Custom Resolutions in iMovie?

As far as I can see, my (maximum) output resolution is set when creating a project (DV/HDV/Mpeg4/etc.). MPEG-4 seems to default to 640x480. Is there any way to change this to whatever I like?
Situation is: I have clips with different resolutions here (e.g. 977x786). I'd like to import them to iMovie, add some text/effects/foo and then export them as MPEG-4 -- in the original quality (resolution). Is this possible? If not, what is the best approach...?

iMovie is a video editor, so the resolution of each type of iMovie project is fixed by the the project type. They vary in size from 640x480 (MPEG-4, with a 4:3 aspect ratio) to 1090x1080 (HD 1080i, with a 16:9 aspect ratio). As a movie/photo is imported to the project it is changed to that project's size. If the aspect ratio of the item doesn't match the project, iMovie adds black borders to preserve the original aspect ratio of the item.
The Timeline of the project can be exported to any size QuickTime movie you want, of course, using iMovie's Expert export mode. To avoid distorting the image, the exported movie would normally use the same aspect ratio as the project.

  • Custom Resolution when VNC'ing with no monitor

    Hi,
I've got my mac-mini wired up to my tv in the front room for use as a media player etc.. This works well with my tv.
However I also want to write iPhone applications, which involves VNC'ing from my windows computer.
When my TV is off, it gives me a choice of about 4 resolutions, none of which match the resolution of my windows computer.
I tried downloading 'switchresx', to add a custom resolution, but it just says 'invalid' next to the entry I added.
Is there some other way of setting a custom resolution for when I want to control my MM from another computer ?
    Cheers
    Rich.

Hah, wow. You're right. pacman overwrote the file, and I wasn't paying attention. A quick
    cp /etc/resolv.conf.pacorig /etc/resolv.conf
    fixed it. Thanks!

  • Can I create a custom resolution of 1440x900 for my retina screen in a bootcamp Windows 7?

I was wondering the best setting for using Windows 7 on my Retina screen with the intention of gaming. I was thinking that 1440 x 900 would be the best resolution as 4 retina pixels will map exactly to 1 on screen pixel.  Unfortunatey this does not exist in the settings.
NVIDA does allow custom resolution but gives a big warning about it destroying your screen - so I thought I would ask before I create one. If I create a custom resolution of 1440x900 and leave all other settings as default, will this be ok for the retina screen?
Also, am I barking up the wrong tree? Should I set it to a different already support resolution?
What do other people find the best resolution for gaming?

As far as I know, you're limited to what is provided; there's no way to customize it.

  • I've created a custom resolution using SwitchResX

and i cant figure out how to apply it. It does not show up in the system prefs or the current resolutions box of switchresx...
any help would be much appreciated.
I'm trying to use my samsung HDTV (model HLR4266wx/xaa) as a secondary monitor for my 15" MBP...
So far i've been able to get a custom resolution (1280 x 720 - 60 Hz) to be active, but how do i actually apply it to the TV? I'm probably an idiot - but it's not available in the system prefs or the current resolutions box (and I can't even w\switch between the ones that do show up...)
    help please - thanks

+none of the available resolutions are any good+
When you have the external Display Preference Panel showing on the external screen and you click the 'Colour' Tab what Display Profiles are showing there, if you uncheck 'Show profiles for this display only' do others appear, are none of the options any good ?
You need to create a new Profile by the sound of it, click 'Calibrate' across right and follow all the prompts and adjustments until you get things looking right then save it with a name ...
If you already have a valid profile make sure it's in either:
    /Library/Colorsync/Profiles (System wide)
    ~/Library/Colorsync/Profiles (User folder)
Then it should show in the Preference Panel mentioned above.

  • Custom resolution in hyper-v guest

Hello i see 1600x1200 is the max resolution supported in guest.
This is ok, since I need lower than that, but I need 1600x900 and all options seem to be missing.
Is there a way to use my custom resolution? I know rdp will do it but on a security policy here  I cannot use rdp on that machine...
Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Just curious as to how your policy considers RDP (which can be controlled by policy) to be a less secure method of server management when compared to Hyper-V Manager which requires either local host access or server administration tools.
i'm agree with Ted. RDP is not unsecure because you can use various method to "protect" RDP connection. for example you can use RDS Gateway to make SSL connection between client and server and this is very good when you need to manage the server outside
the Corporate LAN. Hyper-V Manager require many tasks if you more then one admin, especially if they have different permission.
maybe, sometimes, is better the direct connection (for example when you must change the network configuration) but for the ordinary tasks you can work with RDP.

  • How can I set a custom resolution on a MacbookAir for an external monitor?

I've been trying to set a custom resolution on my macbook air for an external monitor but the only options displayed are 1280x1024 and 800x600. How can I bring up more options? Thanks!

Your Mac sets those resolutions (and the display NAME) based on the information your display provides when a query is sent at Startup. If those are the only resolutions shown, then your display has said that is all it can do.
What display is this, and what Interface is being used?
This pane will tell you more about what the display has reported:

  • MSI gtx 460 768mb OC - custom resolution problem

    Hellow,
recently bought this card and I want to connect to TV with a resolution 1360x768, but it is not supported, please help me.( I use VGA cable connection, because HDMI cable does not work for me). How can I set my own resolution.
    Thanks in advance

First right click blank area of desktop and in the menu that pops up select 'NVIDIA Control Panel', in the window that opens up at the upper left under 'Select a task click on 'Change screen resolution' and you get this window and click the 'Customize' button:
You then get this window and click 'Create Custom Resolution' button:
You then get this window and this is where you enter the information for your custom resolution:
These screenshots taken from my PC using NVIDIA drivers 260.89 with my 465 GTX. It seems to me yours would work out the same way.
If it doesn't work for you then I don't know what else you can try.

  • Photo resolution in iMovie

I'm trying to make a presentation using 30 short video clips and several hundred photos. The video clips look great, however when I import the photos into iMovie, the resolution is terrible and extremely noticeably different than the same photos in iPhoto. Why is this and how can I fix it? I love iMovie but cannot give this presentation with the photos looking so bad. Please help!

Why is this and how can I fix it?
Video resolution is poor: it is only NTSC 720x576 or PAL 720x576 so all those mgeapixel image are downsampled IF you import them to iMovie.
iMovie 4-5 have a bug you should be aware of, too:

  • Problem with iSight resolution in iMovie 08

Every time I change the resolution for the iSight camera in iMovie 08 it freezes. It seems to work fine at vga resolution but not the higher resolution that it gives me as an option. It worked one time so far and don't ask me how. After it freezes and I quit iMovie the camera can't be used by any application including iMovie until the computer is restarted. Is anyone able to help me out with this problem? If any more details are needed I would be happy to give them. Thanks.

I've answered my own problem. It has to do with the "created" date; most of these clips came over from my PC, so they all have the same date. By modifying that, you resolve the problem and it reorders the clips.

  • Ideal photo resolution for iMovie

What is the ideal resolution for the photos I import into iMovie. I plan to make a DVD to be shown on hi res TV, as well as video projection.

I don't think the format would be an issue either.
Remember that iMovie will be converting your single "frame" into multiple frames (turns and image into "video").
Others have posted warnings about Ken Burns effect and images (search - above right to learn more).
I use QuickTime Pro (instead of iMovie) when using image formats. No need to convert to video, keeps file size very tiny for Web use and can even do some neat tricks with transitions.
Here is a sample of one of my image only "movies":
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/RedneckTexasXmas/index.html
The gaudy Pepto Bismol pink in some of the images was intended to be "transparent" but the transitions didn't allow it as an option.
Only 4 MB's in file size. An iMovie version would have been over 300 MB's.

  • Import resolution in iMovie 11

I still have iMovie 08 - I was never interested in making video until now. The resolution of imported movie clips is terrible. Is iMovie 11 improved with the resolution of import video?

there are 4  resolutions by standard for video, 720x480 (NTSC), 756x576 (PAL), 1280x720 ('lite') and 1920(1440)x1080 ('FullHD') ... all fully supported since version 5 of iMovie ...

  • Image Resolution in imovie.

Whats up with imovie changing the resolution of any "still" images you drag in the time line???? I did read some posts on this forum to get the best resolution, tried changing the size in iphoto etc. etc. but i still get these slighlty blurred images in the timeline. I'm doing a project for the local school where all my images and videos will be displayed thru a projector system ( in a planetarium) and I'm trying to avoid any type of picture and video compression on the files.
Is there a better video/image editing software that *will not* compress these media files and have the video/pics synced to audio without breaking the bank?
Final cut pro would be way out of my league for doing siimple editing, cross fades, transitions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

... very hard to analyze the reason for 'flutter' remotely.. and esp, when not knowing, what 'flutter' means... (select, Apple-ctrl-D ... : ahhh, THAT flutter.. )
... basicly, your project's native codec is DV, which is 13GB/h... a DVD is by standard mpeg2, which is ~2-4GB/h ... = much more compressed...
    some (silly) recommendations:
    1) lower brightness/contrasts on TV ...
I know a few people, +all knobs to max+ ... lower brightness from max. down to get a black 'black', and raise contrasts from min. to get a white 'white' ..
    2) use a different connection between DVDplayer and TV... I prefer Scart.
    3) lower brightness of original pics. a TV is no computer screen..

  • Resolution is iMovie is always better than any other exported version

    Hi folks -
I've used iMovie to make a few montages (photos/music/some video). When I watch the "movie" on iMovie it looks great - crisp, high resolution. But when I choose any format to compress it to, even the highest resolution, it is automatically degraded. Is there any way I can save the final cut in a resolution that won't lose image quality? Right now I've been keeping the iMovie working file on my hard drive (taking up a ridiculous amount of space) because it's the best way to watch it.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

even the highest resolution, it is automatically degraded
No. Exporting from iMovie 6.0.3/4 (other versions like iMovie 4.0.1 may behave differently...) via File > Export > QuickTime > Full Quality preserves all quality of a iMovie DV project.
I archive my edited iMovie clips as <9 min 30 sec clips exported this way as .dv files.
Exporting to tape also preserves all quality but then you may get some dropped frames...
...by default QuickTime Player has low quality deinterlaced playback of DV-encoded clips -- you have to turn on high quality playback of the clip to see all quality. In QT 7 you do this via enabling "Window/Show Movie Properties/Video Track/Visual Settings/High Quality" setting -- do not enable "Single Field" or "Deinterlace" because they deinterlace playback. You can also set "QuickTime Player 7/Preferences.../General/Use high quality video setting when available" to check the "High Quality" box by default (notice that the "Single Field" or "Deinterlace" boxes may have been saved to the file so sometimes you must take care to uncheck them).

  • How to set the Codec, Frame rate, Bit rate, and Resolution for iMovie 10.0.5

To upload a video to Vimeo, I need to be able to set the codec, frame rate, bit rate and resolution to make sure the file is compressed to under 500 MB. Where in iMovie 10.0.5 am I given the option to adjust these settings?
    Thank you!

Another question is in continuous mode, NI DAQmx uses Samples per channel to determine the buffer size. But according to the website you specified, it says if the acquisition is continuous (sample mode on the DAQmx Timing.vi is set to Continuous Samples), NI-DAQmx will allocate a buffer according to the following table. And for sample rate between 100 - 10,000 S/s, the buffer size is 10 kS. So if I set the sample rate to be 5000 S/s, and set the Samples per channel to be 20000, then what exactly the buffer size is? 20 kS or 10 kS?
    Thanks.
