Data in XML vs. Modified with LabelFunction

Hi,
We have a datagrid that is being populated through an HTTPService call that generates an XML via PHP.
We are wondering which of these two scenarios would be faster in terms of load/render times:
a) Load all the data in the XML directly, hence increasing the size of the XML (simplified example below):

OR
b) Load ID values in the XML, keeping XML file size down and placing a labelFunction on the DataGrid where Actionscript would set the values:

private function dgFormatDate(item:Object, column:DataGridColumn):String
if(column.dataField == "@status") {
if(item[column.dataField] == "1"){
var status:String = "Read";
return status;
return item[column.dataField];
Thoughts?
Thanks!

I guess it comes doen to how much xml there is. To be honest I'd for the first option (and have in the past) and aviod the labelFunction logiv for each item. This will increase your maintence time when you change or edit a node etc.
Also I would imagine its quicker for the player to handle the xml, and render wise, not to have to run label function logic for each node.
I think what you should realy be thinking about is more lazy loading. How many xml records you realy need. Ie work more towards showing a it of data, then when the user drills down, go back to the server to load more.
Just my thoughts

• Missing data-sources.xml deploying war with jdeveloper 9i RC

When deploying a war file to an OC4J 1.0.2.2.1 server and error reports during the deployment that data-sources.xml is missing in the application-deployments/xxxx directory. Only the orion-application.xml file is present - which references a data-sources.xml file in the same directory. The problem is : it isn't there.
When I copy the xml files from the applications/xxxx directory to the application-deployments/xxxx directory and redeploy the war file everything works fine.
Is this a configuration issue or a bug ? Anyway, can somebody tell me how I can work around this problem ?
Thanks !

this is a bug and you have already found the workaround.

• Why we need to conver Context Node data into XML file----Export to Excel

Hi All,
Let me clarify my dought........today i have gone through the concept of "Exporting Context Data Using the Webdynpro Binary cache" in SAP Online Help.
From the SAP Online Help pdf document, i have found that, the context node data has been converted first in to XML file,after that file had been stored in the web dynpor binary cache...bla....bla.........
Here my qtn is why they had converted context node data into XML file. With out doing that can not we export context node data to excel file..?

Hi Sesshanna,
it is not neccessary to do that but xml has the advantage, that it can be easily transformed into every output format that might occur in later project stages.
If it's simply about blowing out some Excel, I suggest using an OSS library such as jexcelAPI or Jakarta POI and building the Excel how you need it.

• Embedding inline HTML data in XML using the mx:XML tag with < and >

What is best practice for embedding HTML within the
<mx:XML> tag? Programmatically, I can implement this
successfully:
[Bindable]
public var xmlDP:XML = <component data="<" />;
However, I get the following error if I try to store the same
data inline in an mx:XML tag, as such:
<mx:XML id="xmlDP">
<component data="<" />
</mx:XML>
Error #1095: XML parser failure: Unterminated attribute.
If I change the MXML tag as follows, it works fine:
<mx:XML id="xmlDP">
<component data="&lt;" />
</mx:XML>
Unfortunately, I also can not source the mx:XML tag to an XML
file which uses < or > codes, as it yields the same
results. This leads me to believe that the <mx:XML> tag does
not support the special character codes for < and >, but why?
Incidentally, this code also gives a 1095 error:
<mx:XML id="xmlDP">
<component data="<" />
</mx:XML>
This is causing an issue with my source data as it is not
hand typed into Flex, and standard XML supports the < and
> codes. I have tried a full HTML string, as shown below,
but this also generates the error:
<mx:XML id="xmlDP">
<component data="<b>Test</b>"
/>
</mx:XML>
Many thanks for any input you may have!

I’m generating the XML source file with
Microsoft’s XML Notepad 2007. It will encode invalid special
characters automatically. My understanding is that this is the
proper way to handle the less than symbol in a XML string, that is
to say using the < code.
With respect to the escape and un-escape methods, I am able
to successfully implement these in AS, but not in MXML. This makes
sense considering they are AS methods, but I was hoping to be able
to do something like:
<mx:XML id="xmlDP">
<component data="escape('<');" />
</mx:XML>
This gives the following compilation error:
The value of attribute "data" must not contain the '<'
character.
As does using the escape character as such:
<mx:XML id="xmlDP">
<component data="\<" />
</mx:XML>
Below is an example of what the escape character may be used
for in AS:
var myString:String = "\"";
trace(myString);
// result: "
Likewise, I can escape the < character as such:
var myString:String = escape("<");
trace(myString);
// result: %3C
<mx:XML id="xmlDP">
<component data="%3C" />
</mx:XML>
trace(un-escape(xmlDP.@data));
// result: <
As you can see, using %3C and unescaping in AS will yield the
correct result; however, this is not a practical method of
representing the data in MXML as I would have to write an AS method
to un-escape the XML string anyway, so I might as well just store
the data in AS to begin with. I was hoping for a way to source an
mx:XML object, without having to load it into ActionScript
manually. Here’s an example of the functionality I would
expect:
<mx:XML id="xmlDP">
<component data=">" />
</mx:XML>
trace(xmlDP.@data);
// result: >
Only this does not work for the less than symbol. I’m
assuming at this point that this is a bug in the Flex compiler.
Thanks again for your help troubleshooting this one!

• How can i query oracle database data to xml file with c++?

I want query data to xml file directly in my c++ application .
I know the oracle XSU provide interferce for query data to xml
file directly.
But XSU for oracle8i does not support c++.
I do not know if XSU for oracle9i support c++.
can you tell me?
If i do not use XSU to finish my applicayion.
what interface that oracle provide can help me do my work?
thank you !

BTW why do you want to migrate oracle database data to db2 database? Any specific project requirement like Parallel run with Oracle database (e.g data replication)? Or any other issues - Cost? Manageability? Availability? Business requirements?
Do you need to do a day-to-day data transfer or it is for permanent migration?

• 10.1.3 Migration Issue with data-sources.xml

Hi:
Running into lots of migration issues for an application built in 10.1.3 EA, migrating to 10.1.3. production, mostly in the BC project. Here's one: the database connections built in EA were not carried over to prod, so they needed to get re-built. No biggie. But now the data-sources.xml file in the model project has duplicate entries for my data sources. I have tried directly editting that file and removing the duplicates, but when I go to run my application (ADF Faces & ADF BC) JDeveloper hangs. When I abort JDev and re-start it, the duplicate entries are back in data-sources.xml (and yes, I did save the file after making the changes). It seems that the xml file is built dynamically from definitions stored elsewhere. Where is the source? What will I need to modify to get the changes to take?
Thanks.
Johnny Lee

There is new control over when/whether JDeveloper add/updates your data-sources.xml file for the embedded server. The settings are located here:
Tools | Embedded OC4J Server Preferences | Current Workspace | Data Sources
There are some settings there that control whether/when we update the data-sources.xml

• Export only specific data in XML with Submit by Email button

I have created a form with multiple subforms that includes user input and calculations. One of these subforms contains fields that are bound to a MS Access database to retrieve data for calculations. All of the fields on this subform are bound to the data connection. The data connection, calculations, and submit by email button all work perfectly. My only problem is that the XML data that is being exported includes the data I bound to the MS Access database. I only want the data that the user inputs. I have changed the binding to "none" on all of the calculated fields to restrict them from exporting.
I have attached a copy of the XML file that is generated when the "Submit by Email" button is clicked. I only want the data from the "YTDIncStmt" subform to be included in this file. The "MasterData10K1", "MasterData10K2", and "MasterData10K3" are the actual data connections to the MS Access database.
How do I limit the export to only the data the user input?

I have the very same problem! I am importing data from MS Access and trying to export XML data that I can sync with Quickbooks. But the XML file contains some of my binded MS Access fields, which Quickbooks doesn't know what to do with, and rejects my xml files. I am also looking for a way to submit only selected XML data. You ever find a solution/work around?

• Problem with embedded data-sources.xml and custom UserManager

Hi all,
Our application uses a custom UserManager, which is basically extended from the JDBC UserManager, declared as follows in orion-application.xml:
<user-manager class="com.infocorpnow.a2g.security.oracle.A2GUserManager">
<property name="table" value="pos.users" />
<property name="userNameField" value="username" />
<property name="passwordFiled" value="password" />
<property name="dataSource" value="jdbc/A2GDS" />
<property name="groupMemberShipTableName" value="pos.user_roles" />
<property name="groupMemberShipGroupFieldName" value="role_name" />
<property name="groupMemberShipUserNameFieldName" value="login_id" />
</user-manager>
Since we want to be able to deploy the application several times on the application server, and therefore have each deployment of the ear point to its own datasource (i.e. its own local "A2GDS"), we've found out how to embed data-sources.xml inside the EAR file we're deploying, and modify the orion-application.xml as follows:
<data-sources path="./data-sources.xml" />
And then place data-sources.xml in the same meta-inf folder as the orion-application.xml.
This has worked fine when deploying to the standalone OC4J.
Now when I try to deploy the exact same EAR file in Oracle 9iAS, and I get to the User Manager screen, the Custom User Manager does not show up correctly. It did show up prior to me embedding the data-sources.xml. Please help? This is fairly urgent.
Thanks
Jason

I should also mention I'm using the Java Edition of 9iAS R2 (9.0.3 container) on Solaris.

• Reading data From XML file and setting into ViewObject to Pouplate ADF UI

Hi,
I have following requirement.
I would like to read data from XML file and populate the data in ViewObject so that the data can be displayed in the ADF UI.
Also when user modifies the data in the ADF UI, it should be modified back into to ViewObject.
Here is an example - XML file contains Book Title and Author. I would like to read Book Title and Author from XML file and set it into ViewObject Attribute and then display Book title and Author in ADF UI page. Also when user modifies Book title and Author, I would like to store it back in View Object.
Please help me with this requirement and let me know if any solution exist in ADF, for populating the ADF UI screen fields with external XML file data.
Thanks
