DDE server name of Adobe Reader DC

After I updated to Adobe Reader DC, some applications (e.g., WinEdt) do not work due to the unknown DDE server name of Adobe Reader DC.
Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance.

  • Why does Reader 11 incorrectly set the DDE Server Name?

It appears to me that the installer is setting the DDE Server name in the registry to 'AcroviewR10' instead of the 'AcroviewR11'.
I confirmed by upgrading from Reader 9.5.x (DDE == Acroview) to Reader 11 (as of Oct 22, 2012) and the new value in the registry (XP and 7) was AcroviewR10.
I know there was a similiar issue when Reader 10 was released. Is there any idea when an update might come out that will fix this? I hate having to give customer's .reg files to fix these issues.
I understand that you are new to updating this variable every release, and so it isn't a part of your checklist yet, but it would be highly appreciated if you could remember that for version 12.

I had this working using the registry lookup this week. During testing on various machines, I found a discrepancy between the registry dde name and the dde name that acrobat would respond to.  I finally just made an array of possible names and iterated through them.
I'm harvesting the application name from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Classes\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application in the registry.
Capitalization does not seem to matter but I'll include the exact caps from my tests.
    Today :
Acrobat XI Pro (11.0.06) shows up in the registry as AcroViewA10 but it responds to acroviewa11.
Acrobat XI Pro (11.0.0) shows up in the registry as AcroViewA10 but it responds to acroviewa11.
Acrobat Reader XI (11.0.06) shows up in the registry as AcroView
R10 but it responds to acroviewr11.
Acrobat X Reader (10.1.9) shows up in registry as AcroViewR10 and responds to acroviewr10.
Reader 9 (9.0.0) shows up in registry as AcroViewA10 and responds to acroview. (The registry may be skewed by having Acrobat XI Pro installed on this machine.)
Reader 7 (7.1.0) shows up in registry as AcroView and responds to acroview.
So, I'm just brute forcing through all 5 known combinations plus 2 for version 12 on the off chance that the naming doesn't break pattern again.
    #define maxnames 7
    DIMENSION acronames (maxnames )
    acronames(1) = "acroview"
    acronames(2) = "acroviewa11"
    acronames(3) = "acroviewr11"
    acronames(4) = "acroviewa10"
    acronames(5) = "acroviewr10"
    acronames(6) = "acroviewa12"
    acronames(7) = "acroviewr12"
    loop
         AcroChanNum = DDEINITIATE(acronames(namecounter ), "Control")
         namecounter = namecounter + 1
          blah blah
    until AcroChanNum >=0

  • DDE Server Name issue

    Hi,
I have installed Adobe Reade X on my machine.
For an application I need to use DDE.
For previous versions of Adobe Reader, the DDE SERVER Name = "Acroview" worked fine.
But for this particular version DDE Server name name is AcroviewR10.
Is there a way to find out the server name from registry?
Earlier the registry path HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application had the value "Acroview".
Even for the latest version the value is the same.
Any help would be highy appreciated.
    Regards,
    Shirish Shitole

I'm adding myself to this forum in hopes to be notified of some resolution.  Our application uses DDE to print PDFs. We have a wide range of customers who are not necessarily experts at maintaining their systems, so we need to be able to reliably determine which version (either Reader or Acrobat) is installed.
We have a number of in house VM machines for testing in various states of reader updates and I have yet to see the registry key have the correct version.  This seems like it should be a pretty simple thing.  We do not want to have to go back to a simple Shell command.
    I will stay tuned.
Also - I have not seen that this is reliable in version X yet, if someone knows differently please say so, so we can at least support that version.  Thanks.

  • How to delete file names from Adobe Reader list

How can I delete file names from the Adobe Reader list?  I have deleted the file & it's empty, but deleted file names remain in my list & it's very annoying.  I can't seem to find an option anywhere to delete the file names.

Thanks for the answer, I will try this & post my results with this method.  I have set the amount to zero, & it seems if I want to put back valid files into my list I first need to find them in another file in my pc, such as documents, open them in Adobe Reader, & then then they will reappear in the Adobe Reader list.  Is this correct?  Thank you!
This seems to be the case, you need to restore each file you want in your list one by one by accessing them elsewhere on your pc, & then you must open them with Adobe Reader to have files reappear in your Adobe Reader list.  However, this seems to be a tedious process if you only want to delete one obsolete file from your list by first emptying the list & rebuilding it file by file.  It works, but I'm wondering if there is a more sensible & efficient way to do this?

  • How to change server name in adobe x download

when i downloaded adobe x i entered the wrong email account an server, not knowing what they meant.  now, when i try to attach pdf to email and send this error shows up as the reason.

Sorry, I don't understand what you are doing.  Downloading Adobe Reader does not require an email address or Adobe ID.
I also don't understand "this error"; please provide more information.

  • Why can I no longer use a period in a file name for Adobe Reader?

I was using Google Chrome to view pdf's but Chrome wasn't following the field tabbing order of the pdf.  To resolve this issue, I decided to try disabling Chrome's pdf viewer so that pdf's would open in Adobe Reader.  It didn't go as planned and decided to go back to using Chrome's pdf viewer.  I can no longer rename a pdf with a period.  Is there a setting may have changed?  I don't know if this is an Adobe or a Chrome issue but I thought I would start with Adobe.  Thank you!

Naming a file with a dot is a dangerous and unpredictable thing to do. Whether it works CAN depend on what comes after the dot.

Using Windows 7, removed AA XI , reinstalled it after purchase last week-- same problem.  It will not open and I get this message "acrobat failed to connect to dde server"
any clues how to get out of the forest? Its very frustrating.

[Moved from the Premiere Pro forum... Mod]

    Hey,
You might try deleting all processes related to Acrobat from the Task Manager and then launch Acrobat again.
Also, please repairing Acrobat from the Help menu.
If still you get the same error, then press (Windows+Run) and type "REGEDIT"
Go to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application" and tell me if the given key is AcroViewA10 or AcroViewR10.

  • Adobe Reader 8 gets focus when opening a document via DDE

We have an application that incorporates Adobe Reader. The application consists of two windows. In one window the user can enter commands, which causes Adobe Reader to display a document in the other window.
Until now, we have used DDE commands to call Adobe Reader 6. This worked fine for the user, as focus stayed in the command window, which meant that the user could issue a number of commands, without having to regain focus.
We have just installed Adobe Reader 8 on our machines and now Adobe Reader steals the focus, every time a DDE command is sent.
Is there a setting we can change to stop Adobe Reader from stealing focus or is there a work around that we can use to avoid the problem?
    Thank you in advance :-)
    Best Regards
    Claus Lykke

Thank you for the reply :-)
Unfourtenetly we cannot just restore focus afterwards. Our command window sends messages asynchronsly to a mainframe system, to find the documents we want to display. The mainframe system posts the documents one after another to a message queue. Our application displays the documents when they arrive on the message queue. This can take up to 10 seconds, if we have to display many documents. Therefore we cannot switch focus forth and back for each document. Also we do not know when Adobe Reader have finished displaying a document, so we do not know how long time to wait, until setting back the focus.

  • What does acrobat failed to connect to DDE server mean?

What does it mean ? Acrobat failed to connect to DDE server

    Hi,
DDE stands for Dynamic Data Exchange, and it is a way for two programs to communicate with each other. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms648711(v=vs.85).aspx
Adobe Reader, or (Acrobat Standard/Pro) would be an example of a DDE server, in that when they are open they can accept unsolicited communication from client programs.
One client could be the fast launch utility.
Because the DDE server is local to your machine, only a server name needs to be decided upon. For instance prior to version 10 Adobe always used 'Acroview' as it's DDE Server Name. For some reason, Adobe claims 'security', They decided to change the DDE Server name for version 10 to AcroviewR10 for reader, and AcroviewA10 for Acrobat.
Because there was decades of old code which had never needed to change many programs stopped working, and began claiming that they couldn't connect to Acrobat.
Adobe, rightly, claimed that it was a bad practice to hard code the DDE Server name into your code, and that a better practice is to get the value from the Registry.
That would have been helpful but Adobe seems incapable of remembering to update this registry key when upgrading their software, even though they update the setting in their software.
For instance right now Adobe is setting the DDE Server name in the registry to AcroviewR10 for Reader 11. What is worse is that their software only responds to AcroviewR11.
So if you hardcode the server name, or create a function to determine what it should be, than you might be ok, but if you accept their good coding practices your applications will fail to work as expected, and your clients will think it is your fault.
    Hope this helps.

  • List of server names

Is it possible to get a list of server names that Adobe uses for hosting Creative Cloud apps and services?
I am stuck behind a whitelisting firewall and any domains I need to access have to be listed specifically.
    Thanks

Well... this morning I tried it again and it worked, without my having to change anything!
I then managed to get Edge Animate to install after simply retrying 20 times.
It seems there was some problem with Adobe's servers but what else is new?

  • Terminal Server 2008 R2 - Adobe 9.0 CPU Usage

We are currently running 5 Windows 2008 R2 64bit, RDS severs with 200 users.  We are having a major problem with adobe reader and running on these servers  Every instance of adobe reader is taking 11-14% of the CPU.  So  once 5-6 people get on the CPU is maxed and starts slowing things down.
    Hardware
    DL360 G6
    2 75 GB drives Mirrored
    16.0 GB Ram
    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5506 @2.13GHZ (@ processors)
The updater is disabled and is no running.
We had adobe Professional 6 installed but that was removed off one of the servers in hope that was causing the issue. No luck the one server only has adobe reader and is still having issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just adding here in the hope it might help someone in the future.  The high CPU usage occurs because you are using redirected Application Data folders in your Terminal Services/RDS/Citrix environment.  As of v9.x (and maybe 8.6) Adobe state (hidden in the release notes) that redirected AppData folders are no longer supported.  I've tested versions from 9.0 to 9.3.3 so far and they all exhibit this behaviour.
From my reading around the web it looks like people have suggested that when Reader starts it checks it has write access to not only the AppData\Adobe folder, but also to the root of the AppData path.  In most cases this is a server name as part of a UNC path and the check will fail.  I have also tested redirecting by GPO to a mapped drive (the users homedrive on H:\) but the path gets expanded to the full UNC path when being parsed by the app so the same CPU consumption seems to happen.
Only fixes I've seen work are downgrading to a prior version (prior to 8.6 according to some on the web), or stopping the AppData folder redirection and setting it back to be part of the profile path. When stopping AppData redirection I have also set the AppData folder to be excluded from the roaming profile via GPO, and use a Profile Management tool (e.g. Flex or Citrix Profile Management) to copy only the relevant parts of AppData to the network in an effort to prevent negatively impacting logon times too much.
    Hope this helps.
    Azza.
