Database and labview 8.5

I am looking to do some database code for an application in labview 8.5 and windows XP (maybe vista as well). I havent done much database with labview in a few years and am looking for any pitfalls to avoide. I need do choose the right DBMS access, mySql ..... and also know if there are know issues og the database toolkit. Has anyone had any problems or suscess using 8.5 and databasing. I will be writing moderate amounts of data to the data base, I will be updating fields several times per minute and the system will run mostly continous 24/7

Hi Paul,
You should be able to use the Database Connectivity Toolkit with LabVIEW 8.5 just fine. There is a list of supported databases here so you should be able to select the database you want.

LabVIEW is a full-fledged programming language. Like C, C++, C#, Java, etc. With respect to your specific objective, nothing can really be said beyond that. You would need to design your system and determine what you need from a programming language, look at the various possibilites and then decide for yourself which is the best route to take. One could just as well ask "Can C be used to develop an expert database management system with fuzzy querying capability?". How would you answer that?

How to connect mysql database to labview and plot the graph

I am doing my final year project about labview. I need to connect my mysql workbench database to labview and plotting two sinwave in same graph. I can already connected my labview to mysql and showing the data in labview table.But I need to plot the two sinwave in on graph according to table data. Eg: table data&colon;      timestamp   wind speed wind direction

The attachemtn vi is about inserting file and plot the graph. And now I want plotting the sinwave using table data and the wind speed Y-axis,wind direction Y-axis in both side of my graph and the X-axis is showing the whole day timing like 00:00:00-24:00:00.  Can anybody combine these 2 vi to polting the graph according table data not according to file data.Thanks

I am using the database connectivity toolkit to retrieve data using a SQL query. The database has 1 million records, I am retrieving 4000 records from the database and the results are taking too long to get, is there any way of speeding it up?

I am using the "fetch all" vi to do this, but it is retrieving one record at a time, (if you examine the block diagram) How can i retrieve all records in a faster more efficient manner?

If this isn't faster than your previous method, then I think you found the wrong example. If you have the Database Connectivity Toolkit installed, then go to the LabVIEW Help menu and select "Find Examples". It defaults to searching for tasks, so open the "Communicating with External Applications" and "Databases" and open the Read All Data. The List Column names just gives the correct header to the resulting table and is a fast operation. That's not what you are supposed to be looking at ... it's the DBTools Select All Data subVI that is the important one. If you open it and look at its diagram, you'll see that it uses a completely different set of ADO methods and properties to retrieve all the data.

Saving data in a database and publishing data to multiple clients

Hi there. I'm using a bunch of Compact FieldPoint modules to read out a few hundred voltages, temperatures, currents, etc. I acquire this data at about 1 Hz (pretty slow). I would like to record this data to some sort of database on a cpu (running LV 8.0, connected to the FieldPoint mods), and serve the data to multiple (between 10 and 50) clients over the net, each running a compiled stand-alone "data grabber and viewer" application (which I'll have to write of course). I'd like these external clients to basically be able to pick a certain variable from the database, and plot it for the last week (or something like that). Presumably the standalone client would send some database query to the server. The server would then send the data to the client, and the standalone client would receive the data and plot it as the user sees fit. My question is how to implement this database? Should I use the LabView "Database" Add-On to create a database to store the data? Is it better to just store the data as binary and write my own data fetching routine to handle queries? How can I write this database to disk for permanent storage? Could this database be accessible outside of LabView?
Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Jesse,
The Citadel database is not a relational database. It's highly optimized for storing lower-rate (non-waveform) channel-by-channel, or "trace" measurement data. Another option you can consider is using DSC and Citadel on the server then writing a utility to export the data from Citdael to an SQL database. --That would solve the problem of having to write a logger application from scratch. You would only have to write the relatively simple application to export the data from Citadel and import it into a relational database.
You could accomplish this two ways. First, DSC includes a set of VIs that will retrieve historical data from Ciatdel. You could use LabVIEW to parse this data and write it to a table in a relational database. Second, Citadel actually includes a locally accessible ODBC interface. (You can query Citadel using an SQL query from the local computer). You could query Citadel using this interface, then write the result to a table in a relational database.
To view Citadel in its native format or query a Citadel database using ODBC from a remote comptuer that comptuer would need to have a licensed DSC RTS installed.

Write to Citadel database from LabVIEW?

Hi. I'm a newbie when it comes to Lookout and the Citadel database... so here's my question for you all:
We have various labview applications that log data from instruments. We would like to be able to take this data and store it as "tags" in a Citadel database.
What do you think is the best way to do this?
There are ODBC drivers for the Citadel database, but they appear to only allow you to query the database to retrieve values... you can't write data to the database (so its read-only).
Are they any "Lookout VIs" or Citadel VIs that can write to the Citadel DB from LabVIEW? Or a DLL or something?
Any ideas?

Very nice question John Paul. I take it you already have Lookout and LabVIEW. In this case, with the latest versions of either, simply use the LabVIEW datasocket to publish the items on your front panel. Lookout then can subscribe to these once you register the LabVIEW computer. Once you have subscribed to them in Lookout, you are then able to set up logging. You may need to create an expression object to route the data to citadel.
If you just want to use LabVIEW and the Citadel database, you might try VI Logger. This works in our configuration utility - MAX, and also comes with a set of VIs for LabVIEW. One caveot, the Citadel database in VI logger is newer (and faster) than the Citadel database in Lookout. I believe NI is working to synchronize
the version in the future, and its hard to say when. So till then, you would not be able to merge data in the dislike citadel databases. However, you can always use and ODBC call set to extract from both and store in a more permanent SQL database such as access, oracle, ms back office, etc.

How to create an SQL Database using LabVIEW??

Hi all,
I have been using LabVIEW for quite a long time but now I am doing something which I am totally new to. I have a VI which gives out a table as output. What I am trying to do is, I want to create an SQL databse and save this table in the database and I want to pass the value of this table to the SQL Database once in every 24 hours. As I dont have any knowledge of My SQL I am totally stuck.
Can anyone help me by telling me how to do this.?? An example code will be well appreciated.

I have to figure it out how to do this, but .... no idea. Also i have to make a search in that database. Labview configuration files are very easy to use and can hold any type of information you wish. There are functions in the File palette ready to use for configuration files. A configuration file is similar to a registry entry. You can have sections and keys. So you can create a section called "Data1" and keys called "Name", "Age", etc. Create the same for a new section called "Data2", and so on. The functions are useful for writing the config file and reading from the file. To read a certain piece of data, just supply the section name and the key name. So you could ask for section "Data20", key "Name", and you would get the 20th name in the database (config file). This way you don't have to write code to search the database for certain items, the functions do it for you and they are already written. Look into config files. They are very easy to use, very useful, and very underused even by the most experienced LV programmer.

TDMS database and treat its values as real time data.

I'm newbie in using labview. Actually I wanna import data from TDMS database and treat it as real time data. Although I have done the first part which is importing the data inside the program by reading TDMS and selecting channels and groups, I couldn't find way for second part which is treating data as real time one. I tried Build Waveform, but it didnt work. Would you please help me to solve this problem ? I appreciate your helps.

I don't understand your word "build waveform". If you write waveform data to a tdms file, you will read waveform data directly from the tdms file.
If you are using LabVIEW 2012 (download from http://www.ni.com/trylabview), you could find a tdms example VI in "C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2012\examples\file\plat-tdms.llb\TDMS - Concurrent File Access.vi". This example VI demonstrates how to write Sine Waveform into a tdms file and read the Sine Waveform from the tdms file.

ActiveX and TCP/IP are both good choices for high-level communication
between Windows applications. LabVIEW's VI Server, introduced in version
5.0, gives you tremendous power to control LabVIEW programmatically and
exposes it to the programmer via either ActiveX or TCP/IP.
For a very nice example that shows how to call a LabVIEW VI with arguments
passed from the C++ environment, then bring the resulting data from
LabVIEW back to C++, check out the following example from NI's site:

I will try to illustrate it with an example since it all will depend on the type of application you would like to implement. Let's say you would like to implement an application where you log data, maybe exchange data with databases and you acquire a bunch of data points at a time not performing any type of control and where high determinism is not needed. In this case LabVIEW for Windows work great. If you on the other hand would like to implement a closed-loop application where you need high determinism and reliability and will acquire data point by point you would use LabVIEW RT which is an add-on to LabVIEW. I.e. you need LabVIEW + LabVIEW RT when developing an RT application.

Error involving Report Generation Toolkit and Labview Run Time Engine

Developed an application using LabVIEW 6.1 and LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office 1.0.1. From there, tried to build a shared application for use with the LabVIEW Run Time Engine. The Run Time version functions properly until "New Report.vi" is called and then an error is generated, code 7, calling out "Open VI Reference in New Report.vi" could not be found. When building the application, I did include the "NI Reports Support" in the advanced installer options. The machine used for original development and application build is running Windows XP Pro and Office XP. Any suggestions??

I am having the exact same problem but with LV 6.1 and M/S WORD 2000. It appears that the "New Report.vi" is trying to open "C:\APP.DIR\Word_Open.vi" and "C:\APP.Dir\Word_Open_Document.vi" by reference. The "OFFICE 2000.TXT" says that "_exclsub.llb and _wordsub.llb must be added as support files when building an application or a dynamic link library with the application builder." I added them as Support Files and I copied them to the "C:\TESTER\" where the TESTER.EXE is and I still get ERROR 7 in "NEW REPORT.VI" at VI OPEN REFERENCE.
Do I need to make a "C:\TESTER\DATA\" sub-dir and put the support files there?
I am building on MY COMPUTER on F: Drive on a network and transporting files to the real Tester.
I displayed my App.Property of APP.DI
R at start up and it is C:\TESTER\ ! How would my application know that "Word_Open.vi" and "Word_Open_Document.vi" are actually inside the _wordsub.llb?
Any ideas ?

Logical Database and Logical Thing

Hi,
i want to access KONV which is cluster table and the field is KWERT.
The thing is that i want to access it by taking customers from KNVV and giving it to VBRK (SALES Table). Now in VBRK i want to have a selection on FKDAT to get a list of Customers stored in the field called KUNAG.
on VBRK-KUNAG basis i want to access the table KONV-KWERT.
If i am doing queries then the System stops responding cuz it has got alot of overhead. So i tried to use Logical Database called VFV.
If this is the best solution means using LDB then how to use it, can anyone help me with this. I tried it by Function module but it is showing all data without considering selection criteria.
If anyone can help me then plz do answer or refer me to any web site so that i can figure this thing out. If anyione has got a good book on that then plz feel free to mail me.

I used FREE_SELECTION_INIT, FREE_SELECTION_DIALOG and then FREE_SELECTIONS_RANGE_2_WHERE to get ther Selections in one table.
if u want me to send u the code then i can do that cuz i am getting so much mad that this work is not done yet.
The Scenario here is that we want to take BILLED Customers and VKORG as Industrial Billing Customer and then taking VBRK and giving all these Customers and then taking selection on FKDAT range.
Now after that the data should be collected from KONV-KWERT and i want to perform some calculation over it. I am using VFV (Logical Database) to perform this thing because i know that it would be very fast then applying my own queries.
If you can mail me any book on Logical Database and Dynamic selection then it will be very Helpful.

Reference to database and/or server name in '' is not supported in this version of SQL Server

Hello all
I am using C# and ADO.NET (native) - Visual Studio 2013.
I am always using full qualified queries like "SELECT * FROM [database].[schema].[table]"
Obviously there is a problem when doing this against SQL Azure,
I get the following error: "Reference to database and/or server name in '' is not supported in this version of SQL Server"
Interesting fact: With SQL Management Studio, the same query works.
I need to know if this error is really a true one or not.
If yes, I can quit using SQL Azure. I would need a SQL Server and not a partial SQL Server :-)

Hi,
Here are my suggestions:
1. Use partially qualified queries, because:
a. from a security standpoint, you'd want to limit your login's access across the server instance
b. in order to achieve a even better, you should specify your database as the Initial Catalog directly in the SQL Connection.
If you take into account these practices, SQL Database doesn't come with any limitation from that point of view.
However, in regard to 'With SQL Management Studio, the same query works', this is actually only partially true because if you run that query agains ADO.NET, you'll actually end up in switching databases along the query which is obviously not permitted in
SQL Database since you're running in a hosted black-box version of SQL you're not managing. It's just like running the USE <dbname> command which obviously doesn't work.
