Default Tablespace in Oracle

When creating a new user, If no default tablespace is specified for that user, SYSTEM tablespace is designated as the default tablespace for that user. How do Oracle makes SYSTEM TABLESPACE as the dafault one. When a new tablespace is created, Is there any way to mark a that tablespace as the DEFAULT one for the Database?
Thanks

What prevents you from doing this yourself and seeing for yourself what the behavior is?   (How do you think the 'gurus' got to be 'gurus'?)
If, after conducting your own test, you see behavior you don't understand, I'm sure someone here will help explain the behavior you observe vs the behavior you expected.

  • Can we create new tablespace in Oracle Database 10g Express Edition?

    Hi,
    Can we create new tablespace in Oracle Database 10g Express Edition instead of using the default "users" tablespace provided?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

    Correct. The sum of all user tablespaces is not allowed to exceed 4 GIG.
    You could try shrinking your tablespaces. Theres a script called maxshrink on http://asktom.oracle.com which is useful for this.
    You could compress your tables.
    If you are storing lobs, you could consider storing them as bfiles.
    Or upgrade to Oracle Standard Edition 1. Its not that expensive.

  • Move tables (some with LONG datatypes) across tablespaces in Oracle 9i

    I have a 14GB tablespace which about 3,000 tables (and only tables) in. Only 2.6GB is used so I would like to resize the tablespace to about 3GB initially.
    I moved the tables with "alter table <owner>.<tablename> move tablespace <tablespace>" and this worked for most of the tables but failed on some with this kind of error:
    alter table IFSAPP.COMMAND_SYS_BUFFER_TAB move tablespace IFSAPP_DATA_TEMP
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00997: illegal use of LONG datatypeI then moved the other tables back to the original a little frustrated.
    Further reading suggested exporting and importing the tables is the way to go.
    I prefer the alter table because Oracle manages the lock whilst it moves. If I export and import, the table could change in between, potentially ending with me importing an old copy, couldn't it? [It seems neigh on impossible to guarantee an available window to do much!]
    So I though I could you the alter table move for ALL tables and those that are left, use export/import, to minimise the risk.
    How should I proceed?
    1) Create TEMP_TABLESPACE as 3GB
    2) "alter table ... move tablespace ..." for all tables in ORIGINAL_TABLESPACE to TEMP_TABLESPACE
    3) For the remaining tables, individually:
    a) lock table (not sure how)
    b) export table: exp user/pass tables=tablename file=exp.dmp rows=yes
    c) drop table
    d) create table in TEMP_TABLESPACE*
    e) import table: imp user/pass tables=tablename
    * this means I need to know how to re-create the table. It also means views and indexes and packages are going to become invalid.
    4) drop tablespace ORIGINAL_TABLESPACE
    5) Create ORIGINAL_TABLESPACE as 3GB
    6) "alter table ... move tablespace ..." for all tables in TEMP_TABLESPACE to ORIGINAL_TABLESPACE
    7) For the remaining tables, individually:
    a) lock table (not sure how)
    b) export table: exp user/pass tables=tablename file=exp.dmp rows=yes
    c) drop table
    d) create table in ORIGINAL_TABLESPACE
    e) import table: imp user/pass tables=tablename
    This seems high risk and messy.
    Has anyone advice or tips to make it simpler?
    As it stands I am considering leaving alone, the risks worry me!
    Thanks

    Interesting idea.. so this would create a temporary table in the temporary tablespace.
    Rather than set the default tablespace, can I merely add the tablespace clause?
    COPY FROM user/password@database CREATE TmpTblName TABLESPACE TmpTablespace USING SELECT
    * FROM Table_name;
    Either way - can you confirm for each table, I would need to:
    COPY FROM user/password@database CREATE TmpTblName TABLESPACE temp_tablespace USING SELECT * FROM Table_name;
    At this point all indexes for these will be invalid.
    Drop tablespace ORIGINAL_TABLESPACE
    Create ORIGINAL_TABLESPACE as 3GB
    COPY FROM user/password@database CREATE TblName TABLESPACE original_tablespace USING SELECT * FROM TmpTable_name;
    rebuild any indexes which are unusable.
    recompile any invalid objects

  • Use of DEFAULT tablespace while re-enabling constraint

    Using 8.1.7.2.
    While trying to re-enable a constraint on a table, we hit a ORA-01630. According to the error message, Oracle was trying to use the DEFAULT tablespace (USERS) instead of the TEMPORARY tablespace (TEMP) to do the work.
    Why would Oracle use a tablespace other than TEMP to do work that needed temporary space?
    [email protected]

    What is the 'temporary_tablespace' value when you query user_users as this user?
    Oracle will use the tablespace that is specified as the users TEMPORARY_TABLESPACE for all sorts. If that tablespace does not exists, it uses SYSTEM.

    You can not set the temporary tablespace at the database level as default temporary tablespace in Oracle 8i. From Oracle 9i onwards, you can create and assign the temporary tablespace at the database level.
    Only possible way in Oracle 8i is at the user level.
    i.e.
    SQL> alter user scott default tablespace TEMP;

  • Tablespace in oracle 8.1.6

    we had an oracle server running in linux machine.im maintaining 4 databases on it. we dont create tablespaces for each of them. so the default tablespace of all my schema is using the tablespace 'system'. i reconfigure by creating users for default tablespace and temp for temporary. when i create a new user
    i follow this syntax
    create username identified by password
    default tablespace users
    temporary tablespace temp;
    grant connect,resource to username;
    why is it when i open my oem. my table for that user still uses the system tablespace not the user tablespace which i define.
    regards
    jerome

    jerome,
    I assume from what you said about "reconfiguring", the problem could be because you changed the default tablespace after you created those tables.
    drop and recreate those tables after setting the default tablespace. or else
    use this syntax to move tables to new tablespaces.
    alter table table1 move tablespace users;
    make sure you have given quota to create objects in users tablespace to the new user.
    alter user user1 default tablespace users;
    alter user user1 quota 10m on tablespace users;
    after you set the default tablespace any new created will go to that tablespace.
    this should work.

  • What is the use of SYSAUX Tablespace in Oracle 10G

    Dear Experts,
    Please Tell me What is the use of SYSAUX Tablespace in Oracle 10G Because
    during Web Load Testing It is going to increase countinuosly.Although i am not using this with any tables.
    How Can I find out the what is gong on in this.
    Can I Remove this tablesspace and other non using Schemas like FLOWS_020100,MDSYS,OUTLN,DIP and TSMSYS etc.

    What is SYSAUX?
    The SYSAUX tablespace provides storage of non-sys-related tables and indexes that traditionally were placed in the SYSTEM tablespace. For example, the tables and indexes that were previously owned by the system user can now be specified for a SYSAUX tablespace. Unfortunately, Oracle still places the SCOTT schema and the other demonstration schemas in the SYSTEM tablespace. Go figure.
    The SYSAUX tablespace is specified with the CREATE DATABASE command. This is demonstrated in the example database creation script in Figure 1.1.
    CREATE DATABASE test
    MAXINSTANCES 1
    MAXLOGHISTORY 1
    MAXLOGFILES 5
    MAXLOGMEMBERS 3
    MAXDATAFILES 100
    DATAFILE '/usr/oracle/OraHome1/oradata/aultdb1/test/system01.dbf' SIZE 300M REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 10240K MAXSIZE UNLIMITED
    EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL
    SYSAUX DATAFILE '/usr/oracle/OraHome1/oradata/aultdb1/test/sysaux01.dbf' SIZE 120M REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 10240K MAXSIZE UNLIMITED
    DEFAULT TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP TEMPFILE '/usr/oracle/OraHome1/oradata/aultdb1/test/temp01.dbf' SIZE 20M REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 640K MAXSIZE UNLIMITED EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL
    UNDO TABLESPACE "UNDOTBS1" DATAFILE '/usr/oracle/OraHome1/oradata/aultdb1/test/undotbs01.dbf' SIZE 200M REUSE AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 5120K MAXSIZE UNLIMITED
    CHARACTER SET WE8ISO8859P1
    NATIONAL CHARACTER SET AL16UTF16
    LOGFILE GROUP 1 ('/usr/oracle/OraHome1/oradata/aultdb1/test/redo01.log') SIZE 10240K,
    GROUP 2 ('/usr/oracle/OraHome1/oradata/aultdb1/test/redo02.log') SIZE 10240K,
    GROUP 3 ('/usr/oracle/OraHome1/oradata/aultdb1/test/redo03.log') SIZE 10240K
    USER SYS IDENTIFIED BY "password" USER SYSTEM IDENTIFIED BY "password";
    Oracle10g sysaux
    With the new SYSAUX tablespace, Oracle comes closer to providing all the needed tablespaces for a truly OFA-compliant database right out of the box. With just one CREATE DATABASE command we can specify the SYSTEM tablespace, the TEMPORARY tablespace, the AUXSYS tablespace, the default UNDO tablespace, and the redo logs.
    Of course, with the Oracle Managed Files option you can create an entire database with a single command, but the database created is not suitable for production use and is not OFA-compliant.
    The SYSAUX tablespace is required in all new 10g databases. Only the SYSAUX tablespace datafile location is specified. Oracle specifies the remainder of the tablespace properties including:
    online
    permanent
    read write
    extent managment local
    segment space management auto
    If a datafile is specified for the SYSTEM tablespace, then one must be specified for the SYSAUX tablespace as well. If one is not specified, then the CREATE DATABASE command will fail. The only exception is for an Oracle Managed File system.
    During any update of a database to Oracle Database 10g, a SYSAUX tablespace must be created or the upgrade will fail. The SYSAUX tablespace has the same security profile as the SYSTEM tablespace. However, loss of the SYSAUX tablespace will not result in a database crash, only the functional loss of the schemas it contains.
    Can I drop SysAux?
    DROP DATAFILE

  • Create object on user's default tablespace only

    Hi all,
    Is there anyway I can limit a user to create tables NOT on system tablespace , besides alter user quota 0M on system ?
    Can I limit a user to create objects only on his own default tablespace ?
    alter user quota 0M on < all other tablespaces except user's default> ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I have really no idea why oracle is behaving like this. How can you create a table without a quota.
    1) Write here the oracle version for your database software
    2) Can you try connecting to the database with same user id but from a remote client using TNS method instead of logging in locally, and they try creating the table.
    3) Can you give only CREATE SESSION privilege (not create table) and then perform the same task again.
    PS: Please paster your code/output enclosed withing code tag. Write **, then your code/output and then again *{code*

    That's right. Additionally, you can use assistant to perform this task. In the near future you may want to have the SQL Reference handy: http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/toc.htm

  • Export from 8i to 11g does not create object in default tablespace

    Hello
    I have exported and schema from oracle 8i and i try to import it in oracle 11g in a different architecture (8i is sparc. 11g is x86)
    i have created an user with default tablespace and the original tablespace does not exist in this database, but I am getting the error;
    IMP-00003: ORACLE error 959 encountered
    ORA-00959: tablespace 'TS_ARCCLAIMS_DAT' does not exist
    if i create an indexfile and create all the objects by removing the REM from the indexfile i have countless contrains errors so i bet this is not an option.
    this is how the user is created in 11g:
    CREATE USER ARCCLAIMS
      IDENTIFIED BY <password>
      DEFAULT TABLESPACE ARCCLAIMS_DAT
      TEMPORARY TABLESPACE GN_TMP
      PROFILE DEFAULT
      ACCOUNT UNLOCK;

      GRANT UNLIMITED TABLESPACE TO ARCCLAIMS;
      -- 1 Tablespace Quota for ARCCLAIMS
      ALTER USER ARCCLAIMS QUOTA UNLIMITED ON ARCCLAIMS_DAT;
    what do i have to do in order to have the objects go to the default tablespace of the user?

  • BC4J temporary tables - default tablespace

    I have database Oracle database 9i. I have created database user by CREATE USER "DBUSER" PROFILE "DEFAULT" IDENTIFIED BY "dbuser" DEFAULT TABLESPACE "MYTABLESPACE" TEMPORARY TABLESPACE "TEMP" ACCOUNT UNLOCK;
    So I expect all tables are created inside ORDBS tablespace. They do - but only my application tables. BC4J temporary tables (PCOLL_CONTROL, ...) are created inside "USERS" tablespace, not MYTABLESPACE nor TEMP.
    Why? I don't want they are created inside users but don't know how to change it...
    Any idea?

    PS. I use JDeveloper 9.0.3.4

    Hi Steve/Nick,
    I am facing a similar kind of problem in oracle 9iAS(90220). A few days back there was a lot of user activity in one of the application modules and 7 PS_<app.module.name(s)> tables were created with around 7GB of size which eventually filled up the entire tablespace(100%). I spoke to the developers about the attributes that need to be set for Row spill over feature discussed in this forum but they said after lots of testing they have set those values and cannot be changed.
    Could you please suggest me how can I ensure that, next time any application module specific PS_ tables will get created I can route them to different tablespace based on the module name. (I donot want to move them after they are created, to a different tablespace) Please let me know asap so that I can implement it and avert any future problems.
    Thanks & regards,

  • Modifying default tablespace + implications

    Suppose an Oracle user has his default tablespace set to Tablespace_Old and there are already objects stored there.
    Now suppose we want to alter the user such that this default tablespace is set to Tablespace_New. What happens to the objects which were stored in Tablespace_Old? Will they still be accessible from Tablespace_New or there will be the need to migrate the old data to the new tablespace?
    Moreover, in the case of a standby database scenario, will the standby database adopt such changes (i.e. will the user be assigned to tablespace Tablespace_New?)?
    thanks for your time.

    The default tablespace is only used to assign a location to build an object if a tablespace is not defined. The old objects will still be accessable. The more important thing is what quota's are assigned for the user on the tablespace. If the Quota is none, the user can't write in the tablespace. If it is unlimited, they can write anything and if the quota is 20 meg, then they can't create more then 20 meg of objects and rows.
