", and is mostly described as being for DVD production. It seems that those are not necessarily compatible with our server. It wants a plain MPEG2 file in the format given in the specs. The server is a Linux system and its software does not know about special formats like say Quicktime or DVD might wrap around the basic data. It seems to want just plain files of MPEG2 video (and audio of course) data.
    One of my sources of my concern is that in spite of what Apple says about Compressor doing MPEG2, the makers of the server say FCP does not create output for it.
    I need to be assured about this before we invest in software and possibly new hardware.
    These are the specs for the encoding the server needs:
    Princeton Server Group
    B1400 Digital Video Server
    Encoding Requirements
    In order to ensure optimum video playout quality on the B1400 Digital Video Broadcast Server, MPEG video and audio content must be encoded as follows.
    • Video files for play-out must be encoded in multiplexed MPEG-2 program stream (PS) or MPEG-1 system stream format. Video can be encoded at rates up to 15 Mb/s.
    • Use 4:2:0, not 4:2:2 encoding.
    • Audio must be encoded as MPEG1 Layer II, AC-3 Stereo, or Linear PCM.
    • The video and audio presentation time stamp (PTS) values in a file must be continuous and increasing. The time between the first and last time stamps in a file should reflect the actual duration of the file.
    Encoding Recommendations
    • Resolution: 720 X 480 or 704 X 480 in NTSC
    • Closed GOP (Group of Pictures) with an “I-frame” every 15 frames
    • Audio bit rate of 256 kbps
    • Sampling rate of 48 kHz
    • Program stream files should have one end code (00 00 01 b9) at the very end of the file.
    • Recommended bit rates for various types of video content are as follows:
    o 4 Mbps for good quality video with low motion
    o 6 Mbps for good quality with average motion
    o 8 Mbps for good quality with high motion and
    o 10 Mbps for high quality with high motion content.
    • MPEG2 files are constructed from multiplexed audio and video streams. The length of video and audio stream segments within the MPEG file should be identical.

    Hey Terry
    in the corporate world wee have to contend with clients who are all windows based and prevented from installing anything on their systems.
    I use Flip4Mac, Studio Pro HD, with the following mix of settings;
    Open clip in QT, I do also use compressor but for some reason I like using QT for exporting to WMV.
    File/Export
    Export:movie to windows media
    Use: One pass VBR, Presentation (high), 16:9
    Options>
    Advanced... input type: interlace Lower field first(DV), output type: progressive
    Coding method: Two pass VBR
    Give this a shot and then tweak to suit your needs, oh and you can save your settings as a preset for QuickTime.
    Within Compressor there is no export to WMV, so you have to start with another setting and create your own saving it for future use.

  • Adobe Media Encoder won't open MPEG2 files

    Hi All,
    I'm hoping you can help me, I'm having some trouble with Adobe Media Encoder CS4, it won't open any MPEG2 files I throw at it.
    They all open fine in Media Player Classic, MPC-HC and VideoLan, so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong.
    Any ideas greatfully appreciated.

    Jim Simon, one came from a creative production house and a couple  came from a website that provides various videos in various formats for  testing video players.
    Thanks for the information Colin Brougham.  Can any MPEG 2 importers/decoders be used?
    I'm  new to AME so perhaps I don't understand how it works entirely but on  the AME information page on the Adobe website it says that MPEG2 files  can be imported, and there is no mention of only being able to do so  with certain Adobe products (unless I missed it).
    However,  if I can open and play MPEG2 Files in various media players, surely  there is a way to use the decoders from those to work with AME?
    All advice greatly appreciated.

  • MPEG2 files cause Finder to repeatedly relaunch...why?

    Last night (and into this morning) I reinstalled all the components of FCP Studio 4.5 because I was having problems (Compressor wouldn't process, Motion wouldn't even start, etc.). This morning I exported an MPEG2 file from FCP 4.5 using the QT conversion option to my desktop because Compressor still wouldn't work (the dreaded "couldn't connect to background" yadda yadda yadda) and I wanted to burn it to a CD (it's all of 20 seconds long). I had to restart the computer, and when I did, the Finder kept quititng and trying to relaunch over and over (after about 2 seconds of trying).
    I did some Googling and found out that the new security update for 10.4.9 causes some issues with MPEG2 files (something about not being able to display the preview correctly).
    Firstly, I know I'm using an older version of FCP, but why can we create MPEG2 files if the operating system can't handle them? If they cause the system to crash, then where am I supposed to save them to so I can use them in DVD SP? I'd love to be able to follow the normal workflow (from FCP/Motion to Compressor to DVD SP), but I can't do that if I can't get Compressor to work the right way. I know there's some problem with QMaster, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
    Any suggestions? I am using FCP HD Studio 4.5 on a G5 Dual 2GHz PowerPC running 10.4.9 with 1.5GB RAM and plenty of disc space. I've used all these apps in the past (a few months ago) with no problems, but now there seems to be all sorts of problems.
    Thanks to everyone, as usual.

    I remember something like this happening last time I tried to use Compressor, so I exported a QT file and used that in DVD SP.

    How do i produce an excel file using java code.

  • Exe file not producing the output files

    Could anyone please help me with my exe file. I have an exe file "exeFile" which takes more than one file as input from the source "c:/files" and produces some files as output into the destination "c:/files". Both my source and destination is same. My code given below is neither showing any error nor outputting any files. My code is:
    private static void compilingFiles() throws IOException
         String FirstParam = "C:/files";
         String SecondParam = "C:/files";
         Process proc =Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd /c start /MIN C:/files/exeFile " + FirstParam, (String[])null, new File(SecondParam));
    }

    After going through The reference, I modified my code as under. My first exe file "tex" is doing the necessary as before, that is producing the output files to the destination, but the second exe file "fi2t1" is not producing the necessary output.
    My output after running this file is:
    <ERROR>
    </ERROR>
    Process exitValue1: 0
    <ERROR>
    </ERROR>
    Process exitValue2: 0
    <ERROR>
    </ERROR>
    Process exitValue1: 0
    <ERROR>
    </ERROR>
    Process exitValue2: 0
    <ERROR>
    </ERROR>
    Process exitValue1: 0
    <ERROR>
    </ERROR>
    Process exitValue2: 0
    So as per The reference, I think my code is right - "So, MediocreExecJavac works and produces an exit value of 2. Normally, an exit value of 0 indicates success; any nonzero value indicates an error.".
    So please tell me where am I wrong. My code is:
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.io.InputStreamReader;

  • How To Use mpeg2 Files ?

    I have used TiVo Decode Manager for years to transfer files from my TiVo unit to my computer. I've always transfered into the mp4 format, for use in iTunes and on my iPod. I just noticed an option to transfer into the mpeg2 format, which I understand is used for compression on DVD's. I can't seem to import the mpeg2 file into iDVD, and when burned to disc, the raw file plays audio but not video on my stand-alone DVD player. How might I use the mpeg2 file in iDVD to create a finished DVD? Thanks for any help.

    DVDSP and Toast Support adding Mpeg-2 files but unfortunately iDvd will not. Per the following KB article from apple's web site:
    You can’t add MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to an iDVD project because they don’t contain standard video tracks.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6655.html
    But you can use Toast. The Help Menu within Toast 9 states the following:
    You can add any QuickTime-supported video files, such as DV, AVI,
    MOV, HDV (1080i/720p), and MPEG-4. You can also add files that
    QuickTime doesn’t support such as iMovie HD projects, MPEG-2,
    DivX, Eye-TV recorded shows, and TiVoToGoTM transfers.
    And of course Apple's DVDSP offers native support of Mpeg-2 but it's much more expensive and takes significantly longer to learn than the other option/s offered above.
    Other viable options include Visual Hub and MpegStreamclip (free download):
    OVERVIEW OF MPEG STREAMCLIP
    MPEG Streamclip is a converter, an exporter, a player, an editor, a downloader.
    It can open many file formats: muxed files MPEG, MPG, VOB, PS, M2P, MOD, VRO, DAT, DCM, VDR, PVR; transport streams TS, M2T, MTS, MMV, REC, VID, AUD, AVR, TP, TP0, TRP, TOD; demuxed files M2V, M1V, MPV, AIFF, AIF, M1A, MP2, MPA, AC3; QuickTime-compatible files MOV, DV, AVI, MP4, DIVX, WMV, FLV; pictures TIFF, JPEG.
    MPEG Streamclip supports MPEG-1 video, MPEG layer 1/2 audio, AC3/A52 audio and PCM audio. MPEG-2 video is supported in conversions, but for playback and export you have to buy the MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99) from Apple.
    To open DivX files, you have to install one of the free DivX-compatible codecs (DivX 5 or 6, 3ivx, XviD).
    To open WMV files, you can install the free Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.flip4mac.com/ . Export to WMV is supported if you buy Flip4Mac WMV Studio.
    To open FLV files you have to install Perian, a free codec pack, from http://www.perian.org/. But note that currently, Perian does not "obsolete" or replace other codecs so you still have to install 3ivx, DivX, XviD when required.
    Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

    I have checked to make sure that the movie and file is complete. I can watch to movie in its entirety with VLC and Roxio DVDmax player.

    MPEG Streamclip (free) can fix broken "timecode" in muxed files.
