Database Links and Character Sets

Can I link a ARABIC Character set database to an English Character one using database links. The Application running on the Arabic database needs to read and write into the English one using a database link.

Shouldn't be a problem, assuming that all the English characters you want to represent can be properly encoded in the source system's character set. Shouldn't be a problem unless you start dealing with things like Microsoft's curly quotes.

Is it possible to change [some easier straigtht forward way] the encodings and character set for a database [DB11 in this case]?
I have a database which has UTF16 and MSWIN1252 as the encoding and characterset, i want to change it to UTF8 for some testing and reasons.

You should detail what you mean by encoding and character set.
A database has 2 character sets:
- the character set for CHAR, VARCHAR2 and CLOB
- the national character set for NCHAR, NVARCHAR2 and NCLOB.
You have 2 ways to change the database character set:
- with ALTER DATABASE statement
- with export/import

NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS (i think it is how database was created)
NLS_INSTANCE_PARAMETERS (this instance)
NLS_SESSION_PARAMETERS (this you can set just for your login session).

Oracle XE and character set

Hello all,
I installed Oracle XE on RHEL 4 Linux and I found out that database character set is AL32UTF8. Does anyone know why oracle choose this character set? Maybe because of NLS_LANG env variable? Is it possible to change it to EE8ISO8859P2? Since database is still empty I can drop it and crate new database.
Do you think it is possible to set some env variables and do new oracle xe instalation including database with iso charset?
I want to have EE8ISO8859P2 charset because of doing exp/imp from another oracle iso db to oracle xe and it is much easier to do this without charset conversion.
Any help will be appreciated.

When you download XE, you have a choice - take the 'western european' character set download, or the 'unicode' download.
No other choices.

Utl_file and character sets

hello,
we are using AL32UTF8 character set in our database, I have a PL/SQL routine reading a csv file with utl_file into the database, Client using UTF-8 (Toad). When I have a UTF-8 csv file, everything works fine. But I want to be able to read ANSI aswell. Is there a way to read ANSI files aswell with utl_file ?
ps: I used CONVERT(v_line, 'UTF8', 'WE8MSWIN1252') and it worked. Is there a way I can read out the character set of the csv file with PL/SQL, so I dont need to use a parameter ?

Too bad your Oracle installation doesn't have a version number or use any DDL so we would know what you are doing.
Are you using GET_LINE or GET_LINE_NCHAR or something else.

Transport tablespaces between databases with different character sets

Hi everyone:
I have two 10R2 databases on the same hp-ux 64bit server, 1st one with NLS_CHARACTERSET=US7ASCII, 2nd one with
NLS_CHARACTERSET=AL32UTF8.
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET on both databases is AL16UTF16.
Can I transfer tablespaces from the 1st one to the 2nd. The data could be in English, French & Spanish.
If not what are my options?

First off, if you are storing French and Spanish data in database 1 where the character set is US7ASCII, you've got some serious problems. US7ASCII doesn't support non-English characters (accents, tildes, etc). If you're storing data this way, you've introduced data corruption that you'd have to resolve before copying the data data over to another machine.
Second, technically, the source and target character set have to be identical. Since US7ASCII is a strict binary superset of AL32UTF8, you could theoretically transport a US7ASCII tablespace to an AL32UTF8 database. In your case, though, since the data is not really US7ASCII, you'd end up with corruption.
Any of the Oracle built-in replication options is going to require that you resolve the corruption issue. Assuming that you can figure out what character set the source database really is, you could potentially dump the data to flat files (taking care not to allow character set conversion to take place) and SQL*Loader them into the destination system by identifying the proper character set in your control file. That's obviously going to be a rather laborious process, though.

Query distributed database with different character sets.

Hello experts, this is my situation:
I have two databases A and B, the same version 11.1.0.7, the same OS Suse Linux Enterprise 10 but with different character sets, A has WE8MSWIN1252 while B has AL32UTF8. The database B is my XML DB repository so there I have some XML type tables. I need to query this tables from the database A using a dblink and in fact I have done that but the XML content is trasformed due to the different character sets between the databases. Some time there are data loss and some time there are data missmatch.
Is there any way to query the tables stored in the database B without problems? I do not know if the following is correct: Maybe I can set the character set for the session in the database A during the time it query the database B. That is, change the character set in fly at session level.
Do you have any special suggestion?

The Globalization Support Guide for 11.1.0.7 has a chapter on character set migration that should be helpful. AL32UTF8 is a superset of WE8MSWIN1252 but it is not a strict superset. That is, it doesn't meet the second prong of the test in the documentation
The new character set is a strict superset of the current character set if:
Each and every character in the current character set is available in the new character set.
Each and every character in the current character set has the same code point value in the new character set. For example, many character sets are strict supersets of US7ASCII.Exporting the data from the A, changing the character set (or creating a new database with the AL32UTF8 character set), and then importing the data may be the easiest approach in your case.

Additional language and character sets in R/3

Our SAP for Retail R/3 system (GUI 470 Basis 620) is about to incorporate some new stores we are opening in the Czech Republic. With English (EN) and German (DE) languages installed, we are able to type, display and save to the database all of the Czech characters apart from two of them. It seems a bit silly to install a whole new language (CZ) for these two characters alone. Is it possible to somehow add an additional character set to SAP that would contain the Czech character set? We are happy for Czech users to log on in English so we don't need to see Czech characters in standard field descriptions in the GUI, but users will want to type these characters into items such as material/article description fields.
Any advice as to the best way to go with this would be greatly appreciated.

CS belong to 1401 code and EN/DE belongs to 1100.. few char-sets might match others might not..
Best practice is to install the language..
You are not know about the future whih CS words that the users might type in.

Can't Create Database with SJISYEN character set

I am trying to create a new database in Oracle 10g using the SJISYEN character set. The summary page display in the Database Configuration wizard shows the following
Character Sets
Database Character Set JA16SJISYEN
National Character Set AL16UTF16
The database gets created successfully with no errors, but when I query the V$NLS_PARAMETERS view, the NLS_CHARACTERSET is reported as US7ASCII
Should I be able to create a database with the SJISYEN character set with Oracle 10g?

Can you please run the following SQL statement and see what you get:
SQL>
1 select * from nls_database_parameters
2* where parameter like '%CHARACTERSET'

Problem in database link for value set table

Hi All,
We are using a table from a different database in our valuset. This database we are refering via a DBLINK. But the DBLINK name is again stored in a table and will change from instance to instance i.e (development and production).
Please let us know if there is a way to make use of the above table with out hardcoding DB link.
Eg: MRP_AP_APPS_INSTANCES - This table has the DBLINK name
Vauset uses - tablename@dblinkname
if we give
select * from tablename@(select A2M_DBLINK from MRP_AP_APPS_INSTANCES),
it gives the error database link name expected.
Is there any other way how we can avoid hardcoding the dblink name.

Dbassist and character set's

Hello everyone. I just installed Oracle8i on my Slackware7 linux box and I can not seem to start the dbassist tool that comes with it. When I attempt to start the assistant it throws an JNLS exception, that reads as shown bellow.
"JNLS Exception:oracle.ntpg.jnls.JNLSException Unable to find any National Character Sets. Please check your Oracle installation."
Now my question is (obviously) how do I go about fixing this annoyance? Could one of my Enviorment vars. be causeing this to occur? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

The JNLS error is a bug...What u have to do is just ignore the error and go ahead with the database creation...

Region type URL and character set encoding

Hello,
I'd like to include static html page using URL region, but there is some translation done between encoding of input static html page and output of HTML DB. Does anyone know how the file encoding is translateded when the page is rendered?
I have tried some encodings of input file (CP1250, UTF-8, Unicode) but it did not work.

Otherwise I would assume we are talking about the Database character set, which allows numerous different character sets and types (single-byte, multi-byte, Unicode etc. depending on Oracle release).

Creation of Database link and access the same plus Snapshot creation

i want talk between two oracle server. i decided to go for snapshot creation with periodical refresh. For which i am having two oracle server's with different ip address located inside our office setup.
I have created a database link between two servers.
first server name global
userid scott
password tiger
second server name asil
userid scott
password tiger
both the user have been given dba rights.
in both the server the services and listners are all started. i gave the following command to create database link.
from asil server
create public database link global connect by scott identified by tiger using 'global'
the command was successful and the link was created. Now i tried to access a table of the scott user of the global server.
select * from emp@global;
now it is giving error. I want to know how the link can be created and how it can be accessed. i refered the 8i online documentation and done the things based on that. i expect valuble solution from all possible persons

A reason for this problem could be that your database is configured that a database link has to have exactly the same name like the global name of the database instance it should connect to.
Can you please provide the oracle error code / message ? With this information there might be more hints I can give you.

A question about CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK and ORA-12154 error

Thanks a lot for this nice solution. In fact I had to add the connection parameters into the tnsnames.ora file of the server on which the link was created (not the tnsnames.ora of my oracle client stored on the localhost)
After a bit googling I found another solution that allows to create the database link:

Ora-12154 problem with database link and transparent gateway

Hello,
I’m trying to make a communication between oracle and SQL server 2005.
I use oracle 10g E.E Release 10.2.0.3.0 and the transparent gateway for SQL server 10201_gatway_win32.zip.
Install:
The oracle database is installed into a server named ss-serv. This server has two partition disk C and E. Oracle database is installed in E and the gateway in C. There is already a database (instance) running in the oracle home (in E).
I configured the gateway as described into: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B...3/conf_sql.htm.
In sql server 2005, there is a database running named ClientTricks.
I created a user named Avogadro with a login.
In the partition C where the gateway is installed, the file inittg4msql.ora is like this:
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO= ss-serv. ClientTricks
The file sqlnet.ora where the gateway is installed is configured like this:
SQLNET.AUTHENTIFICATION_SERVICES=(NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH = (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
I configured the listener that is in the C partition where the gateway is installed, and the tnsnames that is in the oracle database in E partition disk like this:

After edited the listener, I stop and start the listener for the transparent gateway from administrative tools in the services.
Then, connected in oracle (in a database named fakeclient) I created a database link in sqlplus.The the dblink were created, but when I tried to querry some data from ClientTricks by executing the following instructions:
select * from s_client@dblink
i got this fatal and terrible error :
ora-12154 TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
I verified all my procedure and stapes, all seems to be good. I did a tnsping of mytg4msql
I got this error in the command prompt:TNS-03505 fail to resolve name
Could someone help me ?
