Deciding between Oracle Text v/s PL/SQL
In the Oracle Text technical document it is mentioned that the Standard ( CONTEXT ) and Catalog ( CTXCAT ) types of index are used to build index for larger co-herent documents and performing mixed querires respectively.
As I read furthur, I understand that if the requirement is not heavily document centric, then may be Oracle Text is not an ideal candidate to use. If most of the data is going to reside primarily in tables, then standard PL/ SQL queries and joins is the way to go. But on the other hand using standard SQL for names matches using LIKE operator, for eg, may not guarantee to work or may be complex to implement when trying wildcard or theme matches.
So the question is do we use Oracle text irrespective of the type of content being indexed i.e table data v/s documents ? How do we make that judgement?
What type of data do you have and what types of searches do you want to be able to do? If you need features that are only available in Text, then you need Text. For example, if you will be searching documents that are stored in operatinig system files or in blob columns and you want to do stem searches or fuzzy searches or use a thesaurus, then you will need Oracle Text. If, on the other hand, the data that you have and the searches that you want can be done with or without Text, then you have a choice to make, with the major issue being which is more efficient. When in doubt, a little testing can help you decide. Set up a realistic test environment, test some queries both ways, and see which is fastest. If you are just doing standard searches on varchar2 columns, you may get better performance without Text.

Differences between oracle text in enterprise and express editions
are there any differences between oracle text features found in express edition and ent. edition. if so what are they?
There is a list of features available in the online documentation. The only thing that it mentions as being missing from Oracle Text are the english and french knowledge bases. There isn't any Intermedia or Ultra Search or Data Mining. Here is a link to the 10g Express Edition features guide:
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/license.102/b25456/toc.htm#BABDDIAE
There is a separate discussion group for 10g Express Edition, that requires a separate free registration:
Oracle Database Express Edition (XE)
There is a thread on this subject in the 10g Express discussion group:
Oracle Text
The above thread includes the following quick comparison:
If it's not in Standard Edition One, it is not in Express Edition. (Therefore everything that is in Enterprise but not in Standard Edition, is also not in Express Edition. That includes all EE-only options.)
If it requires Java in the database, it is not in Express Edition.
Other than that, it's mainly the size limits: 1 CPU (no parallel processing), 1 GB RAM, and 4 GB user-related tablespaces. -

Difference between Oracle Text and XML DB?
We are currently storing XML's in Oracle text. I understand that XML DB is faster to retrieve XML's based on conditional search within XML.
Is there a place I could find the difference between these two?Text offer xpath like searching, assuming that you don't need to worry about little things like namespaces :). Oracle XML DB offers native XML storage, indexing and searching fully compliant with rellevant XML standards.

Error when attempting to add Oracle Text using DBCA
Hi all -
I'm trying to add Oracle Text to my 10gR1 database using DBCA. The Oracle Text option is available, but when I attempt to add it I get the error message: "A tablespace for the database option Oracle Text is not found. Cannot install this option in the database." I have a SYSAUX tablespace, which I believe is the default tablespace for Text, so I'm not sure what the problem could be. I also tried manually adding Oracle Text by running catctx.sql but received the error message:
ERROR at line1:
ORA-39705: component 'CONTEXT' not found in registry
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_SYS_ERROR", line 86
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_REGISTRY", line 757
ORA-06512: at line 2
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Hi,
this looks like a half way install, I think you should try to deinstall Oracle Text and then reinstall, have a look at note 280713.1 on Oracle Support

Product Search Using Oracle Text or By Any Other Methods using PL/SQL
Hi All,
I have requirement for product search using the product table which has around 5 million products. I Need to show top 100 disitnct products searched in the following order
1. = ProductDescription
2. ProductDescription_%
3. %_ProductDescription_%
4. %_ProductDescription
5. ProductDescription%
6. %ProductDescription
Where '_' is space. If first two/three/or any criteria itslef gives me 100 records then i need not search for another patterns
Table Structure Is as follows
Create Table Tbl_Product_Lookup
Barcode_number Varchar2(9),
Product_Description Varchar2(200),
Product_Start_Date Date,
Product_End_Date Date,
Product_Price Number(12,4)
Could you please help me implementing this one ? SLA for the search result is 2 seconds
Thanks,
VarunYou could use an Oracle Text context index with a wordlist to speed up substring searches and return all rows that match any of your criteria, combined with a case statement to provide a ranking that can be ordered by within an inner query, then use rownum to limit the rows in an outer query. You could also use the first_rows(n) hint to speed up the return of limited rows. Please see the demonstration below. If you decide to use Oracle Text, you may want to ask further questions in the Oracle Text sub-forum on this forum or space or whatever they call it now.

How does oracle text differentiate between various document formats?
how does oracle text differentiate between text documents of various formats. does it read binary headers or a file extension is necessary?
please comment..Oracle uses the inso_filter for document filtering as desribed in the documentation:
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/text.920/a96518/afilsupt.htm#625110
I did a little test (included below) where I copied a .pdf file to a file with a .test extension and it was still able to index it and search it, so apparently it does not need the file extensions and must read the header.

Replication between Oracle Server and MS SQL Server
Hello,
Does anybody know of a well known or reliable software that can do data replication between Oracle Server and Microsoft SQL server.
I suppose I can write my own version using Heterogenous Services in Oracle but I would like to know if such an automated replication between Oracle and SQL is available commercially.
Thank you.Viacheslav Ostapenko wrote:
Sorry, Aman,

It could be very interesting.Sorry Viacheslav, even I couldn't find anything for the same. I am not sure that it can be done or not, I haven't heard anyone in my contact doing so. The only place where I have seen Streams being used around me is within Oracle db only. May be someone else can help if he/she has done it.

SQL Injection with Oracle Text
I did a search here for any posts about SQL Injection on Oracle Text indexes, but returned no hits.
Can anyone give their opinion about whether SQL Injection is a concern when using Oracle Text or what steps can be taken ahead of time to prevent (or at least reduce the attack surface) on Oracle Text queries.
We're running a web app. that will use Oracle Text and our users can enter any search string as well as select pre-defined items from a drop down box.
Thanks in advance for any opinions

How to create ODBC connection between Oracle 10g and MS SQL Server
Hi,
Can someone help us with the steps to create an ODBC connection between Oracle APPS using Oracle 10g database and MS SQL Server.
Requirement is to extract the transactional data from MS SQL Server on a daily basis and dump it into Oracle tables for an interface to be run. Currently it is being done through Dataloader tool which we feel is causing the data issue with Arabic characters. We want to create the ODBC directly between Oracle and MS SQL Server and check if the data is being pulled correctly.
The data is in sql server 2000 which has data in Arabic_CI_AS character set which is moved to Oracle 10.2.0.3 database with characterset AL32UTF8. The table data is moved to oracle using the dataloader 3.6 standard edition licensed version. We cannot change the character set of Sql Server 2000.
Please help
Thanks
ShanilHi,
If you're trying to PULL data from SQLServer into an Oracle database, you wouldnt use Oracle ODBC driver for that, so you may want to post in the Heterogeneous Services forum instead:
Heterogeneous Connectivity
If you're trying to PUSH data from SQLServer into an Oracle database, you could use ODBC but most folks use OLEDB for that, and the following note on MOS should help:
How to Create a Sql Server Linked Server With The Oracle Provider for OLE DB (Doc ID 191368.1)
As with any NLS related issue, the first thing to do is dump the codepoints of the data in the Oracle database to see if it is stored validly, rather than relying on what the data "looks like" from some tool or other. It's best to check a single row, with only a few characters in it if you can, and you can do that via
SELECT DUMP(<columname>,1016) FROM <tablename> WHERE ...
Hope it helps,

Question about transfer between oracle and sql server
Could i program to transfer lots of data between Oracle and SQL Server quickly?
I have tried make two connection between two databases, but it took me lots of time to transfer data.
How could I do it?
ThanksHi,
If you need to move data fast, then use the Oracle Migration Workbench to Generate SQL Server BCP data extraction scripts and Oracle SQL Loader files.
This is the fastest way to migrate the data.
In the Oracle Model UI tab of the Oracle Migration Workbench, right mouse click on the tables folder. there is a menu option to 'Generate SQL Loader ...' scripts. This will help you migrate your data efficiently.

What are the Basic Differences between Oracle and MS-SQL server Database?
Hello,
anybody pls Guide me about the Differences between Oracle and MS-SQL server Database.and also IBM Databases also
Regards,
BalaramSQL Server only works on Windows-based platforms, including Windows 9x, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows CE.
In comparison with SQL Server , OracleDatabase supports all known platforms, including Windows-based platforms, AIX-Based Systems, Compaq Tru64 UNIX, HP 9000 Series HP-UX, Linux Intel, Sun Solaris and so on.
The SQL Server advantages:
SQL Server holds the top TPC-C performance and price/performance results.
SQL Server is generally accepted as easier to install, use and manage.
The Oracle Database advantages:
Oracle Database supports all known platforms, not only the Windows-based platforms.
PL/SQL is more powerful language than T-SQL.
More fine-tuning to the configuration can be done via start-up parameters.

I'm getting the above error for DB links between Oracle 10.2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. But the same, when configured for MS SQL server 2000 works fine without any issues.
Please advise me to rectify the error. We've been working for the last couple of weeks.
Regards,
SunilSunil,
You don't need an Oracle ODBC driver.
The way it works is that in the gateway init<sid>.ora file, in your case initTelemetryDB1.ora, the parameter HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO points to a system DSN. This DSN should then be configured to use an ODBC driver to connect to the non-Oracle database. So, in your setup when you want to access the SQL*Server 2008 database then the DSN should use an ODBC driver that can connect to a SQL*Server 2008 database. If you still use the initTelemetryDB1.ora file for the connection then the TelemetryDB1 DSN should be configured to access the SQL*Server 2008 database.
However, there are a couple of problems with your actual setup -
- the configuration you have - 10.2 RDBMS on a Sun machine and HSODBC on Windows - is not supported. HSODBC should only be used from a RDBMS that is in the same ORACLE_HOME as HSODBC.
- 10.2 HSODBC is now desupported and has been replaced by the 11g Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) and the configuration you want is supported. That is because unlike HSODBC the DG4ODBC gateway can be installed standalone with a RDBMS being installed.
I recommend that you download and install 11.20.2 DG4ODBC on your Windows machine in a new Oracle_home and access that from the 10.2 RDBMS on Sun - which is a supported configuration. But to do this, you will need to apply either the 10.2.0.4 or 10.2.0.5 patchset to your RDBMS.
There is more information in the following note available on My Oracle Support (MOS) -
Note.1083703.1 Master Note for Oracle Gateway Products
The 11.2.0.2 DG4ODBC can be downloaded from MOS as patch and for the gateways on Windows 32-bit you just need to download -
p10098816_112020_platform_4of6.zip
However, to check the HSODBC ou need to confirm that the DSN used by HSODBC points to a System DSN configured to access SQL*Server 2008.
Have a look at -
Note 109730.1 How to setup generic connectivity (HSODBC) for Windows NT
But remember this is not a supported version or configuration and you should be using Dg4ODBC.

Mike
