Delay or Disable Tool Tips?

It's a minor annoyance, these tool tips. I do most of my Finder work in List view, and when a file or folder has a really long name the Finder, trying to "help" instantly pops up a tool tip with the full name. Except I don't need/want this kind of "help". It inevitably interferes with double-clicking the folder I'm looking at (since it pops up instantly and seems somehow to be between the pointer and the folder). So how the heck can I make it wait a few seconds before "helping" me? I've searched around, but I can't see if anyone else has gotten a satisfactory answer to this question.

I give up. Apple has apparently made it impossible to disable tooltips. I hope they change their minds about this in the future and choose to give their users the ability to disable tooltips.

  • Disabling tool tips...please

    Does anyone know how to disable tool tips in IE 8 or IE 7.
    Tool tips get in the way of recording and make for unsightly screen captures.
    I know there is a way to do it in Firefox, but so far I cant find anyway for IE 8 or IE 7.
    I am suprised the Adobe people do not have any published solution for this problem.
    Masking over pesky tooltips can waste many hours in development time.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Ryan,
    I just wanted to find out if you ever found the answer to your question as I have the same problem as you do!!! If not, would anyone be able to help us out?
    Thanks so much!

  • Disabling tool tips?

    Whenever I open a large number of tabs in Safari, the tool tips will randomly stop working on each tab, and then I will suddenly get tool tips blinking rapidly near the cursor, which has the effect of locking up Safari for a period that is equal to the amount of tool tips that were not initially displayed.
    I don't need the tool tips to begin with, is there some way to turn them off entirely?

    Harm
    Thanks for the suggestion but I actually already have Windows Tips disabled (through the Windows Explorer menu).  But they're still showing up in Premiere.  I tell you - it's 2011 but we still can't get consitency between Adobe apps.  Photoshop?  Turn Off Tool Tips.  After Effects?  Turn Off Tool Tips.  Premiere?  You're stuck with 'em.
    Thanks,

  • How to disable tool tips in JRC

    Please let me know how to disable tooltip in browser for JRC

    I do not think it is possible to disable tooltips with JRC.
    But in RDC you can try to turn off all the tooltips for the reportobjects, including objects within the subreport with the snippet code below:
    Dim i As Integer
    Dim ii As Integer
    Dim iii As Integer
    Dim iiii As Integer
    For i = 1 To Report.Sections.Count
        For ii = 1 To Report.Sections(i).ReportObjects.Count
            Report.Sections(i).ReportObjects(ii).ConditionFormula(crToolTipTextConditionFormulaType) = "chr(9)"
            If Report.Sections(i).ReportObjects(ii).Kind = crSubreportObject Then
                    Set subreport = Report.OpenSubreport(Report.Sections(i).ReportObjects(ii).SubreportName)

  • Disable balloon tips?

    Hi-I'm trying to disable balloon tips in my applications like Photoshop, Quark etc. I found on:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/55202/2007/02/termtooltips.html
    that you have to go in "Terminal" and paste a script:
    defaults write -g NSInitialToolTipDelay -int 10000
    It says it stalls tool tips for 10 seconds. I'm not sure if that will work in OS 10.6
    And I'm not that savy with scripts  to restore default settings and besides I found it effects Spotlight.
    Isn't there an easier way to disable tool tips?
    Thank you-j

    No.

  • Tool Tip / GUI-script battle

    I've got a slider that invokes a handler that performs some AppleScript GUI scripting ( ... unfortunate, yes, but there's no other way.)
    The slider has a Tool Tip.
    If I click and drag outside of the slider's mouseDown region, no problem. The GUI stuff works as expected.
    If I drag inside the slider's mouseDown region, the ToolTip appears at it designated time, as if I were hovering. This causes a NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError: 4 (1) error. Certainly makes sense that I'd get an error when the Tool Tip comes to the front. But I'm confused as to why it appears. None of my non-GUI related sliders have this problem.
    Suggestions?
    Here are a few other Tool Tip questions:
    1) Can I increase or decrease the display length for all tool tips?
    2) Is it possible to keep tool tips visible indefinitely while the user hovers the mouse over the object, closing on mouseLeave?
    3) Can I toggle all Tool Tips to enabled or disabled?
    Thanks, John

  • How to get rid of annoying tool tips while editing SQL files

    I'm using Visual Studio 2013 to edit an .SQL file and I have attached the editor to a local SQL Server 2008 R2 database.
    While editing the string that is passed to a sp_executesql procedure it keeps popping up a tool tip saying:
    "Parameter help is not supported for extended stored procedures"
    Generally I don't care about that and it is annoying because it keeps appearing over the top of the text I want to read. Is there any way to stop Visual Studio doing this?
    a

    Hi aptitude,
    Thank you for posting in the MSDN forum.
    >>I'm using Visual Studio 2013 to edit an .SQL file and I have attached the editor to a local SQL Server 2008 R2 database.
    Could you share us more information about this issue? You said that you edit the .sql file, which kind of app did you create which would use the .SQL file? Whether it is related to the SQL Server database project or others?
    If it is related to the SQL Server Database project, please post this issue to the SSDT forum:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/home?forum=ssdt
    >>While editing the string that is passed to a sp_executesql procedure it keeps popping up a tool tip saying:"Parameter help is not supported for extended stored procedures".

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms188001(v=sql.105).aspx
    But if it is related to the SQL Server, to really repro this issue, and make sure that whether this warning is related to the SQL scrip or others, maybe you could select a better forum here:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/home?category=sqlserver
    If I have misunderstood this issue, maybe you could share us a simple sample and the detailed steps in your new reply, so we could really repro this issue in our side.
    In addition, I did some research about the warning message:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173434.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    The IntelliSense functionality of the Database Engine Query Editor does not support all Transact-SQL syntax elements. Parameter help does not support the parameters in some objects, such as extended stored procedures. For more information, see
    Transact-SQL Syntax Supported by IntelliSense.
    In SQL Server, it seems that it is related to the IntelliSense, I'm not very sure that whether it is related to the IntelliSense of VS IDE, but generally we could enable or disable IntelliSense under TOOLS->Option->Text Editor in VS
    IDE.
    Maybe you could disable IntelliSense in VS IDE, and then check it again.
    If I misunderstood this issue, please feel free to let me know.

  • Irritating Tool Tip on image file location

    My complied web help (RoboHelp Word) shows an irritating tool
    tip on the location and file name of the images when the mouse is
    placed over the images. How do I disable this?

    Hi jothi21 and welcome to our community
    Personally, I try like heck to avoid mixing Word and
    RoboHelp, but it does appear here that you actually LIKE this
    combination.
    If this were RoboHelp HTML. I'd tell you to double-click the
    offending image and look in the
    Screen tip field. I'm hopeful here that Word might offer the
    same thing if you double click your image there. If not, try right
    clicking the image and see what options you have. The goal is to
    see if RoboHelp will offer some option to insert the same thing in
    the RoboHelp for Word version.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Remove Rectangle Tools' size tool tips from the corner

    I use the Rectanle Tool a lot and Photoshop CS6 is the first PS version i see displaying some tool tips in the corner every time i draw with it.
    Like this: http://image.bayimg.com/950a1aaf53be690dc9eadf7635aedd4aaf224e9f.jpg
    This is very annoying since it overlaps pieces of my black&white images distracting me.
    Is there any way to disable it?

    Wow. I looked at that page several times and finally i had to google the option to actually notice that drop down menu
    Thanks, conroy.

  • Bridge CS6 tool tips are blocking the buttons!

    When I try to change the layout view (grid, list, etc.) with the buttons on the bottom right, the tool tips appear and I'm not able to click through them. So, basically, when I hover over them, the tool tips are blocking me from doing it.
    I look in Prefs for a Tool Tips checkbox and it's not checked right now, but they're still appearing, and still protecting the buttons from being clicked.
    Anyone know how to turn them off?
    And I have to say this is the most ridiculous problem I ever had with a program. Kinda funny.

    I still don't think it's the right checkbox to deactivate interface tool tips as it's in the "Thumbnails" sections of prefs. (And when I switch that on I get tool tips for thumbnails, when I switch it off I do not get tool tips for thumbnails. But the interface tool tips are always consistent.)
    Well, I'm again afraid. But this time for my big mouth...
    You are very right, I did have a long delay on my machine before the tooltips showed and having the checkbox set to on it seemed directly appearing.
    As there are many inconsistencies in Bridge (in fact throughout the whole Suite) this one is very big. Don't have a good alternative short name for it but calling 'show metadata when hovering over' 'show tooltips' is really a very bad approach
    The version is CS6 and I'm on a 2009 Mac Pro using 10.6.8 if that matters any.
    Thanks, it always matters, especially since this has become a general forum with both Windows and Mac. Different OS and different versions (including detail version number) gives more insight in possible solutions or advice (update etc)
    Also, I noticed that if I make Bridge CS6 smaller than the monitor window, then the tool tips over the buttons do not appear over the buttons anymore, but under them instead. The tool tips seem to be set to appear below the mouse pointer.  When Bridge is maximized and the bottom of the Bridge window touches the bottom of the monitor there is no place else for the tool tips to go, so they get pushed up... and cover the buttons.
    I always have the Dock in sight hence pressing the green button to enlarge my Bridge window to full screen leaves a small free space and as you well discovered has not your problematic behavior with tooltips over buttons.
    I would think Bridge should be able to detect the end of the screen, obviously it does because it knows to move the tool tips up so they don't appear "off screen".
    They should use this detection to determine if the tool tips should appear above or below (or away from the screen edge) the mouse pointer.
    Agreed
    I'll stop calling it a bug and switch it to "oversight". Bottom line though is the tool tips still block the buttons and shield them from being clicked.
    Oversight is the correct word, but besides the above described improvement they really should get rid of the name tooltips in thumbnails and add an option to really hide or show all tooltips as you would expect in a proper application
    Thanks for staying tuned and clarify!
    While the Bridge team tries to read most of this forum it might be wise to make a feature request for this, are you willing to do so since this is your discovery?

  • Customise Tool Tip Message

    Hi All,
    I have a Date Component on my page and basically I am trying to Disable the Saturadays and Sundays from the Calender which I did using the disabledDaysOfWeek attribute. By doing so, I am getting a default tool tip message (in Bold) that says
    Example: 11/29/1998
    Enter a date that falls on one of the following days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
    So, I want to customize it by removing Saturday and Sunday from the above message. I tried shortDesc which did not work, instead displays the typed message (un-bolded) along with the above bold message.
    So, can I do achieve it? If not, I would like to disable this tool tip message.
    <af:inputDate value="#{bindings.SelectDate.inputValue}"
    label="Preferred Date :"
    required="true"
    shortDesc="#{bindings.SelectDate.hints.tooltip}"
    binding="#{backingBeanScope.beanName.id1}"
    id="id1"
    disabledDaysOfWeek="sat sun">
    <f:validator binding="#{bindings.SelectDate.validator}"/>
    <af:convertDateTime pattern="#{bindings.SelectDate.format}"/>
    </af:inputDate>

    Umesh,
    Thank you very much. I have just put the InputDate component onto the page and this code seems to be working in my Laptop with ver 11.1.2.1.0 and win XP. For some reason its not working in my work computer with win7 enterprise and ver 11.1.1.5.0. I will try to use the same code in work computer tomorrow and check.

  • Tool Tips - Different Styles?

    Hi,
    Had a browse through the Flex 2 docs but couldn't find
    anything around this...
    I'm able to style a tool tip through an external stylesheet
    using
    ToolTip
    // style code here
    Is it possible to define different styles for different tool
    tips? Say you have 2 text fields on a form - could you have the
    tool tip for the 1st text field say with orange text and the
    tooltip for the 2nd text field have blue text?
    Thanks in advance!

    You can always roll your own. Just use a canvas, detect the
    mouse events and use a timer if you need a delay before it shows.
    Mouse events are nice cause you can have a follow tooltip that
    moves with the mouse.

  • No mouse over tool tips in CS4?

    Hi guys,
    Having a new issue today. This has happened a couple of times in the past, but right now when I'm learning something new, I kinda need these. Whenever I mouse over anything (brushes, tools, anything!) I wait and wait, but no tool tip pops up telling me what it is. Very fustrating. I have the latest drivers for my video card and the latest patch for CS4. They were popping up just fine yesterday, but nada today. Thanks for any help.

    Hard to say. Just maybe a hickup in the system. The popping up is slightly delayed on about every system but I have never had them not pop up at all.
    Anyways, here is a link that pretty much fixes weird stuff happening in Photoshop that is called resetting the Prefs.

  • Strange "tool tip:" message when reading blogs in Safari

    Today, I was reading a blog in Safari (latest version) in SnoLo (latest version). Something caught my eye. I looked at the lower part of the screen and noticed that the idle cursor that was positioned over a word in the blog had turned into a pointer hand, but there wasn't a hyperlink in the word. I just shrugged it off until I noticed it flick again and the hand had turned into a message, like a tool tio in most applications. The tip said "Discover what top martial artists & the Army don't want you to know"! Whaaaaa?
    I scrolled down the blog and waited. After a minute or so, the pointer changed to a hand and 30+ seconds later, displayed the same message. I took a screen snap, and was able to get it before the tool tip faded.
    http://www.michaelbradydesign.com/Transfer/AppleForum/Strange_tooltip.png
    I switched to another blog and was able to replicate it. This time the message said "Sign up for the #1 voted stock newsletter for free today."
    There was no such commercial message on either blog page, nor was the window sitting on top of another window with a web page with such an advertiser.
    What in the world is going on? Has anyone seen a similar thing?
    For the record, yesterday, I updated iTunes and a Java update.
    TIA and all that.

    Hi MIchael,
    You can disable tooltips using the Terminal app /Applications/Utilities.

  • How to control tool tip popup?

    Dear all:
    How can I control tool tip popup whenever I want ? and the position?

    I've been looking at this myself recently, and have come to the conclusion that it's easier to show a JWindow with a JLabel insteadWell it depends on the actual requirement.
    To simply force a tooltip to display in its default location for the component you can use:
    Action toolTipAction = component.getActionMap().get("postTip");
    if (toolTipAction != null)
         ActionEvent postTip = new ActionEvent(component, ActionEvent.ACTION_PERFORMED, "");
         toolTipAction.actionPerformed( postTip );}
    To force a tooltip to display is a specific location you need to get a little more creative. We tried code something like:
    int delay = ToolTipManager.sharedInstance().getInitialDelay();
    ToolTipManager.sharedInstance().mouseEntered( create a mouse entered event );
    ToolTipManager.sharedInstance().mouseMoved( create a mouse moved event);
    ToolTipManager.sharedInstance().setInitialDelay(delay);The above code should dislay the tooltip, but it will be hidden based on the rules of the tooltip manager.
    If you want a more permanent tooltip that you can control when it is visible or hidden then I would use a PopupFactory. The basic code is:
    JToolTip tooltip = component.createToolTip();
    toolTip.setTipText(...);
    PopupFactory factory = PopupFactory.getSharedInstance();
    popup = factory.getPopup(component, toolTip, x, y);
    popup.show();Now you are responsile for invoking the popup.hide() method.
