Database access JSP page

I am currently writing a JSP program to add/modify/delete projects. If the user wants to add or modify then I show textboxes or select inputs for the inputs and if it's delete, I just display the text. In order to populate the select inputs, I need to query separate tables from a database. Now here's the question...What is the best way to populate them?
Another question I have concerns if the user is modifying the project. I want the select box to have the item they chose previously to be selected. How would I do this without having to talk to the database too much?

I think you should put the two fields into one table,then you can query each field based on the user' information passed from JSP pages.
The second question is eary.You can use "javascript" to locate the selection to the item which user has chosed previously,and query the selection values from database.

If you know how to use struts and portlets, you wouldn't be asking this question. I suggest looking into the Model-View Controller pattern to get an idea how to set up a web application, then think about how to do it in a portlet environment.

Open and close database connection jsp page

Access jsp pages in WEB-INF directory

I've a problem with my jsp web project;
practically I've created a web project that uses jsp pages and servlet.
I never use links to jsp pages, directly in my web pages, but I call always first servlet;
the servlet call jsp pages.
My project is completed and works fine, but any user can access to my jsp pages directly simply writing the url.
So I've tried to move my jsp pages in the WEB-INF directory, but now I doesn't manage in accessing index.jsp page;
how must I do to access index.jsp page?
I've tried to modify web.xml like this

     </welcome-file-list>
but doesn't work;
besides also servlet calls to jsp pages doesn't work anymore.

ok, so first you have to implement the Filter interface, with 3 methods,
the main method u have to put logic in is doFilter()

Problem connecting oracle database to jsp pages using Apache Tomcat server 8.0

Well...I tried too many things..googled so many times..but still could not find solution to my problem.
I use windows 8 Enterprise Edition(if this has to do something with the problem)

My oracle is installed in the D: drive and tomcat in c:. i copied the ojdbc6.jar file from oracle to lib directory of tomcat server.
Then i set CLASSPATH in environment variables as "C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 8.0\lib\ojdbc6.jar" in system variables
My path variable is set as "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_02\bin".

Can't fix a problem 'till an actual problem is identified.

That appears to be ODBC drivers looking for a DSN (Data Set Name). If it wants a DSN, the DSN has to be specified in the code, and the DSN has to be configured in the windows host ODBC applet. So that is at least two squirrels to get in the right tree before moving forward. A ...host:...[port:]SID|service name are some of the bits needed in a jdbc connect string, and that is in no way related to DSNs. A Whole Different Animal. If it wants a DSN that might be what needs to go in the URL bit.
And ODBC setups can be confusing, especially if an x64 OS is in the mix- if that is the case there are two different ODBC configuration applets, one for x64 the other for x86, and if one gets as far as talking to an actual database it might toss an architecture error. Only way to fix that "problem" is *delete* the ODBC DSN and then run the correct (maybe the x86) ODBC config utility, and set up the DSN. Again.

Subject content missing access JSP page on Unix

Display values from database in jsp page

Hi,
I need to display a list of options with checkboxes in a jsp page .The values are retrived from DB.

Not able to connect to database through JSP page

and also put the jar file in all the WEB-INF sub folders inside C:\apache-tomcat-6.0.16\webapps (I know it had to go in one of the WEB-INF dir, but as I was not sure which one, I put the jar file in all of the WEB-INF folders)

I've properly set my classpath to C:\Program Files\mysql-connector-java-5.1.6\mysql-connector-java-5.1.6-bin.jarI don't think that does anything. You aren't compiling a .java file.
If you put mysql-connector-java-5.1.6-bin.jar in the directory:
apache-tomcat-6.0.x/libit will be available to all your applications.

Error while trying access JSP page first time using Oracle Lite

We are doing a proof of concept using Oracle Lite 10gR3. Installed Mobile server and published a JSP based application. Installed web-to-go setup.exe on a client machine and synchronized the application. However when we tried to open the page, it comes up with an error. We are using jdk version 1.4. Access JSP pages under WEB-INF

Hello, I have a web application and i use Java,JSP, servlets etc.
In my webpage i have three different categories of users
*1)* Registered users
*2)* Not Registered users
*3)* Administrator
I would like the welcome page index.jsp and register page be accessed by everyone.
But as far as the other pages are concerned , i would like to be accessed only by the registered users.
What shall i do??
I placed the index.jsp and register.jsp under the public folder and the other pages under WEB-INF folder in order to be accesses only from the registered users.
But it's not working!
What exactly shall i do in order to make that work??

Yes, security constraining through web.xml is a url pattern based protection for your resources. You could create multiple urls - /secured/* and map them to your resources accessible to registered users only or you may have /admin/* and define that only 'admin' roles have access to these resources. Some portions of such setup would be server specific (eg: how you create users and map them to roles)

It's the Container. Because such features are mandated by the spec, the container provides an implementation and options to customize the implementation (for example in weblogic, you can specify that your users are bound to an LDAP or configured in a Users table in the db)
Nevertheless, you would have your own Controllers for your application management (Struts or Spring or whatever suits your need). On the same note, you should have your own Filters to implement whatever common logic you have across your application.

This is the other road I was talking about. You could throw all configuration and j2ee based security configuration out of the window (they do have their limitations) and implement custom security logic in a Filter. For example,

i'am inserting the row in database. from jsp page i'am retrieving that row. my doubt is when i insert the row in database at the same time it should be retrived from the jsp page simultaneously.I know this can be done using autoRefresh.but how can i autoRefresh the jsp page what is the procedure to autoRefresh the jsp page.other than autoRefresh

why will you need an auto refresh?.. from what page are you inserting? same as the page that enters the data into the database?

JSP pages not working on app server but works locally

My application uses java, struts and jsps. When I try to access JSP page like http://appServer:7778/app/login.jsp, it says page not found exception. But when I access http://appServer:7778/app/login.do, it displays login.jsp page (success url for login action is login.jsp). How come I am not able to access jsp pages directly? Am I missing any settings?
And when I run the application using embedded OC4J of Jdeveloper, I could access jsp pages directly.

The method getTextContent() is DOM Level 3, and was introduced with Java1.5
Tomcat 5.5 runs on Java1.5, but by default uses the JDT compiler for JSPs, which is only Java1.4 compliant - might possibly be that.

Unable to access values from database in login page..

As long as you're unable to compile Java code, please use the 'New to Java' forum. This is really trival.
To ease writing, debugging and maintenance, I highly recommend you to write Java code in Java classes rather than JSP files. Start learning Servlets.

How to retrieve records from a database and display it in a jsp page.Help!!

First i ll explain what is my requirement or needed.
Actually in my web page i have text box to enter start date and end date
and one list box to select the month .If user select or enter the dates in text box
accordingly the data from ms access database has to display in a jsp page.
Im using jsp and beans.
I tried returning ResultSet from bean but i get nothing display in my web page
instead it goes to error page (ErrorPage.jsp) which i handle in the jsp.
I tried many things but nothing work out please help me to attain a perfect
solution. I tried with my bean individually to check whether the result set has
values but i got NullPointerException . But the values which i passed or
available in the database.
I dint get any reply for my last post please reply atleast to this.

The JSP wil be converted into a java file and then compiled into a class. If you are using tomcat, the java file will be somewhere in the work folder of your tomcat installation. Find the java file and check the line that is reported in the exception to see where the null-pointer is coming from.
