Cups printer names

Hello, i need some help :).
It happens that i'm installing arch in a small bussiness, as a small file server, backup server (rsync data from windows machines) and printer server, everything is working ok, but i've a small problem: Printer names: Using samba, hal (i presume) and cups, the printers are detected as "NAME_OF_PRINTER_XX_TH45643463_A.K.A.GARBAGE".  Now the problem is that there's some notebooks in the system without NT machines (yeah... win9x) that doesn't support long names of shares. Is there a way to force a name for the printers?? It seems that cups doesn't provide that options and my knowledge of arch in this topic is not really good. (note that everything is working as expected, except this issue... and no... http://server:631 as a local port in windows is not an option)
Thanks in advance, and sorry about my english.

I think the easiest way to share linux printers with windows, is Samba.  After you install samba, there is a setting in the config file to allow sharing of CUPS printers.  Give it a shot.

  • How do I use a cups printer on a linux machine from mountain lion

I have always used a linux cups printer on my network from my iMac. You could even browse the printer when looking for it. Worked fine.
Now in the updated Mountain Lion (10.8.2) is cannot see the remote printer anymore.
If I create the printer using cups through the web interface on my iMac, which is conected to the linux server, I can create teh printer, and print a test page on this printer on the linux server! Great.
But I cannot pick the printer from a list from any application on my Mac. It is as if it does not exist (but I can print a testpage though ...).
This a a real bad change in Mountain Lion. I consider to go back to Lion (10.7).
Isn't there any way to get this working or do I realy need to downgrade to 10.7
    Thanks for any hints!

    Hi VikingOSX and Grant Bennet-Alder.
Thanks for the replies, but unfortunately, they do not work.
The solutions you suggest are all OK for 10.7.x (and I have used them before), but these steps do nothing in 10.8.2. No difference at all.
I have also tried various other suggestions I found on the web and in this forum, such as:
    cupsctl BrowseRemoteProtocols=cups
    cupsctl BrowseProtocols='"cups dnssd"'
They all seems to work (and I needed them before in 10.7.x), but they don't seem to help any more in 10.8.2
To illustrate the problem, I have tested the following 4 cases (in this particular order) on iMac 10.8.2 through CUPS web browser leding to teh following (copied text from CUPS web interface):
    Step 1:
    Description:          EPSONserver
    Location:          server
    Driver:                    Local Raw Printer (grayscale)
    Connection:          http://192.168.1.94:631/printers/R285
    Defaults:          job-sheets=none, none media=unknown
    Jobs
▼ ID ▼          Name          User          Size          Pages          State          Control
    EPSONserver-23           Unknown           Withheld           1k           1            processing since Sat Oct 6 14:59:57 2012 "Printing page 1, 85%"
    Result step 1:
Test page: via CUPS web browser, OK. works just fine, full color and everything looks just fine
Printer in printer list: No, installed printer not available in OSX.
Can print from application: No, printer not in printer list. Cannot select printer.
    Step 2:
    Description:          EPSONserver
    Location:          server
Driver:                    EPSON SP R285 Series (color, 2-sided printing)
    Connection:          http://192.168.1.94:631/printers/R285
    Defaults:          job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=one-sided
    Jobs
▼ ID ▼          Name          User          Size          Pages          State          Control
EPSONserver-24           Unknown           Withheld           1k           Unknown            stopped "Filter failed"
    Result step 2:
Test page: via CUPS web browser: NO. "Filter failed"
    Printer in printer list: YES
Can print from application: NO, "Filter failed".
    Step 3:
    Description:          EPSONserver
    Location:          server
Driver:          Generic PostScript Printer (color, 2-sided printing)
    Connection:          http://192.168.1.94:631/printers/R285
    Defaults:          job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=one-sided Jobs
    Result step 3:
Test page: via CUPS web browser: low resolution/bad quality, black and white test page
Printer in printer list: YES, it remained in printer list when changed from step 2 to step 3.
Can print from application: Yes, but bad quality, not useful at all.
Step 4 = change settings back to step 1 :
    Description:          EPSONserver
    Location:          server
    Driver:                    Local Raw Printer (grayscale)
    Connection:          http://192.168.1.94:631/printers/R285
    Defaults:          job-sheets=none, none media=unknown
    Result step 4:
Test page: via CUPS web browser: OK. works just fine, full color and everything looks just fine
Printer in printer list: it disappeared from the printer list at the moment the changes back from step 3 to step 1 were activated.
Can print from application: No, printer not in printer list. Cannot select printer.
    Overall conclusion:
The printer appears in the printer list only when it is a postscript printer or using manufacturer drivers (i.e epson drivers). It does NOT appear when using a RAW printer (but works fine printing test pages through the CUPS web interface).
10.8.2. seems to have a serious bug.
Any help? Or is downgrading to 10.7 my only solution?
    THX for reading!

Got it. In the large pages of hplip documentation I didn't notice that I just need to
    1. plug the printer in
    2. type
    # hp-conf
    And now it works

  • Canon iP2600 Leopard 10.5.6 Cups Printer Driver fix

I'm running Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.6 and bought a Canon PIXMA iP2600 printer and installed the Printer Driver for OSX (CUPS) Version 10.2.0.0 Released on 09-06-2008, file ip2600sosxcp10200ea8-2.dmg from http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0029255.asp?model=
Supposedly all I had to do was open System Preferences>Print & Fax and select Canon iP2600 series; however the dialog requires three properties to be set (1)Name, (2)Location and (3)Print Using. The last property Print Using was not auto completed and required me to select a driver. The Canon driver was not showing in the subsequent list. So here's the fix.
I used an application called Find Any File to search for anything with PPD in its name. This search found a PPD folder inside a Canon iP2600 series 1020.pkg located in /Library/Receipts.
    /Library/Receipts/Canon iP2600 series 1020.pkg/Contents/PPD/
The CanonIJPPD.tgz is what is needed from this folder:
    /Library/Receipts/Canon iP2600 series 1020.pkg/Contents/PPD/CanonIJPPD.tgz
To reveal the contents of a package .pkg right-click it and select show package contents.
Now create the following folders in /Library/Printers/ if they don't already exist:
I had to create PPDs folder in /Library/Printers/
Next create Contents folder in /Library/Printers/PPDs/
Next create Resources folder in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/
Finally create en.lproj folder in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/
    Now move a COPY of CanonIJPPD.tgz in /Library/Receipts/Canon iP2600 series 1020.pkg/Contents/PPD/CanonIJPPD.tgz to /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/
Unarchive CanonIJPPD.tgz in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/ should create a file called CanonIJiP2600series.ppd.
    /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/CanonIJiP2600series.ppd
Now open System Preferences>Print & Fax and select Canon iP2600 series and the third property Print Using should be auto completed with Canon iP2600 series. Add the printer, execute print head alignment if necessary and you're all done.
Check http://127.0.0.1:631/printers and you'll see your Canon printer listed as a CUPS printer.

Bumpski. Please any suggestion! Thank in advance.

  • LookupPrintservices() gives default printer name alone...

    Hello,
There are four printers in the network..operating system is LINUX ..when i run the program its showing only the default printer.
If i restart the cups service ,then its showing all the options. Why is it
    so....
So each time when i open the application ,i have to restart the cups..Is this is right way?
Is there is any other optimistic way to show the printer options.
    Following code
    public static void main(String arg[])
         PrintService[] services = PrinterJob.lookupPrintServices();
         for(int i = 0 ;i < services.length;i++) {
         System.out.println(i+":"+services.getName());
    PrinterJob printerJob = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob();
         if (printerJob.printDialog())
         System.out.println("Printer is There... ");
    PrintService service = printerJob.getPrintService();
         System.out.println("printer Name = " +printerJob.getPrintService().getName());
Please help me to solve this....Urgent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK now it really doesn't make sense. Your code is exporting which has nothing to do with printing from the viewer...
So, create your own Print Button and handle the file name yourself then you can call it anything you want and it gets printed from the export file name. If that third party PDF printer driver has an API available then you could populate the name there.
    Use your line of code: FileDest.DiskFileName = TextBox2.Text.ToString + " - Postage Report.pdf"
to set the file name for that PDF Printer.
Sorry it's really not clear what you are trying to do...

  • Print a report from Application Express direct to a CUPS Printer

Hi all, I'm new to this technology, is it possible to print a report from Application Express directly to a CUPS Printer? Can someone tell me in laymans terms how to do it? I find the terminology and documentation less than helpful.

    Jeremy,
BI Publisher handles submitting reports directly to a CUPS printer. However, the APEX integration doesn't currently integrate with that portion of BI Publisher.
    Here's an options:
Use the Java API of BI Publisher to build a custom Java program that would do this for you. Delivering to CUPS is part of the Java API.

  • Remove Printer Name from Crystal Report

How can i remove the printer name from the Crystal Report so that the PrinterName property of the CRAXDRT.Report object in the RDC SDK is blank WITHOUT having the "No Printer" Option checkbox checked?
Here's the scenerio.  When I first create a Report and don't go into Page Setup, PrinterName property is blank.  If I go into Page Setup and explicitly select a printer, PrinterName property equals the name of the printer selected.  If I check the "No Printer" checkbox in Page Setup, PrinterName property is blank.  But if i go back in and uncheck the "No Printer" checkbox in Page Setup, the PrinterName property equals the name of my Windows Default Printer.

I'm still not sure what is unclear about my first question.  And I'm not sure how any of the info you are requesting is going to make any difference in answering my question.  And I'm not sure how your analogy fits here but ..
    Version of CR = 11.0.0.895
CR Service Packs applied = None
Web or Win app? = Win App
OS? = Windows XP Service Pack 3
Development language?  = Both Visual Basic 6 and C#.Net 2008
Method of CR files deployment = email the .RPT file to a client
Where were the runtime files downloaded from? = Runtimes are installed from Merge Modules donwload from SAP site
What is the version of the craxdrt.dll on the deployed box? = 11.0.0.893
So here are the exact steps so you can understand what is going on:
I have the Crystal Reports Application open side-by-side with my Visual Basic development environment in debug mode so i can step through the code using the RDC SDK.
    1. I open the Crystal Reports Application and create a brand new report - "Test.RPT" and DO NOT go into Page Setup at all and save the report.
    2. In my Visual Basic development environment, i run the code that will generate the report, Here's the exact code
        Dim m_crApp As CRAXDRT.Application
        Dim m_crReport As CRAXDRT.Report
        Set m_crApp = New CRAXDRT.Application
        Set m_crReport = New CRAXDRT.Report
        Set m_crReport = m_crApp.OpenReport("Test.RPT")
    3. When i look at the PrinterName property in the CRAXDRT.Report object, it is blank.
ie. crReport.PrinterName is equal to ""
    4. I reopen the Crystal Reports Application with report "Test.RPT" and go into Page Setup and check the "No Printer" option.
    5. I go back into my Visual Basic development environment and rerun the code that will generate the report.
    6. When i look at the PrinterName property in the CRAXDRT.Report object, it is still blank.
ie.  crReport.PrinterName is equal to ""
    7. I reopen the Crystal Reports Application with report "Test.RPT" and go into Page Setup and uncheck the "No Printer" option. I have NOT specified any printer, nor have i clicked the "Printer..." button to setup a printer....i have just unchecked the "No Printer" option
    8. I go back into my Visual Basic development environment and rerun the code that will generate the report.
    9. When i look at the PrinterName property in the CRAXDRT.Report object, it is now set to my WINDOWS DEFAULT PRINTER, yet i had not specified any printer.
ie.  crReport.PrinterName is equal to "
    MyNetwork\MyPrinter"
    PROBLEMS:
    1. The client needs the report to go to the default windows printer of their machine
    2. If the "No Printer" Option is checked, the Report does not print at all
    3. If the report is set to MY default windows printer and i give it to the client, at times it takes upwards of to a minute for the Print Dialog to disply.  As i've read on other forum posts, it appears Crystal is looking for MY printer on the clients machine and takes a minute before i realizes it can't find it and then sets it to the CLIENTS default windows printer.
    4. The client believes it is unreasonable to wait a minute for the print dialog to appear ...and i agree.
    5. I cannot change the code to use the Select Printer in the RDC SDK - it's a long explanation why but just suffice it to say that i cannot do this.
All i want to do is either:
    1. Remove the Printer Name in the actual report from the Crystal Reports designer - basically undoing what Crystal did when i went into Page Setup.
    2. Via the RDC SDK, be able to detect the "No Printer" option is selected. Checkign CRAXDRT.PrinterName equal to "" is not an option.

I am working on testing a web application with BOE XI V 3.1.  I have the database and RAS machines setup.  I have been working on changing my app to printing through the RAS.  I have print preview and export working, but am running into issues printing to a printer.
On the RAS which is on a virtual machine, I have a printer setup as a local printer to a tcpip port so the VM can access a printer on our network.  But when I call the clientDoc.getPrintOutputController().printReport(printOptions); I get the error message ReportSDKPrinterException: Printer name could not be set.

I would really appreciate any help in figuring out how to print to the RAS.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jason,
Could you please let us know the complete Business Objects version with Service Pack and Fix Pack?
Actually the issue you are facing was identified as a bug and was fixed in Business Objects Enterprise XI 3.1 FixPack 2.2.
Please go through the SAP Note: 1417374 - Error "Printer name could not be set" when printing using the RAS SDK.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows Server printer names not showing in Windows 8

I have an annoying problem that's causing confusion for users. We have printers set up on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine all published in AD via print manager and then deployed through group policy. For all my XP, Win7 machines the printers show the user
friendly Share Name in devices and printers. This is important because we have a lot of the same make/model printers. In Windows 8 the Printer hardware name (i.e. HP LaserJet 600 M601 PCL6) shows up mulitple times, but not the friendly share name (Carbon,
Onyx, Graphite, etc.) that each printer has as a sticker on the front. So a user has no idea which printer is in their physical area.
The printer properties shows the share name correctly, but the devices window is just filled with identical printers. Again, this wasn't an issue pre-Win8, they display correctly there. Anyone have an idea?
    Curt Kessler - FLC

Exactly, the answer provided does not address the issue.  The share name is displayed correctly by Active Directory and the printers are listed in Active Directory appropriately to include all attributes.  The problem is that when we add the
printer to a Windows 8 OS it displays the printer driver as the printer name.  This causes confusion to our end users when they map multiple printers that share the same driver.  I will note that this doesn't seem to be a problem with all printer
models.  For example Xerox shared printers display correctly while it seems that HP printers do not.

  • Can't see printer name in the print dialog box as the printer name is too long

This is actually causing siginificant pain as I am using a tablet and moving around a number of floors/buildings needing to be able to print from where I am.
When printing from Acrobat reader, the print dialog box that comes up does not have a horizontal scroll bar and does not fit in the names of the printers in my organisation. We are unable to change the printer name, so it basically means that when using Acrobat, we can't select a printer.
All other windows applications show more characters and also have a horizontal scroll bar in the print dialog box so you can scroll across to see the rest of a long printer name. Why is acrobat not using the standard windows print dialog?
Has anyone come across this? Help!

This is the Acrobat forum, not the Reader forum. In the future you should check there. I am not sure why you can not change the printer name, unless you do not have administrator rights. The name of the printer has nothing to do with where the print copy is sent. It is just for the purpose you mentioned of identifying the printer to print to. If you are not the administrator, ask your IT folks to change the name for you and explain why.

  • How to find out the printer name for the Idoc

    Hi guys
I want to find out the printer name for the Idoc,,some default printer is attached for one idoc, then how can we see the printer name for this idoc.
    Regards
    Madhoo

    Hi,
For ALE/IDOC the  medium will be either ALE or EDI but not printer. So it might be wrongly attached. As such there won't be any printer attached to idoc.

  • What are the icons next to the printer name in the print sheet?

Ever since I upgraded to OS X Lion, I have noticed something different in the print dialogue.  First the technical info: I am using a 2009 Mac Mini (4 GB RAM, OS 10.7.3) and I have a couple of printers that I use - one is a Brother laser printer (shared from an iMac, running 10.6.8) and a Canon Pixma Pro 9000, connected via USB to a Time Capsule.
When I hit Command-P to bring up the print sheet, I now get icons on the left hand side of some of the printer names in the printer list.  One looks like a road sign - diamond shaped with a walking person in it, and the other is a circle with a wavy line (tilde?) in it.  The other printer names have no icons next to them.  I gather that the circle-and-tilde means "printer not available" (or something similar) - even though the printer is there!!! And then I wonder why the other printer names have no icons, and I have no clue what the "walking person" sign means.
I'm adding a couple of images so you all can see what I'm talking about:
What do these icons mean?  I can find NO reference to them - even in Apple's knowledge base article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670 - this just looks like the screen shots from the 10.6 Snow Leopard page.  I looked in the OS X Lion Missing Manual, but it has the same screen shots with no explanation of the icons.
This is pretty minor, but it's been bugging me for a while.   Any explanation or reference to these icons would be appreciated!

Wow, impressive, thank you!  Is there a listing or other resource available that can tell me what all these symbols mean?  Or are they the only ones?
This Mac 101: Printing article mentions some of the icons you will see in 10.6. And there is also the Mac 101: Printing article for Lion that shows some symbols. Neither show the icon you are seeing for the Brother but this is icon has been around for a while and used for warnings/information alerts.

  • Printer name with non-ASCII character

Is it possible to name a printer using ISO-8859-1 (or WINLATIN1) characters?
Our business system has logical printer names defined, sometimes using Norwegian (and Danish) letters (AE-lig, O-slash and A-ring), which we would like to map to the correct Windows UNC paths.
Mapping to a UNC path containing one of these characters works fine. But if the printer name itself contains a non-ASCI ISO character it fails.
    Example using BÆR (B AE-lig R):
    !p BÆR * \\print\bærum * 50 *

For others who might have the same problem. You can solve it by quoting the device name and/or printer name.
    !p """BÆR""" * """\\print\bærum""/q" * 50 *
This, however, causes the printer name to be '"BÆR"' with the double quotes included in the name. Thus, the job card must contain the unfortunate tripple quotes as well: -z"""BÆR""".
