Default filename for print to file in Linux

Hi,
I'm using print to file in Linux, and I'd like the default filename to be the page title. I couldn't find a config option for this. It retains the last file name I used, which is very problematic for me, as I can easily overwrite my last printed file by accident.
I'd also like the printer to default to print to file. Is that possible? Not a big deal, but it would save me a click. :-)
BTW, I've found that the print to file for PDFs is excellent. It often produces PDFs that half the size of other options I've tried. Thank you!
Ari

This is not solved as I do not know where to change the default directory.

  • Need to specify default filename for SaveAs

    I am using the command app.execMenuItem("SaveAs"); in the click event of a button. Is there anyway that I can specify a default filename for the user? I do want the user to get the Save As window and the ability to change the name if possible.
    The form is generated by the RenderForm Java script, and the name being generated as a default for the SaveAs window is RenderForm.pdf
    Thanks,
    Velvet

    Chris, I think you missed this one.
    I think you want to change the name when calling app.SaveAs via javascript from the client not on the server. Since app.executeMenuItem("saveAs") will not take any parameters to suggest a file name. I think you will have to use doc.saveAs which will allow the name to be specified. This would require a trustedFunction which may or will not work unless you have known users. You will also need to prompt for the file name before making the call.
    Here is some untested code to get you started...
    You will need to create a trustedFunction (see AcroJS.pdf for details) ..
    saveFunc = app.trustedFunction(function (filename) {
    app.beginPriv();
    try {
    event.target.saveAs({cPath: filename});
    } catch (err) {
    app.alert("Error: " + err);
    app.endPriv();
    Code for your event...
    var suggestedName = "MyPDFName.pdf";
    // Note This will only work if you know where they will be saving it
    var cPathToSaveTo = "/c/temp/";
    var cResponse = app.response({
    cQuestion: "What name would you like to use for this PDF?",
    cTitle: "File Name",
    cDefault: suggestedName,
    cLabel: "File Name:" })
    if(cResponse != null)
    saveFunc(cPathToSaveTo + cResponse );
    Hope this helps.

  • SetFileName for print to file doesn't work

    I have a questions about print to file with java.awt:
    With Java 1.4, when I use setFileName in the JobAttributes class, as soon as the user clicks on Print to File, this file name shows.
    However, with Java 1.5, this file name does not show, a different file name shows. The reason why I want my file name to show is that I need a specific extension.
    I do need to use java.awt, I cannot use javax.swing, because for printing to the printer, I need to call my own paint.
    Please help.
    Thanks a lot!

    Well, I am saying:
    JobAttributes jobAttributes = new JobAttributes();
    jobAttributes.setFileName("out.ps");
    But even though this filename worked in Java 1.4 for printing to file, in Java 1.5 and Java 1.6, it doesn't recognize this filename, it always makes it "out.prn".
    Please help!
    Here is my total printing code:
    class PrintableComponent implements Printable
    public PrintableComponent()
    public void print()
    PrintJob printJob;
    PrinterJob printerJob;
    String string = new String();
    JobAttributes jobAttributes = new JobAttributes();
    PageAttributes pageAttributes = new PageAttributes();
    PageFormat pageFormat = new PageFormat();
    jobAttributes.setDialog(JobAttributes.DialogType.NATIVE);
    jobAttributes.setFileName("out.ps");
    pageAttributes.setOrigin(PageAttributes.OriginType.PRINTABLE);
    pageAttributes.setPrintQuality(PageAttributes.PrintQualityType.HIGH);
    printerJob = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob();
    printJob = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getPrintJob(Basics.ananyaCurves, null, jobAttributes, pageAttributes);
    if (jobAttributes.getDestination() == JobAttributes.DestinationType.PRINTER)
    if (pageAttributes.getOrientationRequested() == PageAttributes.OrientationRequestedType.PORTRAIT)
    pageFormat.setOrientation(1);
    else if (pageAttributes.getOrientationRequested() == PageAttributes.OrientationRequestedType.LANDSCAPE)
    pageFormat.setOrientation(0);
    printerJob.setPrintable(this, pageFormat);
    printerJob.setCopies(jobAttributes.getCopies());
    printJob.end();
    try

    System.out.println(printerException);
    printJob.finalize();
    else if (jobAttributes.getDestination() == JobAttributes.DestinationType.FILE)
    string = jobAttributes.getFileName();
    printJob.end();

  • Choosing Default Program for Opening .doc files

  • How do I change the default app for opening a file;

    If I right click on a file in finder, it tells me what the default app for opening the file is.  it also gives me a short list of other apps.
    I would like to change the defaults for several file types, and also delete one app from the short list and add a different one.
    How do I do this?
    thanks

    You could try this:
    - right-click (tap with 2 fingers on the apple trackpad) on a file you want to open in openoffice
    - move the cursor over "open with". You should see the default app, then some suggestions, then app store, then at the end, "other...".  Select "other..."
    - find openoffice in your applications folder and select it  (if it is dimmed, change "enable: " from "recommended applications" to "all applications", then you can select "openoffice")
    - check "always open with"
    - then, click "open".  The file will open in openoffice and from now on, openoffice will be the default application to open the type of file you just opened.  You should also see the icon of all files of the same type change to the openoffice file icon.
    This is supposed to work, but that's not always the case, especially when the default app happens to be an Apple app.  If you don't want to use that Apple app, delete it (or move it elsewhere if you want a backup). That can help.
    Good luck!

    Hi all,
    We can set the default value for print options, just like Logical destination、numbers of messages、print immediately and so on, so where we should to maintain these default?

    Hi Sandy,
    This can be done by an abaper by making changes in the driver program. The Driver program feeds all the data which u have mentioned for printing.
    if the driver program is standard. copy to an z type and make modification on printer settings on the driver program code.
    this will surely solve the issue.

  • Set default filename for file save dialog on Save button click

    Hi,
    I am using AxAcroPDF (version 9.0) control to view pdf files in windows forms (C#). The pdf loads into the viewer in the form. Now, when I click on the Save button in the viewer, a Save dialog pops up with a default filename having complete path info.
    If I have loaded the pdf file into AxAcroPDF viewer with filename:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\KB_Kravi\My Documents\CustomerList.pdf"
    then in the save dialog, the default filename will be:
    "C_Documents_and_Settings_KB_Kravi_My Documents_CustomerList.pdf"
    Is there any option to set the default filename in the save dialog to some short name, instead of this lengthy name?
    Thanks,

  • How do I change or remove default apps for a given file extension (in Terminal?) without munging date modified on all my old files?

    When a program is installed, it seems to be able to do it (sometimes inappropriately if it hijacks file associations without asking) so why can't I?  This is for 10.4.
    Specifically:
    1. Since installing an HP wireless printer, HP not only tries to install a bunch of sales-ware on your machine that you have to carefully opt out of (annoying, but not a problem if forewarned), it changes the default file association for a number of basic file types, listing all sort of existing files as HP printer files. Using Get Info to change the default file type association globally causes it to mark ALL the files of that type as newly updated, munging the file metdata (which HP did NOT do). Most of the stuff on our computer is sorted by last modified, so if there is a way to fix this in Terminal (to simply fix or remove the HP default tag) without changing the date the file was modified, it would help. Note that uninstalling the program that created the default would do this, but I obviously can't do that (and reinstalling HP would have the same effect). So there has to be another way, right?
    2. Since updating iTunes to v.9 a while back, every mp3 is marked as an iTunes file even though iTunes has NO multiple library capability without a wonky reboot using the option key, meaning that if I click on an mp3 downloaded since last update of iTunes, it opens automatically in iTunes and gets added to the SOLE itunes library without asking. (There is no way to toggle between multiple libraries or archive media in separate folders; iPhoto has a similar problem. (Has this been fixed in the latest version of iTunes?) In comparison, Quicktime starts up immediately and does not attempt to create a playlist just because you opened a file and listened to it.
    (The iTunes playlists are simply subfolders of the single main library -- and you can't create a new library without doing a wonky procedure by clicking option during startup and telling iTunes to forget where its library is located (includin everything in it) and look up an entirely separate one by hand. So any mp3 file downloaded recently is uploaded to iTunes if you click on it. This wouldn't be problem if it didn't automatically add it to the sole iTunes library just because you clicked on it.)
    Besides, all my old mp3s are Quicktime files and they are all archived by date modified. To its credit, ITunes, unlike HP, does NOT hijack older files already on disk and remark them as iTunes files. It only marks newly downloaded files as such.  But if I try and change file association for FUTURE mp3 files using Get Info > "use this program for all files of this type", it munges the file metadata (date modified) for all existing files!
    Note that in HP case, it apparently does it at the file exchange preference level (or whatever it's called) since the OS then recognizes every file of those types as an HP file. In the iTunes case, it only does it if you download a new media file or open an existing file in iTunes, but again without changing the date it was last edited.
    Since these programs are able to change the default file association without changing the date the file was last edited, it should be reversible in Terminal, correct?  Why does it change "date modified" when you try and correct metadata using Get Info (or sometimes just by clicking an enclosing folder?) Date modified should be a record of when a file itself was edited, not when it was renamed, or other metadata. Otherwise stuff can't be sorted correctly.

    The unix commands you need are:
    GetFileInfo
    SetFileInfo
    and maybe find
    for cryptic details use the man command
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    man SetFileInfo
    You may use the SetFileInfo command to set the file type & the program which will open the file.

  • Setting default filename for servlet-based download

    I'm new to servlet programming and am attempting to download a file from the server to the client. When I am prompted to open the file from it's current location or save it to disk, the correct filename appears. However, when I click ok and the Save dialog appears, the default filename isn't the actual name of the file but instead contains the name of the package the servlet is located in. Can anyone tell me how I can change my code to have the default filename appear instead of the package name. Thanks.
    Here is the code to call the servlet located in the package named 'frosttwo':
    WebgapBeanFactory wgbf = WebgapBeanFactory.getWebgapBeanFactory();
    String path = wgbf.getTransferFileDirectory();
    String filename = path + request.getParameter("file");
    System.out.println(filename);
    response.sendRedirect("/servlet/frosttwo.Servlet1?file=" + filename);
    Here is the code contained in the servlet:
    public class Servlet1 extends HttpServlet {
    private static final String CONTENT_TYPE = "text/html";
    /**Initialize global variables*/
    public void init(ServletConfig config) throws ServletException {
    super.init(config);
    /**Process the HTTP Get request*/
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException {
    String file = null;
    try
    file = URLDecoder.decode(request.getParameter("file"));
    String filename = file.substring((file.lastIndexOf(File.separatorChar) + 1), file.length());
    response.setContentType("application/octet-stream");
    response.setHeader("Content-disposition", "attachment;filename=" + filename);
    File f = new File(file);
    FileInputStream is = new FileInputStream(f);
    ServletOutputStream s = response.getOutputStream();
    byte[] buffer=new byte[8192];
    int length=buffer.length;
    while((length=is.read(buffer))!=-1)
    s.write(buffer,0,length);
    s.flush();
    catch (IOException ex)
    System.err.println("There was an error sending file " + file);
    ex.printStackTrace();
    catch (Exception ex)
    System.err.println("There was an error sending file " + file);
    ex.printStackTrace();
    public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException {
    doGet(request, response);
    /**Clean up resources*/
    public void destroy() {
    Thanks again.

    I use something like this for res.setHeader and it works fine for me. In the save dialog box it puts this filename there. But if its not able to find the filename then sometime it used to put servletname instead of filename:
    res.setHeader("Content-Disposition","multi-part attachment;filename=\""+
    fname+"\";");
    hope it helps

  • Default settings for opening EPS files

    When opening an Illustrator-made EPS in Photoshop, there is a "Rasterize EPS" dialog box, which you can specify the width, height, and resolution.  What are the default values for those fields based on?  Is there a way to change the default so that it is always set to open at 300dpi, for example?
    Thanks!

    A big thanks to Mr J Maloney, this is an excellent work around, however... (there's always a however), for some unknown reason, somewhere in the batch/droplet process, unlike CS3, CS4 automatically changes the colour mode to RGB, even although I set the action up to open the EPS as CMYK.
    I know that I could put an additional step in the action to convert to CMYK, which works, however for my specific requirements this doesn't work for me because all the black text in the EPS file which I specifically set in a previous app to be non-rich black (100K) changes to rich black if this additional step is put in, despite the image now being CMYK.
    The problem is that my work requires me to batch process hundreds of; CMYK, 300ppi EPS files and convert these into; CMYK, 300ppi JPG's for print (our printers only accept hi-res JPG's*). The problem is that our printers do not accept any text in rich black, so we have to convert the all black text to 100K. As there are also sometimes photo images along side the text, this makes it impossible to select just the text in a batch process situation, where all teh images are different.
    It seems to me that unlike CS3, CS4 almost seems to dictate that all EPS to JPG batch conversion's are for the Web hence it's RGB 72ppi defaults. However there are some people such as myself who need to retain control over the ppi and colour modes for the purposes of print and not web, so my long winded question is.......
    .....Does anyone know how to stop this RGB conversion in CS4?
    (Sorry about the length of this post, *and no, sadly I cannot change my printers)
