Curious colour label behaviour

Not sure if I'd go so far as to describe this as a 'bug' but it had me beat for a while. I was trying to devise an appropriate workflow and was looking to use colour labels to help classify picture status (unclassified, retouch needed, delete, print etc) as noted by Peter Krough in his DAM book.
I picked titles for the first four colours but left the last, purple, without a status and edited the colour set and left purple blank.
Having done this if you now select a 'folder' to display, select a picture, press 8 to select green then press 8 again to de-select green what seems to happen is that the currently selected picture gets set to purple and filtering on purple selects all the pictures in the folder. Changing the selected picture gives the new selected picture a purple border.
Editing the colour set to put text such as 'unattributed colour' as the label makes things behave as you'd expect.
So the moral of the story, don't edit a colour set to have a blank description.
Curious !!

Colors are just a convenient way to search on the "label" field. If the label field is blank, and you search on purple which is also blank...

  • Colour Labels being reset when changing from one to another. Possibly a bug?

For some time I have suspected that I was "loosing " images that I had filtered based on their colour label. I have narrowed it down to changing the colour label of an image in just one particular way.
I think that the errors occured in  in Lightroom 3 but they it always occurs in version 4
    Using Develop mode
I label several images to one colour eg  blue
In the filmstrip using the colour label filter select for example blue and purple which will still show all the images labelled as above
Using the colour buttons on the toolbar under the image, change the colour label of  an image to purple, Since the filter is set to blue and purple the image should still be present in the filmstrip but it is missing
Searching for the image via other means eg filename I find that the colour label has been reset to none instead of changing to purple
This only happens if the colour change is done using the toolbar buttons, using any of the text menus that access the colour labels the problem doesn't occur.
The error is not limited to blue and purple labels
Am I missing something? Can anyone replicate this ?
    regards
    Wes

I can replicate this when using toolbars.
This doesn't seem to happen when I use the keyboard.
I can remember more older bug reports related to using the toolbar in conjuction filters. Somehow the codepath and behaviour is different the when using keyboard shortcuts. Go figure...

  • Why can I not assign colour labels to some files

When I try to assign a colour label to some files or folders, even icons, sometime it works, sometimes it doesn't.  I've tried from the contextual menu, from Get Info, from File > Label.  Sometimes, one method may work but it's puzzling when none works.  Why is this anyway. I never had this problem before ML.
    Colour me frustrated...

I've been so used to working seamlessly from external drives (I had a MBPro 2.2, 120GB drive, tip-toeing around in Lion), that it never occured to me that it would be different in ML on my new Mac Mini.  So, yes, after further investigation, the problem seems to only occur on the ONE external drive which I used all the time for all my video files, photos, music and any other large folders. (I plan to migrate most of it to my main drive now that i have 1GB to play with, so it's a temporary hiccup at least.)  This probably also explains why I have to "authorize" any move or transformation on that drive, but WHY?  It doesn't happen on other drives and I even tried changing permissions to Read and Write for Everyone, to no avail.  Perhaps it's still tied in to the MacBook somehow, but then so would be the other drives.  ???
Anyway, thank you for your time and for making me delve into this further.  At least now I know it doesn't affect the main system.

  • Bridge CS4 Colour labels - compatible with OS X Tiger labels?

    Hi all,
I use Photo Mechanic to cull images but want to start using Bridge CS4 too.
When I colour code files/directories in OS X, these labels don't appear in Bridge, but they do in Photo Mechanic.
Is there a way to get Bridge to recognise OS X Tiger's colour labels and vice versa?
    Regards,
    John

    Hmmm.
    I guess they're not compatible.
I'm currently doing a huge cull of stuff from the last few years, and I'm colouring the directories as I go. These colours show up in both PhotoMechanic and Finder, but Bridge is unaware of the folder colours. It's annoying having to keep switching to the Finder to see which directory needs processing next, as they all appear one colour in Bridge.
Adobe - can you please implement this feature? It's SO useful.

  • Colour labels for colour blind

    Hi,
This is going to seem like a very strange request.
I am colour blind and have a great deal of difficulty picking between the BLUE and PURPLE colour labels. Could you please consider changing the colours? Maybe make the BLUE a daker shade or the PURPLE a light grey.
    Andrew.

Until Adobe possibly makes Labels slecive colors I suggest that while you are in Library you have Metadata open where you can see the Label indicated as a word and Add Color Labels to your Toolbar (Press'T') in both Lib and Dev Mods via the righthand triangle dropdown in the toolbar, where a highlighted image indicates the color label in the bar.
Also FIltering by color from the filter bar top of film strip will let you check which 'color' you have applied.
I know this is no substitute for viusally identifying them directly, but I hope these ideas will help meanwhile.

  • Coloured Labels problem, snow leopard

    Hi,
Our studio uses coloured labels in our work flow however we have small conflict in which our new 27" imac is unable to change the label colour of specific folders that we use in our studios workflow so that the colour updates on our other macs connected to our company's server. The 24" mac and 15" macbook work fine together, however still cant get the 27" imac to work.
The 27" imac is running on snow leopard. The 24" imac & a 15" Macbook pro (2007) both running on original leopard.
The three macs are connected to our company's main server which runs on Windows 2003 server.
I recently migrated my user account from the 24" imac to the new 27" imac. My old user account on the 24" imac has been disabled and a new on is now been used
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks Scott

    Hi MFJ,
Try to scrub the current install, and install a new driver package via Apple Software Update:
    1) Click on Go menu (Click the desktop, then look at the menu in the bar at the top of the page)
    2) Select Applications
    3) Select the Hewlett Packard Folder (if it is not there, then you can skip this entire step)
    4) Select HP Uninstaller
    5) Click on Continue
    6) Select the printer.  press and hold Control + Options + Command (Apple) keys on the keyboard simultaneously.
    7) Click on Uninstall
    8) You will get a popup window - "Are you sure you want to uninstall all HP Software packages"
    9) Click on OK to continue
After doing this, readd the printer via the "+" symbol.

  • Make layer colour labels more powerful

Two apparently simple changes would make the layer colour/color feature very useful.
I'm talking here about the colour label which can be assigned to a layer by rightclicking on a layer's show/hide eye.
    1. allow several layers to be assigned a colour in one action.
For no apparent reason, the colours are greyed out if you rightclick with several layers/groups selected. When I'm colouring layers, it is to identify layers which have something in common. Selected several and then colouring them is far quicker and more natural than select one, colour it, select another, colour it... ad nauseum (and this is not something I need to do in a simple PSD, so I really do mean ad nauseum.)
    2. add a command to select all layers of a particular colour.
The similar layers I labeled with a colour in point 1 often need the same changes made to them. If I could select all the red-labeled text layers and increase their size by a point, then select all the yellow-labeled shape layers and nudge them down a couple of pixels, then select all the green-labeled shape layers and apply a different layer style it would save me literally hours some weeks.

I was unaware of this feature until today (very cool). Glad I learned something today.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous and unacceptable.
I like this request and it seems simple enough to implement.

  • Colour labels missing in LR4

I've just installed LR4 and imported my catalog from LR3. All have imported OK apart from the fact that I had my pictures colour labeled and these don't show in LR4. The labels show in Bridge so they are still there but don't show in Lightroom.
Any thoughts as to how I can get them back please?

To expand on Dorin's answer, if you have renamed your labels in Lightroom 3 (something non-default), then you will have to rename the labels in LR4 as well.
Your pictures actually store the label string, not the colour. Lightroom merely matches the strings and maps those back for display purposes.

  • How to enable file-colour-labeling on ext3-device

    Hi,
our company just got a Thecus N5200 raid system and copied everything onto the raid with 'ditto'.
Unfortunatly now the labeling in the finder is not working correctly any more.
Some folders kept their colours, others didn't and you can't change te colours.
It seems to me, that as the labeling infos are stored in the HFS+ metadata and some files and folders kept their colours, there should be a way to get this working for all files, but I can't figure out how.
    Anybody got an idea?
    Thanks
    Dennis

Do the mislabeled files belong to a certain user? Sounds like maybe some data was transfered via a non-apple protocol like smb. If this is the case try again using afp.

  • Curious time machine behaviour

I bought a new MacBook pro and used the startup assist feature to move the files and programs from my old iMac to the new machine.   I used my Time Machine backup hard drive to do this connecting it to the new mac by a firewire 800 cable.   The transfers seems to have gone well BUT...
When I plugged the Time Machine hard drive back into the old machine, it stopped working.
       Here's what happened:
First I get a message from Time Machine telling me that it can't back up my system because there's not enough room on the Time Machine hard drive.   This I thought was very curious because Time Machine does one large backup initially and then only backs up the changes after that.  So it normally wouldn't back up the entire system unless you told it too.   I didn't.   Secondly when I went into Time Machine I noticed that all the incremental back ups going back through time were gone.
So because I used it to tranfer files to the new computer I lose compatibily with the old one?

When you transferred the data to the new machine and then created a new snapshot in Time Machine, the backup history was inherited and no longer linked to the old machine. You then tried to back up the old machine, which meant that TM had to copy every file on it. There wasn't enough room on the backup volume for that.
If you intend to back up both computers to the same drive, you need a much bigger drive.

  • CS5: Print thumbnails, 7x7 per page limitation + master labels

I'm testing InDesign CS5 and I have two questions regarding the "Thumbnails" option of the Print window.
    1. Is there a way to define a greater number of thumbs per page?
I'm working on a 500+ pages book and I'd like to be able to print more than 7x7 thumbs per page in order to discuss the book content with my client. I could print a PDF and then place the pages of thumbs into a new InDesign document but…
    2. A colour label can be define for each Master, finally!, allowing for an easier overview of documents. In this logic, when I print Thumbnails, is there a way to see the label colour on each thumb. Ideally, at the end of the last page of thumbs, I'd like a listing (like a caption) summarizing each colour label next to the Master page name and code with a count of pages.
Thanks in advance for your guidance. If these options aren't available at all, I'll fill in a Feature Request.

Set up the document on a page size large enough to hold 4 place cards, but only put one set of fields, in the upper left position. When you do the merge, select multiple records per page and ID will duplicate averything as many times as it will fit according to the spacing limits you set.
This is covered quite well in Help.

  • Color label of folders in applescript

Hi, I have a script to create job folders, the folders within are split into 2 sections and I want to colour label the folders in the script.
One set is for artwork and contains the start 'AW' and one set is for creative and contains the start 'CR'. I'd like all the artwork folders to be green and all the creative to be yellow, can someone help me and amend the script below to achieve this?
    Thanks in advance.

to MakeFolderStructure out of SomeItem at SomeFolder
make the folder structure defined in SomeItem at SomeFolder
    SomeList defines the structure:
nested list items create folders in the previous text item - {"A", {"B", {"C"}}} = /A/B/C
empty text items will create untitled folders
parameters - SomeItem [mixed]: the folder structure
    SomeFolder [alias]: the destination folder

set ParentFolder to the result as alias
              end if
    end MakeFolderStructure

you added the code incorrectly in the other thread.  Your handler should look like this:
to MakeFolderStructure out of SomeItem at SomeFolder
              set ParentFolder to SomeFolder
if class of SomeItem is list then
                        repeat with AnItem in SomeItem
if class of AnItem is list then -- add subfolder(s)
MakeFolderStructure out of AnItem at SomeFolder
else -- add a new child folder at the current parent
                                            tell application "Finder"

set NewFolder to the result as alias
if name of NewFolder begins with "CR" then
set label index of NewFolder to 3
else if name of NewFolder begins with "AW" then
set label index of NewFolder to 6
                                                      end if
                                            end tell
                                  end if
                        end repeat
else -- add a new (potential) parent folder
                        tell application "Finder" to make new folder at SomeFolder with properties {name:AnItem}
set ParentFolder to the result as alias
              end if
    end MakeFolderStructure
Note that I changed SomeFolder to NewFolder in the Finder block. SomeFolder is not used after that line, but it is used earlier, and using a new variable is less confusing.

  • Labels like in 10.8 can it be done?

I am still irritated by the way the labels work in 10.9 after being in Maverick since weeks. They are in my mind not supportive to visual recognition.  is there a way to get the label to display like in 10.8 and before?  Coulour the whole text?

Coloured labels have been removed in Maverics and now there are tags (like coloured dots) to tag files.

  • User Interface Annoyance - Label

I have colour-labelled my desktop disk icon many times since I have been using my iBook, most commonly when I'm using a picture as my desktop background.
I noticed a few days ago, however, that the labelling menu has been 'greyed out', and it is not possible to change / remove the colour. Look here for a screen-cap:
    http://www.lewismiller.info/flat/label_greyed.jpg
The label menu is unavailable in every location, and it's not even possible to remove it using FileBuddy. The problem persists after restart, and is not confined to my (admin) user.
This is driving me barmy. I should clarify - this problem began overnight, without me making any major changes to the system / permissions. Have I found a bug in 10.4.4? Can I set icon attributes via command-line somewhere?
The machine is not normally reset, but goes from awake to sleep every day. I suppose a typical session is 7 - 10 days. Is using the machine for this long doing any harm? I know that UNIX is a very robust OS, but I have to reset the machine once a week or so because of some memory leakage from various apps.
I'm digressing. Someone PLEASE help me kill the darn colour-label! Or color-label as US people would say.

    http://www.lewismiller.info/flat/labelgreyed2.jpg
Hi Al - I tried what you suggested. Do youn mean to click on the icon in the dialogue above (so you get the blue drop-shadow) then to just press the del key on the keyboard? I don't really understand how this would solve the problem, but it doesn't seem to work....
As you can see, the colour label chooser is still completely greyed out.
Any other ideas? I'd really appreciate your mac-user tips!

  • Syncing Labels from Lightroom to Bridge and vice versa.

The labels in Lightroom over-ride those in Bridge and vice versa.  I have matched the descriptions of the coloured Labels between Lightroom 2.0 and Bridge, yet when I assign eg. a Green Label in Lighroom and then open Bridge, the Label appears White.  If I select those White Labels in Bridge and make them Green, then return to Lightroom and Sync the folder, those formerly Green Labels are converted to White.
Same thing happens with the Reject Flag in Lightroom.  It appears as a White Label in Bridge, which I can understand and wouldn't be a problem, were it not for other Coloured Labels in Lightroom displaying as White in Bridge.
Any one have an explanation for this and more importantly a solution.  Thanks.

I think you have to assign the exact same name to what the colors represent in both Bridge preferences and in Lightroom preferences.
I don't even remember what the default names Adobe assigns to each of them. I changed the words to the right of the Label colors to read "Red", "Yellow", "Green", "Purple", etc.
When in Lightroom I have to "Save Metadata to File" and then when I browse to that folder in Bridge I see the correct Label color.
